Beyond Work-Family Balance, by academic researchers Rhona Rapoport, Lotte Bailyn, Joyce K. Fletcher, and Bettye H. Pruitt, grew out of a decade-long search for ways to restructure business life that would "enhance organizational effectiveness while making the workplace more equitable and improving the quality of working people's lives." While few would oppose such goals at face value, their full attainment has nonetheless remained elusive as business pressures increase and unrealistic gender assumptions--like institutional refusal to acknowledge the increasing emergence of women as primary breadwinners--remain entrenched in our corporate cultures, structures, and practices. This book advances a conceptual framework for appropriate organizational change that is tied directly to the dual agenda spelled out in the two-pronged premise of its subtitle: Advancing Gender Equity and Workplace Performance. With no one-size-fits-all solution possible for such complex issues, the authors draw on related studies in a dozen different workplace settings to instead present a starting point "so that organizations so inclined and the people in them can embark on a similar journey" of exploration and solution. The result will be of interest to anyone who agrees that such change is badly needed and long overdue. --Howard Rothman

Book Description

Everyone who struggles to meet the demands of work and personal-life responsibilities knows how tough it is to do so. This bold new book shows that it is the deeply engrained separation of work and personal life that has limited our ability to deal effectively with the conflict between them. Beyond Work-Family Balance demonstrates why the image of "balance" is outmoded and why a new approach — work-personal life integration — offers greater promise for meaningful change.

Providing many examples from action research projects in more than a dozen organizations of different kinds, the authors show how using their method of integrating rather than separating personal-life considerations from the workplace can achieve positive outcomes, not only for workers but also for the work. The method offers a way of looking deeply into the work culture to find inequitable and ineffective work practices that are so embedded and routine that no one thinks to question them — they are just the way things get done. Once identified, these work practices can be changed to achieve what the authors call a Dual Agenda: a more equitable workplace where both men and women can achieve their full potential and a more effective workplace where the needs of the work, rather than gendered and outmoded assumptions, determine what gets done and how.

5 out of 5 stars Gender equity and the bottom line.......2002-05-14

As a coach and consultant to attorneys struggling to make
the business case for effective and usable work-life practices, I found this book to be an invaluable tool and resource.
Law firms are bastions of gendered assumptions about ideal
workers. The insatiable demand for ever-increasing billable hours makes developing and maintaining a normal life outside of work an extraordinary challenge, particularly for women attorneys. "Beyond Work-Family Balance" clearly articulates the tacit gendered assumptions underlying current law firm work practices and effectively establishes the connection between gender equity and workplace performance.
I wish the managing partners of every law firm would read this.
I'll refer all of my coaching clients to it. At least it will
confirm that it's the system - not them - that has the problem.

5 out of 5 stars The business case.......2002-02-14

The long-awaited, "Beyond Work-Family Balance," is finally out! Many of us have been waiting for
the better part of a decade for a full treatment of the worklife
integration experiments at Xerox and elsewhere, and this is it! If you are
looking for a book to get you charged up about the business case for
work/life programs, go elsewhere. If you want the most honest, detailed
account of attempts to make the business case successful in practice, this
is the book for you. The basic argument starts with integration: we cannot
improve things unless and until we are willing to bring the public sphere
of employment and the private sphere of home together, a process that can
range from embarrassing to painful. The second ingredient is the dual
agenda of improving business performance and gender equity. The tightrope
involved in carrying this dual agenda into the workplace is what makes the
book interesting, powerful, and realistic. The authors argue that an
interactive research approach is required to make the dual agenda work,
with the researchers listening and learning almost as much as the
participants in the business world, a process that requires constant
feedback, reflection, and communication. Indeed, an entire chapter is
devoted to lessons for research teams wishing to pursue research while
applying a dual agenda to themselves. Sometimes the dual agenda succeeds,
and employees and managers learn how to improve the functioning of
workplaces for all participants (yes, stockholders even benefit). But the
fundamental honesty of the authors leaves us wondering: is it worth it?
Fortunately, I think the answer is yes, but the authors leave us in no
doubt as to the incredible amount of work required.
The one question left hanging concerns unions, since the parallels
between many labor-management cooperation initiatives and the integration
approach are multiple (if not perfect), but unions are not mentioned.
Well, that leaves something for the next book. Incredibly well-written,
brutally honest, and extremely insightful! A must-read for academics and
practitioners alike.

5 out of 5 stars A groundbreaking book.......2002-02-02

This is a book we have all been waiting for. After decades of reflection and debate about how best to develop innovative, high performance organisations, on the one hand, and how to enhance gender equity and work-personal life integration on the other hand, this book tells us that the two are not only compatible, but mutually dependent. Written in a non technical and thoroughly engaging style, the book argues that work practices and norms which are inequitable are also ineffective. The authors have the rare knack of presenting a deep and thoughtful analysis in such a clear way that their argument seems simple and obvious.

The heart of the problem lies in the gendered assumptions that underpin many everyday working practices . The authors point out that assumptions based on traditional masculine values and life situations include the defining of commitment in terms of long working hours that preclude time for family or personal life, and the valuing of stereotypical male competencies, such as heroic action and firefighting, above interpersonal and other competencies regarded as more “feminine”. Drawing on action research in a range of organisations they demonstrate how these assumptions and the practices that follow from them, undermine effective performance, but are so taken-for-granted that we rarely question them.

What really distinguishes this book is that the authors go beyond identifying problems to provide a well tried method for bringing about meaningful change It does not offer one size fits all solutions but does provide a process for reaching tailor made solutions. Their method of Collaborative Interactive Action Research (CIAR) includes examining working practice and the assumptions that sustain ineffective practices and gender inequity and then thinking collaboratively with work teams to come up with innovative solutions to what they call the “dual agenda”. The case studies used throughout the book are based on experience in a wide range of organisations so that everybody should be able to identify with at least some of the situations described. This should leave limited room for the traditional cry of “it won’t work here”.

For all those readers who are interested in organisational performance and change and in gender equity, whether or not they have already made the connections between the two, this book will make compulsive reading. Even the most cynical will find it difficult to totally disregard the central message that gender equity and effective performance go hand in hand.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book! New Thinking!.......2002-01-16

This book provides a powerful example that thinking out of the box
can open up a new perspective on a conflict that had seemed to be
unsolvable. And this book is an example that academic research can
lead to applicable and practical results.

The conflict between work life and family life is as old as the
industrial age. We all know it and we all experience it in our daily
life. The four authors, all of them experienced researchers, have
for most of their lives tried to better understand this conflict and
its underlying story. But with this book they went a step beyond
traditional approaches. Based on case studies they unveil a number
of assumptions on which this conflict is based. They challenge
norms and traditional thinking. Career choices, life opportunities,
values and reward structures are based on a specific western type of
thinking that historically has been shaped by white, married,
middle-class men. The result is a system that dominates most of our

work-life and effects our private life, that of men and women. The
authors question this system from two angles. First, they analyze
the often painful struggle between having a life and a career, and
how individuals are trying to balance the two. Second, they show that
the widely believed assumption: "this system is bad for us but good
for the organization" does not hold true. Organizations and work
processes are often inefficient and the individual behavior that is
based on these norms don't move the whole organization forward.

This book does not make the mistake of ending up with an easy answer.
The authors identify leverage points for significant change in
organizations. The book has helped me to rethink basic assumptions
about work and organizations in the industrialized world and to see
new potential for change.

The author of this book did his research well. This book is
not a get rich quick scheme concerning gold, but more like a modern history of gold. It explains where Au comes from, how it's sold, who buys/controls it, why, etc.,etc. Interesting.

5 out of 5 stars The amazing world of gold.......2000-01-16

To someone who is not aware of how gold comes out to final consumers or the industry, this book will illustrate, in a very interesting and easy-to-read pages, all the non seen facets of the most searched metal on earth. When you get jewellery made out of gold ,you would never guess that recovery plants must move over one ton of rock and material to bring up just a few grams of the precious metal... I strongly recommend this book to people of the jewellery trade and to those who are interested to know more about the strategic world of gold.

Learning how to listen correctly is the #1 asset that can help you to become more efficient and prosperous in the work place, as well as help you to be the kind of person that everyone really wants to share their confidences with.

Most people only partially listen while their minds wander off in other directions. We are all guilty of doing this, but with this fantastic CD, "Shhh! Listen, Don't just Hear" by Lillian D. Bjorseth, you will easily learn the correct way to truly listen to what other people are trying to say. Lillian D. Bjorseth does an excellent job teaching you the important theories and practices that you can apply to your every waking moment in order to get more information and truly listen correctly. Listening correctly is the most used communication skill that you can learn to be truly successful. There are many steps in learning this skill and Lillian makes learning fun and inspirational. She will take you through the correct steps, teach you the different types of listening that we do, and help you to overcome the seven biggest blocks that hinder your listening abilities.

Listening requires your full attention and a clear mind. If clearing your mind of other thoughts has been a problem for you, you will learn how to easily understand what has been in your way and how to overcome these issues. She will teach you how to be more open-minded, consciously slow down your thought processes, empathize with the person you are listening to, clarify and confirm what they are saying, and eliminate the distractions going on around you and inside your mind as well.

I learned some very important techniques through this great CD that have helped me to relate to my teenage children a lot better. No one talks faster than a teenager and they want to be totally listened to and if they feel that they are not being totally listened to, they will be the first ones to say, "Mom, you are not listening to me!" Well, this CD has helped me to learn some great techniques like slowing down and allowing my teenagers to say what they need to say without me trying to "read between the lines" of what they are saying. She even gave me some great advice on how to stop worrying and judging while at the same time trying to listen. Now I find that I can just sit back and totally listen completely to what they are telling me without interrupting them or feeling like I want to rush off and do something else. Truly listening to them has helped us grow closer and have a stronger bond in our relationships together. The only problem now is that they keep on talking and talking and talking!!! Ahhh...that's teenagers for you.

Keep in mind that no matter where you are, with your boss, with your co-workers, with your friends, spouse, children, parents, siblings, neighbors, etc...everyone wants to be truly listened too and know that they were heard the first time. When someone starts to talk, whatever they are saying is very important to them. The best skill you can achieve is being a great listener.

Now, I recommend, that you go ahead and get a copy of "Shhh! Listen, Don't Just Hear" by Lillian D. Bjorseth, for yourself today. And, if you want someone to learn how to listen to you more...get them a copy too!

I'm a paralegal, you would think I would know these things. However, I was in a position where I knew I was being wronged, but would have to research and learn an entirely new form of law to make my case. This book had already done that for me. It has simple answers to complex questions; it is organized into a format which allows the reader to make educated decisions. I highly recommend this book whether you are in a situation now, or want to be prepared should you ever find yourself in a situation later.

5 out of 5 stars Employees' most valuable and complete guide: workplace laws.......2003-08-11

Even after working in Corporate America for several years as a manager, it wasn't until I started my own business that I started paying attention to employment laws. And then I was amazed at how little attention I had paid to my rights in the workplace when I was an employee! I now realize that I didn't know anything about my privacy rights, or when I was being illegally discriminated against or what to do if I got fired. Part of the reason was that I had been lucky enough to work for good employers (and especially great bosses) who were very fair and I never felt the need to understand my rights because they took care of protecting them proactively through their internal guidelines and implementation.

I realize now that everyone isn't as lucky when I started hearing the horror stories that some of my friends had to endure. If I had continued working for Corporate America (I started my own small business a few years back) I believe that eventually I would have encountered situations where I would need to know my workplace rights.

That's where this book comes in. It gives a fantastic overview of almost every law imaginable that could apply to you if you are an employee. It is a very detailed book with countless pages spent on comparing the laws as enforced in various states so you can find your own state law and see the details. A good example is the chapter on wages - there are tables comparing the rules for overtime, meal breaks, minimum wages, etc. for each state. In this chapter, I also found an interesting tidbit of information on meal and break periods. It describes the different situations under which your employer is required to pay for meal time!

The entire book is full of helpful and valuable information on your workplace rights. I personally believe that it is good to have this book handy even if you don't need it right now. It makes for interesting reading and you will feel more in control of your behavior at work and not as afraid of your lawful actions. Here's something else to think about - the book has information on the time period in which you can lodge a complaint against your employer after something unlawful has happened to you. Even if you decide not to do anything about something that has happened to you, at least you know the expiration date on your right to complain under the various circumstances!

This book also happens to be one of the more inexpensive books from Nolo. If you are new to Nolo books, you will quickly realize that they do a fantastic job of explaining the law in plain English. And they are very detailed. Enjoy!

Exactly what I was looking for to settle a trust. You need to know the basics of trusts but it fills in the rest of what you need to settle a trust.

1 out of 5 stars How to Settle Your Living Trust:; How you can Settle a LIving Trust Swiftly .......2005-08-14

I am amazed the author of this book had the nerve to write such a book. I used his company to settle my father's estate-it wasn't swiftOR easy-it was a NIGHTMARE- requiring 4 attorneys, three accountants and 3 years of constant legal work to clean up the mess that his company recreated. My father was middle class and trusted the advise he got from Mr. Abts- his advise ended costing us thousands in legal fees-, and 3 years of constant stress to get the mess he created cleaned up. When confronted - we found that not only was his advise bad but that he does not stand behind his advise or work! we had no legal recourse for his major mistakes as he is NOT an attorney!

      2 out of 5 stars Doesn't cover settling a trust........2002-08-08

I am in the process of settling a rather simple trust. However, I found this book of no use. Note the author first wrote a book titled "A Living Trust" which discussed setting up a living trust. "Settle a Living Trust" is a rehash of the "A Living Trust" with a little information about settling a trust. I wouldn't recommend buying this book if your seeking help in settling a trust.

4 out of 5 stars Lawyer Finds Book Useful.......2000-05-28

As an attorney specializing in estate planning for 17 years, I found some good ideas in this book. However, there are a number of statements that are misleading at best and flat-out wrong (from a technical legal and tax standpoint), at worst. Still, your lawyer should be able to spot those and it's still a very worthwhile book, on the whole.

4 out of 5 stars Required Reading BEFORE you die.......1999-06-05

Some repeated sad stories from his first book "The Living Trust". Once past these, there is some very useful info. Read it very carefully, and then take questions to his outfit, or your lawyer, or both. Then advise your next trustees so they know what is coming.

2 out of 5 stars An unexpected disappointment.......2005-05-26

I really wanted to recommend this book -- a rare account of engineering efforts undertook to create Apple Newton - but I cannot do it with clear conscience. On the surface, "Defying gravity" should easily repeat the success of many stories of the birth of the Macintosh. But there's something wrong about this book, something that -- excuse the bad pun -- defies description. Maybe it is the strange format? Or plain ugly visual design? Maybe it's the peculiar page numbering scheme? Perhaps the stories are less captivating, and the photos too artistic? Might be all of that. However, the most important complaint is that, save for two little photos, there's absolutely no information about Newton's unique GUI. The book glosses over the countless difficult decisions that must have been faced during its inception, instead focusing on yet another Newton stage presentation during yet another computer trade show. Pity.

4 out of 5 stars What it really takes to try and make a dent in the universe........2000-12-24

I can still remember when I first opened a Newton MessagePad 130 with backlighting for my 13th birthday. I had heard before I received the 130 that the Newton was notorious for its bad handwriting recognition and its frequent crashes but I decided to give it a shot. After I got aquainted with my MessagePad 130, I began to wonder what all the fuss was about. It worked almost flawlessly. I decided to purchase this book to learn about the development of the product that I adored and loved. I was very impressed with the pictures and was equally impressed with the writing to go along with them. If you want to learn about what it takes to become a computer programmer/engineer, this book is for you. It lets you know about the struggles and the rewards of being part of a team and developing a finished product with a corperate deadline. However, the reason I only gave it four stars is that somebody who had no idea about the Newton wouldn't really know how everything turns out. The book leaves you hanging by letting you know that the Newton DID begin to ship, but thats all. Thats not the authors fault though. As many Newton fans know, Steve Jobs discontinued the Newton because of its lack of sales and basically said it was a drain on the company resources, but thats another story. This book was put together almost flawlessly and deserves more recognition than it has.

5 out of 5 stars Sweat and circuits.......2000-11-10

On my shelf in its protective case is an original Newton (actually a MessagePad 100, the "retooled" version of the original). It is big, clumsy, slow, chews through its batteries in 20 minutes of use, and crash-prone. It is also a miracle of organization and intelligent function, especially when compared with my trusty Palm (which nevertheless runs circles around Newton in usefulness and functionality).

DEFYING GRAVITY deepened my appreciation of Newton (even down to the little red wire that seems to be escaping from the case ... a manufacturing boo-boo that makes sense in context). Taking the late-1980s visionary doodles of John Sculley, Apple's Pepsi-bred CEO, and "productizing" them under the pressure of internal competition and external expectations, required a deep-thought-driven development effort that ground down the members of Newton's team. One young engineer committed suicide not long before the launch -- though a Newton connection can't be proven, the 18 hour days and constant frustrations could not have helped him.

In this volume, with an unconventional page numbering scheme based on counting down the days until product launch, the reader experiences with the team the pressures that came from failure; from trying to pull together too many new technologies in a first-ever device; from communicating a totally new paradigm and avoiding the inevitable attempts to have that paradigm "pigeon-holed" into more familiar existing concepts.

The photographs are sometimes grainy and stark, just like the late nights spent with troublesome components and misbehaving code.

They drew me in: I celebrated with the team when Newton had its first successful public demo, after misbehaving right up to the demo time. The authors bring the reader right up the threshold of the new era: product launch.

Fortunately, they don't have to deal with the later market failure of Newton: 30,000 original Newtons bulldozed into a California landfill, incremental improvements but no marketed attempt at a smaller form factor, and the abrupt demise of the platform under the "new Apple"'s Steve Jobs just as a fast-enough MessagePad, an incredibly cute and functional eMate, and a critical mass of software development had been achieved.

Just as well -- this book is unconventional, and much more effective than a dry case study in showing just how much work goes into a new product category. I think it works in that regard, and also doubles as an unusual and attractive "coffee-table" book. Mine is staying with my Newton, to keep some history with this curious device when my grandchildren stumble across it in 40 years.

4 out of 5 stars An engaging glimpse into the glory and mayhem of Apple.......1999-03-18

Follow the Newton from conception to birth. It's a facinating look at how creativity and business clash and merge to form a unique product for profit. Our post-Newton perspective only serves to make the story more poignant.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent look into Computer industry........1999-03-15

This book is an excellent look into how the computer industry operates, from the CEO's time, to product delays, and product design and introduction issues. I only wish the book was 5000 pages. A *MUST* read for a Newton user. A *MUST* read for any Apple Fan.
