Good explanations, some product bias.......2007-03-09

I knew very little about High Availability (HA) before I read this book. Now I feel I can hold my own with the propeller-heads in the data center.
The book gives a thorough treatment of the subject. The explanations were good; the graphics add value but are a little basic; also there is some favorable bias towards Veritas who originally published the book. (Veritas has some high availability software and services you can buy.) But overall a definite keeper. I recommend it if you're interested in High Availability design and concepts.

More on the relationship between security issues and HA.......2004-04-13

as I was reading this otherwise excellent book, I noticed that there was a very important theme (to my understanding), which wasn't honored enough attention; namely, issues relating to the `Secure Socket Layer' protocol and availability, which directly translates to money coming your or someone else's way.

How does it affect the HA and your web applications architecture? SSL Certificates in a HA setting? . . . etc. All diagrams would present the web farm directly facing the internet!?

I even stopped reading and went to the index looking for it and found that there were indeed two -very basic- blurbs on it on pages 301 and 352.

I know security is a theme by itself, but the relationship between security issues and HA is way too fundamental to simply skim over them. As a matter of fact I would say that number one issue affecting HA is security.

Also the book has a very SA oriented (am I talking about another book already? ;-)) style. I would like to read a little more about `the Physics' of it. For example, cosmic rays' (I am not joking), like neutrinos, influence on the proper/stable functioning of computers is greater than the, comparatively speaking, very anomalous `split brain' types of errors and more on, electric accidents, the effective use of ECC memory. Should it go in the Web servers, too, in addition to the data centers? Why?

Cabling and electromagnetic inductance issues are mentioned in the `Tales from the Field', but I could see some people expecting a more rounding explanation/solution to the `tales'. In the case in which they talk about a java web server people might have the impression that `Java' or its use in a web server was wrong, which
I could tell was most probably not the case, but the use of JSP without specifying the sessions shouldn't be automatically created, which is the default many developers forget.

Even better than the first edition!.......2004-04-06

I bought the first edition of this book, and it became so dog-eared from everyone borrowing it that I was about to order another, when I saw there was a secodn edition. This one is even better that the first. If you need action items and you need set-up help for providing the kind of network your boss wants and needs, this is the book for you.

Great book on system/data availability.......2004-02-29

Very good coverage of HA issues. Many people get a warm fuzzy having one piece of kit that is "reliable" or "redundant". To get substantial gains in availability requires a more complete systems view. This book reviews many aspects, and paths that can be taken towards increasing availability. I heartily recommended this book.

Broad coverage for a broad audience.......2003-12-31

Hal and Evan have produced an excellent overview of the field of reliable computer systems which is useful to system administrators, system architects and to non-technical people who need a general understanding of the field.

As a system architect with a programming background facing the task of designing a simple highly reliable system this provided an excellent perspective on the different issues and technologies. It left me well prepared to then delve into the product literature of specific products that addressed the issues relevant to the project.

I believe this would also be an excellent book for IT managers who are looking at commissioning a "high availability" system, whether from an external software integrator or an internal company IT department. In particular, it describes what is easily achievable, what is achievable only at great expense, and what is simply not doable. It also emphasises the roles and responsibilities of people involved in ongoing support of HA systems; this book clearly describes how creating such a system is not the end but the start of providing reliable services.

The reading will be challenging for those of non-technical background, but the book keeps its focus on why you would use each technology rather than simply how each is applied, which makes it relevant to a wide range of readers. It should also ensure that this book remains useful even as technologies change.

What this book does not do is provide a formula for setting up a system. It's a great first step, though.

In addition the writing is clear, structure and flow are good and mistakes are few. Not the lightest of reads, but then again this is a serious topic about systems worth serious money. And at 550-odd pages of dense reading material, this book is well worth investing in.

This book was not my cup of tea - to much law and stuff. I would love to have seen more advice regarding the adult biz but turns out this book is more of a history book and 2257 regulation book. But for people working in a law firm dealing with the adult industry I guess this book is perfect.

Good, but not complete.......2002-02-24

Well, here's the scoop. I met Fred twice at Conventions. The first time was immediately after he closed the hardcover version of the book. The second, while he was reseraching for the paperback update. Now, I don't know how to say this without being arrogant, but Fred missed it. You see, I am the Inventor of the Virtual Sex Machine, the worlds first interactive sexual simulation system for use with a computer. When fred was doing his research for each of the books, he missed us the first time, despite the fact that we are very public (virtualsexmachine.com) and have been since early 1996. Had he done even a cursury search, he would have found us. We have been covered by all the major news sources (ABC, NBC, MSNBC, Playboy, Hustler, Gear, and others.)He talks of Entrpreneurs in the Cyberage, not just the adult industry. We are most definately Front and center and were not included. I could have MAYBE understood not being included in the original Hardcover as just missing us. But we met with him twice since then, and there is NO excuse for not even a mention in the update. I bought both books expecting to see something and was very disspointed. As far as I know, we are the ONLY adult company that has Patents pending on new technologies in this industry. A search of any of the normal research areas would have turned this up. We supplied him with full coverage and contact information regarding the product, and he interviewed us twice. You may say it's sour grapes for not being included, but the fact is, we are a company in this industry with the newest and most advanced technology, and it should have been included. Maybe he'll get it right in the next book. To Fred: I'm sorry Fred, but you have really dissapointed me with your research abilities. Despite that, I still have to reccomend the book, because it is well done for the coverage that it does deal with. I just think Fred doesn't quite "get it" beyond a pure dry research approach. The book is a slow read, and is very much technical. Written more like a textbook. (With some of the best and exciting parts missing)

Porn to be Lane.......2002-01-12

From Lane's perspective on pornography, he should have surfed more porn and read fewer Time Magazines. Although he provides a very useful and entertaining history of porn in America, he lacks a real "insider's" experience. This could have come with more actual interviews with porn business pornographers other than over-publicised Danni Ashe.

This is not to say the book is bad. We all know the state of porn - or atleast you would if you're interested in reading this book. For what I required, Lane's book was almost perfect. He organized time, theme and place well, offered may other online sources and had a good chronology of events. If you're writing a TV pop documentary on the porn industry, it's a great resource. Lane's book ain't too heavy -but it's a good source for ideas.

A great outside view.......2001-09-04

A well-written review from a professsional outsider perspective. I work in this industry in a management roll and was impressed with Fred's take on things. I later met Fred and have since become friends with him. He's very serious about his work and brings a fresh perspective to a misunderstood industry.

Obscene Profits is the first book to pick up when researching about or doing business with the adult entertainment industry. Mr. Lane seems to have an insider's point of view coupled with an academician's intellect...which makes for engaging reading. For those fascinated by the biggest moneymaking sector on the Internet, this is a must-read.

Dave is preaching some good lessons about life in this book. Values, vision, intensity, patience, wisdomonics (his word).... but the key to me is contentment. Learn to be happy that you are loved by God, and stop looking at spending money on stuff to make you happy. See yourself as a participant in God's world doing His will, and stop focusing on yourself. I know this is easier said than done, and especially if you have a family to support (you always want to give them the best stuff). This isn't your typical financial planning book, or even your typical how to get out of debt book, but it is filled with good thoughts about life in general, and if you live them, Dave promises other problems (e.g., money) will fade away, or at least get under control. I give this a big thumbs up.

Dave's teaching is practical and common sense. If you follow his plan you will have peace and prosparity. His simple teaching may be scoffed at because it seems common sense, however most people don't follow this and they suffer. I hope you'll read it for your benefit. If you want to have more than enough in your financies and in your life, then read this book.

Dave's open and honest text helps the reader look deep inside himself to look not only for finanial peace but peace in knowing that the reader can sleep at night with all the other parts of his life no matter who he or she is or how finacially secure he or she might beRamsey has worked hard at his own success and makes no bones about sharing a life that is more about integrity and doing the right thing than the typical finacial strategy books on the market.His tips are solid as a rock and should not be ignored. Especially in todays enviroment where words like integrity, honesty and courage seem to be set aside for excuses and lies. The book takes Dave's first book and drives home the behavioral changes that need to take place to be successful in all aspects of life. Great Job Dave and thank you.

"The Last Empire" is a history of De Beers Consolidated Mines from the discovery in 1867 of diamonds in South Africa until 1993. Author Stefan Kanfer chronicles the diamond rush in late 19th century South Africa, with its colorful, unscrupulous speculator-magnates, black diggers, and illegal diamond traffic. He recounts 3 generations of diamond men, starting with De Beers founder Cecil Rhodes and other plutocrat-statesmen of the first generation who operated amidst tensions between British, Boer, and black populations. Ernest Oppenheimer, founder of Anglo-American gold mining, brought De Beers into the 20th century and created the diamond syndicate that we know today through the turmoil of 2 world wars, the Great Depression, labor revolts, and racial strife. His son Harry Oppenheimer, the third generation of De Beers royalty, expanded the company and ruthlessly consolidated its power while he embraced progressive politics at home.

The history of De Beers is no less than the history of South Africa itself: complicated, controversial, predatory, violent, and idealistic. South Africa was built on the diamond business. The author points out that De Beers fits the dictionary definition of "empire" better than any other commercial entity. "The Last Empire" leaves the reader in awe of that empire, intrigued by the adventurers and swindlers that created fortunes from big holes in the ground, and at the same time taken aback by the inescapable power of De Beers. Stefan Kanfer clearly admires the Oppenheimers' accomplishments, though he also illustrates their hypocrisies. He does not express an opinion as to the benefits or downside of De Beers' price controls, but Kanfer does detail De Beers' more ruthless campaigns to prevent devaluation by controlling supply in the 1970s and 1980s. I would have liked more information about the market for industrial diamonds, but this is absorbing, essential reading for anyone curious about the history or economics of diamonds.

A lot has changed since 1993, when "The Last Empire" was published. Then, the wholesale market for diamonds was oversaturated due to recessions in the West and Japan, De Beers controlled nearly 90% of the world's diamonds, its companies constituted 54% of the listings on South Africa's stock exchange and accounted for 25% of the nation's wealth. This book was written with De Beers in the midst of a diamond glut crisis but with a firm hold on its dominant position. Now the recession, and apartheid, are over, South Africa's economy is growing, but De Beers controls no more than 50% of the world's diamonds. The value of gold is through the roof, however, and De Beers sister company Anglo-American is the largest gold producer in the West. The Empire still stands even if the cartel falters. "The Last Empire" is a fine introduction to the tumultuous and exotic history of South Africa and an impressively researched account of how the diamond industry came to be what it is today.

Does not live up to its title.......2005-03-02

This book's title describes it as one about "De Beers, Diamonds, and the World." Instead, a more accurate title would have described the book as telling of "Political Inequality Between the Races in South Africa." True, the book discusses De Beers quite a bit, but the discussions seem incidental to the author's focus on the plight of South African blacks throughout history. The description of De Beers's diversification is less than cursory; the book often omits major business decisions completely but then later assumes knowledge of them by the reader. For instance, the book leaves out any mention of *how* De Beers came to own an interest in copper mining, but still mentions such mining interest a couple of times toward the end. Further, complex business relationships, such as that between Anglo-American, Consolidated, and De Beers, need much more explanation than they get. The author spends considerably more time discussing how "Anglo-American" was chosen as the company's name than what its exact corporate form is and how it its relationship to De Beers works out in practice. Last, I take issue with the writing style itself. The prose is heavy and dry; even interesting characters' stories are flaccid and dull. Overall, this book is a good complement to other South African history books, but as a book about diamonds and the workings of De Beers (the book it puts itself out to be), "Last Empire" falls utterly flat.

One of the best in its field.......2004-09-27

Of the books I've recently read on the subject of diamonds, "The Last Empire" is without peer. It's more a history of the diamond fields during the early years than a study of the diamond industry as a whole, but it offers many captivating stories of those times and Kanfer's writing brings them alive. I won't use the usual "I couldn't put it down" cliche (it's a bit big to read at one sitting) but I couldn't wait to start reading it again.

It explains in great detail the convoluted shenanigans of those early "pioneers", how greed made South Africa into a land of woe and strife, and how one man managed to gain a diamond monopoly and turn it into a huge industry. I learned quite a bit from reading it, and I only wish an updated edition were available.

Thank you Mr. Stefan Kanfer for tackling the project on the diamond empire. The subject matter is not easy to write, but Mr. Kanfer managed to tell a story in a way that portrays a business biography in an academic yet exciting tone. "The Last Empire" is a very thoroughly researched and extremely well written book. I've learnt so much about the history of the most powerful diamond organization in the world (The DeBeers), its operation, structures, system, human interaction and the people behind the industry. Lots of great pictures and the stories of old Africa is filled with romantic images it makes reading a pleasure. Truly inspiring!
