Book Description
An examination of British economy from 1790-1914 and the relationship between economic theory and historical reality.
Customer Reviews:
19th century england and internet bubble.......2003-03-03
I think this is the book I read in 1969 about the Depression of 1888 in England---somtimes referred to as "after the rairoads were built". Rostow's analysis allowed me to see parallels in 1990's and avoid the crash and prosper in its aftermath. Great economic history. ape
A scholarly look at the British economy of the 19th Century........1999-12-10
This book is a collection of essays, each examining various aspects of the British economy in the Nineteenth Century. It contains quite a large number of charts, and is heavily footnoted. These essays are written in a scholarly (almost turgid) style, which means that the casual reader will have some trouble following them. Fortunately, this book does examine the Great Depression of 1873-96 in depth, and from several different angles.
Below is part of the table of contents. I include this to give the potential purchaser an idea of all that is covered in this book.
Part I: ANALYSIS
I. Trends in the British Economy: 1790-1914
II. Cycles in the British Economy: 1790-1914
III. Investment and the Great Depression
IV. Investment and Real Wages: 1873-86
Part II: ECONOMIC FACTORS AND POLITICS
V. Trade Cycles, Harvests, and Politics: 1790-1850
VI. Economic Factors and Politics: Britain in the Nineteenth Century
Part III: ECONOMIC THEORIES
VII. Explanations of the Great Depression
VIII. Bagehot and the Trade Cycle
Part IV: Narrative
IX. The Depression of the Seventies: 1874-9
Section I: General
Section II: The Money Market
Section III: Long-Term Investment
Section IV: Commerce and Industry
Section V: Labour
Note: The Principal Statistical Indexes
APPENDIX. Mr. Kalecki on the Distribution of Income, 1880-1913

Generic How to Start a Bussiness Advice.......2005-08-10
I was disappointed in this CD compilation because the advice is too generic and not focused on the consulting business. There was advice relevant to restaurants, and choosing a personal computer which I in my opinion is outside the intended scope of this book. I for one certainly didn't purchase this audio book to get pointers on which PC to buy. The data CD is useful if you have nothing else, but there are way better programs out there for making forms, contracts, business plans etc. The last CD, a compilation of short stories of successful entrepreneurs was ok, but nothing to get too exited about. Each story is shorter than two minutes, so there is not enough time for you to identify with any of these stories. In short, I would not recommend this purchase.

Customer Reviews:
not much information.......2005-02-26
i bought this book thinking it would give me more information than what i could find on the internet. however, there wasn't really anything in here that i hadn't already read.
also, the salary information in the mechanical engineering section seems very low, at least compared to other things i've read, as well i've engineers i've talked to.
if you really want to learn more about engineering as a career (or any job for that matter), visit this website: http://www.bls.gov/search/ooh.asp?ct=OOH. the author even refers to this site in the book. the book itself basically repeats and summarizes stuff from the website, but leaves out a lot of more important material.
Poorly written, but informative........2003-06-02
I found the author's writing style to be a bit too ambiguous and obscure for my tastes: this book is definitely not written in layman's terms. But then again, anyone entering the engineering field will probably end up reading a great deal of content such as this. Overall, I think this book is worth its meager price, for the sheer amount of information.

Customer Reviews:
I needed this book!.......2005-08-21
I LOVED this book. It was challenging but encouraging. I felt as though the author was sitting at dinner with me laughing, relating, and encouraging me to win at the money game. I CAN actually handle investing and saving and tithing and controlling my spending now, hopefully :-) Every girl needs this book, especially single gals.
Good Book.......2005-05-27
This is a good book and I used some of the suggestions in the book to help me save money and not spend it constantly. The book could have used a little less of the religion speeches, but overall I underlined and circled alot of things.
Great advice... A must read for all women who love to shop!.......2004-03-17
This book was very enjoyable to read, which is not usually true about most finance books! Throughout the book, I found myself taking notes and underlining suggestions as to how I could apply to my life. The author uses examples from her own life, which makes the reader feel like she is your friend sharing her own personal advice.
Fun and to the point.......2004-03-15
Fun and to the point...an easy read about a topic that could be painful and very detailed. The cover is what had me pick it up, and I'm glad it did as the content is why I enjoyed this book. It offers some useful tools for thinking of my financial future!
Well written with loads of common sense advice.......2004-03-11
This is a book that asks you to look into your spending habits and why you may be in the financial position that you are. The world is full of opportunity and choices. This is a well written, sensible, accessible and often times hilarious guide to financial well being. The questionnaires at the end of each section should cause the reader to sit back and think about his or her actions. The book contains loads of advice on how an individual can take charge of their financial situation.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent business stories.......2003-07-09
A terrific collection of well-written and fascinating pieces of business journalism. I picked this book up at an airport expecting to read just a few of the stories that looked interesting. I ended up reading the entire book cover to cover. Each story offers an insightful and interesting view of a particular business or industry. For anyone interested in the corporate scandals that seem to be erupting in the business world on a near-weekly basis, you will find yourself completely absorbed by this book in no time at all.
Interesting Reading to Know More About USA Business.......2003-05-16
This is a collection of 30 business-related articles published in newspaper and magazines in yr2002. Many of them in this edition are about ethics, e.g. questionable accounting practices, role conflict of auditors and financial analysts, overpaid executives etc..There are other topical subjects, e.g. influence of technology, free trade, globalisation, workplace diversity.
The editors have picked up many articles that raise insightful questions and issues. They provide ¡§behind the scene¡¨ information and personalities. Interesting to read casually. The stories talk little about making money or improving corporate performance. They are more about ethnics, fairness and justice. Some articles are openly critical about individual companies or persons.
This book is very enriching to readers who are not familiar with American business practices. For example, non-Americans can have a strong feel about how serious are antitrust investigations and lawsuits in The USA.. The coverage of industries is wide. In addition to popular businesses like IT, finance, manufacturing, you also have banana planting, ice harvesting, auctioning, religious organisations etc..
