5 out of 5 stars An energy & renewal oracle.......2003-10-07

Last Saturday, I sat with a coffee on a bench outside Quatermaine's and enjoyed about an hour and a half of reading Running on Plenty. That morning break was followed by regular respites of reading time during the following week. I confess to have skipped around and not even attempted to read front to back. Not my way. Yet, it didn't take long for me to run out of pages that had none of my highlighted markings on it.

This book is a solid contribution to my professional and personal life. The visuals are friendly and effective -- the key points, inspirational quotes, road to renewal signs, spaciousness, tailor-made graphics, soulful writing, practicality, and page after loving page of simple wisdom -- all satisfying and nourishing.

I appreciated how this book began, with both authors telling personal stories of learning first-hand about the importance of balance and renewal. Each story was poignant and something that anyone can identify with, I would imagine. It's a friendly, friendly book -- from colors to typeface to spacing to mixing of many inspirational and helpful lines from endless sources & resources. There is so much good work & research supporting what has been assembled and written, which is immediately apparent to the reader, that it had the effect of relaxing me --I knew I was in good hands, and that I was being enriched in ways that I needed.

One final observation that has stayed with me...when I closed the book and went to my car to drive home, and on the way home I noticed a very good, rich, dynamic energy in my solar plexus. It wasn't the caffeine because I'm strictly on decaf now. So, I know it was the stirring from the tone and gentle massaging of the stories, insights, resonance, and spirit of your book. That was a wonderful gift. It surprised me to have had an effect on my energy simply from the reading. I think that happens in the presence of beauty, goodness, and truth, which has been masterfully conveyed and honored.

This book has become an important companion, helping me to care for myself so that I can care more effectively for others.

4 out of 5 stars Great for professionals providing opinion testimony........2007-09-16

I was a drug analyst with a crime lab, and went solo for personal reasons. I was hoping to find a book that would help someone like me draw up a marketing plan and a contract. You know, some of the in's and out's of self-employment.

Although I was able to pull a few gems from it (I was able to create a contract via the suggestions in this book), in general this book is not written for people like me. It is geared more towards professional who will be offering opinion testimony from specific fields, such as engineers or doctors. It is great for someone like that, but not necessarily for someone who has worked in a lab.

Don't get me wrong - to me, this book was worth the price just for its insights into developing a contract. After all, if you are already in the forensic field, you know how lawyers are about contracts. It's just that you will get a lot more out of this if you are a non-forensic professional looking to offer forensic testimony.

Even as technology has allowed us to connect with an ever-expanding global network through the click of a mouse, face-to-face communication is still as important as ever. Improving one's in-person communication may seem nonessential and downright quaint in this computerized age, yet many workplace situations, often those involving conflict, feelings, or other sensitive issues, still demand human contact. FACE-TO-FACE COMMUNICATION explores why personal contact remains the most powerful type of human interaction and what readers can do to improve their skills to become excellent communicators.

          Book Description

In this groundbreaking career guide, Janet Katz gives a tour of the nursing profession and helps prospective students evaluate whether it’s right for them. Through personal anecdotes and interviews with women and men from a wide range of nursing specialties, Katz examines what it means to be a nurse and addresses the misconceptions that surround the profession. She introduces readers to the diverse career possibilities within nursing, such as working in a helicopter emergency unit, conducting scientific research, or providing home health care. Katz also offers practical advice on each step toward becoming a nurse, from choosing the right school to finding your first job to managing on-the-job stress.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars informative, brave, well written.......2006-07-07

I found this book to be exactly what I was looking for to explain the world of being an RN. The book very clearly states it is for those interested in becoming an RN. Janet covers what it means to be a nurse, skills, brief view of different types of nursing, education requirements, and social/patient activism. I read one of the reviews that said it was turned off by the politics in this book, but I feel that Katz appropriately addressed the need for advocacy both at the patient level as well as a policy level (health care system). If you're wondering 'should I become a nurse?' this book is a good way to help answer that question.

4 out of 5 stars Must have for every nursing student.......2005-10-20

The first 3 chapters dispel many myths about nursing and has a lot of students and nurses give their point of view on moments that really touched them. Ms. Katz also talked about why people enter nursing, even men, and how to decide if nursing is really the career for you. I also enjoyed the part in chapter 2 entitled "The Daily Grind: Where do Nurses Work and What do The do There?" It really shows how hard and heart-wrenching nursing can be. Seeing so many personal perspectives really helped me see what I am in for. So many things can go wrong, make you cry, make you laugh, or fill you with joy.

Chapter 4 deals with finding the right school for you and includes the pros for the BSN option as well as the ADN option. The following chapter is about actually getting accepted into a nursing program, including tuition, science class, and application information.

Chapter 6 is for those who are now getting to start school. It's only 4 pages and seems like an extremely quick rundown on getting to the point where you can become an RN (the NCLEX). Chapter 7 deals with graduate school (also only 4 pages) and gives information on being a midwife, a nurse practioner, a nurse anethetist, and a clinical nurse practioner.

Chapter 8 is about finding a job and gives several ideas for doing so, which are helpful. The next chapter is "Working for a Living." This is an interesting chapter as it gives statistics on the nursing field. Chapter 10 is about job survival.. dealing with difficult people, taking care of yourself, and advancing your career.

This is a very good read, but I think Ms. Katz could have added more information. This is pretty basic stuff and a fairly slim book. I wish she would have had study tips, dealing with classmates and professors, and handling clinicals during school, but there was none of that. It's still a good buy and does have useful information, though.

4 out of 5 stars For those who are thinking about a meaningful career.......2004-11-23

Very helpful and straightforward written. I would love a new edition of this book, as the first and last edition is from 1999. Although it will be very nice to see the data updated. It gave me a wonderful clue of what nursing is all about.

          2 out of 5 stars Okay, but..........2003-08-05

I quickly grew tired with the author's leftist political views, which she felt compelled to insert in nearly every chapter. And unions? She's all for them, and doesn't seem to understand that there are those that want nothing to do with them. Also, she completely negates those with ASN nursing degrees, relagating them to being slightly above NA's on the nursing food chain. No mention of LPN's at all.

Which is disappointing, since I am enrolled in an LPN program, with a goal of becoming a PRN - the care I received at two Spokane hospitals (during the birth of my children) was the turning point of my interest in nursing.

4 out of 5 stars good book for those thinking about nursing.......2003-05-17

This book was great reading material. I've already made up my mind to become a nurse. The book is directed to those who are considering a career in nursing. However, I enjoyed reading it just the same and the ideas presented reinforced my commitment to nursing.

One interesting point is that Janet Katz drives home the need for leadership within nursing and how nursing can be as versatile as you want it to be. This really helped me because I now realize how I can make nursing fit in my life.

One captivating chapter is named "You don't have to like blood to be a nurse" or something like that. For a brief moment, I thought that not liking blood would be detrimental to my nursing career. In her book, Janet demonstrates why this doesn't have to be the case.

Another point covered is a comparison of associate's, diploma and BSN programs and Janet does a good job doing this. She also describes education beyond the RN degree which opened up my mind to countless possibilities. I read it in a day!

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a debt elimination plan that works!.......2005-04-08

I've lived most of my adult life carrying credit card and loan balances. I've read many articles and 'quick-fix' guides to paying off debt. But, it wasn't until I read One Paycheck at a Time did I really feel I had found a practical plan. The book is a quick and easy read, and the concepts are very easy to understand and immediately put into practice. Most of all, however, this book made me realize that implications and costs of carrying debt, and really inspired me to do something about it! The author presents each new chapter in very down-to-earth ways. And, it's comforting to know that she has had times like I am experiencing, where she's had to practice self-discipline and do without certain things. Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars great for people in and out of debt.......2005-03-24

Kimberly Griffiths' no-nonsense approach to debt management is truly remarkable. In her book, "One Paycheck at a Time", she guides the reader by the hand in an easy-to-follow step-by-step process to becoming debt-free. There is no sensation, no empty promises. She challenges the reader to apply the principles along with hardwork, discipline and perseverance. Without asking them to live an ascetic lifestyle, she asks the reader to assess his current situation with a master plan to beat the debt. While I have a debt-free lifestyle, I found myself rethinking how I approach spending money and immediately taking action to ensure I never "sink in the hole". Her book is useful not only for people who are currently in debt, but also for those who wish to maximize their cash flow by thinking smart about where their money goes.

Her non-judgemental tone takes the shame away from being in debt. She has been there herself, and after digging her way out of $25,000 in credit card charges accumulated by her gambling ex-husband, she applied her prolific financial knowledge to help others, too. Her sometimes hilarious suggestions such as literally soaking your credit card in water until it freezes in the freezer are so outrageous that they work! Reader beware. Credit card plastic melts in the microwave!

Griffiths requires the reader to shift his thinking completely about paying back debt on a monthly basis. After all, she reasons, you are usually paid more often than that. "Stop thinking you have to pay creditors once a month - those are their terms, not yours, especially if you're paid more than once a month." Her suggestions simply make sense.

Her simple exercises motivate the reader with her take-charge attitude. "One Paycheck at a Time" is an inspirational example of how anything is possible with the right tools. Kimberly Griffiths offers them to us all for the taking. Her book is an incredible investment in your future. I highly recommend it for its clear language, solid ideas, and its ultimate effectiveness.

            5 out of 5 stars A Hands-on Approach to Debt Reduction.......2004-03-29

Almost all personal finance books tell you to eliminate your credit card debt . . . and to start by paying off the amount with the largest interest rate. Then, they almost all tell you to switch balances to take advantage of 6 month low, "teaser" rates from new card companies. Others go on to encourage you to save money in other ways, such as by refinancing your house, cutting up your credit cards, holding yard sales and carrying your lunch. One Paycheck at a Time has all of that advice, too. What makes this book different is that the advice is structured around a process for measuring, tracking and reducing your expenses. The center point of this material is a form that is applied to each paycheck that the reader receives each year.

In the beginning, you have to do a lot of work to get started. But if you hired a financial advisor, you would have to do the same work (or pay a lot of money to have the financial advisor do it for you). So the work is necessary. You set up a budget for each item you have to regularly spend money on, and then keep the remainder of each paycheck in cash to meet other routine expenses and to generate savings for rainy day items.

The system is one remarkably like the one that my parents used successfully for many years. For most of those years, they did not have a checking account. They would go to the supermarket to cash Dad's paycheck, buy some groceries, and keep the rest in cash which they allocated to different envelopes for different purposes. They kept track of what occasional expenses were likely to be (such as the annual car insurance premium) and saved the amounts needed in advance, one paycheck at a time. If you keep that concept in mind, you'll have the essence of this book.

The book assumes that you get paid twice a month (although you can calculate the amounts easily for a monthly paycheck), and takes you through 24 pay periods. In each pay period, there are extra little lessons on how to save or earn more.

Unlike most of these books where the author is a multimillionaire financial planner who has an accountant to do all of this nitty-gritty for them, Ms. Griffiths is a woman whose divorce left her at age 22 with $25,000 in credit card debt piled up by a gambling husband. It took her 15 years to eliminate that debt . . . and she has created this system to help you get faster results than she did. So she's been there . . . and done that. Despite that experience she doesn't personalize the story very much. This is a personal finance book rather than an autobiography.

If you are terrible with numbers, you will probably have to get someone to help you. Be sure to get a calculator to help you add up lots of numbers and later divide them.

After you've been using this system for 3 or 4 months, it shouldn't take long to apply it. One of the strengths of the approach is that it encourages you to see what you are spending. Seeing the details will probably help you identify lots of ways to save.

If you are looking for advanced tips on saving money, I didn't find any here that I didn't know about already (and I already use many of them). So I think the tips (beyond the system) will be new mostly to young people and to those who have not read other personal finance books . . . or simply haven't thought much about money management.

The book is thin and a quick read. If you actually apply it, you will be only reading a few pages during each pay period. So if you like to keep it simple . . . and want to system to provide some discipline, I think One Paycheck at a Time is a winner for you.

If you decide to read and use the book, I do recommend that you supplement it for investment advice as your debt drops and you have money to invest in areas other than company pension plans.

5 out of 5 stars What a unique and logical approach to money management........2004-03-12

While the world is stuck on paying bills by the month, "One Paycheck at a Time" is providing an effective alternative, managing your money paycheck to paycheck.

Kimberly Griffiths, the author, is challenging you to look at your money differently and not be sucked in to allowing your creditors to dictate the terms of how you pay your bills. She shows you in great detail how this method can and will provide you with a better understanding of your complete financial picture with debt reduction and eventual elimination as the goal.

What really caught my eye was the enormous amount of money saving strategies found in this book. Each section provides you with tips, tricks and ideas on how to make managing your money a lot simpler and much more organized.

"One Paycheck at a Time" is not just for those experiencing money problems. I would highly recommend it to anyone that is looking for a better way to reduce their debt and get a handle on their finances.

As someone reeling from both college graduation and divorce in the same month, this was just the book I needed to get my finances under control. The friendly step by step style offers both humor (if you have to- put your credit card in a bowl of water in the freezer!) and candor (now that Card #1 is paid off, cancel it!) while explaining how to be free of debt and create savings.

            4 out of 5 stars Pretty good........2007-08-15

Very good book from a history perspective, providing ample information about the many factors that collided at the right place and time to allow the formation of ESPN. Almost too much information, in some respects. Once ESPN gets underway, though, the history aspect takes a backseat to the various (well-supported) allegations made against ESPN, largely misogyny and sexism. Though important in their own right, and in the context of ESPN's history, perhaps they were featured more prominently than they deserved in this book. Also, significant criticism was leveled by Keith Olbermann, the talented former anchor. While admittedly he provided numerous good quotes and strong counterarguments to ESPN policies and practices, he may have been featured too prominently in the book as well. It also is somewhat suspect featuring him so prominently, when he has such an obvious ax to grind with the organization, as well as a somewhat checkered past himself. All in all though, a very entertaining and informative read, especially for those of us with a strong interest in ESPN. After this, you probably won't ever look at the Worldwide Leader the same again (but at least you'll understand how they're capable of putting out godawful crap like "Who's Now").

1 out of 5 stars Sensationalist reporter bores readers.......2006-01-22

This writer seems to have the single purpose of pointing out the flaws of ESPN and leaves out all the great and interesting stories I wanted to read about. Again and again he writes about sexual harrasment at the network. Well, yes, that's bad stuff, and worthy of a chapter. But that is basically the subject of the whole book! How about some good stories about the anchors and play-by-play of how they got some of the biggest scoops, etc? This book is all about the internal bickering and problems. At the end he takes a couple more swipes at Berman and ESPN for a few mistakes they and their people made. He just wants to uncover dirt and obsess about it. Basically, it reads as if Keith Olbermann told him what to write and he wrote it verbatim. Had potential to be a great book, but instead it is just another loser reporter taking shots at all the weaknesses of a great American success story, leaving out all the wonderful parts. Yes, we've heard it all before: American businesses are all evil, right? If you think we are so bad, Freeman, move somewhere else.

2 out of 5 stars not bad, but too much sexual harassment angle.......2003-11-01

I think Freeman's book is a good history of how ESPN became the media giant that it is (I was born in 1982-- i cant imagine life without ESPN), but the book focused WAY too much on the sexual harassment angle, and it bogs down the story.

            1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing..........2002-10-09

I'd read mixed reviews when Freeman's history first came out, so I wasn't anticipating a great book. Unfortunately, ...ESPN: The Uncensored History... fell fall short of even my rather tempered expectations.

A large part of the problem is that ...Uncensored... can't decide whether it is a corporate retrospective or a tell-all expose. Freeman spends the first third of the book on a rather dull detailing of how ESPN was founded, the close calls it encountered in finding financing and trying to stay afloat, and the power struggle that ensued among the founding fathers. Only the principals and their family would find this portion even mildly interesting.

As the book progresses, it switches into expose-mode, teasing the reader with hints of scandals behind the scenes. However, even though the author spends page after page dwelling haughtily on the personal foibles of ESPN personnel, particularly focusing on a culture which seemingly encouraged sexual harassment, Freeman mostly avoids naming names, with one very notable exception.

Freeman then goes back and forth, between a dry rendering of ESPN's corporate evolution from a backwater independent cable channel to the crown jewel of Disney's purchase of ABC, and a bowdlerized tale of malfeasance among the employees of ESPN.

Occasionally, Freeman tries to focus on some of the anchors which the so many viewers have seen so often, but even then, the portraits seem two-dimensional. Other than Mike Tirico, who is portrayed as a Jekyll-and-Hyde family man/sexual predator, and Keith Olbermann, cast as the tortured genius, the sketches of the on-air personalities seem rather hollow.

All in all, disappointing, and not worth the time.

5 out of 5 stars Strongly recommended reading for all sports buffs.......2002-03-26

ESPN: The Uncensored History by sports journalist Michael Freeman is an eye-opening, bare-all look at the global telecommunications network that since its inception in 1979 as the "Entertainment and Sports Programming Network", has gone on to become virtually synonymous with televised sports. From its relatively humble origins, ESPN has gone on to expand into additional offerings for the dedicated sports enthusiast including ESPN2, ESPN Classic Sports, ESPNews, and ESPN Magazine. Extensively researched, ESPN: The Uncensored History presents a fascinating, candid, revealing story in clear, unambiguous, and highly evocative language. A singularly memorable and compelling "tell-all" book, ESPN: The Uncensored History is strongly recommended reading for all sports buffs.
