Book Description
This book examines the advantages and disadvantages of Korean immigrant entrepreneurs in the mainstream labor market. Immigrants to the U.S. have historically pursued entrepreneurship as a means of achieving economic affluence. Among immigrants since the 1965 Immigration Amendment Act, Koreans have one of the highest rates of entrepreneurship.
This study investigates various structural elements, including enclave and non-enclave economies, to uncover interconnections with personal advantages such as capacities for resource mobilization through networks and human capital utilized to establish businesses. The results show that networks are the most prominent resources that Korean immigrants use for business establishment. However, networks are divided into two elements: family and social. The examination of both types of networks shows how they operate differently and generate different intrinsic to business establishment.
Although previous studies have recognized the economic advantages of immigrants with higher educational backgrounds, this study further demonstrates how higher human capital is utilized through network establishment to benefit business establishment. Also, counter to traditional belief, it is found that ethnic resources are not especially crucial resources for starting a business, but are useful after businesses are established.

In the Middle.......2000-05-18
Jin-Kyung Yoo has done a resourceful job in documenting why a rather new immigrant group chooses entrepreneurship in the competition-oriented economic system currently dominating the United States. This study concentrates on the growth of the Korean community in Atlanta, but refers to other large cities where Koreans have congregated longer. Contrary to free market ideology and its promotion of the image of the self-reliant, hardworking individual entrepreneur, this book shows, using several statistical tables, how establishing and expanding Korean businesses is due rather to ethnic and network resources that support entrepreneurial activity. Korean businesses are divided into enclave and non-enclave sectors, the former serving primarily Korean-Americans and the latter located primarily in inner city African-American neighborhoods. Korean immigrants launch these activities relying heavily on Korean network resources, both family and social. Included amongst these resources are startup capital, business information, price discounts, interest-free loans, cheap Korean labor, unpaid family labor, cultural identity, rotating credit associations (RCAs) to supply finance, and a policy of selling businesses only to other Koreans. Numerous statistics show that networks are the most prominent source of resources for immigrant entrepreneurial pursuits. The book also discusses the main theories developed to explain why so many immigrants become entrepreneurs. Marxist dependency theory, which states that the demand for cheap labor attracts poor peasants to rich industrialized countries, is in this case wrong. More than half of Korean immigrants have college education, meaning other factors cause them to become Americans. Orthodox cultural theory in turn argues that certain cultures have a built-in cultural predisposition for entrepreneur values and ambitions. This theory posits both class and ethnic resources. The former includes the values, skills and money of the business class that are passed along through the generations. The latter includes business resources distributed amongst all socio-economic levels of a particular ethnic group, giving that group a reputation of having commercial mentality. Reactive cultural theory explains immigrant entrepreneurial activity as a matter of exclusion rather than exclusiveness. Ie, immigrants are disadvantaged by factors like discrimination and the lack of linguistic or transferrable work skills, and instead of working poorly paid jobs take to more profitable business activities. Similarly, structural advantage theory argues that poor mainstream opportunities force immigrants to occupy a gap in the economy. They become "middleman minorities" between the producing corporate sector and low-income consumer neighborhoods. Network theories show how ethnic networking encourages and increases immigration and generates business resources for immigrants. Relying on networks, some immigrants, including a majority of Koreans after the 1980s, come simply to make money. None of these theories concerns only Korean immigrants, but any ethnic group extensively involved in business. J-K Yoo's accomplishment is to show how all these factors, not just one, are involved in making the Korean community as notably entrepreneurial as it is. Unlike previous researchers, she also differentiates family and social networks, the former providing startup capital and the latter providing valuable business information. Business expansion, as opposed to startup, she shows to be financed by heavy reliance on Korean/Asian RCAs. Korean enclave businesses provide a necessary function for the Korean-American community, and add richness to the American cultural context. Entrepreneurial activity in the non-enclave economy, however, is in disharmony with the African-American community, as money that could be used for development is soaked up and taken out, a loss not made up for by employing blacks. The mainstream economy and immigration policy are in turn in disharmony with Koreans, to some extent forcing them to work in harsher settings where hostility is higher and profits lower. It is almost as if Koreans are being made pawns in a game between corporations and low-income African-Americans. As a middleman minority, non-enclave Korean entrepreneurs sell products manufactured by corporations if not other ethnic groups. Being faceless, corporations are harder to attack. Koreans have a face, however, and bear the brunt of anger when inner cities explode. Were it not in part for Korean immigrant entrepreneurs, black Americans could own the businesses in their own communities, allowing these communities to grow faster and more independently of both corporations and government. Were it not for corporations and government, black communities could go even farther. Though the profit motive is a factor, bad immigration and post-immigration policy and economic practice have allowed this situation to develop. It is a mess that is ultimately of neither Korean nor African-American doing, but equally one that demands resolution. A good book that summarizes key theoretical issues and takes discriminating steps forward in the subject of ethnic economics. It needs a little editing, but is a good primer and includes an extensive bibliography. What is also needed, as the author states, is comparison with the economic activities of other ethnic groups. The Korean-American community is quite small and rather new compared to some other ethnic groups who may act along network lines, and operates almost entirely on the small business level in the marginal, not mainstream, economy.

Book Description
The average American college student owes about $17,000 in loans after graduation. Quadruple that amount for the average grad school graduate. An estimated seven million Americans have accumulated nearly $81 billion in student loan debt over the past 30 years. Not all of these borrowers are fresh out of college; many are in their late 20s, 30s, and even 40s. Indeed, the amount of student loan debt facing Americans is pervasive, if not problematic.
Fortunately, a number of creative ways exist to pay off this financial burden that, for many, goes on for years and years. In Free Yourself from Student Loan Debt, business writer Brian O'Connell outlines the best ways to do just that-as quickly and painlessly as possible. He guides readers through often over-looked but perfectly legitimate loan management techniques, including how to:
* ""Consolidate"" loans for easier (and lower) payments.
* Defer loans with no penalty.
* Take a ""break"" from student loans through a mechanism called forbearance.
* Get out of default status by making as few as six minimum payments.
* Fix problems that result when a loan isn't paid, with no lasting impact on credit or finances.
* Convince financial institutions to ""forgive"" loans.
* Fight the government and financial institutions that claim student loan debts weren't paid years after they were.
With wit and wisdom, O'Connell backs up his guidance with case histories, anecdotes, information boxes, sidebars, and colorful industry profiles-all packaged together in one lively, user-friendly book. As a bonus, he offers 50 surefire tips to eliminating student loan debt.

Every family needs this book.......2006-06-29
This is one of those marvelous books that schools should send home with kids so parents have a fighting chance to get their kids into a good school AND afford to keep them there. Easy to follow advice is there on every page. I recommend this to any family who has a kid coming of college age.
For the Green with the Green only.......2004-06-10
If you are unfamiliar with student loans and are not finance savvy then this book will help you. If you already have a student loan and know your way around this book doesn't have anything to offer. In one section it teaches you how to create a budget. That's fine for a kid fresh out of school but I am having trouble with an old student loan and this book had even LESS information than the student loan website !!!
Here is good advice... if your having trouble with your loan - call them they will help you, but dont waste the money for this book.

101 Ways to Promote Your Web Site: Filled with Proven Internet Marketing Tips, Tools, Techniques, and Resources to Increase Your Web Site Traffic (101 Ways series)
ASIN: 1930082002 |
Amazon.com
Operators of small business have always been attracted to the Internet's seemingly bottomless supply of ready customers, but their hopes can quickly be dashed by the competitive realities of business on the Web. Poor Richard's Internet Marketing and Promotions aims to take the entrepreneur by the hand and show him or her how to draw attention to an Internet resource without spending a lot of money.
What the authors present is a sort of guerrilla model for online business in which you use your apparent weaknesses to your advantage. You might, for example, exploit your woefully low traffic level by delivering an extraordinary level of attention to the customers you do have. The idea is that good news spreads, and the publishers of Web resources should provide lots of good things for their visitors to pass along. You can also go outside your customer base to attract visitors without buying banner ads--you can join a professional association or a Web ring, for example.
In addition to their particular brand of marketing advice, authors Peter Kent (who also wrote the excellent Poor Richard's Web Site) and Tara Calishain do a fine job of explaining more pedestrian technical subjects, such as how to prepare your pages for listing on search engines. --David Wall
Topics covered: Audience identification, basic page design and coding, registering with search engines, creating newsletters and other mailing lists, joining affiliate programs, filing press releases, and tracking reactions.
Book Description
Here is commonsense advice on how to market and promote on the Internet. This book contains methods for getting the word out in cyberspace using electronic press releases, discussion groups, electronic newsletters, product giveaways, opt-in E-mail, and more. It explains sales techniques such as the puppy-dog close, 100 percent guarantees, and selling benefits rather than products. Unlike other books on this topic, this is a down-to-earth explanation of how to market on the Internet from an author with extensive Internet marketing experience.
Customer Reviews:
Even an Mouse Can Now Master Internet Promotion.......2004-05-18
A few weeks ago, I ordered a book from Poor Richard's Web site. I was familiar with Peter Kent's email marketing newsletter. I had perused his website extensively. I was aware that he was one hell of an internet marketer, but I was not fully prepared for the extent of his marketing know- how until I read "Poor Richard's Internet Marketing and Promotions".
The second book in the widely praised "Poor Richard's" series that began with "Poor Richard's Web Site" published by Top Floor Publishing. Kent has earned rave reviews from Amazon.com to Fortune.com to USA Today to Windows magazine for his outstanding knowledge of internet marketing and design.
This book is invaluable to any and every internet marketer. It covers everything from using low-cost press releases to reach hundreds of journalists to giving away products at other peoples' Web sites to preparing your Web site for successful search-engine registration to using associate programs to multiply your sales presence on the Internet to using awards to bring people to your site to buying advertising without breaking the bank to using newsletters your own and other people's to promote your website.
Every page in this book is a goldmine, with internet links and fantastic advice on how to not waste your valuable time online, earn a decent income with online sales tools, and how to do it all on a budget!
To top it off, some of the advice is also available for off- line use as well as he uses simple and effective marketing promotion techniques.
This book is my new personal internet marketing bible, and I'd strongly suggest you make it yours as well!
A decent book on marketing and promotion........2001-06-18
I found this book to be best for covering the basics of marketing and promotion on the internet. However, as is the problem with many internet books, the links and e-mail addresses offered in the book are out of date and don't work. Despite this problem, the book is very helpful and full of good information.
Erroneous and Misleading Information.......2001-06-03
We had high aspirations and scrupulously read this book looking for guidance, all to no avail. This book contains incorrect and misleading information. We tried the various links for additional data many of which were no longer on the web. Others that we contacted via e-mail the response was not what was designated in the book. Peter and Tara provide their e-mail addresses, but they neither respond nor answer questions. The only conclusion that one can draw is that they crank out the books just to sell them and make a quick dollar. They don't really intend to be there for the consumer. This book was a total waste of money. The only thing that it is good for is the garbage or fireplace.

Book Description
This book takes on one of the great questions of the day: Why are some countries enormously rich and others so heartbreakingly poor?
Henry J. Bruton organizes the discussion around three basic ideas. The first is that well-being reflects not only the availability and distribution of goods and services, but also employment, values, institutions, and quality of preferences. The second is that ignorance is ubiquitous; hence growth of well-being depends primarily on commitments to searching and learning. The extent of such commitments is embedded in deep-seated characteristics of the society, its history, and the degree to which it can look ahead. The third is that economic policy-making is largely a matter of muddling through; furthermore, the idea that an economy can be assumed to be in a general equilibrium and can therefore be left to itself must be rejected. The author explores these ideas and their implications for the processes of growth and for policies to facilitate that growth.
The book breaks new ground in its emphasis on ignorance and learning and its generalized definition of well-being. Drawing from contemporary work in evolutionary economics, the economics of technological change, analytical economic history, and the new political economy, this work should be of interest to historians, sociologists, and students of technology, as well as economists. While directly concerned with development, it has implications for labor, trade, economic history, and industrial organization.
Henry J. Bruton is Professor of Economics, Williams College.

Description:
Psychological research has repeatedly demonstrated two seemingly irreconcilable human tendencies. People are motivated towards internal consistency, or acting in accordance with stable, self-generated preferences. Simultaneously though, people demonstrate considerable variation in the content of their preferences, often induced by subtle external influences. The current studies test the hypothesis that decision makers resolve this tension by sustaining illusions of preference consistency, which, in turn, confer psychological benefits. Two year-long longitudinal studies were conducted with graduating students seeking full-time employment. Results show that job seekers perceived themselves to have manifested greater preference consistency than actually exhibited in expressed preferences. Additionally, those harboring illusions of preference consistency experienced less negative affect throughout the decision process, greater outcome satisfaction, and subsequently, received more job offers.
