Book Description

Drawing on extensive new research through dozens of interviews with entrepreneurial champions in diverse sectors, Creating Regional Wealth in the Global Innovation Economy pinpoints the key reasons why some locations succeed in the quest to become centers of technology and innovation - and sustain their competitive advantages over time - while others fail. It answers the central questions about the world's entrepreneurial hotspots: What makes these locations special? How can local business and government organizations most effectively promote local entrepreneurship? And what can budding centers of entrepreneurship do in order to enter the game?

4 out of 5 stars A global snapshot.......2003-05-07

For people who want to get an overview of global clusters, what they are, what they can do to a nation's innovation system and its economy, what they have in common and how they differ in these global regions.

It is easy reading and gives a good global perspective. It highlights the local traits and permits comparisons with other geographical clusters, although it does not go as indepth one may hope for further academic research. Given the interview based research style, however, it keeps it lively and is not as "dry" as many other academics books.

The book makes clear that Silicon Valley and Boston's Route 128 are no longer the only innovation clusters.

1 out of 5 stars OUTDATED!!!.......2003-04-04

This book may have been useful back when the sock pocket was a big celebrity. In today's marketplace, this book just doesn't add any significant value. I have respect for the authors since I have heard them speak in San Francisco. It's too bad the hype doesn't live up to my expectations. The Internet Economy of the late 90s deserves better.

1 out of 5 stars A so--so book not living up to the hype.......2003-02-13

When I first bought this book, I could not wait to read it. Unfortunately the book is more hype than anything else. At times I felt like I should spend a day in the library reading articles on microfiche and saved the money I spent.

It is sad since I have heard the authors in Paris many, many times and now I feel like I was cheated. It is a shame.

5 out of 5 stars An important work.......2002-10-31

I found this to be an important work given our increasingly global business environment. The international collaboration of the authors, coupled with the book's focus, provide an important basis upon which we can begin to understand how the international business environment operates today.

5 out of 5 stars Creating Regional Wealth in the Innovation Economy.......2002-09-24

Saperstein and Rouach have achieved a multi-layered analysis of the new global economy, focusing on countries whose institutions recognize and invest in human intellectual resources and foster a synergy of government, commerce and education.
As well as examining economic giants, this book provides a fascinating account of how small countries like Sweden, Ireland and Israel have prospered by finding unique niches in the world marketplace, rather than attempting to replicate American models. Instead of providing a one-way channel for a continuation of the "brain-drain," these countries have adapted to the new economic paradigm by better protecting and keeping more of their most precious assets, the wealth of their best and brightest.
Saperstein and Rouach have also produced a highly readable text, mixing history with narrative, case studies and interviews that capture both the long view of economic evolution and the people and companies that have place their stamps on the new economy.
Lastly, this book provides the optimistic theme that economic reform and investment in humuman resources provides the surest path to both individual dignity and a stable political and social climate.

    Book Description

The most striking feature of Wutong, the preeminent God of Wealth in late imperial China, was the deity's diabolical character. Wutong was perceived not as a heroic figure or paragon but rather as an embodiment of greed and lust, a maleficent demon who preyed on the weak and vulnerable. In The Sinister Way, Richard von Glahn examines the emergence and evolution of the Wutong cult within the larger framework of the historical development of Chinese popular or vernacular religion--as opposed to institutional religions such as Buddhism or Daoism. Von Glahn's study, spanning three millennia, gives due recognition to the morally ambivalent and demonic aspects of divine power within the common Chinese religious culture.
Surveying Chinese religion from 1000 BCE to the beginning of the twentieth century, The Sinister Way views the Wutong cult as by no means an aberration. In Von Glahn's work we see how, from earliest times, the Chinese imagined an enchanted world populated by fiendish fairies and goblins, ancient stones and trees that spring suddenly to life, ghosts of the unshriven dead, and the blood-eating spirits of the mountains and forests. From earliest times, too, we find in Chinese religious culture an abiding tension between two fundamental orientations: on one hand, belief in the power of sacrifice and exorcism to win blessings and avert calamity through direct appeal to a multitude of gods; on the other, faith in an all-encompassing moral equilibrium inhering in the cosmos.

Mr. Siljander's well written primer on loss control and business security combines just the right mix of insurance and non-insurance methods of dealing with risk for today's businesses. The concepts presented are done so in a manner which enables non-insurance professionals to easily grasp the concepts of loss control and insurance. You will be hard pressed to find another book in this field which combines the author's police and insurance/loss control experience.

      Book Description

With half of all new businesses failing in the first two years, every aspect of good business planning must be considered, but loss prevention is very often overlooked. Most small business owners grapple with the day to day challenges of sales and marketing, never realizing that the shadow of shrinkage is expanding daily, waiting to reveal itself in the annual inventory results. Ravaged by theft and paperwork losses, the already tight profit margin can shrink into oblivion. Loss Prevention and the Small Business opens the eyes of the reader to the reality of shrinkage in all its guises including shoplifting, fraud, and embezzlement. Armed with this awareness, the security specialist or owner/manager can utilize the many strategies to both inhibit losses and aggressively pursue those persons and processes that cause losses.

This is a comprehensive guide to developing and maintaining a loss prevention strategy. It assists the reader in creating a dynamic proactive plan for protecting their hard-earned profits from the menace of internal and external loss.

Includes information beyond the typical retail theft by employees and customers
Cover business losses from administrative errors to white collar crime
Practical with numerous worksheets, forms, and templates for asset protection exercises

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Every security professional read this book!.......2000-03-12

I read this book after reading a review in Security Management Magazine, February edition...the reviewer stated 'Any security professional would benefit from this concise, thoughtful, and well-written text. It is an important tool for retail security professionals aiming to become self-reliant.' - Security Management. The reviewer also called the author an "enlightened iconoclast"...wow, was he right on the money. No hyperbole in this book, just straight to the heart and mind facts, new ideas, and an eye-opener for all of us in the field. The author's recommendations of putting to rest the old shrinkage accounting methods in lieu of a "shrinkage before net profit" strategy should be adopted by every serious loss prevention executive who is tired of obscuring the impact of theft and losses.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for the Small Business.......1999-12-17

As the former national director of loss prevention for one of the largest Top 100 retailers in the U.S. (currently instructing at Mercyhurst College), not only do I recommend this book to the small business owner but also to every large corporation that struggles with ineffective programs. The author has presented here insights into accounting, operations, and loss prevention that are rarely seen--a no-nonsense, truthful and dynamic review of LP programs, definitely not another do-it-yourself book full of platitudes and traditional thinking. After 30 years in law enforcement and as a corporate executive, this book is one of few to make seriously rethink the loss prevention process. For the small business owner or consultant new to the field, it is written eloquently yet simply; for the established practitioner, it is written to challenge the old and often ineffective strategies of behemoth corporations.

          Book Description

It's no secret that most small retail businesses don't have the budgets to take elaborate and expensive security measures against break-ins, robberies, shoplifting, employee theft, and civil unrest. Criminals know it as well as you do—and they know how to take advantage of weaknesses you may not even notice until it's too late. But there are many inexpensive steps you can take to tighten in-store security; reduce the risk of harm to yourself, your customers, and your employees; improve your store's physical security; detect fraud and theft, and generally make it tougher for criminals to take advantage of you.

In this invaluable guide, retail security expert Rudolph Kimiecik examines a broad range of external and internal security problems and prescribes affordable, sustainable solutions that will make a real difference in the safety, security, and profitability of your business. From procedures for opening and closing your store, making bank deposits, and dealing with emergencies, to selecting alarm and lock systems, key control, and deterrent lighting, Kimiecik helps you pinpoint the areas in which you are most vulnerable and shore them up with a judicious mixture of common sense, procedural control, and reasonable expenditure.

Copious illustrations and figures help you familiarize yourself with security hardware, and unbiased evaluations make it easier to select the products that are right for your business. End-of-chapter checklists and sample forms enable you to organize your approach to each security issue. Kimiecik also provides helpful guidelines on how to spot, detain, interview, and arrest suspected shoplifters; evaluate checks and credit cards; identify counterfeit currency; thwart con artists; and detect fraud of every stripe. An important section on armed robbery shows you steps you can take to minimize your risk of robbery, how to behave while a robbery is in progress, and what to do once the robber has fled. A similar section covers burglaries. An entire chapter on internal loss prevention provides valuable tips on hiring trustworthy employees, preventing and detecting employee theft, and training staff members to be part of your security effort.

Written in a clear, jargon-free style and organized for easy reference, Loss Prevention Guide for Retail Businesses speaks directly to you, the small business owner or manager, in language you understand. It shows you how to identify and take direct control of your store's security problems and keep your business safe, secure, and profitable.

"I can't afford a corporate security staff! What can I do to protect my business?"

If you've ever heard yourself saying these words . . . if you just can't afford all the full-blown protective services that alarm companies, locksmiths, and security guard agencies have to offer . . . if you're worried that shoplifters, con artists, burglars, and dishonest employees know more about in-store security than you do, you need this book.

Retail security expert Rudolph C. Kimiecik gives you clear, unbiased, extremely practical advice on the entire spectrum of retail security issues: personal safety, physical security, and internal and external loss. He shows you how to identify your vulnerabilities, implement procedures to reduce risk, detect theft and fraud, and make your business a less attractive target for criminals.

Unbiased evaluations of security hardware help you select the products that are right for your business

From the supplier: Small businesses suffer losses from theft, pilferage and shrinkage. To avoid these losses, these firms can take certain precautions. Shoplifting can be discouraged in stores if the facilities are designed to allow for maximum monitoring of people who come in the stores. Closed-circuit television systems can be used to identify thieves while access-control systems can be installed to prevent unwanted visitors from gaining access. Bad checks and forgeries can be minimized if small businesses request for identification from customers. Counterfeit bills can be avoided if the staff is trained how to identify them.

5 out of 5 stars For People Who Want to Be In the Know.......2003-05-23

This is a great resource book. Creditors do not harrass me anymore. I really feel empowered after reading this. No I can not earse my credit, but if I had read this book before messing up my credit, I would have been a lot better off.

5 out of 5 stars Sassy and very helpful.......2003-03-16

I was very happy to happen upon this book while searching the Amaozon site. I've found the tone fun and sassy...which is just what you need when approaching the all too "depressing" subject of credit. Her description of the Fair Issac credit scoring system was very helpful. Following the book's instructions I have successfully removed a negative item from my credit report. If you're looking for a comprehensive book on credit I would recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent consumer information.......2001-10-18

Good Credit is Sexy is worth its price alone for the information it provides on protecting personal privacy. It tells where to write to stop the junk mail that arrives in the mailbox on a daily basis and how to stop unwanted sales calls from interrupting the peace and quiet of evenings at home. Book Description

The rise of Cummins Engine Company from a tiny Indiana machine shop to one of the world's leading producers of diesel engines is a story rich with lessons for today's managers. By responding to challenges familiar to all American manufacturers with a tough competitive stance and a uniquely people-centered philosophy, Cummins has carved out a distinctive position in the international industrial landscape. From its early days with charismatic founder Clessie Cummins to its continued proud independence in an age of hostile takeovers, Cummins has done business with confidence and creativity. This vivid book depicts the tough choices--often with enormous consequences--that must be made by successful managers.

                3 out of 5 stars Incomplete.......2006-03-03

Book itself is very informative, however there is a problem with representation of it being passed off as "new". First copy came without a dust jacket, hard cover had corner bumps and scuffs. Replacement copy came the exact same way, in the same condition and without the DJ. Cost of book is $50.00 NEW, had we wanted the book in used condition without the original DJ, we would have ordered it as such. The minimal refund Amazon offered was not to our satisfaction and the reps and/or management are too busy to make personal contact with their business customers. There appears to be an internal problem with receiving/quality inspection of their supplier's goods.

5 out of 5 stars Well written, interesting book.......1998-07-08

Yes, I have also read Diesel's Engine by Lyle Cummins, the youngest son of Clessie Cummins, the co-founder of Cummins Engine. If, in reading DE, I am a proven crazy person, then I am, so discount what I say next. If one is fascinated by diesel engines, then this is a "must read." I have not completed the book yet, but having read 300 or so pages and I must say there is much beyond the engines. If you are a Harvard Business Review type, this will have much for you about entrepreneurism, the family business, enterprise capitalization, growth, corporate strategy, the inventor and his role in a technology driven business, timliness, single business small town employers, transportation trends, product quality, employee relations and more. I like reading about successes, but feel like this book portrays an almost charmed life of something impossible to duplicate. If every corporation were as successful as Cummins is portrayed, then we would reach corporate nirvana. Can what has been written here be true? Buy the book, write your own review, and we'll see what you think.
