The idea of stress contributing to poor health is an old one, but often patients are simply told to "relax"--and it's even rarer that researchers take the time to carefully study how relaxation can improve physical conditions. Tackling both these issues, Dr. Richard Surwit combines specific relaxation techniques with a solid research background in an effort to help control blood sugar levels. The first few chapters are rather technical but are explained in an approachable manner. He identifies several chemicals such as cortisol and growth hormone that are related to blood sugar management and discusses how depression, hostility, and anxiety can affect these chemicals. He refers to specific research, both with mice and with humans, and includes simple tests to help you analyze these problems and develop a combination of techniques to combat them. Later chapters explain these techniques in detail, particularly progressive relaxation therapy (similar to biofeedback, but without the machine) and cognitive behavior therapy. Each routine is broken down into simple daily steps, and pages can be used as workbook sheets --much of the daily effort involved is simply tracking your progress. While nowhere does Dr. Surwit suggest these as a total replacement for diet control and insulin treatments, the specific steps aren't difficult to add to your daily routine and may make just the difference you've been hoping for. --Jill Lightner

    Book Description

Diabetes is quickly becoming one of the world’s most serious health epidemics, and researchers are continually searching for new ways to manage the condition beyond the traditional realms of diet, exercise, and medication. Now, Dr. Richard S. Surwit, a leader in the field of the psychology of diabetes, adds the vital fourth component to treating diabetes: a revolutionary mind-body program that lowers blood sugar levels and dramatically reduces diabetes’ serious and damaging side effects.

In The Mind-Body Diabetes Revolution, Dr. Surwit reveals how stress, depression, and anger affect blood sugar levels and offers a step-by-step six-week program—based on twenty years of study—to help the millions of people with diabetes effectively manage their condition. He clearly explains how our moods and emotions can translate into chronic anger, anxiety, and depression—all of which increase blood sugar levels. He provides compelling case studies and a powerfully effective six-week program designed to teach patients how to manage emotions and stress, as well as self-tests and reflective quizzes to help patients determine the best and easiest psychological techniques to help keep blood sugar levels down. By bringing the powers of mind and body together, this is a powerful—and unprecedented—tool for effective diabetes control.

    5 out of 5 stars Stress counts.......2007-07-04

After reading this book, I got a small book to keep track of my moods and my blood sugar, then started developing ways to avoid stress and strong emotions (the bad ones, that is). It is a cure-all, but it does help, which is all I can ask of any program. It has also put me in a much better mood. You don't have to be a diabetic to appreciate this book.

There is no way that this book could be deemed jam-packed. In fact, most of the pages are only half-filled. Each two-page "chapter" is based around a quote that is very loosely tied to a topic that may or may not have anything to do with busniess. If you want to get something out of your time and money, look for books by Seth Godin, Barbara Corcoran, and Tom Peters. They really entertain as well as inform their readers.

                      Book Description

Managerial Communication: Strategies and Applications focuses on skills and strategies that managers need in today’s workplace. The first edition of Managerial Communication stood out in the field for its strategic approach, solid research base, comprehensive range of topics, its even-handed examination of oral and written channels, and its focus on managerial (as opposed to entry-level) competencies. The overriding principle for the revision was to preserve the book’s key strengths while bringing it in line with the early twenty-first century workplace. The chapters have been streamlined and condensed to meet the needs of a busy contemporary manager and content was added to reflect current business practices. In short, the second edition preserves the best features of the first edition, while bringing them up to date and presenting them in a concise, easy to read format. Today's managers will learn the skills and strategies necessary for successful and effective business communication.

1 out of 5 stars Cram 101 is NOT the text and is a total scam.......2007-02-03

Don't waste your money buying this so-called study guide. The vocabulary lists barley match the key words from the text book and the definitions are wrong. For example, for the key word "receiver," it says it is someone involved in a monetary transaction. This is a text on managerial communication-- not finance. The "receiver" is the person who is listening to the message being communicated. The definitions are out of context and probably computer generated. There are plenty of examples like this. I was so frustrated, I threw mine away. You are better off taking your own notes.

Also, I know that it says in the fine print that it is not the textbook, but I think that should be made even more obvious in the title. It is misleading.

                      5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2005-10-01

I am using this textbook for a class. I had already started the class when I ordered the book, but I received my book in enough time where I was not left behind. I appreciate the prompt service. Thanks:-)

1 out of 5 stars you don't get what you pay for.......2002-09-14

I'm just an ordinary college student, forced to buy this over-priced book for a course I am taking. The content of this text book may be great but for the [$$$] price tag, I think I should get more. How about review questions at the end of each chapter? How hard would that have been? Could you maybe have bothered to highlight key terms?

                            Book Description

The Economics of Business Strategy is an authoritative collection of the most important published articles on the economic basis of business strategy. John Kay, who himself has made seminal contributions to the field, has selected articles that illustrate the origins of familiar concepts in business strategy - the experience curve, the portfolio matrix, the `five forces' - while also presenting the foundations of the modern resource-based theory of strategy.

The volume will be of particular interest to economists who wish to learn how the subject has been used in business and to people working in business who wish to learn of the economic basis of the concepts used.

You've looked at dozens of books that promise to help you get a job. This book is different. This book is written by an executive whose business is teaching managers how to interview job candidates. He knows what they're looking for--and how you can successfully prepare for landing that job you really want.

Through interactive and easy-to-follow exercises, Landing the Job You Want equips you to make your next job interview one of the most positive experiences of your life. Whether you're a recent college grad searching for a first job, a corporate veteran looking for that big promotion, an at-home mom starting a new career, or an experienced worker looking to move in a totally new direction, you will walk into interviews prepared and confident because you know how to:
identify the skills most important for a job
decide whether a job is right for you
present your skills with maximum impact
                            respond to difficult questions
perform well in simulations and tests
                            handle an ill-prepared interviewer
close an interview on a positive note
                            critique your own interview performance

Each exercise in Landing the Job You Want is designed to help you look within yourself to identify your strengths and your weaknesses. You'll learn how to quickly develop a portfolio of skills that match your ideal job, and you'll understand exactly what your interviewer is looking for in a candidate. You'll be ready to dazzle your interviewer with both your qualifications and your preparation. The result? The interview of a lifetime--one that leads to the job you've always wanted.

1 out of 5 stars Blah, Blah, Blah.......2006-05-22

Is this the BEST that an 'Accomplished' journalist can do?

An accomplished journalist/author like Ms. Pickett should be able to do better than this bore of a 'Self-Help' book for the unemployed and unemployable. 'Landing the Job You Want' is nothing more than 200+ pages of 'Blah, Blah, Blah' (read: BORING) tips for those who are too lazy to get off their collective tushes and make something of themselves.

One would expect that a writer with Ms. Pickett's credentials should have the talent to at least speak intelligently to her audience, but then again, the author's M.O. is one of putting herself up on a pedastal, above all others, while boring her readers with lines and lines and pages upon pages of useless information that most could care less to read.

Other reviewers have concurred. Perhaps Ms. Pickett should spend more time concentrating on making her readers happy and less time feeding her own ego. A wise man once said 'Before you speak, my child, think about this: Does what you have to say really interest anyone other than yourself? If so, then speak your mind. If not, remain silent and more people will respect you.'
                            Ms. Picket should take heed.

I would highly recommend this book for job interviewing preparation. Also recommended for job interview preparation are the job interview guides published by Vault.com, including the Vault Guide to the Case Interview and the Vault Guide to Finance Interviews. Good luck!

This book was Fantastic! It gave me great examples, and allowed me to practice with real work oriented questions. This allowed me to prepare the upcoming promotional opportunity within my company. I feel that I am now relaxed and fully prepared to do the best that I can. I have and would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in seriously getting promoted. It will work, you just have to do the work and read the book. It's that Easy.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I would have had this book about 10 years ago!.......2005-01-16

I'm a graduate student, and I got "Financial Basics" as a resource for a project I did last quarter. My project centered around measuring college students' financial awareness and proactiveness.

Book was an easy, non-threatening read. I started and finished "Financial Basics" during a 2.5 hour plane ride.

Great thing about the book is that you don't necessarily have to be a student (or former student) to benefit from the advice Knox presents. Everyone interviewed for the book had differing financial situations and education--from the financially clueless to the overly stingy and everywhere in between. Instead of trying to fit everyone into one black-and-white financial solution, she gave easy-to-follow, general tips on money management, credit card responsibility, and savings.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer for Students.......2004-12-16

I am a professional financial advisor and have had the opportunity to work with many clients in their 40's and beyond who haven't mastered the basics presented here by Knox. How I wish they had this book 20 years earlier to get them started on the right path - the time lost really hurts. The money management lessons are timeless, straightforward and essential for everyone, especially young adults striking out on their own. The writing is special - stories that help students relate (and make them want to keep reading). The lessons are doled out gently and casually, not more preaching. All-in-all, an excellent resource. I plan to give it to my clients' kids as they hit high school.

5 out of 5 stars Your Credit Rating Counts.......2004-09-20

I sent Financial Basics with my nephew to college. It's a very practical money-management guide for students that generously uses student stories to illustrate the author's points. Most impressive to me is the section that reminds students that their credit rating, good or bad, will follow them after college graduation. She provides contact information for credit rating companies so students can view their own credit history.

                            Book Description

"Bill Bowen's powerful insights into the principles and practices of institutional governance make his new book `must reading' for all board members." —H. B. Atwater, Jr. Chairman of the Board and CEO General Mills, Inc. "The `old boys' club' of the boardroom no longer works as companies and organizations re-engineer for the global challenge. Dr. Bowen's thoughtful and incisive analysis of issues and his prescriptions for good governance are must reading for all responsible board members." —W. Michael Blumenthal Former Secretary of the Treasury and Limited Partner, Lazard Freres & Co. "This thoughtful, lively, and well-written comparison of the many similarities and striking differences in the governance of not-for-profit and for-profit corporations is a unique resource from which both sectors will benefit.… This valuable book, and in particular its twenty `presumptive norms' to govern how boards function, will certainly establish a new and important agenda for management and directors." —Helene L. Kaplan Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom "Dr. Bowen brings to Inside the Boardroom unusual qualifications: a distinguished economist who has served as university president, foundation executive, and [as a member of] several for-profit and nonprofit boards of directors. From this varied experience he combines scholarship with corporate reality in ways which provide wisdom, insight, and guidance as to how boards should work and how in fact they do work, and what they can and cannot contribute to management. Best of all, he does so in a thoroughly readable way." —Nicholas Katzenbach, Partner Riker, Danzig, Scherer, Hyland and Perretti Former United States Attorney General Former Senior Vice President and General Counsel, IBM Corporation "This superb study rests on Bowen's extensive experience of both corporate and nonprofit boards and his personal qualities of lucidity, perceptiveness, intellectual acuity, and fair-mindedness. Readable, fresh, jargon-free, and thoughtful, the book is a gem." —Richard W. Lyman President Emeritus, The Rockefeller Foundation President Emeritus, Stanford University "William Bowen is the finest example of America's meritocracy. He rose, by ability and wisdom, from Main Street to the highest counsel of business and philanthropy while gaining along the way admiration for scholarly innovations as an economist and leadership as President of Princeton University. In this short book he addresses—from experience and with analytical precision—the vital problem of how outside directors might help improve governance of business corporations and non-profit institutions. Read. Ponder." —Paul A. Samuelson Nobel Laureate in Economics Department of Economics, M.I.T.

5 out of 5 stars An important discussion of directors' responsibilities........1999-03-14

Mr. Bowen gives an important perspective about the responsibilities and duties of members of boards of directors. He shows a deep understanding of the role of directors of both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. The not-for-profit director's importance is often overlooked, so this book is a welcome addition to the literature about boards of directors.
