    Book Description

Within a few months of assuming the position of curator of medieval coins at the American Numismatic Society in 1980, Alan M. Stahl was presented with a plastic bag containing a hoard of 5,000 recently discovered coins, most of which turned out to be from medieval Venice. The course of study of that hoard (and a later one containing more than 14,000 coins) led him to the Venetian archives, where he examined thousands of unpublished manuscripts. To provide an even more accurate account of how the Zecca mint operated in Venice in the thirteenth through fifteenth centuries, Stahl commissioned scientific analyses of the coins using a variety of modern techniques, uncovering information about their content and how they had been manufactured. The resulting book, Zecca: The Mint of Venice in the Middle Ages, is the first to examine the workings of a premodern mint using extensive research in original documents as well as detailed study of the coins themselves.

The first of the book's three sections traces the coinage of Venice from its origins in the ninth century as a minor, and unofficial, regional Italian coinage to its position at the dawn of the Renaissance as the dominant currency of Mediterranean trade. The second section, entitled "The Mint in the Life of Medieval Venice," illustrates the mechanisms of the control of bullion and the strategies for mint profit and explores the mint's role in Venetian trade and the emergence of a bureaucratized government. The third section, "Within the Mint," examines the physical operations that transformed raw bullion into coins and identifies the personnel of the mint, situating the holders of each position in the context of their social and professional backgrounds.

Illustrated with photos of Venetian coinage from the world's major collections, Zecca also includes a listing of all holders of offices related to the medieval Venetian mint and summaries of all major finds of medieval Venetian coins.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterful Work for Historians and Numismatists.......2006-12-30

Zecca is an impressively researched historical work focusing adeptly on its subject: the Venetian mint in the middle ages. The narrative is very readable and the presentation uses footnotes to annotate the voluminous amount of source material that went into the creation of this work. The book focuses first on the coinage itself, the medieval penny, the grosso, the ducat, and finally the soldino. Each era goes into great detail on the weights, the fineness, and the people making the decisions to have the coins made. The book then goes back and examines each of the roles of the mint employees in additional detail. From the mintmasters and engravers to the smiths and weighers the duties of each position are laid out. In addition salaries and legal documents help flesh out some of the actual persons and the work done at the mint.
The book left me with a thirst for more knowledge about Venice's history. There is little background in the book on some of the external reasons that caused some of the decisions presented in th work. I think this is definitely a must read for those people who have a strong interest in both history and numismatics. It is not so well suited for the casual reader who will undoubtedly get bored by the finer details of how many pennies are in a mark, and which minor noble filled the role of mintmaster. But if the reader is interested in medieval coinage, even if it is not Italian, than this work will provide a ton of insightful information on mint practices and medieval monetary policy.

5 out of 5 stars This is the BEST book for mothers who want to work at home!.......1999-04-10

I looked at them all, but no book addressed the issues of a mother working from home as well as Moneymaking Moms. I recently left a fulltime job to be home with my 2 children Ryan and Sydney, although we struggle somewhat financially I know we made the right decision. Moneymaking Moms helped me conclude that by taking their quiz "How much does your job cost?" It was a real eyeopener. The step by step manner and the realistic approach to handling a business and family is very helpful and the warm manner in which the authors approach the reader is much appreciated. This book is the "What to Expect if You're Expecting" book for owning a home business. You wouldn't want to be caught without it. Thank you Caroline Hull and Tanya Wallace, you will undoubtedly turn many moms into Moneymaking Moms.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable, practical, down-to-earth reference book.......1999-03-13

I like Moneymaking Moms because it took me step by step through what I found an intimidating process - deciding what to do, how to do it, etc. It also spoke to me as a "mom" - I'm working from home because I want to spend more time with my kids rather than less, and this is one of the few books I've found that actually talks about working from home in those terms. I also found the Marketing section invaluable. This is one area I have no experience in at all and I felt like the authors held my hand and walked me through the basics. I think this is an excellent book for moms who want to spend more time with their kids, but need an income in order to do that.

5 out of 5 stars A great resource for stay-at-home moms who need an income.......1998-10-18

I found this book incredibly helpful because it simplifies the process of going into business into logical steps that are easy to follow. I bought the book because I wanted to find a way to be home with my children, and I really appreciate the emphasis on combining mothering and business roles. I especially liked the way the authors incorporated real-life "moneymaking moms" and their individual experiences into the book because those personal stories helped to inspire and motivate me! Any mom who wants to make money at home will benefit from this practical book, and find another mom in its pages she can relate to.

                    5 out of 5 stars A perfect home-based business companion for moms.......1998-09-27

I bought a copy of Moneymaking Moms three weeks ago on the recommendation of a friend who really liked it. I can see why! I have worked through the first two phases of the book, completed the checklists, and my new business is now up and running! I had been thinking about starting my own business for ages but before reading Moneymaking Moms I hadn't had the courage to actually get started. This book is written in such a way that it gives you confidence to move forward. Now I feel that I have a blueprint for home-based business success and can find strategies in the book to help me cope with three young children and a business at home. I am so thrilled that I have finally been able to take the plunge, and grateful to the authors that they have given the rest of us a manual to work from.

5 out of 5 stars A reference book to be read over and over again.......1998-08-25

I found this book to be more useful than I had anticipated! I have been researching to start a home business in the near future, and I am real glad that I read this book first. It gave me better insight to pricing my products, it gave me some more tools for advertising on a budget, and many other ideas that either backed me up on my business assumptions or pushed me along with more ideas that I hadn't thought of yet. I have already folded the corners of certain pages that I know I will go back to over and over again as I begin and run my business. This will truly be used as a reference book in my home office!

                      Book Description

Why and how has the business corporation come to exert such a powerful influence on American society? The essays here take up this question, offering a fresh perspective on the ways in which the business corporation has assumed an enduring place in the modern capitalist economy, and how it has affected American society, culture and politics over the past two centuries. The authors challenge standard assumptions about the business corporation's emergence and performance in the United States over the past two centuries. Reviewing in depth the different theoretical and historiographical traditions that have treated the corporation, the volume seeks a new departure that can more fully explain this crucial institution of capitalism. Rejecting assertions that the corporation is dead, the essays show that in fact it has survived and even thrived down to the present in part because of the ways in which it has related to its social, political and cultural environmental. In doing so, the book breaks with older explanations ground in technology and economics, and treats the corporation for the first time as a fully social institution. Drawing on a variety of social theories and approaches, the essays help to point the way toward future studies of this powerful and enduring institution, offering a new periodization and a new set of question for scholars to explore. The range of essays engages the legal and political position of the corporation, the ways in which the corporation has been shaped by and shaped American culture, the controversies over corporate regulation and corporate power, and the efforts of minority and disadvantaged groups to gain access to the resources and opportunities that corporations control.

                            Book Description

European countries have recently been involved in an extremely broad set of regulatory changes to introduce competitive markets into the area of telecommunications. New policies to develop the information society in Europe are also emerging, taking into account the changes in regulations. The contributions included in this book examine several dimensions of these major European issues, including multi-level governance, the instruments used to produce these policy changes, and the European idiosyncrasies of globalization trends.

The authors debate the successes and failures of European strategies and policies engaged to foster the new IT-based economic revolution, and European multilevel policy-making is discussed from the perspective of linking telecommunications policy to the promotion of an information society in Europe. The main policy instruments used by the European Union to advocate this new information society are reviewed, and a retrospective analysis of the 1990s European telecommunications industry transformation from public monopoly to a competitive market is introduced.

This book will appeal to a wide-ranging audience, including academics in the fields of public policy, economics, political science, media and communication studies, and communications engineering. Consultants, analysts and public servants specializing in telecommunications policy and information technology issues, along with private and public telecom executives, will also find this book to be of importance.

                              Book Description

The Japanese economy is undergoing a significant systemic change. Economic globalization is usually considered to push Japan forward converging on international best-practice principles, often associated with Anglo-American institutional models. But economies must also distinguish themselves to stay competitive, and they move along historical paths with peculiar properties. The book discusses the challenges from theoretical, empirical and policy perspectives, with contributions from leading Japanese and western scholars.
