Learning to use statistics to work on problems in economics.......2004-08-27
This is a book about learning to use statistics to work on problems in economics. It focuses on regression and hypothesis testing rather than Bayesian methods, so make sure that is the kind of statistics you want to study (most everyone but the most advanced statisticians does).
After the intro, Part I gets into Data and Description - the kinds of data available, how to use them and what to look out for. It also introduces univariate, linear, bivariate statistics, and frequency distributions.
Part II provides three chapters on the specification and estimation of regression models. The chapters discuss theory and application.
Part III provides three very valuable chapters on probability distributions (if that is a topic you don't have down pat already). Part IV consists of three chapters on inference in regression. This is vital stuff if you want to understand what hypothesis testing is about.
Part V is four chapters on various topics in econometrics and Part VI is two chapters on topics in statistics.
The book also provides statistical tables, answers to selected problems (always valuable to the reader who wants to verify his or her comprehension of what has been read), a three and a half page bibliography for further reading and an index.
I found the book to be interesting, focused, and helpful. The writing is clear and does not let the complexity of the topic obscure understanding. However, if you are a general reader who wants to read this, it would be good to have a handle on math through at least calc 1. The book is not all that complex, however, you cannot just dash through it. You need to take your time and understand the material as it is presented, work through some of the problems to be sure you understand what has been presented. Once you have a good grasp on what you have just been presented you can move on. Just do not dash ahead because you will get lost and then blame the author and that would be unfair to both the reader and the author.
Solid text and I am glad to have it on my shelf. It is exactly what I had hoped it would be.
Horrible textbook..........2000-11-22
I'm an econ major and I'm taking Applied Econometrics this semester. My professor thinks that this book is great for his class, but that tells me one of two things: 1. there is a severe lack of "good" textbooks for applied econometrics classes, or 2. he hasn't done his homework. The worst part about this book is that there are no examples. It is mostly straight theory. The three or four examples I found in the book are long and detailed and are not of help when doing a problem set for class. I hope someone writes a better textbook because, as a struggling econ major, this book definitely did not make my learning experience any easier.
Good Introductory Text.......2000-06-18
The author does a good job of introducing basic econometrics with a touch of theory and some applications. OLS and basic regression tests are well covered and various other topics are covered on the surface. I'd say one needs only a little math or statistical background to read and understand the book since several chapters are dedicated to explaining these necessary concepts.
I'd say the text is at about the 2-3rd year level of an undergrad program.

Just like Wonderbread - Bland, stale, and full of sawdust........2005-03-06
As a soon to be full-time consultant, I was hoping that this book would provide me answers for the few remaining questions I have. Based on the other reviews, it appeared this book would fill in those gaps, though now that I have read it, I am sorely disappointed. The most annoying aspect of the book is that the author's primary aim seems to be to show off his grasp of the various fields within computer consulting and especially the terminology and jargon. Seriously, if I REALLY need to know what an ATM switch is, I can look it up in Newton's Telecomm Dictionary. Likewise, I do NOT need a primer on IBM mainframes and PC-DOS which haven't been relevant for over 20 years. I just want to know about "Getting Started" - like the title says. The sidebars are littered with these mostly useless definitions. In addition, the book seems to offer very detailed information in the table of contents, though once you read a specific section you realize the oasis is only a mirage. There's a heading called "Examining Your Strengths" which instructs one to do this without any suggestions on how to do this and how to interpret the results and choose a niche, yet choosing a niche is one of the main points of the book. Much of the information can be useful, yet an equal amount is either so simplistic or so vague I started yelling out loud at the book. Often the author will state things like "research indicates" without even citing the research. A lot of the marketing advice seems regurgitated from bad 1990's marketing books; clearly NOT the authors strong point. If you want to read a mind-blowing 1990's book on marketing a service business, read Harry Beckwith's Selling the Invisible. Finally, the book is very dated, being a computer-related book published in 2000. The annoying little sidebar definitions become more annoying with their staleness. I could hardly keep myself from smiling/groaning at the mention that Y2K consulting is still a growth niche.
Its good, but I bought it too soon........2003-06-27
I have to agree with another reviewer here. The book had more information than I new what to do with at this time, since I am just considering a career change into the computer field. I know I want to be a computer consultant, but I got a bit intimidated by all the info this book has. Which is good, in general, but I guess I should have purchased it a bit down the line when I am close to completing my training.
I took the advice of another reviewer here and bought "The Secret Path to Contract Programming Riches," because it is the only programming/consulting book I've found that was written for those in the absolute beginner, from a technical perspective.
I will keep this book and refer to it as I near completion of my training, so I can move into consulting as quickly as I can.
I would have given it 5 stars, but as I said, I am too new to this field and could not digest it all yet.
Good for an expereinced IT person, but not for me........2003-04-25
I've either skimmed or fully read many of the consulting books around. This one is like a mix between Janet Ruhl' two books: "Janet Ruhl's Answers for Computer Contractors: How to Get the Highest Rates and the Fairest Deals from Consulting Firms, Agencies, and Clients" and "The Computer Consultant's Guide."
It is useful for anyone considering consulting and how best to organize and handle their business, from many viewpoints.
Though for a beginner in the IT field, actually, I am still in school, it is good for an overview, but I won't be able use much of it yet. At least I can better prepare for my entry into the work force.
I read some other reviews here and they mentioned
"The Secret Path to Contract Programming Riches: An Expert Consultant's Step-by-Step Guide That Takes You from Having Little or No Computer Programming Experience, Virtually, Directly into High-Paid Contract Programming" being good for people just starting out in the IT field. Either way, I am going to read them all and I will review this book many times, because I want to be ready when I graduate and be a top notch consultant.
In conclusion: this was a very infomative read into the consulting field and it opened my eyes to many options I never new existed.
A good broad introduction.......2000-09-25
This book covers all the basics. It is a good "how to" on various levels, but also gives you the advantages and disadvantages of consulting - if you haven't made your mind up yet. But you may want to read other books for more in-depth coverage.
I haven't been contracting for 10 years, but have a stong desire to again do the work I like, for people I like, when I like - and get paid for it. Consulting is different to contracting of course, and Meyer discusses many of the new skills needed, for example setting up, marketing and pricing (he strongly recommends flat rate pricing for example) - and the very important listening skills. After reading the book, I have made my mind up. I am ready to chuck my permanent job.
THE most practical book I have ever read.......2000-09-19
I didn't buy this book through Amazon, but I loved it so much that I had to review it.
A very practical book that was written with lots of examples by a very experienced person. I found it extreemly useful in setting up my own database consulting business. it contains things such as:
How to price your time, how to choose your client, how to ensure that your client has confidence in you, pitfalls to avoid when building your business etc.
Excelent!

Book Description
Playing to Win is a handbook for women who want to be successful. Karren Brady did it. At 23 she took over as Managing Director of Birmingham City Football Club, becoming the youngest ever female Managing Director of a UK PLC when it floated in 1997. Although the club was the "football equivalent of a rubbish dump" and women were barely even seen on the terraces in the early 90s, Karren Brady persuaded her backers to acquire the club and single-mindedly revolutionised it, clearing the debt, taking Birmingham City into the Premier League and transforming it into a viable business.
How did she do it? How did a 23-year-old woman with little previous experience at this level of management walk into a mans world and achieve such success? In Playing to Win, she reveals her secrets and shares with other women the techniques they can adopt to succeed in their own lives, on their own terms. Her ten motivational rules are self-help classics: ambition, determination, courage, charm, hard work, attitude, humour, confidence, focus and communication. Playing to Win shows women how to grow in each of these areas and achieve the success they dream of. And like all great self-help, her principles apply across all areas of experience - work and personal life. Playing to Win is a handbook for success in any situation.
Moving from Karrens story, how she has transformed a business and maintained a full and stable personal life, to a chapter-by-chapter study of the ten principles successful women need to adopt, Playing to Win is essential reading for women who want to have it all.

Book Description
Career Paths in Psychology is a must-have resource for students contemplating a career in psychology, for psychologists considering switching between areas of psychology, and for professionals thinking of switching to psychology from another field. In this comprehensive anthology, authors selected for their distinction in their chosen careers offer their professional--and personal--perspectives on 19 different graduate-level careers in psychology. Few fields of study offer more career opportunities than does psychology, and readers will find thoughtful discussions, leavened with tips and insights gained from personal experience, on the full range, including (to name only a few) academia, clinical psychology, health and school psychology, clinical neuropsychology, and government service. Each chapter discusses the nature of the career, its advantages and disadvantages, how to prepare for it, typical activities, ranges of financial compensation, opportunities for employment, and the personal attributes needed for success in the career. "Day in the life" discussions give readers a glimpse into the prosaic realities, challenges, and rewards of each career that the lab or lecture hall rarely provides. Reprinted eight times since the publication of the first edition in 1997, Career Paths in Psychology is recognized as the "go-to" sourcebook for anyone seeking a candid portrait of different careers in this ever-changing field. The second edition has been expanded (discussions of five new careers added) and updated to reflect current trends and changes in the field.

Fast service .......2007-10-13
I was very happy with this book the sender sent this book within a day of notice and it was very well taaken care of.
an OK textbook.......2007-09-21
It's an OK text book. I know I would never buy a book like this for my own sake. However, since it's a PsyD program assigned textbook, I have to go through it. Get bored several times during the reading. It's alright informative; I did learn a little information after reading it. So i think it's alright.
Great for psych majors!.......2006-05-10
I definitely recommend this book for any undergraduate who is a psychology major and is planning a career in psychology. The authors of each article cover their fields rather extensively, outlining a day in the life, average/median salaries, the responsibilities and educational tracks to their jobs, and more information on related careers in the field. It has many traditional psychology careers (academia, counseling, clinical in a hospital) as well as non-traditional "different" subfields (community, health psych, i/o psych, government research).
However, I only recommend it if you already have an idea that you want to go into the field of psychology but are having trouble deciding on a subfield. The book is really for people who already have a sort of basis in psych and know that they are interested, but need more information. If you still think that all a psychologist does is "couch work," it's DEFINITELY for you.
Great Overview for Exploration.......2006-02-07
I read this book from the standpoint of a working person interested in getting into psychology. It gives a good overview of the different branches of psychology, and talks about days in the lives of psychologists, educational requirements, salaries, etc. Most of the jobs discussed require a PhD, so for me these jobs would be long term goals, but even so - reading this book was a good way to think about what branches of psychology appeal to me.
Great overview.......2005-02-22
This book is a great overview, useful for understanding some of the different paths one can take with a degree in psychology. It has a lot of "up close and personal" details with people who have been very successful in their particular fields. This book is excellent for anyone who is considering a major or career in psych as well as those who are about to graduate or have already done so, but may feel a bit overwhelmed as far as the next step. It was particularly useful to me in choosing what grad school program to pursue. It is has a lot more info and detail for academically related careers (as opposed to more socially oriented ones). If you read it and begin to see that this is not your leaning (as I did), try a book about careers in social work or as a counselor. Nevertheless, it was useful in revealing what I was not particularly interested in and pointing me toward my true interests - quite helpful!

My questions mostly answered!.......2003-09-01
I have been looking for a book that simply goes through the basics of money and financial planning without going over my head and I found it in this book. I think its great in that it just lays out what anyone should know about having and saving money and its easy to read. I would have liked a little more explanation at some parts or at least clearer cohesion within chapters, but it was manageable in any case. I think its also good for college students who might need to look ahead and start their planning. For me, this book lays the foundation and I will count on Suze Orman for the rest. :)
Better for Beginners.......2001-02-14
I was dissapointed with this book. It covered a lot of material, but seemed to skim many subjects and didn't provide very helpful suggestions. Ideas were mainly things like "avoid impulse purchases" and "look for discounts and sales." I suppose if you wanted a basic guide about budgeting and an introduction to different types of investments, this book would be good. But if you are looking for something more in-depth, then keep on looking!
