The Begining of Formal Economics.......2007-08-09
This is one of the classic books that every economist needs to read. The argumentation and formulation of Walras of the Economy as a Complete Interrelated System is one of the most important advances in Modern Economics, such important that today 135 years later we still studying this book. I strongly recommend to Graduate Students of Economics or to any Social Sciences Researcher to read this book

Book Description
The eight cassette in a series of lectures based on A COURSE IN MIRACLES, Marianne Williamson here discusses money and all its ramifications. In her lectures The Meaning of Money and Money Spiritualized, Marianne encourages us to change our thoughts about money, where it comes from and how it's used.
Poverty, or lack of anything, comes from a belief that we are less than what god made us. god's abundance is available to each of us, and by believing this we can change our attitudes toward money, our work in this world and ourselves.
Money is energy and energy is infinite in the universe. by doing what we love to do-and working for love and not for money- we will benefit in many ways, including monetarily. the key is to see money as a neutral entity, neither good nor bad, and find work we love to express God's goodness through our gifts. The money we receive from work can also be used to heal the world through the continuous flow it provides from ourselves to others and back again.
Marianne Williamson continues, to expand the growing international audience for her profound yet down-to-earth interpretations of
A COURSE IN MIRACLES, the revolutionary self-study program of spiritual psychotherapy.

Love this!.......2003-03-15
Marrianne Williamson's work is both real and honest. Rather than couch things in a concepts that are alien or extremely religious, she talks to you about the realities of existing. Of how things will not always be easy, about how you will lose your way, and honestly how to see people clearly. Growth is messy, it's not neat, maturity is not easy, nor is spirtiuality delicate work, but with assistance from a tape like this you can see yourself clearly and how to bridge yourself from concept to human to spiritual being.
Book Description
Great Consulting Challenges: And How to Surmount Them shows how consultants can use the wisdom gleaned from Weiss's own practice and from other seasoned members of the profession to help overcome persistent problems and next-level challenges. Weiss explains that as consultants' careers develop and become more sophisticated and complex, so do the challenges they encounter. For example, the question of price competition occurs at every level of the consulting business, yet the techniques for astutely resolving the issue can be vastly different for the veteran consultant as compared to the novice who is merely trying to establish a new business. In this book, Alan Weiss discusses the great consulting challenges in key areas such as marketing, selling, delivery, and practice management and offers practical advice for overcoming common problems and learning to thrive as a consultant.

Customer Reviews:
Could have been better.......2007-01-09
This book could have been much better. It was very vague in the information it gave. I thought the book would enhance the information I already had but it didn't. I was actually saying, they should have wrote this or that to go with this section.
I found better information on the internet for free!
A wonderful primer on starting a business with contact information for locating startup funds if necessary........2006-09-17
This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can't do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.
I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be "educated customers" ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.
My favorite chapters were:
1. Initial business concerns
2. Your business' structure
3. Business start-up details
5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
8. Obtaining the financing you need
The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don't treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn't. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.
I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.
Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.
I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can't complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.
When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 50 versions of this book sold; the only state I haven't found a copy for is Montana. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!

The Quick Internet guide to Career and Education Information.......2000-03-30
This is an excellent reference book for any recent graduate or anyone looking to find a new job or career in this technological age. The information shared is valuable and easy to locate. I'd recommned this along with Richard Bolles work on the same subject, although I found this to be more helpful and easier to use as a reference source.

Probably should be re-named 'The Widows Resource If You've Been Left With A Lot Of Money And Don't Know What To Do With It'....I was hoping to find information on how to handle the loss of ones major source of income without becoming a bag lady......this is definately not the book for that. A good book though if you actually have money to worry about.

Concise, easy to understand information, for people during the most vulnerable time of their lives. This book has been a tremendous resourse for me as I produce my documentary on the same subject.

Customer Reviews:
Easy to understand text explaining corporate culture........2003-04-03
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in understanding the culture and ethics that have lead to the numerous scandals the economy has been faced with as of late. If you are an investor or the board member of company, this text is worth reading. The investor benefits from a door being opened into companies that practice unethical financial practices and provides an investment warning. A board member, or anyone hiring an executive that has more interest in the long term viability of their company than the short term gains and rapid fallout associated with using accounting tricks to mislead the public will gain insight into the type of individual and practices that should be avoided at all cost. What these companies have done goes far beyond their employees and shareholders. It has shaken the whole economy.
The Best Book of This Kind.......2003-03-03
I think that every MBA student and practitioner should read this book not to repeat another accounting scandal and not to mess up our economy again.

Corporate Combat goes beyond the conventional 'business is war' metaphor to interweave actual business case studies and real military campaigns.
Customer Reviews:
Martial art for the workplace!.......2006-06-25
War is capitalism with the gloves off -- Tom Stoppard says...Learn the three lessons of war but first you must know1) Wars can occasionally be won because one side runs out o either financial resources or simply the will to carry on 2) there is always the simple matter of incompetence (that famous Peter Principle is REAL). The three main reasons some armies (and companies) are more successful are 1) Superior weapons and tactics 2) A high force: space ratio -- focus on one segment and then dominate it -- thus the high force: space ratio....3) Strong defensive position -- think ToysRUs or Walmart versus etoys (reviewer's example -- not in book). The book includes lots of great examples...because it is published in Europe lots are European but many are not ie Sega versus Nintendo etc -- good for the American business guy or gal to see what's happening in the rest of the world. Nicely done. Take a gander at the MS Dos and IBM increasing returns section if nothing else. Men and women will love this -- men because they usually love war stories and women because they are often the victim of them in the corporate world and with this they can see the competing armies coming over the hill in advance!
Insightful!.......2001-02-24
If The Art of War graces your shelf, this book is for you. Author Nick Skellon argues that you can apply military lessons to corporate strategy. His theories make for fascinating reading. For instance, he draws parallels between the pitched head-to-head combat of the American Civil War and Burger King's battles with McDonald's. Like the Persians harassing the larger Roman forces with raids in 359, Honda attacked Harley-Davidson in the United States in the 1960s by grabbing the clean-cut college kids that Harley avoided. Sure, Skellon stretches the analogy too far, and by the time he gets to case studies such as Wal-Mart, there's barely a hint of military jargon. Still, we at getAbstract.com recommend this intriguing look at corporate successes and failures to readers who realize that brilliant strategy is brilliant strategy, whether on the battlefield or in business.
Foundation - Background Readings.......2000-09-13
You can learn more on Lanchester Strategy and in particular the mathematical basis of the warfare strategy in businessn based on Lanchesters equations of combat in books by Shinichi Yano, Dr Taoka, Dr Onoda and F. W. Lanchester by searching these names on the Amazon book site...regards
Helping to see the wood from the trees!.......2000-02-20
What an excellent read...Skellon applies the amalgamation of centuries of hard won experience in the battle fields of the nations of the world to the board rooms and market places of some of the world's best known brands and businesses. It's excellence as a read is in the skilful way that Skellon reduces the hype surrounding the art of business warfare and demonstrates how it can distilled into simple but powerful winning formulas that can be applied to businesses of any size. Do not be mistaken..the simplicity of the logic is disarming but it is equally potent. If I had one gripe with this book it would be the lack of case studies regarding the successes and failures of medium sized enterprises and also the lack of comment from the people behind all the "corporate combat"
Original, innovative, challenging, profitable reading........2000-02-04
To win on the battlefield of business, Nick Skellon argues in Corporate Combat that organizations can do no better than to look to military history and the way that wars have been fought and won over the past 2500 years. Skellon interweaves actual business case studies and real military campaigns to demonstrate how centuries of military strategy can be used to build a modern-day competitive business strategy for the new millennium. Skellon draws on examples from companies as diverse as Wall-Mart, Nike, Nestle Buitoni, and Honda to illustrate how any business can compete with the giants, turn its competitors into followers, and thrive in any competitive market -- local, regional, national, or global. Corporate Combat is highly recommended reading for all corporate executives seeking to prosper their company in today's highly competitive, constantly changing business climate.

Book Description
President Franklin Roosevelt created the Export-Import Bank of the United States (Ex-Im Bank) in 1934 to promote US trade in the midst of the Great Depression. At the outset, the Ex-Im Bank was instructed to supplement, not compete with, private sources of export finance. Historically, the Ex-Im Bank filled gaps when the private sector was reluctant to finance exports to politically uncertain areas -- such as Latin America in the 1940s, Europe in the 1950s, and emerging markets more recently. Critics now ask whether -- in the current era of vast private capital markets -- significant financing gaps still exist that require government action. Put bluntly, should the Ex-Im Bank still be playing a role in financing US exports to emerging markets?
Since the 1970s, the Ex-Im Bank has faced a new challenge: helping US exporters meet the financial competition from foreign export credit agencies (ECAs) -- such as COFACE in France and the Export-Import Bank of Japan. The Ex-Im Bank has tried to cope with foreign ECAs in two different ways. One way is to negotiate common rules for export financing, under OECD auspices. The other is to match credit terms offered by foreign ECAs. A central question for the Ex-Im Bank in the 21st century is whether this dual strategy still provides a viable answer to an array of new forms of competition spawned by foreign ECAs.
The Institute for International Economics sponsored a conference in May 2000, both to honor the Bank's 65th anniversary and to look ahead at challenges facing the Ex-Im Bank. This volume-edited by former director of the Bank, Rita Rodriguez, and Institute Senior Fellow Gary Clyde Hufbauer-presents the papers from the conference. The papers both describe the Bank's current environment and identify new problems and opportunities in a global economy characterized by highly sophisticated private finance and intense competition for export markets. This volume provides an analytical basis for evaluating the Ex-Im Bank's future and suggests options that should be considered by the next president and Congress.

Description:
Using bank level data this paper examines how bank's specific characteristics and the overall banking environment affect the profitability of commercial domestic and foreign banks operating in the 15 EU countries over the period 1995-2001. The results indicate that profitability of both domestic and foreign banks is affected not only by bank's specific characteristics but also by financial market structure and macroeconomic conditions. All the variables, with the exception of concentration in the case of domestic banks profits, are significant although their impact and relation with profits is not always the same for domestic and foreign banks.
