This paper re-examines whether the huge external deficits in the United States for the last few decades are sustainable by using time series methods. Two distinct analytical differences from earlier works are considered. First, the private sector and government are separated to construct the current account identities used in this paper. Second, both the necessary and sufficient conditions for the sustainability of external deficits are explicitly considered. Taking these modifications into consideration, the empirical results of this study do not necessarily reject the hypothesis that external deficits in the US are sustainable.

Description:
This paper sets out to investigate the statistical properties of current account in the crisis-affected countries of East Asian (Asian-5: Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand) utilizing data from 1976Q1 to 2001Q4. We split the full sample period into two sub-periods of the pre-crisis (1976Q1-1996Q4) and post-crisis (1997Q1-2001Q4) eras. Univariate unit root tests indicate that current account follows a non-stationary process under both eras. However, using more sophisticated panel techniques revealed that the current account displays mean-reverting property in all three sampling periods. Meanwhile, deviations of half-life estimates in the full sample period (post-crisis) were found to be much more rapid compared to the pre-crisis period. Our major conclusions are first, the empirical evidence supports the modern intertemporal approach to current account. Second, the results reveal that the Asian-5 current accounts were on a sustainable path, even during the pre-crisis period, hence, questioning the notion that the East Asian financial crisis was due to the mismanagement of external imbalances.

This paper proposes a method to asses the potential problems of sustainability of a country's sovereign debt. We claim that the relevant variables used for this analysis are typically subject to changes that are associated with changes in macroeconomics policies. We propose a procedure for identifying periods under which the current account accumulates at a non-stationary rate. Our approach is based on imposing identifying restrictions on Markov switching type models. Empirical applications of the procedure to Argentina, Brazil, Japan, UK and USA are examined and discussed.

Helpful but repetitious and ultimately insufficient.......2007-05-12

On almost every page we are reminded that we must be honest. Give me a break. On the other side of the detail spectrum, there are a lot of dead ends, e.g. where one must fill out a form, but not send it to anyone. The main thing this book did for my cluster of heirs was put us all into a frame of agreement, i.e. we all bought the book, so we all had the same information. If the executor was not keeping up with something, the rest of us knew to send a reminder. But in the end, we decided to hire a lawyer to do the job. He knew a lot of stuff that wasn't in the book. What a relief.

Thorough Detailed Insight of The Executor's Role.......2007-01-27

I purchased this book in June 2006 along with another Nolo publication called "Get It Together: Organizing Your Records for Loved Ones". Both books offer a treasure trove of information, resources, forms, websites, government agencies, etc. to plan the nuts and bolts of your estate should there be an unfortunate call from the grim reaper for you or close relatives or friends.

I feel such a sense of freedom and security knowning all my affairs are in order should I be involved in an accident, be incapacitated or die. In addition, I have educated myself now in a cogent state of mind. The Executor's Guide covers a lot of territory, so you do not what to be learning what to do under emotional and tragic circumstances if at all possible.

Just by looking at the Table of Contents alone, I think it's safe to conclude there will be a number of chapters of where you will have a basic understanding of the title, but lack a more detailed appreciation of the subject matter. All materials are presented in a down to earth style with hints, tricks and traps to avoid along the way.

Executor's Guide is at it's greatest when discussing an event or responsibility, who does and doesn't need to be involved, discussing the legal ramifications and how the legal system works generally with respect to the event and the next steps to take. Please pickup this excellent resource you can share with others in your family or friends, so you can effectively deal with someone's estate if you are asked and learn some tips to manage your own records.

An excellent guide for those of us struggling to manipulate the legal maze of probate. After having read the book, I was able to avoid asking as many questions of an attorney resulting in savings to the estate of hundreds of dollars. More importantly, I was able to deal with heirs and family members in a fair and intelligent manner. No one has been able to complain of things not being explained clearly or of the process moving too slowly. I would recommend the book to anyone who is about to administer an estate.It is a great tool for an heir or family member who simply wants to be better informed.

Review of Executor's Guide.......2006-08-09

I discovered this book in the our city library, and decided to purchase it as I felt that it would be very useful. It covered most of the areas of information an Executor or Trustee would want to know. My neighbor also read the book and some of the subject areas made her decide to go back to an attorney with more questions concerning her current Trust.

I would highly recommend this book for individuals who may become Executors or Trustees. It covered information in a simplistic manner in lieu of using lawyer language. It also covers tax ramifications but is not the basic goal of this helpful publication.

Comprehensive, if a little redundant.......2006-07-24

I would recommend The Executor's Guide not only to people who have been (or expect to be) named executors, but to anyone preparing a will or living trust. One of the most valuable chapters, in fact, is designed to help a future executor, by listing information he or shw would need to settle your estate -- bank accounts, location of vital records, etc. For those who are about to go through probate or distribute property held in trust, the book literally gives step-by-step instructions, all with a minimum of legalese and jargon. My only criticism is that some ideas -- even whole paragraphs -- are repeated in different chapters. But if you don't intend to read the book cover to cover, that wouldn't be a problem (and it might not bother you even if you do).

Biased Book.......2007-05-16

While this was a very interesting "inside view" of the pharmaceutical industry, the author (or ghost writer?) tries too hard to sound humanitarian, and ends up sounding rather fake (or as if he were going for a medical school interview). A lot of the book ends up being a justification of the marketing and sales of the drug, and ends up sounding heavy-handed. Also, the reader must be aware that this book does not tell the entire story of Gleevec - just search for it on the NY Times, and the patients will tell you the darker side of the tale. In the end, this book is just another marketing scheme for this niche drug, and should be treated as such.

Need Some Balance Here.......2006-08-11

The Magic Cancer Bullet is somewhat of a whitewash and has very little balance. If this is how the drug is being marketed to physicians, it is no wonder that I have experienced what I have.

Specifically, there ARE indeed toxicities and side effects with this drug - and I should know because I have CML and have been treated with Gleevec. The horrid thing is that there are patients like me who are not monitored properly at all.

My first hematologist was so blase about this leukemia that he told my answering machine that, yes, I definitely do have CML. Did he test for elevated liver enzymes every few months as recommended? No, of course not. Did he or any of his staff call me back when I called to ask why I was turning yellow? No. What DID he do? Prescribe Gleevec - and he also told me that I could take "all the Tylenol I needed" so long as I "don't overdo it." What does that mean? He was so bored he didn't even want much of a medical history. ALL he was interested in was the Philadelphia chromosome, nothing else at all. No advice for side effects, etc. It goes on and on, but I then went elsewhere.

Hematologist number Two is at least polite, but, when she upped the dose to 600 mg., I started to experience many more symptoms such as episodes of palpitations followed by dizziness and a feeling of faintness. She never even listened to my heart! (She doesn't even touch me at all during my visits!) All she did was lower the dose ONLY BECAUSE the Gleevec wasn't doing any more regarding the Philadelphia chromosome!

If you really want the truth about this drug, read the insert - and it's a long one. I am not saying that Gleevec is not a valuable drug - it is. BUT - some physicians are NOT MONITORING their patients properly. After all, isn't this supposed to be science? Can they always tell who may develop a problem? (Maybe they have a crystal ball?! Or do they really believe that they have the magic touch??)

Better monitoring, please. And temper your enthusiasm with some caution!

The issue is about cancer patients, their pain and a miracle drug.

The book sails through story of development of "Gleevec" pill. This medicine cured people with specific kind of cancer and saved lives.

It shows that a great deal of effort required over a sustained period of time from individual contributors that brought such a revolutionary medicine.

The Inside Story.......2003-06-27

This is an excellent account of the way things really happen. The media sometimes beats the political drum so loudly about the pharmaceutical industry being an evil empire that the other side of the story is never heard. Here is an inside look from the perspective of dedicated scientists, committed business executives, and the people they serve. If you want to base your opinions on all aspects of the issue, this is required reading.

As an employee within the pharmaceutical industry, this book will offer the reader an inside view of how a product goes from the research phase to finally, the consumer. As a father to a child with cancer, this book offers hope that someday a cure will be developed to eliminate cancer. A must read!
