    Book Description

Money, finance and credit are literally the lifeblood of the modern economy. The distribution of money and credit are essential to productive investment in trade and industry, to the maintenance of consumer purchasing power and demand, to individuals' social status and standard of living, and ultimately to public order. br br This volume provides a wide ranging discussion of both the potential and the problems arising from the application of the multi-level governance literature to the monetary and financial domain. The contributors achieve this through a range of case studies and conceptual discussions of the issues raised by financial and monetary governance, acknowledging that multi-level governance has to take the form of a framework, which recognizes a fluid range of scales, and the significance of non-formal institutional and or social nodes of authority. br br Drawing on a range of disciplines such as, economics, politics, IR, geography and sociology/ social anthropology this book demonstrates how International Political Economy can continue to evolve as an inter-discipline, and also how such inter-disciplinarity is a necessity for a well rounded understanding of money and finance.

      5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2001-05-30

As any consultant - and author Jack Phillips - will tell you, the days when a consultant could make a living by sharing the latest trendy approaches to business are long, long gone. Today's executives expect consultants to adhere to the same standards of accountability that consultants themselves have advocated for years. Therefore, the ability to determine a consulting project's return on investment is an important skill for both executives and the consultants they hire. Phillips offers a practical approach to ROI that somehow avoids consulting jargon and complex formulas. Although it lacks case studies that show how to overcome specific obstacles to data collection and interpretation, this is a valuable book that fills in an important piece of the consulting puzzle. Best of all, it does so in a common-sense way that can be understood by carbon-based life forms, therefore we [...] recommend this book to consultants and those who hire them.

3 out of 5 stars Good overview, but light on the actual details.......2001-01-11

Phillips provides a good, general overview of the metrics to consider in evaluating the return on consulting engagements. However, the book could have been significantly improved by the addition of at least one complete example of an application of the suggested method for calculating ROI, including a more in-depth treatment of the many survey methods suggested. Further, some of the snippets of the quantitative examples are simplified to the point of being misleading. Finally, the concept of the scorecard, which was part of the title of the book, was not developed in the text.

      5 out of 5 stars Campbell's Soup.......2000-06-27

Just like the soup, this book is mmmm...mmmm...good!

As a client, the book provided a very clear guideline to keep consultants accountable. I now feel that I will know when hiring a consultant is both a good idea and cost-effective. Knowing that I had read this book, our consultants were able to better communicate with us. Overall, incredible!

5 out of 5 stars A Complete Course in Small Business.......2005-07-15

Starting, Running & Growing a Small Business is something that you probably shouldn't do. 85% (or something like that) of small businesses fail within the first five years. On the other hand, if you're like me, you really have no choice, this is just something you have to do. I started my first one while in college. I had no idea of the problems that I would face, and sure enough it failed within a few months.

My second business lasted a little longer, my third for about ten years. Then it got cought in a classic inventory squeeze and boom it was gone too. When your business fails, you have to go to work for someone else. Hopefully you have learned something from the failure, and the next one works better. My current little business has paid me a living for some years, shows no signs of failing and is a hell of a lot more fun than having a boss.

Why do I say all this, it's because if I had known what was printed in this book when I was first getting started I could have done a lot of things differently, a lot of things better, and understood a lot more about what I was doing in general.

This book is basically a full course in running a small business. It's better than what you'd get in college (I know I have an MBA.) because colleges teach you how to be mid-level management in large companies and in a small business all the rules are really different.

This is a wonderful book. Open it to just about any page and you'll find something that will help you. Note especially the opening paragraph, with everything you have here, you'll still need some good old-fashioned luck. But the rest of the book will teach you that you often make your own luck.

I was originally only looking for a publication that would give me tips on creating an effective business plan - then I came across this book! This is a GREAT resource for not only beginning a business, but is an excellent reference to use during the course of your business - whether to improve revenue, create better bookkeeping methods, evaluate/re-evaluate your market, etc. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like some good, sound advice on starting and running their small business. There are also great checklists, worksheets and other useful tools to use.

This book is an excellent guide to technical writing. It provides clear, organized recommendations that are supported by research. It provides practical advice for writers in situations ranging from writing reports to reviewing colleagues work to creating web pages and writing email. Although there are 20 chapters, because it's so useful and well-written, it's a pretty quick read. A colleague let me borrow it and I think it's the best book I've found yet on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Best College Textbook.......2006-05-26

I found this book very helpful with regards to improving my writing skills. I originally read the book in 1989 in college and still refer to it today. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to significantly improve their writing business and technical skills. The books is easy to follow and contains many good examples.

4 out of 5 stars if you need a tech writing manual..........2001-01-30

this text is a bit droll, but what do you expect when considering the topic. it contains a lot that you should already know, but it makes a nice backup reference for writing tech papers or resumes, etc. it's not a must-have book, but it is a good one to own.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent total source for any technical writer........1999-04-29

I simply cannot say enough positive things about this book. It is exhaustive in details and examples, but easy to read and use. It also covers the entire technical realm - with the exception of on-line help systems. This book is not an advanced course on word processing or using RoboHELP, but rather is an advanced course on the entire technical writing profession. (From the Tech-L listserv.)

1 out of 5 stars Nothing more than common sense.......1999-04-11

We have to use this book for a technical writing class in school. Don't even bother reading the text--the headings will suffice. There's nothing in here that you don't already know.

                            Book Description

No Debt, No Sweat! shows Christians how to free themselves from the bondage of financial pain. It is written for people who are financially sound and looking for investment strategies as well as people who are in financial turmoil and need a successful plan for getting out of debt. Author Steve Diggs discusses some very serious issues, with a style that is humorous and upbeat. His focus is biblical, while his approach is confessional. No Debt, No Sweat! will teach readers that over-spending is frequently a spiritual issue—often trying to fill the holes in our hearts with stuff. Yet, upon closer examination, readers will see that these holes are shaped exactly like Jesus—and nothing else will fill them.

                            Book Description

Hidden Champions reveals the strategies and practices of hundreds of low-profile high-performance German companies. How do these companies--small- and mid-sized niche firms like Brita, the world leader in point-of-use water filters--do it? They are all great innovators; many have created their own markets. They have expanded a narrow product focus to meet the needs of customers around the world. They avoid outsourcing, diversification, and strategic alliances, instead creating unmatchable internal competencies. They are extremely close to their customers but have no large marketing departments. They are led by executives who are both authoritarian and participative. Their hallmark is continuity, with almost no employee turnover and an average CEO tenure of 24 years. This groundbreaking and contrarian book lends extraordinary insights into building and defending market leadership. It is a compelling wake-up call for back-to-basics management.

5 out of 5 stars They Know Who and Where They Are.......2000-01-13

What can be learned from 500 German companies, most of which you have probably never heard of? Actually, a great deal. The book is Hidden Champions and ts author is Hermann Simon. He explains that his book "reveals the secrets of success of the best of the best unknown companies." They are unknown, for the most part, because that's the way they want it. They "relish their obscurity. They shy away from publicity, some through explicit policies of not dealing with the press --or, by the way, with academic researchers!" such as the author. Simon selected them according to three criteria: They must be #1 or #2 in a world market or in their European market; they must be small-to-midsize; and they must have low public visibility.

In Chapter 11, the final chapter, Simon carefully reviews various "lessons" which can be learned from "hidden champions." He categorizes them as follows: Lessons for Large Corporations, Lessons for Champion Corporations, Lessons for Diversified Corporations, Lessons for Small Companies, Lessons for Investors, and General Qualitative Lessons. He concludes: "The hidden champions go their own ways. Their procedures are quite different from those of other companies and of modern management teaching. Essentially, their only secret success formula is common sense. So simple, but so difficult to achieve! This is the ultimate lesson."

Simon is to be commended for drawing attention to "champions" who know who and where they are...even if we didn't until now. His book is well-written, the content is substantial, and the lessons to be learned from these "champions" have immense potential value. However, as Coach Darrell Royal once observed, "potential" means "you ain't done it yet."ÿ

5 out of 5 stars Eliminate Stalled Thinking About World Business Leadership.......1999-07-29

Many of us become aware of a few models of how to prosper. Magazines like Fotune, Forbes, and Business Week are one example; and they help us understand the e-commerce start-ups and the really LARGE companies. Books about successful leaders help as well (Jack Welch and Warrren Buffett books abound). Enrepreneurs are featured in other magazines like INC. What we get very little of is information about outstanding small and medium sized companies around the world who do things according to other ways of succeeding. This very large information gap is greatly improved by reading THE HIDDEN CHAMPIONS. If you have read and liked BUILT TO LAST, CUSTOMERS.COM, THE INNOVATOR'S DILEMMA or MANAGEMENT CHALLENGES FOR THE 21ST CENTURY (all are excellent books: be sure to read them if you haven't yet), be sure to add THE HIDDEN CHAMPIONS. This book is the sort of superb research that will stimulate your thinking about new models for how to succeed and prosper. The book is easy to read and understand, and you will learn about a lot of very well run businesses that you currently do not know about. You have a real treat ahead of you!

5 out of 5 stars Not only Fortune 500 companies deserve the spotlight.......1999-02-19

A nice change to the many many books and essays on how a Fortune 500 company did great. These small and medium sized companies are fantastic examples of what the core ingredients of a succesfull strategy are. Especially in times in which small technology companies conquer the world, the insights from the Hidden Champions are a must-read!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Study of Dominant World-Class Exporters.......1999-01-28

The main weakness of many business books is that they study the same companies over and over again and make the same points, until the companies start to do badly, and then new companies are found to describe in the same tired way. Peter Drucker told me about this book, and I am very glad that he did. By selecting very successful smaller companies with dominant world exporting positions, Hermann Simon gives us a totally different universe to consider. The lesons are very valuable, because these companies have found another path to success that most larger companies ignore. For an entrepreneur, this book is a better guide than 99% of the books about what entrepreneurs should do, because it points the way to large, lasting success. I have tried to do the same thing in my work, published annually in CHIEF EXECUTIVE magazine, by studying the most successful 100 CEOs in the country. These people also do things differently than what the business books suggest, and their model is quite different from what Hermann Simon found with these companies. The lesson seems to be that there are many paths to the top, and we should spend time finding them. This book is a "must" read for anyone who is serious about business success. I look forward to future books by Mr. Simon.

                            4 out of 5 stars Very usefull.......1997-11-10

this is a very practical guide to what are some of the best practices in medium sized businesses. Extremely usefull. Shows that family businesses are very healthfull.
