The rise and fall of beer trends--from sports sponsorships to low-cals, and status-conscious imports to creatively crafted microbrews--mirror, in many ways, the larger culture that embraces them. Philip Van Munching, a young journalist who also represents the third generation in his family to toil in the beer business, offers a clever and knowing look at its ups and downs in Beer Blast: The Inside Story of the Brewing Industry's Bizarre Battles for Your Money.

          Book Description

Brewing, a venerable American industry, once was dominated by family-owned firms serving a loyal clientele. In the late 1970s, however, the conglomerates got involved, and the beer wars erupted. In Beer Blast, a veteran of the beer wars (from the famous Van Munching clan, importers of Heineken) shares his wealth of colorful, often amazing stories about the personalities, battles, and follies of the beer biz.

5 out of 5 stars Beer Blast is a blast.......2003-07-25

This is terrific reading, not only for beer lovers and marketing buffs. Philip van Munching, grandson of the man who first brought Heineken to the United States, has written a non-fiction book that contains all the ingredients of a first-class thriller: megalomanic dynasties, a fatal car accident the evidence of which was tempered with, mad-gone advertising gurus, and conglomerates trying to take over the hood ("get your girl in the mood quicker, and get your jimmy thicker with St. Ides malt liquor"). Along the way, the reader learns quite a bit about marketing. That is what the Ivy-League-trainined marketing whiz kids at Anheuser-Busch, Miller, and Coors, apparently never did. Instead, they squandered away hundreds of millions of dollars in their futile attempts to win one of the most fiercely fought business wars of the last twenty five years: the war for the American beer market. Van Munching knows how they did it, and he tells it with wit and an incredible insider's knowledge. Great story, great writing, great book!!!

5 out of 5 stars Very good read.......2003-01-25

This book was very informative and written quite well. I would strongly recommend this book for anyone that likes to read about industry profiles. I also liked the fact that I did not have to know that much about the beer industry in order to enjoy the book.

          5 out of 5 stars Smooth, crisp, flavorful.....just a great book.......2001-12-05

Now here's a book about something near and dear to my heart (and mouth). I bought this book when it first came out after hearing a radio interview with Philip Van Munching and finding him not only very informative, but also hilarious. This book is very entertaining and informative (and it always makes me thirsty for a cold one, but I digress).

Being in the Van Munching family it's hard to knock him for his emphasis on Heineken (is he supposed to know more about Miller and Anheiser Busch than his own family's company?) The book gives a very detailed background of the beer industry in the US but mainly focuses on the period beginning in the seventies which he refers to as the "Beer Wars" when Anheiser Busch, Miller and Coors began to take over.

Anyone interested in business, advertising and marketing in particular, will really enjoy this book. Oh yeah, and if you like to enjoy a cold one from time to time you'll also like this book. I've aleways been more of a microbrew drinker myself (beer snob) so I've never really enjoyed anything brewed by the big three. After reading this book I don't think I'll be enjoying anything from them anytime soon. Like one of the reviews on the back of the book says, " I don't know which one of them deserves my money less." Cheers!

5 out of 5 stars What You want to know about the beer industry!.......2001-05-12

This book is a great read and an interesting study of the beer industry and its history. The author due to his ties (son of the Heineken importer) provides great insight, but also some thoughtful and usable management and marketing analysis.

5 out of 5 stars Bubbly, dry and very palatable.......2001-01-10

Philip van Munching's book is less about the history and genesis of US beer - though those bases are very well covered - than it is about the lunacy of marketing, the most bogus science of the last century. It seems extraordinary that global brands are in the hands of so many people who appear this clueless - how the brewing giants ever sell a drop is unimaginable. But PVM tells their tale with a great deal of skill and wit, and - like most of the beers he describes - there's a zesty bitterness to most of the opinions. The best compliment? This is a guy I'd really like to share a beer with . . . .

It has excellent sentences and doesn't use a lot of big words to define other words, nor does it give circular definitions (defining cat as an animal and an animal as a cat) but it does go into grammatical terms and usage notes that might be confusing if not properly learned. It's the first dictionary (besides the Webster's New World Dictionary of Basic American English, which is absolutely invaluable) that allows me to get a full understanding of a word without making me chase through twenty other words. It'd be 5 stars if it just didn't go into grammatical terms, but even those have to be understood to know how to use the word. I highly highly recommend it.

                From the publisher

The words explained in this dictionary account for over 90% of the language that is written and spoken. That is because there is a relatively small number of words which are used over and over again, while there is a larger number of words which are not used very frequently. For example, in this introduction, there are 743 words in total. Of these, the word `the' occurs 61 times, while 169 words occur only once. In fact, there are only 275 different words in the whole of the introduction. In a much larger amount of text, the words that do not occur very frequently are much less important. That is why this dictionary concentrates on the words that occur over and over again, and why the entries represent the language that students really do need to know and to use.

The entries provide a detailed account of the main uses and meanings of each word. Each of the forms is listed at the start of each entry, along with information about variant spellings where they exist. Explanations are written in full sentences, and reflect typical grammatical behaviour as well as providing a clear description of meaning. And of course, the thousands of examples are taken directly from The Bank of English, showing typical patterns of use and grammatical structure.

There are a number of usage notes throughout the text which supplement the information already provided in the dictionary entries, and which, in many cases, draws together information that helps to clarify the distinctions that exist between some items.

A great tool for everyone who is learning English as a second language, assuming the student is in a level high enough to understand the meaning of a word without depending on direct translation. It's especially helpful in learning how to use prepositions and verbs in a sentence.

                      Book Description

THE FIRST FINANCIAL GUIDE TAILORED EXCLUSIVELY TO LESBIAN AND GAY COUPLES ON HOW TO PROTECT THEIR ASSETS WHEN LAWS FAIL

Lesbian and gay couples can achieve solid, long-term financial security--but they need to arm themselves with foresight, awareness, and facts. That's what this book is all about. Now, drawing on more than twenty years' experience as a financial adviser to lesbian and gay couples, Harold L. Lustig has written the definitive financial guide for you and your partner.

Through Lustig's four easy-to-follow steps to economic security--PLAN, PLAN, PLAN; PROTECT WHAT'S YOURS; THINK COMMUNITY; USE NON-CONVENTIONAL WISDOM AND TAKE ACTION--this invaluable book gives you workable financial strategies and up-to-date information on

                      - Estate planning--why it's especially vital for you and your loved one
                      - Tax advantages available to you--and not to legally recognized couples
                      - Reducing your tax load through charitable contributions and shifting assets
                      - A domestic partner agreement--why it is critical to your financial well-being
                      - Avoiding the "gay penalty" on long-term health care and retirement plans
                      - Tips for funding a college education--without dropping into the red
                      - Reentering the job market when you are HIV positive
                      - Buying and fine-tuning disability insurance
                      - The facts about joint ownership
                      And much more!

Despite unfavorable laws, you can protect your assets, provide for retirement, avoid discriminatory penalties, and ensure that you and your partner enjoy and share what you've earned together. From building and transferring wealth with life insurance to creating documents that protect you when marital laws do not, this clear, smart, practical guide provides the essential financial information that every lesbian and gay couple needs and deserves.

3 out of 5 stars proceed with caution! (not for the novice).......2003-04-18

This is a well written and easy to understand book that provides some much needed advice for lesbian and gay couples. That being said, the author's advice is not without bias (in favor, for example, of using insurance as an investment vehicle), so readers are advised to compare these recommendations to those of other experts with differing opinions. For myself, I agree with those who look with a jaundice eye at whole or universal life insurance as a planning or savings tool. (Term life is usually best and cheapest: consider the advice of Suze Orman, for example; or the excellent and readable "Personal Finances for Dummies" book by Eric Tyson.) Also, the book's warning that under New York law a lesbian or gay partner is not an "insurable interest" seems incorrect or perhaps out of date: my partner and I had no trouble getting life insurance naming one another as beneficiary. And some of the more complex strategies that involve transferring title to assets don't include a complete set of their disadvantages. On balance, I'd urge anyone reading this book to both (1) read it carefully and (2) assess the advice for your personal situation while comparing approaches from other advisors (like Orman and Tyson).

Still, any book that gets gays and lesbians to focus on savings and legal strategies to protect our relationships is a needed one, and this one provides a helpful focus on issues that are specific to our community.

5 out of 5 stars Answered Questions I didn't even know to ask..........2001-08-07

My partner and I just bought a house, combined our checking account, and were unaware of the problems we could be facing. While we knew we needed rights of survivorship and wills, we didn't think of the tax issues, trusts, and the plethora of other issues addressed so clearly and to the point in this book. If you are queer or straight and committed but not married, this book is a goldmine of information!

5 out of 5 stars A much needed guide thru the paperwork maze.......1999-09-05

Lustig's book is a must-read for any gay or lesbian couple, as it tackles such sticky wickets as purchasing life insurance when one has serious medical problems, viaticals, and the hurdles of retirement plan assets when a partner with an employer-funded plan dies. It's easy to read with "frequently asked questions" and gives step-by-step instructions for approaching insurance companies, mortgage brokers and traditional bankers. If you think the world of financial responsibility is difficult to navigate with laws and mores directed at traditional heterosexual couples - imagine the nightmare it can be for those who are discriminated against, and for whom there is no protection. The book isn't a long exercise in financial planning - it's an explanation of fundamentals with sound advice and tips. Very worthwhile reading for just about anybody.

                        Book Description

Outdoor learning leader Outward Bound USA (OB USA) will be celebrating their 40th anniversary in 2002. As part of their celebration they are releasing an updated edition of OB USA, originally published in 1981. Outward Bound is well-known for their courses in outdoor learning but few people understand the philosophy behind these programs. This book explains how OB USA founder Joshua T. Minor came to understand the teachings of Kurt Hahn considered a progressive educator in World War II Europe, and shows how the foundation of growing through experiencing the unfamiliar, the difficult and the adventurous, has created a company that has grown to embrace five separate wilderness schools, two urban centers, and several other sites in the United States.

This new edition will cover the same ground as the original book, plus two new chapters will be added that describe OB programs based on expeditionary learning (learning by doing) and where OB is headed for the new millennium.

Outward Bound programs can be found in the Peace corps training program, schools across the country, activities in colleges, programs in disadvantaged communities, and juvenile delinquency programs. An Outward Bound course includes: Wilderness Skills Training; Expeditionary Learning; Working in Small Groups; Environmental Stewardship; Solo experiences; High-Performance Team Dynamics; and Service. OB has developed many of their courses for use in public schools and have a thriving program. OB also has Outward Bound Professional programs to create positive and lasting change in the workplace by improving individual group and organizational effectiveness.

5 out of 5 stars The definative history Outward Bound in the USA.......2003-07-03

This great, classic history of Outward Bound in the United States has been updated to include the newer parts of Outward Bound including Expeditionary Learning, the highly successful school reform initiative.

One of the authors, Josh Miner, was responsible for bringing Outward Bound to the United States. He was there when it all started and his stories are so real and down to earth. This book is a must read for any one who has interest in Outward Bound or outdoor adventure in general.
