Customer Reviews:
A DEFINITE "MUST HAVE" book for Consultants.......2007-02-07
Alan has done it again, as he has so many times before. This is yet another book full of relevant advice, common sense, and just good stuff all round! As with all of Alan's boooks, this is a definite "NEED TO" book for ALL consultants who call themselves PROFESSIONAL.
Excellent Sales Book!.......2006-12-09
I have read almost all the books in this series as well as several others on the topic Mr. Weiss has written. They are all excellent! Contrary to another reviewer this book is not a rehash of other material. This book is incredible in telling consultants how to track down and land new clients, which is the life blood of any consulting practice.
I loved the section on overcoming objections. In my practice I have run into some of these objections as well as others and never had a good answer for them. Now I do. The material in this book changed my consulting sales in the one year since I started implementing the ideas and revenue has doubled in that same year.
If you are a consultant and have ever struggled with over coming objections, searching for new clients, or landing new business then you need to read this book.
Guaranteed Techniques that Get the Sale.......2006-10-22
Like the other books from this series, "How to Acquire Clients" is very hands on, and is presented in Alan Weiss' inimitable, tell-it-like-it-is style.
It begins with the proposition that successful selling occurs at the intersection of need, competency and passion - all of which, fortunately can be controlled by the consultant. Contrarian as ever, Weiss makes the case for generalising as a way to broaden your appeal, while customising your approach for high potential prospects.
In the second chapter, you are told to focus on the economic buyer (the fellow who has the budget and dicretion to spend on your services). You are taught to identify, meet and interact with the economic buyer as a peer. You also learn indirect methods of getting to the economic buyer where direct means fail.
Further you learn to match your approach to the predisposition of the buyer, follow a plan for controlling your meeting by setting objctives for each meeting, providing value early, listening 75% of the time and ending with an action plan suggested by you. You also learn to rebut obections which generally fall into no trust, no need, no hurry and no money (though they may be disguised as other issues).
Ever realistic, Weiss also teaches you how to "steal" clients from other consultants by plucking low-hanging fruits, positioning yourself through high vsibility, providing a bold contrarian solution to issues etc. You also learn to ensure repreat business and how to be selective (avoiding clients you do not want and getting those you do).
Overall, the book provides top value for money.
Alan tells it like it is.......2005-03-17
Alan Weiss tells it like it is. If you want to learn from one of the best...read EVERYTHING Alan Weiss writes! Alan's insights and experience are second to none. I personally own just about every book Alan Weiss has written. He is not only a consultant's consultant, but he is also a gifted writer as well.
Alan Weiss's advice, insights and knowledge will take years off your learning curve. This book is a must for your library.

Can Help You Acquire Clients Tomorrow.......2004-02-24
It has always seemed to me that when quite a few 5-star reviews are accompanied by a couple of one and two-star reviews, something is worth reading. I found this book to be exceptional in that it: addresses finding new targets of opportunity; discusses a variety of ways to get to the buyer; examines behavioral predispositions; provides sample objections and rebuttals; teaches how to deal with committees; and a great deal more. The 5-star reviews are based on this kind of pragmatic detail and the one-stars on clear resentment of Dr. Weiss's success, apparently. In any case, if you're trying to sell professional services, buy this book. The sections on how to provide value early in the sales process and a dozen new sources of business are worth it alone.
Book Description
Managing Business Growth is the fourth book in the Numbers 101 for Small Business series from Angie Mohr. Mohr teaches small business owners how to profitably expand their businesses by using sound financial planning. The book shows you how to measure the effectiveness of your operations, human resources, and marketing to correct inefficiencies, pinpoint new opportunities, and maximize profits.
Many small business owners are successful at what they do, but aren't able to make the next step in expanding their operations without breaking the bank. Managing Business Growth shows you how to create a step-by-step financial plan designed to cultivate growth and profits. You will learn how to set up a strategic plan, and how to test these strategies to ensure they are producing positive results.
Like all the books in the Numbers 101 series, this book is written in an easy-to-digest manner that caters to busy entrepreneurs. It contains a blend of instruction and illustrated examples following the story of Joe's plumbing, a typical small business.
Customer Reviews:
You'll believe in planning if you read this book.......2006-05-08
What a goldmine of information and checklists for an entrepreneur. So many small business owners start their enterprises only to see them fail before much time has passed. If only those unsuccessful entrepreneurs had had this book at their side to keep them on track to success. I highly recommend this book for small business owners.
It usually takes some capital to start a business. It also requires a business plan and a marketing plan. If those plans are realistic and reasonable, then things will probably go well. If they aren't, or if they become outdated, then the business will probably eventually fail.
This book discusses how a business owner should always be planning or updating his or her plan. Checklists are provided for this. To do this one must look at themselves, look at the past business, the current business, and vision a future business. They must do strategic planning on a regular basis and things should work smoothly, or as smoothly as possible.
There is such a thing as bad growth. That's the kind that just hits the business owner who cannot deal with it effectively. This could be an increase in product demand that cannot be met, or product demand that can be met but only by stressing the organization to near breaking point.
By reading this book you should become aware that planning for success in business and then achieving it is so much better than just stumbling into it.

Customer Reviews:
A wonderful resource.......2003-09-18
As someone who once thought that the Peace Corps was the only way to do development work overseas, I was thrilled to find the wide variety of alternatives to the peace corps in this book. I recommend it to anyone thinking about going abroad to do consciencious work.
Okay - but old content.......2000-10-23
As one who served two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Iran, 1970-72; I wonder why anyone would choose an alternative to the Peace Corps. Peace Corps language training is superlative. The Peace Corps has always manifested altruism. It took two years to learn both spoken colloquial and spoken literary Persian. I was just beginning to learn Classical Persian when the two years were came to an end. I also learned written Persian in the form of Naskh, Nastaliq, and Shekastay, (the last being highly cursive).
Out of Date.......2000-10-01
This book has honorable intentions. However, the publisher/author did not bother to update the information prior to republishing in 1999. I have already received notices from 15 contacts in the book that they are either no longer functioning, the address is no longer valid, or the email is no longer valid. You'd be just as well off looking at an older (and free) version in the library. Should the publisher/author wish to invest a little time and some rewriting, the book might once again be useful in the year 2000.
'Alternatives' helpful.......2000-05-11
Very helpful...liked the web page URLs and how the authors list expenses of each opportunity.
Excellent Information For Potential Volunteers.......2000-05-10
This book is an excellent reference guide to those wishing to do volunteer work, worldwide. It has great ideas for alternatives to the politically controlled Peace Corp. I recommend this book for anyone who truly wants to help needy people worldwide.
Customer Reviews:
It worked!.......2007-07-03
A good friend gave this book to me when I announced my pregnancy and my desires to stay at home once the baby was born...but was scared that we wouldn't be able to survive financially on one income. Within about 7-8 months... we were able to save a big cushion (at the advice of the author) ...we practiced living on one income (like the author suggested) all during my pregnancy...we started sacrificing financially immediately so we could get used to NOT having everything we wanted (material possessions or 'wants'). It worked!!! We were able to live off that saved income for one full year....still sacrificing many things...we didn't have cellphones, no cable, etc. etc. And again, I was scared I would have to go back to work when my son turned a year old...but God delivered. He provided another better-paying job for my husband, right when we needed it. So now, my son is almost 4 and I've been able to spend the entire time with him...and our finances are great!
It can be done. You just have to be able to really pick apart your budget snd see which things can be chopped out/or minimalized. Sell your car/trade it for a less expensive used car (pay cash in full from your trade so you don't have a car pymt)...or just have one family car -- yes, many families do this! no cellphones, no internet, no cable tv, garage sale/thrift store shopping, keeping our junky old car for 10 yrs instead of buying a new one!, taking mass transportation trains/buses to work -- We've done it all and it worked!! I was 9 months pregnant hobbling off to catch the train every morning and evening, but it was soo worth it to save the money we needed so I could stay home.
I was really encouraged by this book and it gave me some great advice to follow. When it comes down to it, it's like losing weight, you must sacrifice and change the way you live now....that's how you got out of hand in the first place (w/finances or weight)...it's an uncomfortable lifestyle change at the beginning, but then you get used to it and it's well worth it!
Good Perspective.......2003-11-07
I read this book while pregnant with my first child and it was helpful. Larry Burkett gives a good perspective on the pros/cons of being a stay-at-home parent. Initially, I wondered why a man would write this book since most stay-at-home parents are women. But once I began reading, I realized that he includes many true family stories as examples. Stories about faith AND practicality make this book authentic. He also includes information about personalities, including a personality test for both Mom and Dad. The budget section is gives a good basis for evaluating finances as well. Overall, a great read for parents/soon-to-be parents who are considering staying at home.
I was inspired.......2003-07-08
I enjoyed this book very much. I am considering becoming a stay at home mom. I bought this book and a non-christian book. They were both helpful. I was most inspired by reading what I considered to be God inspired Bible based information. I also like it that his stories were real and not intended to sugar coat the experience. I am making plans to resign my job soon with Gods direction. A bonus of this book to me is the emphasis on Godly managed finances.
Truly the Best! ..........2003-04-15
Opposed to others who view Larry Burkett in negative terms, I believe he has a lot to offer those who are "teachable" and willing to learn. That his is the only solution is not the point, but he speaks from a biblical viewpoint, and it is worth listening to.
In this book, he observes how outside influences are wreaking havoc on family values, and now is the time for mothers to find a way to spend more time with their children. Two-income families outweight single-income families, he says, three to one, although it might be higher at this writing. Home-based business are becoming the trend, and even so much more now, and Burkett gives insightful, practical counsel on how to survive the cutback from two incomes to one. This is "counsel," mind you, and if you are interested in counsel, this is the place to go.
Larry also discusses the four personality types, and whether or not you agree with this mode of character types, he explores how they relate to the home environment and includes personality tests in the Appendix for both husbands and wives.
This is a valuable resource guide for women who have made the transition from the marketplace to home, and they share honest, personal accounts of victories, setbacks, fears, and joys. If it is your desire to be a stay-at-home mother, but fear financial disaster, this book will help guide you in the right direction.
My family has taken counsel from Larry Burkett, and my wife did make the transition from marketplace to a "stay-at-home Mom," and she is enjoying every minute of it. Yes, she did have some of the same issues he explores, but now with our children, she can spend her every moment with them, instead of listening to others tell her how our children are growing.
A great book, and highly recommended!...
Not the best out there.......2002-02-11
I frankly don't know what the best book on this subject is but this can't be it. I love Larry Burkett but this book did not excite me. Don't get me wrong there are several chapters with great advice and very helpful testimonies but overall I was not very impressed. Sorry...
Book Description
What has made Silicon Valley so productive of new technologies and new firms? How did its pioneering achievements begin—in computer networking, semiconductors, personal computing, and the Internet—and what forces have propelled its unprecedented growth? This collection of nine chapters by contributors from varied disciplines—business, geography, history, regional planning, and sociology—examines the history, development, and entrepreneurial dynamics of Silicon Valley.
Part I, “History,” provides context for the Valley’s success by exploring its early industrial roots. It traces the development of the electronics industry in Silicon Valley back to the founding of Federal Telegraph in 1908, and discusses the role of defense spending and the relationship with Stanford University in the region’s growth. Part II, “Institutions,” emphasizes the importance of supporting institutions and practices in helping Valley startups succeed. Four chapters explore the role of law firms in facilitating the formation of new companies, the evolution of the venture capital industry and its role in funding new firms, the importance of labor mobility, and the significance of close interfirm relationships in the success of Silicon Valley companies.
Part III, “General Explanations,” presents three different perspectives on the environment that has made Silicon Valley so successful. The first chapter considers Silicon Valley as an ecosystem of interacting institutions, individuals, and a culture that encourages and nurtures entrepreneurship. The second chapter argues that Silicon Valley should not be seen as a region in which relationships are based on civic virtue, but rather one in which trust is based on performance, which makes it uniquely permeable to new ideas and talented individuals. The final chapter contends that institutions specializing in new firm formation are responsible for Silicon Valley's unique ability to foster technological advances.
Customer Reviews:
perfect book for the new Silicon valley residents!.......2001-06-15
At the center of all questions about the Valley lies the matter of innovation-for the Valley occasionally appears like a perpetual innovation machine. I say "innovation" rather than simply "invention," because innovation, to me, means invention implemented. And I have grudgingly come to realize that invention is often the easy part of innovation. The hard part is usually the implementation. Here I was particularly interested in Stuart Leslie's well-chosen quotation from a letter of Frederick Terman. Terman was the Stanford University dean who played godfather to Hewlett Packard and so many other early start-ups in the Valley. When he left the university to work on radar during World War II, he wrote back to a colleague at Stanford, "I had never before realized the amount of work required to make a device ready for manufacture after one had a good working model." It was a lesson he clearly learned well as he guided young Stanford graduates to innovative success.
