Concise superior textbook for financial planners and actuaries.......2007-05-02
Excellent coverage of mathematics of finance for accounting, finance, and actuary students. A literate investor would enjoy reading it also. No math beyond high school algebra required, however it goes into more depth on time-value-of-money concepts than the typical finance or accounting textbook. Contains numerous solved problems.

Customer Reviews:
An OK book on consulting, written sloppily.......1999-11-29
My time is very valuable and too much of it would have been required to read the whole book. I have to believe that this author knows what he's talking about, because he has been published many times, but I was not impressed with his writing style. It was very difficult to get into because he spent a lot of time focusing on what he was going to tell us later. By skipping pages and doing spot reading I did learn some, but there were too many typos and he was too wordy. I prefer the writing style of William Bond in Going Solo.

Customer Reviews:
A Most Valuable Tool.......2001-11-16
I highly recommend this book. In my work as a psychotherapist, I meet many women who have not yet come to terms with with their personal financial demons. A Woman's Book of Money & Spiritual Vision has provided me with a wonderful tool with which I can help them begin. The book is written in a personal style. The author shares her own story as she presents questions and worksheets to help the reader explore the dynamic of money in her history and in her day-to-day life. It can be used alone or with a group to help uncover the myths and facts behind one's financial attitudes and behaviors.
Women and Money: Despite Rumors, Made for Each Other.......2001-06-19
Rosemary Williams looks at money--crazy-making, delicious, necessary money--from every angle. She does the same with women's belief systems. Money is simple; it's our baroque beliefs that keep us from it. "Money is never neutral," she says. "It triggers powerful emotions and conflicting messages--especially for women. The 'money messages' we were taught can pop up at any moment, in decisions large and small."
This is "a workshop in a book" because that's how the author does her research. Her experience during years of leading women through the thorny underbrush of our misconceptions and false information could save the rest of us years of struggle and want.
A former banker and financial planner, Williams has constructed her book like a diary. This is one book meant to be written in, the pages covered in notes. I found that a relief ; somehow breaking that "rule" of my father's gave me the idea that other childhood "rules" were also about to be replaced by grownup liberations. It also called to mind the writing we do in school workbooks in the act of learning.
Something that may come as a surprise, says Williams, is that money and spirituality are not at odds. There are prayers and quotes scattered through this book. Somehow beginning this work by saying "Holy One, Sustainer of all things, give me the courage to look at my financial life with clear sight...." is a wonderfully centering process.
With "Women and Money" women can lessen their fear through dispelling ignorance, which is surely the root of all evil.

In A Sportsman's Life, Leigh Perkins tells a vivid and passionate story about how he turned Orvis into one of the country's most noted fly-fishing and sporting companies. A pioneer in the mail-order business, Perkins boosted sales of the Manchester, Vermont, company from $500,000 annually to nearly $200 million. Perkins believes he succeeded by building a superior product and selling "a lifestyle" in his catalogs--an appreciation of fishing, bird hunting, and country living. "We found not just a niche but an identity," he writes. "It was an exciting place to work." Perkins said he was never afraid of trying something new. Long before the concept became standard, for example, he traded mailing lists with competitors. He also grew Orvis by launching fishing and hunting schools, expanding into women's clothing, involving customers through an Orvis newsletter, offering odd items like bean bags for dogs, and turning out high-quality fly rods and reels.
Perkins, who recently retired, lived the life he sold. Orvis united his love of sales with his love of the outdoors. The book is packed with gripping adventure tales about fly fishing for bonefish off the Florida Keys, hiking the backcountry of New Zealand, Argentina, and Mexico, encountering bear in Alaska and tiger in India, and once almost getting poisoned to death in Africa. He even includes chapters on his favorite bird-hunting dogs and his efforts to protect open space. Written with Geoffrey Norman, the book should appeal to both business and outdoors types. --Dan Ring
Book Description
When Leigh Perkins bought the Orvis Company in 1965, the fly-fishing and bird-hunting outfitter was a sleepy business with annual sales that had leveled off at $500,000. Over the next thirty years Perkins built Orvis's annual sales to $100 million by revolutionizing the catalog retail industry and reshaping the company's tradition-bound culture. He achieved this by blending his love of nature with his business acumen and bringing the commonsense approach he learned in the streams and on his hunts to his boardroom decision making.
The basic principles he used to run his business include:
The Customer Is Always Right. . . Even When You Know Damned Well He's Wrong: Perkins put such a high priority on customer service that he would personally man the phones at the height of the holiday season each year to keep in touch with his customers.
Product Excellence: Perkins made sure that everything Orvis sold was of the highest quality--even if that meant he had to fight the US government to get access to embargoed Chinese bamboo for fly rods.
Empower Your Employees: By promoting from within, and by empowering his employees to solve problems without manager involvement, Perkins built a loyal and talented team.
Living the outdoor life his catalog popularized, Perkins traveled all over the world to fish and hunt, from Argentina to New Zealand, while devoting his resources to conservation causes worldwide.

'Recession-Buster' for Small Businesses.......2001-12-29
Here's a professional, yet practical, 'Recession-Buster' for any Small Business on the net. I found great ideas I never expected would work, but did! Dawn clearly explains the "why & how" for all topics. A couple examples -- I would've skipped the chapter on Banners if the reasons "why & how it will work" hadn't been laid out so well, knowing they carry some 'negatives.' Also, chapters on Website Privacy Policies, ALONE, are worth MORE than the cost of the book, since it alerts the reader to so many liability issues that most people never even thought of, and could help prevent unforeseen lawsuits! Overall, I found there is more to all topics in the book than I realized before, & it is a valuable resource!
I would recommend this book to all small business owners on the web, whether just starting out, or are more seasoned & computer savvy. Dawn has a GIFT for explaining these 'tricks of the corporate trade' to any level, and her unique writing style makes it an 'interesting read!'

Summary.......2004-12-24
This is a personal and passionately written book by one of the most celebrated and innovative critics of neo-classical economics. Ayres launches an audacious but compelling attack on mainstream economic theory in which he argues that economic growth in western countries no longer delivers real improvement in human welfare and is not only unsustainable but is harming prospects of future economic security. As he sees it, today's growth is a statistical illusion that merely reflects increasingly frantic trade activity.
He criticises governments of Western industrialised nations for their archaic tax regimes and crippling deficits and finds that economic growth is a self-sustaining prophecy that we have all come to assume and depend upon. The relationships between technological progress, taxes, unemployment, world trade and income distribution play a critical role in his analysis. He concludes that economic growth in the West will continue to slow down and that a social crisis will ensue unless a dramatic change of direction occurs.
However, he makes it clear that he does not advocate `no growth' and says that what is needed is `eco-restructuring' - a gradual but massive reverse substitution of human labour for fossil energy and natural resource extraction. As he sees it, the sustainable economy of the next century will be almost entirely based on services and all material products and capital equipment will be re-usable, remanufactured or recycled. This strategy will allow the rich industrialized countries to cut their resource consumption by 90 per cent.
He expects governments of the industrialized nations to take the lead and recommends massive tax and welfare reform as well as innovative polices, such as tradable import quotas and consumption allowances, to move industry in the right direction. Yet, by his own admission, his proposals lack political feasibility. While this book is innovative and based on trends that are hard to deny, it is not surprising that his recommendations are still a long way from political acceptance today, let alone implementation. Nevertheless, this book is a fascinating insight into the personal thinking of an innovative and influential economist.
