Being myself a consultant for many years I really enjoyed this guide. This short (a little more that a hundred pages) book places the emphasis very precisely on questions and problems of any consultant. And it gives solutions! This is a must-read book for any consultant regardless of his experience.

I went independent at the beginning of 2005 and I found this book most valuable in my search for quick and clear information. Once you buy it, you can register the book and get access to template contracts too (which makes this book really pay for itself 10-fold).

Rational and Practical!.......2005-08-27

At just 128 pages this book is short and sweet. However, don't be fooled by the brevity. The author provides shares real-world experiences and lessons learned over a lengthy career as a consultant. There is no fluff or philosophical preaching here. The author provides information he wishes he had known when he started his consulting practice. These kinds of tips are invaluable, and this book overflows with them. Concise, well written, well done!

Concise yet informative.......2004-11-10

I enjoyed the book. I've been considering entering the IT consulting field for a couple of years and have been doing some research. This book was the first I've seen that boiled down the steps to take to get there. The book was succinct and easy to digest, yet sufficiently detailed. I especially liked the information in there about starting out by doing contract work for headhunters. Mr. Webb was the first author to suggest that, that I've seen.

Joe Webb's guide to being a consultant in the Information Technologies field is informative and, unlike many books on the subject, gives comprehensive strategies with real world examples.

I would further recommend this book for any person in the IT field not yet comfortable taking the step into consulting, but wanting to move up in IT management and / or interested in increasing his or her compensation. Joe's candid explanation and suggestions on separation of work from self, along with directed instructions on how to deal with clients would be very beneficial to the aspiring IT professional. It is far too often the case that talented and ambitious IT folks limit their own growth and potential by not mastering these two skills even though technically they improve year to year.

This book provides new estimates of labor force participation for married women during the development of the U.S. economy. New census data reveals that a large number of women were excluded from the count of "gainfully occupied" persons in 1880, 1900, and 1910. This undercount was due in part to enumerator neglect, but also to the omission of many women performing work in family-run businesses. The traditionally accepted pattern of an initial decrease in women's labor force participation before 1940 followed by a rapid increase in the post-war period is replaced by one of relative constancy across the 20th-century. The new work rates estimated for women in the United States in the critical period of 1880 to 1910 are as high or higher than those reported in the post-World War II decades.
This underenumeration also reveals a crucial link between the racial gap in married women's labor force participation and the racial gap in male self-employment. A long-standing puzzle in the economics literature is the high labor force participation of black married women relative to white women with otherwise identical characteristics. This study demonstrates that because the majority of family businesses were owned by white men and the unreported family laborers were primarily white women, variations in husbands' self-employment status explain a significant portion of the previously elusive gap in women's labor force participation by race.

This book is filled with insanely obvious "insights" such as
--consider commuting to school rather than living on campus to save money and
--talk with practicing physician assistants to learn more.

Don't waste your money unless you need the obvious drawn out in torturous detail.

rudimentary overview.......2005-11-16

This is a short, simple overview of the PA profession that is worth the used book price. It reads more like a long magazine article than a book, for some reason. Anyone needing a nice quick introduction to the job will be satisfied with this book, although it's out of date. The many people interviewed seem to all be from Chicago, which is unusual, and also most got their education several years ago when there were literally dozens of different ways to become a PA. Modern day applicants will find many of the loosey-goosey programs of the past are now traditional masters programs just like any other. The old "I worked with a doctor for a few years and they let me sit for the boards" type of story is history, nothing more. Most of the content is just published questionnaires and personal short essays from respondents, without commentary or context by the author who seems to have no real personal knowledge of the profession. He might as well have been writing about the history of the bicycle or how air conditioning has changed our lives. But if you are just starting out and need a quick look at the job, this isn't a bad place to start.

Any idiot can do without this "book". It's basically a blank calander. Write down everything you earn and spend on a blank piece of paper and save yourself from writing down that you spend $16 on this book! Superficial and out of Date.......2006-11-25

Rather than saving the company, little Billy Ford had to take it over to prove to his infamous family that he could handle it all by himself. Since then, the company has gone down the drain, the product plan is a mess, plants have had to be closed, and the company has had to shed tens of thousands of workers. He drove the company off a cliff and all but ruined everything.

Now, fortunately, he is gone - and the more important story is what comes next - if anything - out of the wreck.

Superficial Puff Piece.......2005-12-29

Magee's book is mainly a adulatory puff piece on Bill Ford, great-grandson of Henry Ford. Magee opens with Ford's coommendable reaction to an explosion at its huge River Rouge plant - choosing to quickly go to the scene, followed by hospital visits and attending funerals.

Magee then goes on to delineate a number of problems that occured under its new CEO - Jac Nasser, a career employee. Unfortunately his strategies did not work out, resulting in large losses and deep dissension within the company and its dealer network. Sources of problems included implementing a "rank-and-yank" system (similar to G.E.'s) that pitted white-collar employees against each other, buying and operating 50 dealerships in an effort to try new approaches -> creating fear within the ranks of existing dealers, buying and operating servicing and fueling operations in England -> fear of similar intrusions into U.S. dealer operations, quality problems delaying and marring the T-Bird's re-introduction, squeezing dealer margins, expanding Ford Credit operations -> losses, and an excess focus on its premier foreign car line (Jaguar, Land Rover, and Volvo) -> perception that the basic Ford line was being unattended.

Again, Ford, to his credit, recognized the problem and took action to replace Nasser and change directions to correct the problems - restoring tranquility and profitability.

Unfortunately, that is not the end of the story. Ford (as well as G.M. and Chrysler) is losing market share to Japanese car-makers, its SUV moneymaker sales have declined with rising gas prices, its competitive position vs. Japanese car-makers is considerably weakened due to high legacy costs for worker healthcare and pension costs, and its credit-rating (along with G.M.) has been dropped to junk-bond status. Meanwhile, a loss is projected for 2005, its stock price has dropped about 40% in the last 15 months (90% since 1977). Latest information is that they will be cutting staff 70,000 - not a good omen!

This is not to say that William Ford is a poor manager - simply that it faces a very difficult and uncertain road ahead.

Interesting story of Bill Ford.......2005-06-28

When Bill Ford took over Ford Motor, the company was in dreadful shape. Under his leadership, Ford has made plausible progress. This book recognizes that, but it also recognizes there are still problems with the company, due in large part to industry ailments, the end of SUV sales and outdated products.
The books makes it obvious however that he is not hiding from these issues and is instead addressing them head on.
This is the first account of Henry Ford's great grandson and it offers much insight into how he sees the world and runs one of America's most important companies.

A bit rosy, but good nonetheless........2005-01-14

My dad use to work for Ford in the late seventies, so he bought Fords well into the early eighties. So, as a kid growing up the eighties, all I saw was my dad trying to fix the Fords in the late eighties. I actually thought that a car breaking down every few months was actually normal. Needless to say, I own a Toyota now. So this book intrigued me. How could a company that my father was proud of revive itself to something that I might consider purchasing a product from?

Well, this book describes Bill Ford's life and the life of the Ford Motor company. To address the negatives first, while mostly honest, he tends to overestimate how bad things have gotten in the nineties while and overestimates how good Ford is in the present day and in the not so recent past. He gives the impression that Ford's quality issues and their financial problems were recent problems that are totally resolved. He makes Bill Ford look like a super genius who fixed everything in his first few year.

Now to point out the good. This book is part history lesson, part biography, part financial, part business book all mixed into one. Magee actually goes into depth with not just mere anecdotes and Bill Ford's life story, but gets into numbers and processes. He talks about management styles, he talks about strategies. He delves into design and the competition. More importantly, he brings a lot of relevant and pertinent information in a fluid, quick manner that doesn't bog down the reader.

I will definitely read more books from this author, and for anyone interested in the automotive industry, or anyone interested in large corporations, this book is a must read.

This man is a crook! We lost several million dollars in his company. By far the man with the worst reputation in Hong Kong! Him and his lackey, Jon Hakim, has also cheated investors in their money laundering vehicle, the bar Jah. Not surprisingly, the bar is now closed and we have all lost our investment. Never do business with these con men!

An insanely good book.......2001-06-15

This is a great book to say the least. It was particularly meaningful to me since I am a senior at college looking for jobs. This book not only inspired me, gave me ideas, told me what to do and how to do it right (if I decided to head out on my own in the world) but also was a wonderful reminder of what I can do if I put my mind to it. The life stories and experinces that are shared in this book are great. These experiences are from a number of entrprenuers and I personally belive will be helpful to all people for dealing with many situations in life. I highly recommend this book to everyone. This, to me, is an insanely good book.

A Converted Underdog.......2001-06-12

I picked this book up in HK as I was attracted to the author's name, and I felt like a "worky-type-read" on the flight back to Singapore.

I am pleased to say that the book did not deliver a formal set of rules and regulations; there's none of the usual "stuffy-academia-business-values" and what it does offer is some sound advice by a person who's done it or "walked-the-walk" as he refers to in his book.

The 10 steps all make sense, are not mind-boggling and are laid out in an easy-to-understand, fun As with the best managerial books around, you cherry-pick and can apply the principles you like to other business sectors and even everyday life.

I do not know Mr Khan but I will congratulate him on what is in my mind an excellent set of principles and certainly ones that I would encourage others to read and try what-ever their vocation.

I finished it in one session, read it all again and have passed it onto my wife. What a breath of fresh air!

A converted underdog

Talk about good ideas!.......2001-06-07

Now this man has some good ideas. And I don't just mean for startups and the like. This stuff is excellent advise for your life especially if you are managing other people. I especially like the fact that the writer puts his money where his mouth is. His advise is given through personal experience and with examples to illustrate. He then gives you a list of excercises to do to practice his methods and become proficient at them. The book is written in a lighthearted manner and is an easy read. At the same time I belive it is a must for any executive/manager/employer if he wants to get the most out of his people, his firm and his life.

BEST OF ALL: THE PROCEEDS FROM THIS BOOK GO TO CHARITY. So I did not feel guilty spending money on it. I read it. I made the members of my family read it and recommend it to all my friends. I have only have written one other review in my life and that was to tell people to avoid a particularly disappointing book. Never thought I would find something so inspiring as to recommend it to people.

A useful book.......2001-05-26

This is a really good effort. I enjoyed reading the exercises, and I was pleased that there is finally something relevant to me here in Hong Kong.

The business plan section was the best section, followed by the idea number 9.

Its so easy to get negative - this is just as silly as being too positive during the boom of the internet. Mr. Khan reminds us of the basics, and unlike one of the previous reviewers, I can say that he is respected for being a straight talker in this part of the world.

Readers of this book will be interested to note that all proceeds of the book are for the Karma Trust - another reason why this effort is different from so much that is written out here.

The only thing to be aware of is petty minded reviewers with agenda's that are personal and not professional

The European Community (EC) is the world's second largest multilateral channel for development assistance (after the World Bank). Its combined programmes are the fifth-largest among the 22 Members of the OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC), and EC programmes have grown an average 3.3 per cent annually over the past five years, while the combined effort of DAC countries declined by 4.7 per cent annually. The Community's allocation of resources to lower income countries has not kept pace, however, with the overall growth of the ODA budget over recent years.

EC programmes operate within a complex organisation and management structure, and Brussels faces serious challenges of implementation in adapting its operations to achieve agreed development objectives. There have been important steps in the evolution of the European Commission structures: a Common Service has been created to implement co-operation activities for the four Directorates General. But there is still a need to strengthen the capacity of delegations in the field to work fully with partners in advancing local ownership and co-ordination.

The EC has a strong role to play in improving the coherence of policies affecting developing countries. The report analyses this question in fields such as agriculture, trade, fisheries agreements and Community fishing fleet subsidies. Co-ordination with other donors also seems to be improving, which bodes well for better overall partnerships between donors and partner countries.
