Vector Autoregressive (VAR) models have become one of the dominant tools for the empirical analysis of macroeconomic time series. Sometimes the flexibility of VAR models leads to overparameterized models, making accurate estimates of impulse responses and forecasts difficult. This book introduces a variety of data-based model reduction methods and provides a detailed investigation of different reduction strategies in the context of popular VAR modelling classes, including stationary, cointegrated and structural VAR models. VAR practitioners benefit from guidelines being developed for using model reduction in applied work. The use of different reduction techniques is illustrated by means of empirical models for US monetary policy shocks and a structural vector error correction model of the German labor market.

This book is a must for anyone who is a consultant or is thinking of becomming a consultant. I have been a successful consultant for 16 years and still learned quite a bit.

The author takes a down-to-earth practical approach to starting and running a consulting business. She requires the reader to ask himself hard questions about their business plans and provides excellent advice on how to evaluate and implement those plans.

The author has obviously been-there-and-done-that.

Ms. Alexander provides a great source of help with her PharmRepSelect book and CDs. I read a couple of books on the subject and found the PharmRepSelect Interview Insight discs to be tremendously helpful. I combined several books in my mission of getting a job in this field. For under a hundred dollars, I feel that I got the best info available. It's like hiring an interview consultant; hours and hours of help. I listened to mock interviews and practiced my techniques. I learned how to phrase my answers more precisely and sound very professional, which was the key in doing well on my interviews. I recommend this unique package to everyone interviewing for a sales job. Five stars!

PharmRepSelect landed me the job of my dreams. PharmRepSelect is written by an expert in the field that actually knows how to communicate information that will keep you from giving up! The real reason PharmRepSelect is different and better then the other books on the same subject is that it gives Encouragement. This book was not what I expected at all. I thought the information was very general and there were far too many pages devoted to answering questions (where you fill in the blanks) and not enough real information provided by the author.

PharmRepSelect audio book condenses all the information about getting a job in pharma sales in about 65 minutes, it explains what the job is and how to prepare for the interview and includes some business quotes that gave me food for thought. I personally like listening to the author of the book read their own material, because they understand just the point they are making and in so doing, make it easy to learn. I don't know of any other experts on getting a job in pharma sales and interview techniques that have recorded mock interviews on an interview CD so I was anxious to listen to this book. I agree with the corporate recruiter that suggests to all their candidates to learn this information and demonstrate these techniques before interviewing. I found this audio book an easy way to get great information!

Don't waste your money.......2007-03-08

This CD was a total waste of time and money. I learned nothing. It also was not very profesionally done. It sounded like it was recorded in a back room somewhere. You could here the author flipping pages, pausing and and stumbling when she lost her place. DON"T WASTE YOUR MONEY!

Hard to find , but worth the trouble. Lisa Alexander's PharmRepSelect audio book CD is the condensed version of her book. Lisa , very naturally, reads her story about the pharmaceutical sales industry, without some of the anecdotes that make her book so enjoyable; but she has managed to keep all of the important technical information. Lisa explains interview techniques effortlessly and allows us to listen to a real manager's point of view. All of the motivational quotes used in the book are included on the audio CD and the flow of the seventy minute CD makes it easy to listen to. I recommend the paperback book for understanding , her audio book (orange CD) for re-enforcement and her Interview Insight CD (blue CD) for copying successful techniques. Interview Insight (blue CD) is really good for experienced sales people or career changers, that find themselves interviewing again, like me. My only complaint is that these CDs and book are hard to find. After a recommendation from a Recruiter friend to go listen to these so I could polish up, it was a a bear to find them. Just look up Lisa Alexander, or PharmRepSelect or Interview Insight, however you find these helpful CDs-just be glad you did.It made my interviewing much easier and successful.

Mostly solid advice........2002-09-03

Brock entertains the long-standing notion that hard work and prudent planning lead to eventual success. As a person who considers himself to be non-religious, and a strong advocate that religion is not a necessity to build character and long-term happiness, I never-the-less thoroughly enjoyed reading about his viewpoints on fundamental principles for living.

The one caution that I would offer to readers, is they take his advice on student loans and never-ending abundance, with a grain of salt. Yes, it is advisable to reduce student loans to a minimum. However, taking out a substantial amount of student loans is not necessarily a bad idea. For most individuals (not those in the authors income bracket, or most of the clients that he deals with), it is extremely hard to get through a doctorate program (let alone a bachelor's program at a first tier school), without doing so. In this case, the value of taking out student loans and acquiring further education clearly outweighs the ability to choose a risk-seeking career. After all, it is an extremely small percentage of people who are successful as an entrepreneur, as opposed to those who seek a more stable career, requiring higher education. I have had experience in both and can vouch for the fact that in specific industries, such as financial services, you need to know key people, to be successful. No matter how much the industry tries to reject this notion, it is fact.

To address the second issue, it is fundamentally obvious that the earth's resources are limited, a view that Brock admittedly looks over. Responsibility necessitates conservation.

The book for the most part is fantastic; however, it does offer an extremely Republican viewpoint.

This is the most complete book on personal financial management ever published, it is just that simple!

There is only one caution I would set forth, successful individuals don't become successful without consulting experts, this book does not replace the guidence an advisor provides but, it is a great starting point for those looking to enhance their knowledge base. I have been known to recommend this book quite frequently to my own clients.

Keep in mind, you don't know what you don't know until someone tells you something you don't know.

Yes, I agree -- this is a "must read" book. It covers many aspects of finance, but realizes that the main aspect is psychological. No, it is not a psychology treatise, but it helps point in the right directions. The author has been in the same position that many of his readers are. Take a look at it. You can probably find a copy at your local library or via inter-library loan.

Little do you know, as you check on the price of cattle futures in Bolivia, that you have Jim Clark to thank for this wonderful research tool and time waster. Clark didn't invent the Internet (that was the Pentagon, looking for an inscrutable way to transmit classified information--or Al Gore, if you can believe him) or even the World Wide Web (that was a Swiss researcher named Tim Berners-Lee). Nor did he invent the first Web browser with a graphical interface; that was a pair of University of Illinois computer geeks named Marc Andreessen and Eric Bina. Good story, shame about the author.......2001-06-17

I found the book to be a reasonably enjoyable read, however I must say that the author's high opinion of himself seems to shine through on almost every page and really put me off. We don't want to know about his boats, wealth, etc... just the story would do.

I read a different version, and the cover had just him on the front with a really self satisfying grin. And there were NO photos in the book to relate the story to!

Jim Clark offers an adventurous account of the birth and volatile life of Netscape Communications Corp., the company that produced the Web browser that helped make the Internet a household tool. If the rags-to-riches dot-com start-up story has become cliché, bear in mind that when Netscape Navigator arrived on the market, the Internet was still largely the semi-private domain of a few academic oddballs. Due to the seminal role that Netscape played in turning the Internet into the omnipresent force that it is today, Clark's book does indeed represent an important first draft of history. The key phrase, of course, is first draft. If nothing else, Clark is a salesman and a promoter, and his goal here is to promote Netscape's version of history - a particularly important goal at a time when the U.S. courts are weighing the fate of the company's arch nemesis, Microsoft. Nevertheless, future historians will use this book in cobbling together the true tale of the Internet's origins, as well as the genesis of the stock mania of the late 1990s. Rivals Larry Ellison's ego.......2001-02-09

Fascinating story- especially from the founder himself rather than someone who 'thinks' he knows how it started. Interesting to read all the behind-the-scenes politics behind the sucesses.

Some DOT COM'S are failing not because of a lack of technology or ideas, but the lack of competent people and realistic vision to shape a releasable, quality product. You are not a "Senior" if you've worked 2 years.......

I would have reviewed this higher if there was more content on the AOL merger (Jim's true feelings) and included an epilogue of the dot coms that he and Marc are involved in right now. A bridge from the beginnings to the future would have made this book seem more complete.

Aside: look at the quality Netscape 6 now that the leadership has changed today!

An entertaining story about the start-up of Netscape.......2001-01-18

Clark entertains us with his remarkable story about the start-up of Netscape. I liked his garage stories with the young programers he hires that play foot hockey and eat pizza during breaktime. Clark almost admits being narcacistic. No doubt, this man has a huge ego! But that's one of the entertaining parts of the book. I would have liked to have learned more about Andreeson, his chief programer and inventor of Mosaic. But Clark is so caught up with himself, he doesn't think to waste time expanding about others. But once again, his ego makes the book entertaining. To give him credit, he has a great nose for business. He knows how to treat his people and take advantage of new ideas. A real pionneer in the technology age.
