Customer Reviews:
The Power of the Machine.......2006-12-06
This is a compilation of academic papers not intended for the lay reader.
The numerous embedded citations are distracting. It is written in sociological jargon rather than English. With hundreds of heavily referenced ideas, there are a few nuggets of wisdom, but these are painfully hard to unearth.
A challenging book..........2006-07-19
This book is challenging in two main ways.
1) It challenges the dominant worldview about the nature of material and energetic exchange enabled by the global economy, and the role of modern free markets and industrialization in perpetuating and worsening global historical inequalities.
Both the global benefactors (in centers) and the direct victims (in peripheries) of this process are blind to its true nature because our historical frame of discourse about exchange obscures the realities of global resource "exchange"--a word which in itself presumes an equal trade of tit for tat. In this sense, we are all victims of "the machine"--The Matrix style--where people in global peripheries (from where high-quality resources are extracted) as subjected to exploitation at the hands hands of people in global centers (to where the resources go).
Hornborg uses the machine as a means of examining and critiquing industrialization as a process of converting high quality matter/energy into low-quality, but high-priced products. Because these are high-entropy products, they require much more material/energetic inputs in order to operate and sustain them. Thus, they require "feeding," and that is the purpose of peole in global centers. Like that quote from "Fight Club"--"The things you own end up owning you." In a sense, "machines" take on a life of their own as they have power over us and we literally worship them as inherently "productive."
I don't think Hornborg is a luddite--technology isn't inherently evil. It is more a problem of concentration and distribution. However, unless we reach an enlightened position about the true nature of industrialization and global resource transfer, machines will continue to own us, and may push us toward the brink of self-destruction.
2) The book also challenges the reader. Hornborg makes the excuse early on that it is inherently challenging because it aims to construct a whole new worldview to replace the reader's current worldview. This is partially true. However the book is also challenging because how, and for whom, it is written. It is NOT an easy read. It is fairly non-linear, uses many terms that will be obscure to anyone outside of the many fields from which Hornborg draws. He doesn't include a glossary or define many of the technical words he uses, which is a big no no IMO. So keep a dictionary close by. Be patient and be prepared to work hard to extract meaning from what he writes--it is often like piecing together a puzzle where no single part makes much sense until you can gain a sense of the total image. In the end, I think the struggle is worth it--it is actually a very intuitive and even visual argument. I can see an animated diagram in my head that embodies his argument.
But I also think he COULD have written it to be more accessible--there are many sentences that could easily be unpacked. Overall, it might have made the book 100 pages longer, but overall a much smoother read.
I hope his argument gains steam and more people start writing in this vein (albeit more accessibly). The implications are vast, especially among all the trendy and often-meaningless talk about "sustainability."
An outstanding book.......2002-01-10
Before reading this book, I had read several first-rate books dealing with environmental issues; books that tended to approach the subject from a biological (ecological) point of view. Although they were very useful and I learned a lot from them, I thought that they largely overlooked human/social factors, or treated them superficially. I intuitively felt that any analysis of sustainability (or whatever you want to call it) that was not also firmly based in the social sciences and the humanities was incomplete. In short, I decided to keep looking.
I first encountered Alf Hornborg in a recent issue of an academic journal devoted to biosemiotics. The content and clarity of his article there so impressed me that I searched for more information about him on the Internet, discovered that he had written this book, and took the chance of ordering it. The book is all I had hoped for, and then some. I believe this author has seen more deeply into our environmental predicament than anyone I have yet encountered.
Hornborg's main thesis, as stated in the introduction, is that we are "caught in a collective illusion about the nature of modern technology. We do not recognize that what ultimately keeps our machines running are global terms of trade. The power of the machine is not _of_ the machine, but of the asymmetric structures of exchange of which it is an expression."
He goes on to state:
"My argument represents a conjunction of perspectives from the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. It is polemical in relation to most conventional discourse on 'sustainable development,' ecological economics, and similar topics in suggesting that solutions to our ecological predicament will have to be more profound and radical than is usually envisioned in the environmental debate. I argue for a _defamiliarization_ of our conventional conceptions of technology and development, that is, a fundamental distancing from the cultural categories through which the modern economic system operates, and in terms of which most policy negotiations are conducted. Above all, I argue that we must recognize the global, _distributional_ aspects of development, technology, and environmental issues. The intellectual ancestry of these ideas can be traced to the underexplored interfaces between world system theory, political ecology, ecological economics, economic anthropology, fetishism theory, and semiotics."
The heart of the book, in my opinion, is in chapters 8 through 11. Chapters 9 and 10 are particularly outstanding. Rather than try to summarize the material, which would be hard to do in this brief space, I will close with some brief excerpts from chapter 10, which should impart some of the flavor of what is here:
"Romanticist critiques of Western rationality have a long history, but studies in human ecology seem now to be in a position to articulate a _rational_ critique of that rationality. The contextualist position is not romanticism or mysticism but a sober recognition of the limitations of totalizing institutions and knowledge systems. Because of the sheer complexity and specificity of ecosystemic interrelationships and fluctuations, it is not unreasonable to expect that optimal strategies for sustainable resource management are generally best defined by local practitioners with close and long-term experience of these specificities, and with special stakes in the outcome. Yet it is clear that actual management strategies are today generally informed by entirely different sets of conditions."
...
"Metaphor is a mode of knowing that positions the human subject by _evoking_ non-objectifiable inner states associated with specific forms of practice. The significance of metaphor for the contextualist argument thus lies in its capacity to activate tacit, practical knowledge based on experience of highly specific, local conditions. This position accommodates Ingold's proposition that cultural constructions of the environment are secondary to practical action ('the practitioner's way of knowing'), while recognizing the capacity of such constructions to codify and reinforce a specific, ecological _habitus_, not least in the transmission of such dispositions between generations. A metaphorical 'cognized model' does not so much encode ecological information as provide 'cues' for the activation of specific, practical repertoires appropriated in the context of action."
...
"The discussion on 'traditional ecological knowledge' and 'traditional resource management' is thus intrinsically paradoxical to the extent that it hopes for an appropriation and application of local knowledge by the very modernist framework by which such knowledge is continually being eclipsed. In advocating what he calls 'epistemological decentralization,' Banuri recognizes that an increasing contextuality of knowledge will render 'the expert, trained in universal sciences, an anachronism.' Clearly, an 'expert' in an abstractly conceived field of 'local knowledge' is a contradiction in terms. But this paradox, of course, is a pervasive aspect of the anthropological condition. We can engage in a meta-discourse on knowledge, but in terms of concrete expertise we can at best become awkward apprentices to specific, local practitioners.
Rather than approach indigenous knowledge as another 'resource' to be tapped, ecological anthropology might concentrate on the sociocultural contexts that allow ecologically sensitive knowledge systems to evolve and persist over time. There are reasons to believe that the best conditions for such local calibrations occur precisely when they are _not_ being subjected to attempts at encompassment by totalizing frameworks of one kind or another. In recognizing implicit and inextricable local meanings as the very stuff of ecological resilience, a critical inquiry into human ecology might begin to confront the agents of destruction by modifying its own ambition to encompass."

Out of Date and Too basic.......2007-06-14
This book offers very basic theory and not enough practical examples. Plus it's outdated (early 90s). I read through some parts and skimmed through most and found I was amazed by how simple the theories are.
If you have had critical thinking skills, this book is unnecessary, because you'll figure out everything this book offers on your own.
For School.......2003-03-24
I had to buy this for a university class. Just didn't get much out of it. Maybe the book could be taught a little better. It just didn't give me anything new aka it reconfirms common sense.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Source of Information.......2006-08-20
I purchased the book on the grounds that I needed information about the hiring process and the steps it takes to gain employment with the FBI. In my opinion there should not be any prep books or material for the job, either you have what it takes to make it or you don't. This book gave me what I needed to know so that I was informed about how hiring decisions were made and what steps the agency takes in selecting candidates. I wish all who purchase this book the best of luck and to just remember that you have to live up to a lot to be part of the FBI.
Great reference, but in need of a revision.......2006-05-30
This book is a wonderful backgrounder on the FBI, its history, and how things work within the agency. The list of field offices and the areas they cover was alone worth the cost of the book. The interview hints were sparce, but very applicable. The problem is the application process has changed in some pretty dramatic ways since this book was published. The FBI now uses on-line applications and the application form has been changed. The needs and focus of the Bureau have also changed since 9/11
Yes, this book was helpful. But if you are interested in applying to the FBI, contact the Applicant Coordinator in your local field office and search the web for a law enforcement employment message board to get the latest news in the world of FBI hiring.
Great book.......2005-10-25
Great author, too. I had him as a Criminal Justice professor at Grand Valley State University. He was an adjunct professor there for a couple of years. Very nice, very knowledgeable. This book is a good reference and starting point. Sure, most of the information is available on the Internet, but why go through all the trouble of finding it when it can all be at your fingertips?
Not much info here........2005-09-15
I thought that this would be a good book to help me prepare for the phase 1 testing and what else is to come. Most of the recomendations are just common sense and all of the information was redily available on the internet for free.
FBI Minature Golf.......2005-08-31
We Hope in a future edition, that the author does not forget the path John Douglas (Ret.FBI: BSU) followed to finally arrive at Quantico. Miniture Golf Instructor. Yes now it can be told! Johns career all started at the end; if you will. Yep! at the end of McChord Air Force Base in Parkland Washington. At the venerable "Parkland Mini Putt" miniture golf course. I'll save the details for John himself to fill in, as he's kinda shy about his handicap.

The goal of this book is to make formulas easy to understand and use. This was done by removing symbols whenever possible and instead show the nesessary step. In most cases only one element, at a time, of an equation has been illustrated, so that you can easily follow the steps taken. Whenever a calcultor is used it even tells you what buttons to push.
You will delighted to know how easy it is to work a math problem that in the past seemed to difficult. Check out the table of contents and you will see that this book address most of the areas in your life that requires a math formula or special number you need.
Customer Reviews:
Lots and lots of information.......2004-04-12
There is a great deal of useful information packed into this book.
I haven't looked at any other books of this type, so I have no basis for comparison. That said, this book may not be sufficiently user friendly for those who are truly math phobic. The author gets down to business and is not chatty. So, there isn't a great deal of "hand holding" provided in this book.
But, I suspect that most people will be able to find the information they need in this book and successfully solve their math problems.
Retired Engineer.......2000-09-16
Everyone thinks Engineers know everything. Think again! This book is useful for reference and learning new things. I can't begin to list all the important formulas I have forgotten since College. This book makes complicated things simple and easy to remember. I think this book is an excellent purchase for anyone. It even helped me with my taxes!
This is a must buy.

Customer Reviews:
Technique but no cookie.......2007-10-19
As someone who has spent over a decade on the Internet, I understand the fundamentals of the building of a tool or the utilization of a tool that can be used to generate money online. If you understand this too, then skip this one.
This book is for the complete novice. BUT if that novice buys it, they will regret it because they will spend hours and hours toiling to get to an expert level of understanding on how to build and utilize a system such as this and then be faced with the same outcome I was.
There is absolutely no recommendation for products and services that do well in this environment. All of the check copies posted in the book were dated from 2005 which most folks know was the hay-day of the search marketplace and literally was the first year in existence for the pay-per-click marketplace. Today's marketplace, especially in the affiliate realm, is extremely more competitive largely because of books like this. There was no effort expended in addressing this competitive pressure and the resulting gap reduction between affiliate commission and PPC bids.
At the end of the day, folks, there are no easy millions. You must be ahead of a trend like Mr. Borelli, to exploit such an opportunity. Once the rest of the world has caught up, the only thing you can hope to do is ... you guessed it ... sell a book to teach others how to do it.
Basic tools for the online gold rush.......2007-09-06
My experience was similar to that of "gordo the lordo." Plenty of clicks but just a few orders. Getting clicks isn't hard. What kind of clicks? That's the $1,000,000 question.
As a search engine advertiser, your task is to capture the clicks of consumers who have made a buying decision or are very close. These clicks will make money for you. The clicks of people who are "just browsing" will cost you money. You have to be a student of online search behavior.
You capture money-making clicks by finding highly relevant keywords and writing focused ads. How hard can it be? Get your ads up and running, tweak them, and watch the money roll in. You only need basic English skills and common sense. A degree in advertising or English is not going to help.
I would encourage anyone to try it because you may discover that you have the knack. By spending $500 or so, you should be able to get an idea how well you might do. Don't make the mistake I made, which was to let my ads capture several hundred clicks without getting any orders. I kept thinking "the orders will kick in." They didn't. Stop your ads after 200-300 clicks and wait for results. (Even 50 clicks are too many with retail sites.) You can either tweak the ad (if it's close to break-even) or abandon it and try something else. Tweaking wouldn't have helped my ads, which earned pennies for every dollar spent on clicks.
You are playing the keyword market on Google. Some keywords sell for $20 per click and more. Search engine advertisers don't get caught up in keyword "bubbles." They are only after potent "value" keywords that sell for 25 cents or less.
The keyword market is like a gold rush. Everywhere you look the ground is torn up by hordes of stampeding prospectors. You wander far and wide hoping to find a stone that hasn't been turned. How many thousands of other guys are out there trying the same thing? Good luck.
You never know. You might have the knack. Affiliate Millions gives you everything you need to know to get started. When I joined my first affiliate program and set up my first ads, I had the book open and followed it not step-by-step but word-for-word. It's just the kind of "excruciating" detail a beginner needs.
Mr. Borelli explains how to evaluate the earnings potential of an affiliate program. The profit, or course, depends on your revenue per click. An adgroup for $20 books may not be the way to go.
Should you actually make money, there is a chapter on campaign finance. You have to manage your cash flow to optimize performance. If another book on online advertising has this kind of chapter, I haven't seen it.
Mr. Borelli has set up the Affiliate Millions website for "prospectors." The only item listed for sale is the book. There is a free monthly newsletter. There are no ads. Mr. Borelli answers questions on the site's discussion board. If you are at all familiar with the "get rich online" racket you know how exceptional this is. Such sites are usually crammed with ads and have little useful information.
Mr. Borelli's advice is a bit sketchy and vague. That's because it has to be. If Mr. Borelli were to disclose his winning formula, everyone would copy him and he would be out of business within hours. All he can do is point people in right direction. Within that proviso, he provides clear and valuable information.
Mr. Borelli makes no promises that prospectors will get rich. He merely suggests that it is possible. He ends the opening chapter with "Take it step-by-step and read the chapters that follow, and you'll stand a good chance of becoming an Affiliate Millionaire yourself." If he starts the book by saying your chances are practically nil, no one will continue reading.
Like "gordo," I'm amazed that anyone could make millions at this. A million dollars in a year is $2,700 a day. You would have to consider yourself pretty successful with $2,700 a day in SALES, never mind commissions. You would have to strike it rich with multiple million-dollar campaigns. You would have to come up with new ones all the time.
Think of the millions in revenue Mr. Borelli is generating for the companies he advertises for. They should throw a party for him.
Didn't work for me.......2007-08-21
I tried the principles in this book. I set up some ads for a variety of products and different companies through Commission Junction and was, at first, delighted that I was getting a good amount of clicks. I was confident the ads were good enough because of some experience I've had in the past writing copy.
However, after over 250 clicks to major websites that boasted a large earnings per click, I got one sale and a large $ loss. The ads were good enough to catch the people's attention, but no one was buying.
I think this is a tough way to go at it. A website might be the better way to go. I am amazed that anyone could make any money doing this, never mind millions.
Direct and Immediately Useful.......2007-07-24
I was seeking a detailed, practical and thorough "how-to" approach to build internet-based revenue. This book filled the bill. It covered all key facets of the approach - particularly helpful for a layperson - as well as for someone with web-based experience (as am I). I have yet to test the specific recommendations. The book was solid.
Basic start but could leave you broke.........2007-07-12
Its true that money can be made by signing up for affiliate programs and marketing them on pay per click search engines. However, its possible to lose a great deal of money and this book doesn't do a good enough job helping people calculate the risks. For example, the author indicates he markets Amazon products. Amazon on its basic associate program pays 4%. A $20.00 book pays a comission of .80 cents. But in pay per click advertising a marketer can pay 30, 40 cents and even a dollar depending on the keywords. In a test marketing the new Harry Potter book (book 5) I spent over 9.00 in ppc ads that resulted in 4 sales. The click thru to sale was 13%... which isn't bad. The point is, I earned only about $2, but spent over $9.00 to earn it (a loss of $7.00). The author doesn't explain how to choose affiliate programs in terms of cost vs. payoff. Anyone who reads this book will get some basic information, but before spending money on ppc advertising they'd be better off buying The Ultimate Guide to Google Adwords which does a better job explaining keywords, writing effective ads and managing campaigns.

Customer Reviews:
It gets to the point!.......2001-02-02

NOT WORTH TEN BUCKS.......2000-11-19
All this book tells you is that in order to make money you have to work hard and smart - that's it! Over and over and over again. He never tells us HOW. A big turn-off was at the end of his book where he tells us to promote him on radio shows for bookings, meetings, etc. so he can help US - but, come on folks, who is Mr. Billac kidding? HE WROTE THE BOOK TO SELL THE BOOK, PROMOTE HIMSELF, AND MAKE "HIMSELF" MONEY - NOT US! I was thoroughly disappointed and if, under "how do you rate this book" I could have placed a "ZERO", I would have.

Become an Internet Millionaire.......2000-06-14
This book is for anyone that is curious ( ind a general way)about how network marketing works. The book concentrates more on the network marketing aspects than the featured topic of Skybiz 2000. It's an interesting book for those people who are fed up with their same old job. If you are interested in a new way to make money this book gives you a general option. The only element really missing from this book is substance. Pete has an engaging style and gets you excited about the posibilities but when you wade through the excitement you are left wondering what Skybiz and the book are really about.

Book Description
Financial services with global reach are becoming ever more important in the conduct and organization of the trade and investment of nations, and currencies that lack international standing lose out in this business. The result of financial development has been destabilizing currency and portfolio substitution -- in favour of international currencies and against local ones. This book analyses formal approaches to overcoming monetary divisions within countries and within integrating regions, focusing on the consequences of monetary union for trade among union members and their financial development and stability. The authors discuss hard pegs such as those attempted by the currency board of Argentina, outright dollarization, such as in Ecuador, and multilateral monetary union, as in Europe, the least reversible form of monetary union and the most powerful elixir of financial integration and trade. The political classes and central banks in most countries have been reluctant to admit the market- and technology-driven forces of currency consolidation, much less yield to them. International financial institutions too are still in the habit of proffering advice about national monetary and exchange-rate policies on the assumption that getting rid of both is not even an option. Emerging-market countries, in particular, have to choose between retaining what independent monetary means they still have -- and can safely use in the presence of widespread liability dollarization and currency mismatches -- and formally replacing the domestic with an international currency to reduce exposure to debilitating financial crises. In concrete investigations of this choice, this volume shows that monetary union deserves a much more sympathetic hearing.
