I have not yet read through the entire book but it explores many novel ideas. The author did a very good job in bring the text down to everyones level. There is some information that is just not necessary in the book but other than that it is very good.

There are countless examples of people who have worked and slaved for years in a tunnel vision quest to be top dog ... only to get there and after a while just walk out of a life they once desired like nothing else. Sometimes they say a change of heart did it ... but the psychology of success and the constant demand and expectations of others over time tips the scales to a real fear of failure. Many people prefer to go out with a bang than to fade away a has-been. An intriguing look that begs the question if success really does make one happy.

When I thought I just had it.......2006-03-20

When I started reading the first few chapters, it was like the author was speaking directly to me, knowing what goes on inside my head. Actually, he even made me realize some things I never did myself. The only thing that hurt about this book is the author's writing style and his habit of using superfluous words. I mean when you have to run to a dictionary and back ten times in one chapter, it takes your mind off from the topic. The book is good if you want to understand the problem, but there aren't any real remedies inside this book. Until the very end, we were still discussing the problem and not the cure. Even in the last two chapters there are just more details about the problem yet no actual remedies.

This is a good book and if you're suffering from a burnout and you should get this book because it's a good first step!

Dr. Berglas has written an exceptional book that I would recommend to those who are facing workplace issues such as burnout and "Isn't there more than this?" questioning. While I believe his research is relevant for all audiences - I would highly recommend it for people in large corporate settings - as well as those in supervisory roles. Personally, I picked up the book hoping to find some answers regarding the "dead ends" and the boredom I was starting to feel at my corporate job - and I found Dr. Berglas' book to be insightful and solutions-oriented for people like me... While the book is well-researched and deals with complex issues, it is clear and concise and should be easily understandable for all audiences to grasp... If this book is calling out to you for some reason, I highly recommend you read it.

Excellent contents - Not easy to apply.......2002-04-28

This book deals with the phenomenon of people who have or have had extraordinary succesful careers and nevertheless found themselves to be extremely unhappy - partially up to the point of self-destruction. This also defines the audience for this book: the people described above or those who take a keen interest in such people.

The book has been written by an adjunct faculty member at Harvard Medical school. The academic level is - as far as I can judge - impeccable. The author quotes on many occasions from actual patient-cases which are common enough that many a reader will recognize some of his or her own headaches. One notices that an effort has been made to write a book that is accessible to the general public. However, the book does maintain a certain academic tone that will be off-putting to some people. There are no exercises, questionaires, or the like that would involve the reader a bit more with the subject matter.

Whoever thinks that reading this book and applying a few quick-fix exercises here and mental readjustments there is going to enable them to continue like before, just happier, is extremely mistaken. Dr. Berglas points out that a lot of the misery discussed is a direct result of some deeply engrained characteristics of our culture. For most people, following up on Dr. Berglas' suggestions will imply a drastic (but doable) change in lifestyle.

Lilith - The Ultimate Female Rebel.......2005-10-28

I really enjoyed reading this book by Deborah Grenn-Scott. I like the jewish folklore of Lilith, the first woman, before Eve. It's nice to hear of the story...the first woman, equal to a man, who demands to be on top. Women and girls need to have a role model for female power and independence and the story of Lilith fits perfectly. I first heard the story through Joan Borysenko rendition of it in her CD Album "A Woman's Retreat".

Who is Lilith, anyway? Lilith is the symbol of independent, rebellious, sexy, passionate, and powerful womanhood. She's Adam's first wife, according to the Ben Sira. Lilith is Adam's equal and they fight over which position to have sex. Lilith demands to be on top and Adam refuses her. Adam claims that she is only fit to be on the bottom. Then Lilith takes off and leaves the Garden of Eden to have outrageous sex orgies with demons. Adam is then upset and demands that God return Lilith to the Garden. She's so bold...she even tells God to get lost. God then tells Adam that he has to make him a second wife...Eve. One day, Lilith returns to the Garden and finds she has been ousted and all hell breaks loose.

Using Lilith as an archetype, women and girls can get in touch with their fierce and wild side. It's okay to not be a "nice girl". It's even better if you have some real bitch in you. The Lilith archetype activated in a woman says "I'm gonna do whatever the hell I wanna do...f&*K u. If you are a woman and you need some help to break out of the "nice girl" syndrome...read this book.

As the parent of a 12-year-old daughter, I was very pleased to be able to turn to this fabulous book to help alex grapple with some of her questions about why the world works in sometimes- mysterious ways when it comes to interactions between girls and boys, men and women. While no author can come up with all the explanations, Lilith's Fire provides an important start to the questioning process.

This book's exuberance is immediately evident from the cover, with its photo of a joyous figure leaping in front of a sunrise. The book contains inspiring stories and practical how-to's for cultivating a deep appreciation for life.

I learned about the author from a friend in England who is her coaching client. Van Meter is a psychotherapist and personal coach, so she not only writes about life passion, she helps other people find and cultivate their own.

I particularly resonated to it because I was raised to keep a low profile and not attract attention to myself, and then here comes this book that advocates living with zest and pleasure, and trusting your own internal drummer.

It would be a great handbook for parents who want to nurture their kids' individuality, for graduates who need encouragement to follow their hearts, for couples who want to rekindle their passionate love. The book asks and answers fundamental questions about passion. Are we all born with it? How do we lose it? How can we get it back?

I liked the accessible and informal writing style, and also the quotes from philosophers, poets, and writers from several centuries, all supporting the idea of passionate, appreciative living.

Worst business book ever - even when I got it as a gift........2003-02-20

I'm so embarrassed my friend gave me this book as a gift as I get ready to launch my own company that I want to return his money. This book is written like a term paper by an inexperienced student who leveraged the Harvard name. It was a worthless waste of my time to even scan it.

Instead I would recommend the book by the founder of Subway - Start Small, Finish Big: 15 Key Lessons to Start--and Run--Your Own Successful Business by Fred DeLuca, John P. Hayes.

I would have never looked at this book before i needed it for class, but it is a good source for preparing for any type of public speaking occasion. It is truly helpful. The text has examples and the examples of speeches are usually also in video form on the CD's that come with the text. Also, there are CD's so that you can listen to the chapter (in your car) for example. I personally read each chapter and used the CD's for extra review... Good source for Public Speaking classes, or preparing for any type of presentation.

A necessary reference guide........2003-06-05

How would you hendle the death of a loved one? For me, until I read this book, I wouldn't have had a clue! I think this book makes sense for anyone who is going through the financial transition that death brings to survivors but also to anyone who wants to be prepared for the event. Think about it...we will all eventually have to face this, why not be prepared? This book covers more details than I would have thought of, and I work in the financial industry. I think a major plus to this book is that is gives definitions, addresses, phone numbers, web addresses, etc... of all the things and places you will need to know about. I would highly recommed this publication.

A necessary Guide for survivors ........2003-05-17

If your loved dies suddenly or you know its coming this is the essential book to read about handing the situation.

A compact guide on what to do when and how. It brings together in one easy to read and understand format the information you will need immediately after a death and later on.

This is a book to have on hand as you would have a dictionary.

When my mother died I found it was dificult to get the information I needed. Laywers can be very expensive. If I had this book it would have saved my time and money.

Practical.......2003-03-17

Although the book origionally seemed small for the price I discovered that it had a lot of information. It covered everything from how to handle my husband's car lease to estate processing and identity theft. It was also well written and had a easy to follow format.

Filling the gaps.......2004-09-10

This work fills a void in African American and general U. S. History. It is important for the general public, not just academia. Business success has became a negative image for too many youths, and this work shows that African Americans have always been successful within the capitalist system as entrepreurs, not merely consumers. It also demonstrates how African Americans have been a vital part of the economic development of the nation!

A missing part of American History.......2002-10-15

This book is covers the development of African-American Business from The Colonial times to the present. It covers corporations, partnerships, banks and various other enterprises. You will enjoy this book.

A work that is needed.......1998-09-19

This book traces the development of black enterprise in America. It is a return to the days when communities, including those in the tradition of black Americans, placed enterprise at the very center of their activity. It also reminds us of the blue-print for success in America. More importantly, it is a return to scholarship which concentrates on the importance of self-help, enterprise building and the ability to think and act like a free person. Since the early 1960s, studies of failure have dominated literature on black Americans. This book returns us to literature which examine how people actually created economic stability in hostile situations. It also reminds us that the excellent literature on present day immigrant groups share a lot in common with the ealry literature on black Americans. A great piece of scholarship. It is also instructive to note that Madam Walker, Booker T. Washington, and Mr. Johnson are pictured on the cover. This denotes a time which entrepreneurs, rather than politicians and ministers, were the most important leaders in the black community.
