Book Description
The outline of modern macroeconomics took shape in Britain in the early nineteenth century thanks, in part, to David Ricardo, one of the most influential economists of the time. Britain was challenged by monetary inflation, industrial unemployment and the loss of jobs abroad. Ricardo pointed the way forward. As a financier and Member of Parliament, he was well versed in politics and commercial affairs. His expertise is shown by the practicality of his proposals, including the resumption of the gold standard, which was essential given the destabilizing policy of the Bank of England. Ricardo’s expertise appears also in his debate with T. R. Malthus about whether an industrial economy can suffer a prolonged depression. Say’s Law of Markets and the Quantity Theory of Money figure prominently in his works, but not in an extreme form. He was instead a subtle theorist, recognizing the non-neutrality of money, trade depressions and unemployment.
Book Description
Feng shui (pronounced fung shway) is an ancient Chinese practice based on the idea that the auspicious placement and arrangement of buildings, walkways, doors, furniture, plants, and other objects can ensure a good life. Good feng shui allows cosmic energy or chi to flow freely, creating a harmonious environment and improving the health, love life, peace, even prosperity of those who live or work there. By carefully locating and orienting your residence and organizing its interior design to maximize good energy, you can promote success and happiness. In Feng Shui, Angel Thompson, a noted expert, explains how you can make small (or large) changes in your home or office environment to increase the flow of positive energy. Thompson's clear, practical approach provides dozens of helpful tips for making any size and type of space better.
Customer Reviews:
This Book is SO BAD it should be considered a COMIC........1998-12-10
Angel Thompson took a class with Lin Yun (of Yun Lin church fame) and decided she was an expert. That's why her book contradicts itself every third sentence. It's more full of holes than swiss cheese. It's so bad that Ms. Thompson had to call in an AUTHENTIC practitioner to analyze her home because her attempts at "Feng Shui" caused her nothing but grief. And this is the sort of book you would recommend to someone or buy for yourself?
A Feng Shui Favorite.......1998-11-22
Here is a feng shui treasure. Angel Thompson presents an incredible amount of information - it is like a textbook. If you want to learn about the five elements to include color, shapes, uses, meaning, planet etc. etc. well here's your book. I found her explanation of yin/yang to be clear, consise and thought provoking. I finally understand this often misunderstood Eastern concept. Besides giving useful tips for the home, there is also a wealth of info for your career and/or business. The highlight of this book goes beyond the facts presented - Ms. Thompson touches upon the philosophy that is the foundation of feng shui. What a beautiful life impacting message.
Feng Shui, translated into New Age babble.......1997-11-08
I got this book because of only one reason:: while browsing through Amazon.com's myriad menus one boring, listless, evening, I came across a review of this book, which had won one of those "Review of the Month" contests held at Amazon.com.
Okay, so let me be blunt. That review of the book is much better reading than the book itself. This book is written in the usual New Age speak that is full of the sound of mystic references and yet signifying nothing in the end.
Feng Shui is a real living, breathing, way of thinking (or superstition) for many Chinese and other Asians. My mother would always admonish us never to get a house with its front door facing to the West, and she would try to align our beds along a North-South Axis, which would make us into smarter or better or healthier people or something like that. I haven't figured out the part about the beds yet, but I have discovered that a house with the front door facing West can get awfully hot with the sun blazing through the front windows in the afternoons. So, much like the Jews and Muslims not eating pork, there really must be something to Feng Shui after all.
I really hoped that this book would give me some useful insights into life's little rules, such as the ones from my mother, but, instead, this book was just so hard to decipher that I finally gave up.
Rearrange the furniture for your mental health........1996-09-11
No wonder my checkbook hasn't balanced and I've been feeling edgy and crankier than usual. I need to rearrange the furniture, according to author Angel Thompson in her book Feng Shui: How To Achieve the Most Harmonious ARrangement of Your Home and Office. While moving the head of my bed to the north wall of the bedroom (to promote the natural flow of positive energy, which equalizes temperaments) and cleaning my oven (which increases cash flow) didn't seem at first like reasonable solutions, my interest in the subject grew the deeper into the book I moved. Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice based on the idea that the placement and arrangement of buildings, walkways, doors, furniture, plants, mirrors and other objects can ensure harmony in life. Good feng shui encourages cosmic energy (chi) to flow abundantly, creating a balanced environment and improved health, love, peace and prosperity for persons who live or work in the space. Even the color of point on a door can disrupt the flow of chi, with negative results for the dwellers. Thompson presents a wealth of complicated information in an easy to read manner, which when mentally assembled, makes one wonder if there isn't some credence to the philosophy. Feng Shui is the latest New Age element to flow into the mainstream, giving the unenlightened masses a chance to bring old ideas into the new century. I haven't quite figured out how to convince my boss I could be far more creative if I replaced my grungy metal desk with a more stately model fashioned out of walnut. Maybe I'll let him borrow the book

Perhaps a Bit Too Quick?.......2005-04-21
As every business owner knows, one of the most frustrating aspects of being self-employed is finding potential customers and convincing them to buy from you. 138 Quick Ideas is a small book full of suggestions for how to network, track down, and lure customers to your door. They are laid out in a common-sense order, with good examples and straightforward text, making the book accessible to business experts and novices alike.
The only drawback to the book is that most of these ideas are by now well known, and many of them are included in the other reviews you'll see here. Plus, when the title says Quick it means just that - nearly all of these ideas occupy less than a page, so the book reads swiftly. So although I can heartily recommend you read this book, I'm not so sure the retail price is justified.
Idea Generator.......2002-01-01
I have read much of Shenson's work since the late '70s, and still find value in them ('tho he's been dead for many years). His self-proclaimed title of the 'consultant's consultant' has now been assumed by others. But his ideas, such as the listing in this book still serve to provide value in themselves. As a practicing independent consultant,I find the greatest value of this list, however, is as a 'trigger' to thought that causes me to come up with additional ideas. It is for this reason that I rate it so highly.
Many Helpful Marketing Ideas Most Consultants Don't Use!.......2000-07-24
The authors start off by saying, "You can be the most terrific speaker, consultant, attorney, engineer or professional the world has ever seen, but to really succeed, you must successfully sell your services." The key element of this selling is summarized as " . . . to really succeed means to differentiate yourself from others." The authors go on to point out that the massive waves of downsizing are creating much more competition all the time, requiring consultants to improve their marketing continuously.
Here are some examples of the gems in this book:
-- "don't quit marketing" -- many consultants only market when they do not have enough business. You are advised to always spend 15-25 percent of your time in this area.
-- market only to decision-makers -- the gate keepers have to let you in before you can make the sale. Spending time with gate keepers though quickly becomes wasted time.
-- make selling your services your number one task so it always takes priority
-- be seen as an expert in your field based on recent research you have conducted
-- try to market people through the insights you get from your research
-- use wasted time to work on marketing (such as downtime sitting in an airport)
-- whenever you mail your card to someone, include two so one can be shared
-- ask all of your contacts for referrals.
Once you are working on these things, here are some other good ideas:
-- create an environment in which making a referral seems like their idea
-- aim your publicity efforts to generate qualified leads
-- quote fees on a fixed price basis
-- let clients know that you will make them self-sufficient.
One of the good aspects of the book is that it does not seem to have any overtly bad advice in it. Some bits of advice I would question, but it certainly won't get you into trouble.
The main weakness of the book is that the ideas are presented at a summary level. Most people will need more detailed information to be able to implement the concepts. As a starting point, I suggest you read Networlding, Socratic Selling, and Publicity Power(all of which I have also reviewed).
If you do not have a marketing plan for your consulting practice, reading this book will be good background for helping you prepare one.
The key point of this book is to help you overcome your stalled thinking that professionals do not have to market. Good work will be enough. Unless you are already a well-known authority with more demand than you can handle, your good work will only take you so far.
Good luck in finding more clients so you can help more people achieve 2,000 percent solutions!

Customer Reviews:
Much Better Out There.......2004-06-06
I got this book mainly because the second edition was published in 2004 so I thought it would have the most up-to-date information on cover letter writing. Out of this whole book, only essentially the first 15 pages address how to write a cover letter--and this they do poorly. The main advice they give repeatedly is to include in your cover letter those skills and experience that match what your potential employer is looking for. Good advice, but they don't really tell you how to do this without making your cover letter merely a smaller version of your resume. I was really dissappointed with this book and would recommend other sources, even if they are perhaps a bit older.

Customer Reviews:
Women Must Strive Harder For Success, But It is Worth It!.......2005-08-16
This is a good guide for women to everyday success using wisdom in the work force and with your own business. It cultivates the need for helping each other in this time of trials and plane crashes. Zack was an unpopular tax collector who'd grown rich on the poverty of others, as he extorted as much money as possible and kept some for himself. He went to Jericho and climbed up into a tree to have a good sight of the gathering; as a result, he had a complete change of heart and returned home to make things right by giving away all he had collected. Finally, he could have a peaceful heart.
Solomon was reputed to be the wisest of the wise, blessed with incredible wisdom, and he built a glorious temple to which be brought pagan wives. Soon, he was worshipping their gods and lost the peace and joy of his early years on the throne. He ruled over the people ("If a ruler's anger rises against you, do not leave your post' calmness can lay great errors to rest." Bible). He'd had his share of bad days when his servants disobeyed his wishes. Misunderstandings happen, but they can also be corrected.
There is nothing worse than a gossip, 'friend' or otherwise. It is written that "a gossip separates close friends." If you've ever had someone to gossip against you, you know that people just can't resist talking about one another. "True gossip" is never the 'truth.' It is best to keep self-control when others try to gossip, so as not to break up a friendship.
Sometimes, when we've endured a great trial or sickness, we come to the realization that we are here for a purpose. When I had my reprieve from death five years, one person said I was here to bear my testimony. It was a bad doctor who told me I would die then; now it is a bad doctor who did not get me the care I needed for the same serious condition who is letting me expire." We feel life is not fair, but it is -- it's wonderful to be alive and hurt; the pain makes you know you are alive. We were each created for a special purpose, and perhaps mine has been reached. I've certainly had a ball getting involved in city government the past four years. Thanks, Jack.
"And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two." It's not always easy to go that extra mile, but you will find the end result is worth all of the exertion and heat exhaustion. Because I did such on the 4th, I learned on the 5th about my serious medical dilemma and hopefully have found out in time. Had I not walked that mile to Jeff's house and the mile back to the bus stop, I would never have known -- in time.
We are told to 'love your enemies.' That's the last thing I ever thought I would be able to do. It's not easy' it's tough. Even when others lose patience with something we are intent on and erupt in a bad way, we can love them anyway and do our best. One thing I have never been able to do is forgive. We have to learn to forgive or the hurt and insult will fester and cause physical damage to our hearts and soul. We settle for what Dietrich Bonhoeffer called "cheap grace." Jonah was stuck in the belly of a whale and he was spewed out on dry land when he begged for forgiveness for worshipping false idols. It is good to remember that forgiveness is there for the asking.
Todays's world is chuck full of frustration; when you get to the end of your rope and find nowhere else to go, know in your mind and heart that there is always hope. You may not agree with others' attitudes or actions, but treat them with love and respect. It can work miracles. And I need one right about now!
Challenges the status quo, inspiring and definitely a winner.......2005-05-24
Women For Hire job held a job fair in Dallas, TX which I attended and provided free copies of CEO Tory Johnson's latest book to all participants in the breakfast seminar.
I would recommend "Women For Hire's Get-Ahead Guide to Career Success" to any career woman looking to succeed in today's competitive job market. The book is a winner in changing one's mindset critical to any major change in life and serves beyond just the table of valuable content and advise but is also a valuable reference guide in the many phases of a woman's career path.
Above all the book empowers women to to strive to succeed and find joy in their work and still maintain work-life balance. In short it encourages one to evaluate one's current situation and challenge the status quo and map your vision for career success.
A very genuine and sincere effort by Tory Johnson,Robyn Freedman Spizman and the countless women interviewed in the book.
