Book Description
Economist Lance Taylor is an advocate of aggressive government management of developing economies. The models described in this book are are easy to set up and manipulate on microcomputers and should dominate the development debate. Taylor's detailed discussion of structuralist COE models is followed by contributions that take up their application in specific countries.
This collection of work reviews the results of using CGE models since the early 1970s, with an emphasis on models that encompass broad structural factors such as distribution of income and wealth, land tenancy relationships, foreign trade, production, markets, and control of the means of production that are fundamental to the behavior of developing economies.
Chapters explain the macro constraints on India's economic growth and describe Plan Austral and other heterodox shocks, describe the application of a structuralist model to Nicaragua, to Mexican food consumption policies, and to the food market in Colombia. They discuss a model with portfolio choice for Thailand, resource mobilization through administered prices, and conflicting claims and dynamic inflationary mechanisms in India, short-run energyeconomy interactions in Egypt, policy options for growth and the alleviation of poverty in Sri Lanka, currency devaluation in Mexico, and medium-term growth projections for Kuwait. The book concludes with a manual for a structuralist macro model program.
Lance Taylor is Professor of Economics at MIT.
Customer Reviews:
Real-world macroeconomics.......2000-08-12
This is real-world macroeconomics. The kind you need to work with planning and policy instead of playing games to pass exams. The aim is to answer practical questions and the approach is flexible enough to let one incorporate idiosyncrasies of real economies.
Innovative approach to analyzing economies in crisis.......1998-11-11
This book introduces a methodology for considering the totality of macro-economic variables that can adjust when an exchange rate devaluates, capital flight occurs, a government holds a persistent budget deficit--or the IMF enforces its elimination. The power of this approach is the ability to lay out the variables without predetermining how they will interact. That is the kind of tool that helps policy-makers think about problems as they break, before books have been written on how to correct them. Furthermore, while this approach is mathematically formal, the mathematics are designed to assist, rather than mystify. This means that social scientists (with a little concentration) can use this book as well as the more mathematically inclined.

An Excellent Guide to Consciousness and Inspirational Living.......2003-05-23
This book about my innerwealth is remarkable in its precious simplicity. I hear so many people, especically at work, talk about wanting balance and inspiration in daily life. And finally here is a clear guide to such harmony and the bonus, it is with nature on your side! I am fascinated by how the wisdom of the 5 laws of nature are so easily found in everyday life yet also so ignored by others who are stuck. This book speaks to me in a direct and boldly confronting way and yet it resonates with a gentle "Aha" deep within the core of my being. Just the spark I need to remind me of how great life is. A remarkable exploration into how life is meant to be. I get more every time I read it.

Best Resume Help Book Ever!.......2000-01-07
This is the best resume help book I've ever read! Since I've held six jobs in the last 10 years, I've searched for ways to present my employment history in a way that will not EXCLUDE me from the interview process, and this book has the answer to that problem! Additionally, it shows, with concrete examples, how to write about your accomplishments in a way that will help capture interviews, not rejection letters. And, getting interviews is the whole point of the resume writing process, afterall.
If you need help making your resume stand out from the crowd, then I recommend you check out this book!
The best book about resume writing I have encountered.......1998-09-07
After browsing numerous books on the art of resume writing, I decided to give Mr. Marcus a chance, and ordered this book from Amazon.com. I was very pleased with my decision, which was a right one. The book not only explains how to put yourself in the best possible light despite various shortcomings, but explains in detail how to write the various entries of a resume, and why. The book also contains many creative suggestions that will make your resume stand out in a stack, and includes numerous examples that highlight the points made.

Customer Reviews:
useless.......2006-02-26
not worth the money. short, skeletal format with very little new information. much better off buying the marc cosentino book on case studies. its far, far better. this book lacks numbers and solutions to the type of case studies youll be asked and is basically useless.
Very helpful!.......2001-11-06
Excellent overview of consulting cases. Perfect for case interview preparation. Must read before McKinsey interview!
very good.......2001-10-22
Living up to the Wharton name, this guide is a good step by step walk through several case examples. Also recommended: The Vault Guide to the Case Interview and the Vault Guide to the Top 50 Consulting Firms.
A good collection of case examples to practice.......2000-06-16
I currently work work for one of the major consulting firms and I have been invoved in many case interviews (both as the interviewee and the interviewer).
I would recommend this book to anyone who is considering entering the management consulting industry and requires additional practice cases. You will find a selection of 15 case studies with proposed solutions. Although I do not agree entirly with all the solutions, I thought the book generally provided realistic examples, with well structured and logical solutions.
One further point, although you can work through the book yourself, I would recommend that you team up with a "buddy" and alternate the role of interviewer /ee. This will stop you from jumping to the answers to soon and enable some feedback about presentation style. The book facilitates this type of role play.
Goodluck !

In the revised second edition of The First Book of Investing: The Absolute Beginner's Guide to Building Wealth Safely, financial advisor Samuel Case starts with a simple but substantial overview of today's major investment opportunities designed for readers who know absolutely nothing about the various alternatives available. He then guides the former novice through intermediate-level possibilities and higher-risk options with the aim of creating a portfolio that truly matches the investor's expertise and comfort level.
Book Description
Financial security and a comfortable retirement are important goals that concern us all. But, if you can?t tell a grade A bond from a grade A steak, how can you possibly achieve the financial future you want? A popular answer today is to consult a financial planner, but how do you choose a good one? To answer these stress-inducing questions comes Samuel Case and his newly revised
The First Book of Investing.
In simple and straight-forward language, Case gives beginning investors everything they need to know to start creating a portfolio. The first eleven chapters are designed to provide an overview of the major investment options including stocks, bonds, CDs, mutual funds, and real estate. In practical and friendly terms, Case gives readers the confidence to make basic investment decisions. He then moves the reader into intermediate investment techniques and introduces some high-risk investments such as futures, options, and collectibles. He encourages the individual investor to chose investments to match their comfort level and urges them not to get into something that does not match their goals and values. For example, rental management can be very lucrative for most people, but it is also a "hands-on" type of investment. This completely revised edition includes current information on the world of online investing. The popularity of home computers and the expansion of the internet make keeping track of your investments easier than ever. In the book, Case outlines a 30-minute tour of AOL?s services for individual investors.
About the Author
Samuel Case is an investment advisor and business writer with more than twenty-five years of investment experience. He is the author of Big Profits from Small Stocks and The Socially Responsible Guide to Smart Investing (both Prima).
Customer Reviews:
This really is the first book of investing........2006-12-05
All I can say about this book is WOW!! Because too often when you read material pertaining to investing, it throws so much unfamiliar jargon and concepts at you. Too many sources assume you know the basics about investing.
This book makes no such assumptions. I've learned so much already, and I've only read half the book.
The only drawbacks as far as I can tell: #1-The book spends a lot of time in the beginning going into detail about what to do if you come into an inheritance. Only a few people out there fall into this category, and the author could have cut out a lot of this discussion, since it only pertains to a few. #2-There was nothing mentioned about IRA's, which I think are a popular investment option. It would have been nice if IRA's could have been covered.
Great overview for beginners.......2004-01-29
This book was great for laying out the basics of investing. Topics covered range from the safe staples like government bonds to risky speculations like futures and included less common investment ideas including rare coins and owning businesses. Each topic is presented simply but thoroughly in a style that isn't too technical and is encouraging towards first-time investors and women. Real-life examples are given for harder-to-understand investment concepts. The math involved is explained fully (though sometimes too thoroughly for those who are not completely math-challenged). As the title states, this book won't give you strategies to get-rich-quick or be able to pick the right stocks. What it will give you is a fairly objective guide to the investing world and the risks and rewards involved in different investment strategies as well as a "Model Portfolio." Not all the sections were applicable to me, but they were good references nonetheless. The only drawbacks I found were a skimpy and slightly out-of-date "Online Investment" section which was basically a click-by-click account of how to use the finance section of AOL (which may be helpful for some but not me), and occasional cheesy humor (which was forgivable). I didn't realize how much I had learned from this book until I found myself explaining to a coworker why her junk bond mutual fund was relatively riskier and more volatile. Overall, the book felt like a trustworthy, objective source for responsible investing.
Investing.......2003-08-29
The first book of Investing the fully revised 3rd edition. The Absolute beginner's guide to building weath safley. This book explains a beginners path toward building weath a finacial freedom. The book provides its readers with easy to read fact boxes that encourage readers to keep reading. This books target audience should be teens and young adults. The reading is relitvily easy and descriptive. I encourage anyone who wants to learn more about professions in stock broking or just anyone who wants to learn about the general financial world to read this book.
A Good Place To Start When You Dont Have A Clue.......2002-11-22
This book is 3 years old now as of this review I write, if it was up to date Id give it 5 stars...it still has LOTS of relevent and important information for today and tomorrow because the fact of the matter is is that the rules will always be the same for SMART and SAFE investing found in this book. There are many excellent resources and websites listed too that really help...if you are fed up living paycheck to paycheck, get going with this and take charge of your life...or would you rather live a life you always complain about that??
A great book for anyone who knows nothing about investing!.......2000-11-24
If mutual funds, stock options, and equities make your head spin, this book is for you. Case has written a book that is easy to read and understand yet remains information packed. Even after finishing the book, it makes an excellent reference. The first section is a logically organized tutorial into the wide world of investing. What I really like about this book is that it overlooks no investment. As a high school student short on cash, it was refreshing to read about how I can begin investing with as little as $50. The only problem I have with the book is Chapter 12 "Socially Responsible Investing." Case continually uses nuclear power as a market example that is not socially responsible. This is not totally accurate. The reason socially responsible funds don't invest in nuclear power is because often time by investing in nuclear power you also invest in fossil fuel utilities as well. Besdies Case's cynicism in Chapter 12, I loved this book.

Mr. Bauer's - Boeing: The First Century - is a great follow-on to his earlier work - Boeing in Peace and War. Although it has much of the same text as its predecessor, it boasts of numerous illustrations to match the text to the Boeing aircraft he describes. A good work well worth the price.

Customer Reviews:
There must be a pony around here.......2003-03-21
Visitors to Amazon who read customer reviews may have noted that low ratings turn off readers--'helpful' ratings go down with the number of stars. A pity, since intelligent readers realize that ratings derive from reader experience and knowledge.
So: this could have been a fascinating, important book about a subject that affects millions of airline passengers. But Sabbagh snatches defeat from the jaws of potential victory solely because of his writing style--or, rather, the lack. This must be among the most hackneyed, cliche-ridden pieces of sloppy journalism ever foisted on a major publisher. One wonders whether an editor ever even looked at it.
The very first line of the book, in the Acknowledgments, is a cliche: "It goes without saying that . . ." Arrgghhh! The very first sentence of the Introduction is equally clumsy: "There are two things I know about airplanes that surprised me when I first learned them." How about: "Two things about airplanes surprised me." Beyond the clumsy construction he uses, the author should discover several thousand things that surprised him. I've been a pilot since age 17 and learn something new every time I fly. His entire introductory premise is fallacious and trivial.
The over-all impression of the book is that the author is not a pilot and doesn't really care much about flight; that he knows not nearly enough about the design, manufacturing, materials and basic aerodynamics technologies he tries to convey to the reader; and that his failure to master the language and rid himself of the leaden, cliched prose is a burden the reader is forced to share if he or she keeps slogging on.
There must be a pony around here. There must be a wonderful book about a great and epochal airplane hiding inside this mess. The reader shouldn't have to start with a shovel to find that book.
The only stars I give (two) are for information I was forced to dig out, with reluctance and frequent outbursts of impatience.
A Project Management.......2002-04-19
This title is less about aviation and flying than it is about project management and visionary business and management practices. The challenge of designing, building, and marketing a multimillion dollar aircraft it daunting, but the insight into the personalities and practices behind the challenge are insightful, illuminating how a good end-to-end project is run.
Those looking for hardcore aviation insights might be disappointed, as another reviewer was. But those who really want to understand the complex realities of running a business and a huge team will find insipration.
A Soporific Nightmare.......2000-07-23
I am a great fan of commercial aviation, and read many books on the subject. But this book is a soporific nightmare. The style of the author is trite, hackneyed, and the tone is overly melodramatic.
Excellent Story, Funny and Fascinating.......2000-07-03
21St-Century Jet : The Making and Marketing of the Boeing 777 is an excellent book. Though it does not go into exqusite detail about the systems of the 777, it provides an entertaining look into not only the design and construction, but the men and woman behind the aircraft. There is more to this plane than just it's systems, and that rarely told story is what makes this unique book one that will be enjoyed by engineers, plane enthusiasts, and anyone who has ever flown on an airplane. The story behind the 777 is amazing, the complexity of the plane is daunting, and putting this all into writing, the author makes a story that rivals any novel.
Talk about betting the company..........2000-06-10
A great book for any aviation or business buff.
