Book Description
An essential introduction to the field of historical geography, which offers a radical new way of understanding global capitalism.
Fiscal crises have cascaded across much of the developing world with devastating results, from Mexico to Indonesia, Russia and Argentina. The extreme volatility in contemporary political economic fortunes seems to mock our best efforts to understand the forces that drive development in the world economy.
In this groundbreaking book, David Harvey shows how the disciplines of historical geography yield decisive new insights into the workings of global capitalism, and introduces the concept of uneven geographical development as a revelatory perspective on the forces which create economic success or failure.

Another Harvey essay collection.......2006-11-12
As is usual for David Harvey, this series of three essays considers the role of space at both the political economic and the philosophical level. The first two essays are speeches given as Hettner Lectures in Geography at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, the last essay is a reflection on space as a 'keyword' in the sense of Raymond Williams. Together, this forms a small booklet of little more than 140 pages.
The first essay, "Neo-Liberalism and the Restoration of Class Power", is an overview of the resurgence of neoliberalism in recent decades, and the deleterious effects this has had both practically and in academics. Much of this is known to any leftist and the same sort of thing can be found in any radical blog.
The second essay is "A Theory of Uneven Geographical Development". This essay is much more interesting and is basically a summary and example of the typical approach of Harvey in utilizing Marxist economical geography. This text can be considered an introduction to the subject, useful to look into before one would go on to read "Limits to Capital", Harvey's most important work of this kind.
The last essay, "Space as a Key Word", is a philosophical analysis of the meaning of the word space, and its various dialectical aspects. This is in my view the most novel and contributive essay in the collection, as it builds on the work of Lefebvre, Einstein and Marx to construct a concept of space at nine different levels of abstraction. Two different matrices showing the intersection of these levels are provided by Harvey, sure to give inspiration for new thinking on this subject, which I think was the essay's main intent considering its shortness.
Whether it is worth it to buy this booklet separately is hard to say. It can be quite useful as an introduction to Harvey's way of thinking, to be read before some of his real books. The last essay is also a good insight into a little discussed subject, the philosophy of space. But certainly purchase of this work is hardly necessary, any other Harvey book will do as well.
Sophisticated analysis of geographical development.......2006-10-29
"Spaces of Global Capitalism" by David Harvey consists of two presentations delivered at the eighth Hettner-Lecture at the University of Heidelberg in 2004 and a third related essay. These challening works are the product of a thinker who has spent a lifetime of cross-disciplinary study on the issues of capitalism, politics, geography and related topics. Intended principally for an academic audience, Mr. Harvey's research succeeds in providing guidance for others who may want to further explore these issues in the future.
The first lecture, "Neo-liberalism and the restoration of class power" is by far the most accessible in the book. In essence a 62-page synopsis of Mr. Harvey's exceptional book, "A Brief History of Neoliberalism", the author convincingly reveals neoliberalism to be an ideology whose primary goal is to enshrine and protect elite power. Mr. Harvey's brilliant analysis connects growing income disparities with a concomitant rise in militarism and fundamentalism which he contends must be addressed with a revived popular struggle for democracy. The author's thoughts on this timely and important topic is quite simply essential reading.
The second lecture is entitled, "Notes towards a theory of uneven geographical development". Mr. Harvey explores how developed capitalist nations of the north tend to exploit the periphery, creating a chronic state of underdevelopment for much of the global south. The author discusses the concept of accumulation by dispossession and how it is subject to changing conditions, including: market exchange, spatial competition, geographical division of labor, monopolistic competition, annihilation of space through time, physical infrastructures, production of regionality, production of scale, territorial systems of political administration, and geopolitics. The analysis opens pathways for other scholars who may be interested in applying Mr. Harvey's principles to specific case studies.
The third essay included in the book is "Space as a key word." This seemed to be the most theoretical of the three and will probably be of greatest interests to specialists in the field of geographical development. Mr. Harvey shows how human practices define urban space and gives shape to architecture; for example, collective memory and political struggle are critical to defining culturally significant landmarks such as the rebuilding of ground zero in New York City. The author suggests that space must be understood from multiple perspectives and provides methodologies for others to consider.
I recommend this demanding book for academics or persons who have a sophisticated understanding of geographical development. On the other hand, those who are interested in uneven development as it pertains to neoliberalism are encouraged to pick up Mr. Harvey's highly-readable "A Brief History of Neoliberalism" in order to fully appreciate the author's thoughts on this particularly important topic.
A cogent and persuasive warning of the harm that can come from neglecting harmful worldwide geo-social trends.......2006-09-12
Spaces Of Global Capitalism: Towards A Theory Of Uneven Geographical Development is a collection of essays about fiscal crises that have wracked the developing world, from Mexico to Indonesia, Russia and Argentina. Geographer and social theorist David Harvey criticizes the failings of modern capitalism, discusses the development of neo-liberalism, and searches for answers to the globalization of inequality in the essays "Neo-Liberalism and the Restoration of Class Power", "Notes Towards a Theory of Uneven Geographical Development", and "Space as a Key Word". Intended for scholars and students across the humanities and social sciences, Spaces Of Global Capitalism is a cogent and persuasive warning of the harm that can come from neglecting harmful worldwide geo-social trends, and is highly recommended.
a great theoretical resource.......2006-07-10
Harvey is one of the most influential theorists of our times. He has been doing some great work on global development issues. Some of his initial thoughts are recorded in a recent book called _Spaces of Global Capitalism: Towards a theory of uneven geographical development_. This is continuation of his earlier works - New Imperialism and A brief history of Neoliberlism. He repeats some of the idea in this smaller book, however, he is working on some new ideas. So if you haven't read the other books, this can be good introduction. However, to get a better idea I would recommend reading his other works.
According to Harvey, uneven development is nothing new. However, extreme volatile geopolitical situation made it necessary for better theoretical interpretation. Harvey outlines four different ways currently we think of uneven development:
1)"Catch up": In this paradigm uneven development is the product of the process from the center that leaves behind residuals from preceding eras or "meets with pockets of resistances towards the progress and modernization that capitalism promotes". He continues, "Backwardness (the term is highly significant) arises out of an unwillingness or an inability (in racist versions considered innate, in environmentalist versions seen as naturally imposed, and in culturalist versions understood in terms of weight of historical, religious etc.) to "catch up" with the dynamics of a western-centered capitalism, usually portrayed as the highpoint of modernity and civilization."
2)Constructivist arguments: The focus here is exploitative practices of capitalism backed by political and military establishment of powerful nations.
3)Environmentalist: Jared Diamond and Jeffery Sachs are one of the biggest proponents of this approach.
4)Geopolitical interpretation: These interpretations focuses on territorially organized powers. "These powers can be organized as states or blocs of states but struggles also occur between regions, cities, communities, local neighborhoods, turfs etc."
Harvey points out that there are many overlaps between these approaches. However, depending on the approach, the line of argument is can change. So he is trying to develop a "unified" theory of uneven geographical development. He proposes four conditionalities that is simple enough to aid comprehension and complex enough to embrace the nuances:
a) The material embedding of capital accumulation process in the web of socio-ecological life .
b) Accumulation by dispossession.
c)The law-like character of capital accumulation in space and time.
d) The political, social and "class" struggles at a variety of geographical scales.

Feng Shui at Work: Arranging Your Work Space to Achieve Peak Performance and Maximum Profit.......2007-04-11
Fast shipping and Excellent condition. This book helped me set up my office space.
Think I'll Give it a Try.......2000-07-17
I'm a skeptic but the way the author talks about feng shui makes me want to try it. She makes sense and gives explanations about how feng shui works that aren't so far out. I will try a couple of her suggestions because they are simple and I figure I don't have anything to lose.
Feng Shui at Work.......2000-03-18
Kirsten M. Langtree tells you how to arrange your work space for maximum peak performance and maximum profit. If you work in an office this is a must read, even if you are not a believer in Feng Shui. The author describes several typical work environments and how to make them more comfortable. If you are not familiar with Feng Shui (it's acupuncture or acupressure for physical spaces), Kirsten gives the reader a brief overview of the history and basic principals of this ancient Buddhist practice to start. She then goes into more details and mentions the two systems she uses. Apparently, there are several Feng Shui schools divided into the compass schools and Black sect schools. Kirsten uses a bit of both and I found this confusing. In fact, I find the compass issue a bit confusing and used the information from the Black sect perspective (stand at the doorway, look in placing the Ba-Gua's North side on the wall of the door). If you have not had any previous exposure to Feng Shui, you may not understand when she is switching back and forth between the two schools the book needs a clearer explanation on this.
Aside from these points, there is a lot of good information about office seating and arrangements that anyone could benefit from. I repositioned my desk after reading her section titled Desk for Success and found an immediate difference in my productivity. Her case studies were helpful and inspiring. Just reading this book gave me another perspective on space. I have visited a lot of clients in corporate offices and have found so many things about the cubicle environment disturbing. But Kirsten goes through a step-by-step process of offering tips to make these environments more humanizing. Some of her solutions to work space are intuitive yet reading this book you will be able to focus on details that you may miss.
Lastly, she gives her Feng Shui corrections for some famous persons' (read the book to find out) offices and why she makes the changes. The expereinced intuitive can learn something from this book as well as the novice. I you are wondering if this stuff works, it does!
Surprisingly Helpful.......2000-02-12
I didnt know anything about feng shui until I read about it in the New York Times this week--and Lagatree's book was mentioned. No matter if you believe this stuff or not, this book is clearly and simply written. I'm sure there is more to feng shui than this--I'll check out her other book next. But I think she is onto something: some workplaces ARE more energized than others. There are offices that seem more conducive to getting things done. Feng shui makes sense to me--and by employing some of her suggestions I'm going to try it in my office and see if I can get better chi!
I can hardly wait to redesign my office for good feng shui!!.......1999-11-01
Kirsten Lagatree's latest book, Feng Shui at Work, is a literary example of the ancient Chinese art of placement, with its beautiful illustrations and breezy, concise writing packed with meaning. I'll have to admit I approached the whole concept of feng shui--in which furniture, articfacts, plants, fountatains, lighting, etc.--are carefully selected and positioned to optimize abundance and success--with my jaded western eye askance. After reading, Feng Shui at Work, however, I'm a potential convert. This refreshing and uncluttered work gave me a great deal of insight into the many offices I've occupied over the course of a 30 year career, including a number that worked well for me and several that didn't. Could this have been feng shui at work? In the past, I've confined my efforts at office design to bringing in a couple of pleasing objects and focusing on them to the exclusion of whatever torture the corporate meanies might have in store for me in my particular Kafkaesque cell, then letting the papers fly where they may. Lagatrees's book made me aware that I can play a much more instrumental role in shaping my work environment--and potentially my work relationships THROUGH my work environment--by paying attention to where I put my desk and file cabinet in relation to doors and windows, planning the content of the art I place on my walls, and my use of color, light, wood, plants, water, small animal sculptures and other materials. I don't know that I buy the entire feng shui program as of yet--it's hard for me to believe, for instance, that poison arrows (bad feng shui, or sha-ga) fly down the long corridor outside my office ( although I will cop to observing a lot of loony behavior out there in the Hell Hall). However, I am definitely looking forward to spending an actual Saturday at the office resdesigning my dingy little windowless stuffy space to enhance the feng shui, which helps the flow of chi, or life energy. So. I'll put four deep purple irises in a crystal vase in the southwest corner, turn my desk diagonally to face the Northeast corner, to the left of the door, where I'll place a little onyx turtle. No one will know what I'm up to this time... unless, of course, they've read Feng Shui at Work.

Customer Reviews:
Good for who are new in the high-tech IT consulting.......2004-08-23
I found useful many parts of the book for who are starting an IT consulting business. Obviously it is not a magic recipe. You need to work each point, to custom it for your company, your kind of projects, your culture.
Not a High-Value Reference.......2003-12-03
Although this book has a great deal of useful information, there are a number of areas where it misses the mark. Often the obvious is stated as important. In many respects the book takes a 35,000 foot view of the IT consulting practice and addresses issues faced primarily on very large projects with large consulting practices. With limited resources to acquire and read books on IT consulting, this is a book to skip - there are so many others that are quicker to read and have more valuable information (for example Alan Weiss general consulting and Janet Ruhl for IT).
There is the suggestion that payment terms should be negotiated after the contract is signed, but before actual work begins.
The pipeline, backlog and sales hit ratio sections don't mention the typical discrete steps in the sales cycle.
At one point, the authors write "It is said with tongue-in-cheek that any consulting firm that cannot operate its photocopier as a profit center probably also cannot do a decent client engagement." A couple paragraphs later in the same section the reader is instructed how to arrive at a price for a given markup using the formula Price = Cost/(1-Markup). Any large IT consulting firm that can't calculate markup without help cannot do a decent job consulting.
Elsewhere, the authors point out that switching from First Class to Coach travel, reducing out of town allowances, and reducing social/entertaing expenses are not good for employee morale but lower costs.
Must Have Consulting Playbook.......2003-05-03
Purba and Delaney offer a powerful playbook for creating and delivering customer solutions that exceed customer expectations and result in outstanding customer satisfaction.
An excellent resource!.......2003-04-11
This book is a must for anyone working in IT. Full of practical advice and information, the book is also an engaging read. I plan to apply the valuable information I obtained from "High-Value IT Consulting" to my business.
IT Consulting Excellence.......2003-03-27
Having worked as an IT consultant and on the other side, frequently purchasing consultant services, I can attest to the difficulty in successfully managing such a complex business. The authors' new book goes a long way to helping create order. It is a comprehensive and thoughtful approach to helping IT Consultants get a solid perspective on how to establish or improve their consulting practice. Excellence in managing a professional services practice requires a systematic approach to achieve balance between the big picture and the minutiae of details. This book provides the reader with both.
I believe the authors are right in their declaration that excellence in this field depends upon focus and determination, and a commitment to continually demonstrate how your consulting organization adds value lest you suffer the fate of obsolescence. I encourage practice managers to read this book. It is an important contribution to best practice and should be a part of their consulting toolkit.

Finally--A Doctor/Manager Who Knows What He Is Talking About.......2001-05-03
The practice of medicine has become increasingly complex. Sadly, for many who chose the field to care for people, it is becoming more and more of a business. Rimar, a professor at Yale and a Director of their medical group, developed a course for doctors to educate them in the realities of management and business. The Yale School of Management is a co-sponsor of this effort. Rimar has accomplished what no other physician has been able to do in this area. Perhaps because he is also a practicing anesthesiologist, he knows how to communicate with physicians and other healthcare professionals. This book is superbly written, of great practical value and belongs on the bookshelf of anyone who is interested in or considers him or herself an expert in health care.

My husband LOVED it!.......2006-03-22
I'm always searching for a new book for my husband's growing blacksmithing/metalworking library. He is an experienced metal artist and already owns most of the books I find. This book was new and I knew wasn't on his shelves, so I took a chance. He LOVES it! He had heard good things about the author and is still spending many hours pouring over the great photos, graphics and text. He told me any metal artist he knows would enjoy this book and want to keep it for reference. Thanks for an excellent birthday gift idea!

Best of the lot.......2005-06-30
If you buy on book on blacksmithing this is the one. My complements to the author for a job well done.
Product Description
You know Giuseppe Ciscato from the bestselling books he has edited for blacksmiths: Italian Masters of Wrought Iron (I Maestri Italiani del Ferro Battuto) , Italian Wrought Iron Beds and Bedroom Accessories (Il Letto e Dintorni), and The Magic of Italian Wrought Iron (La magia del Ferro Battuto Italiano) - all available through Amazon. You may also know that a good number of the pieces in those books were designed by Ciscato and forged by other blacksmiths.
This is a book of two decades worth of Giuseppe Ciscato's original and innovative designs which smiths are free to use and interpret as they wish.
There is only one page of text (in Italian) in this unique 160 page hardcover book. Most designs are in color.
Product Description
2 Books: 76 pages and 48 pages.
Artist Blacksmithing is a creative process. It begins with an idea which then becomes a mental picture. This must then become a real picture, usually a free-hand drawing, detailed enough to let the beginning smith visualize his idea, determine its size, shape and proportions, and also realistic enough so the experienced smith can present it to his customer, and use it as a basis for a dimensioned shop drawing.
These two books will help both apprentice and expert in a most important part of their work.
"The pencil is as important a tool for the blacksmith as his hammer." - Jack Andrews.
"Serious practice in freehand drawing is of basic importance." - Max Metzger.
The drawings in these books appear to be three-dimensional; the objects look as though they could be picked up. The realistic effect is the result of simple shading techniques explained in detail in the text, and avoids the drawing of an engineer. The workbook assigns exercises that will require the blacksmith to do his homework: consider the historical style that is pertinent, be compatible with the surroundings, and meet the functional requirements. Answers to exercises are provided. Together the two books will be useful tools in the artist-blacksmith's shop. The author, Rudolf Baum, is head of the metalwork department at a state technical school in Hennef, Germany. He prepared these books to provide an introduction to descriptive drawing for both apprentices and advanced artist-blacksmiths.

A Political Soliloquy. Not one useful idea about privacy. .......2006-01-18
Don't waist your money. From cover to cover Larry Sontag tells about who is watching and how these evil men will use this information against you. I wouldn't mind that if he gave one useful bit of information on how to avoid the problem. I would recommend "How To Be Invisible" by J.J. Luna or "Bulletproof Privacy" by Boston T. Party (although it is out of date, he still gives good advice.) Also "You and the Police" by Boston T. Party is a valuable read.
Very Well Written.......2003-04-06
In a field of poorly written and researched books, this one has an abundance of detailed info on what's going on in the world of personal privacy. Maybe he includes a bit too much revolutionary political zeal, but I found a great deal of practical guidance I can use to secure my private life in these rapidly changing times.

Worth every penny!.......2002-08-23
This isn't for the paranoid. Its for those who aren't paranoid enough.
This one is a keeper.
A user friendly guide to privacy!.......2001-12-09
I have read and re-read this practical and very useful book. I continue to reference it regularly and have implimented many of the techniques Sontag recommends. His suggestions regarding computer security have been particularly useful and his in-depth knowledge of banking and finance are right on! I highly recommend buying this valuable book.
Must-have for any one concerned with privacy in their lives.......1999-03-17
This eye-opening and extremely informative book accomplishes two things. First, it alerts the reader to the incredible amount of privacy we sacrifice in our daily personal and business lives. More importantly, you will learn what to do about it! The revelation for me was the fact that privacy and convenience are usually inversely proportional. So some of the tips and techniques will have you saying "oh darn - I can't do that anymore!" However, when you truly realize that most of your life is an open book for anyone who wishes to pry into it - you'll feel enlightened and empowered by the vast amount of information this book contains. It runs the gamut from issues regarding privacy at work, financial affairs, computer, communications, and more. There is also an excellent resource section at the end to enable you to explore further into the world of privacy. Whether you're concerned about Big Brother, being stalked, or simply of the mind that in this technology age it's increasingly vital to keep one's business private and secure, None Of Your Business is a must read.

This muckraking classic, which eventually led to regulation of the Standard Oil Company, was the inaugural work for crusading journalists whose mission was to expose corruption and abuse during the early 20th century. The history combined descriptions of John D. Rockefeller's business practices with his personal characteristics, creating an image of a cunning and ruthless person.

the caspian sea oil.......2001-12-18
This book is over 800 pages, starting from the early U.S. oil companies competing with one another in an 1890's style industrial struggle. It has detail. If you like hard data this is the source. Daunted by the size of this tome? read the last three chapters first. "The Price of Oil", "The legitimate Greatness of The Company" and "The Conclusion": these three chapters will put the present day in a new light for you. The Caspian Sea was an oil field before the Bolschevik Revolution. At that time czarist Russia was a world contender. Now Caspian Sea oil has been "rediscovered". What was the Burma oil co.? What were the yearly production figures? what were the various allocations of oil use? What role were other countries playing? This is the place to find it.
The Early History of Standard Oil.......2000-02-22
This is a wonderful account of the beginnings of the Standard Oil Company - from the perspective of one of the premier muckracker's of the 19th century. The book is mainly a series of articles strung together detailing some of the more illegal efforts of John D. Rockefeller to create a monopoly in the oil industry. It is a classic account of how to create a monopoly and has stories that involve everything from dynamiting the competition to innovative rebate plans that discourage competition..
