Millions of people in the third world die from diseases that are rare in the first world--diseases like malaria, tuberculosis, and schistosomiasis. AIDS, which is now usually treated in rich countries, still ravages the world's poor. Vaccines offer the best hope for controlling these diseases and could dramatically improve health in poor countries. But developers have little incentive to undertake the costly and risky research needed to develop vaccines. This is partly because the potential consumers are poor, but also because governments drive down prices.

In Strong Medicine, Michael Kremer and Rachel Glennerster offer an innovative yet simple solution to this worldwide problem: "Pull" programs to stimulate research. Here's how such programs would work. Funding agencies would commit to purchase viable vaccines if and when they were developed. This would create the incentives for vaccine developers to produce usable products for these neglected diseases. Private firms, rather than funding agencies, would pick which research strategies to pursue. After purchasing the vaccine, funders could distribute it at little or no cost to the afflicted countries.

Strong Medicine details just how these legally binding commitments would work. Ultimately, if no vaccines were developed, such a commitment would cost nothing. But if vaccines were developed, the program would save millions of lives and would be among the world's most cost-effective health interventions.

The vanished ways of colonial America's skilled craftsmen are vividly reconstructed in this superb book by Edwin Tunis. With incomparable wit and learning, and in over 450 meticulous drawings, the author describes the working methods and products, houses and shops, town and country trades, and individual and group enterprises by which the early Americans forged the economy of the New World.

In the tiny coastal settlements, which usually sprang up around a mill or near a tanyard, the first craftsmen set up their trades. The blacksmith, cooper, joiner, weaver, cordwainer, and housewright, working alone or with several assistants, invented their own tools and devised their own methods. Soon they were making products that far surpassed their early models: the American ax was so popular that English ironmongers often labeled their own axes "American" to sell them more readily. In the town squares a colonist could have his bread baked to order, bring in his wig to be curled, have his eyeglasses ground, his medicine prescription filled, or buy snuff for his many pocket boxes. With the thriving trade in "bespoke" or made-to-order work, fine American styles evolved; many of these are priceless heirlooms now--the silverware of Paul Revere and John Coney, redware and Queensware pottery, Poyntell hand-blocked wallpaper, the Kentucky rifle, Conestoga wagon, and the iron grillework still seen in some parts of the South. The author discusses in detail many of the trades which have since developed into important industries, like papermaking, glassmaking, shipbuilding, printing, and metalworking, often reconstructing from his own careful research the complex equipment used in these enterprises.

The ingenious, liberty-loving artisans left few written records of their work, and only Mr. Tunis, with his painstaking attention to authentic detail and his vast knowledge, could present such a complete treasury of the way things were done before machines obliterated this phase of early American life.

Classic history/reference book.......2003-04-12

A wonderful history/reference book for those interested in colonial era crafts as well as the artist/craftsman looking for vintage design styles and techniques. If possible, get the early hardbound edition that includes elements deleted in later softcover printings.

Incomplete descriptions.......2005-02-11

I have dozens of teambuilding books. This one disappoints. Even the format is inconsistent (some activities have a heading "Time" that indicates about how much time the activity takes, most do not even have that category). This feels more like someone printed their own notes on activities they are very familiar with...not written for someone who has never seen the activity before. For example, "The Grid" looks like a great activity but there is danger for the group making errors--they will lose "one resource." Unfortunately, Sikes never tells the reader what a resource is, nor how many each team should begin with. Some of the activities are simple and great (and if you like these, get Miller's Quick Team-building Activities for Busy Managers), some are unbelievably complex, and ther is one that requires advanced ropes course training to perform!

Some of the activities here were great but only a handful were easy to perform in an office setting with minimal setup. Great if you have a whole day to spend on a series of activities and preferably an outdoor setting, but in corporate teams with little space they could be a challenge.

Lots of ideas for team building & problem solving activities.......1999-09-23

This book is a must-have for any trainer. Sam Sikes takes a fun, creative approach to team building and problem solving activities. The activities presented run the gamut of activities from those requiring few props, to high challenge activities for ropes courses. There are activities that are adapatable for children's groups to adults. I have used a number of these activities in team building activities, and participants have always found the activities to be valuable -- and fun!

In my opinion, everybody should have a prenup because the process of drafting one teaches couples how to talk about money - and invaluable asset in their marriage to come.
We used this book to plan our prenup before our marriage in 2005.
It gives you all the relevant information, helps you consider all the important points, and alerts you about differences across states etc.
We still used lawyers to bullet-proof the agreement, but knowing exactly what we wanted greatly cut down on fees. In fact, my lawyer commented that she rarely had such a well-prepared client and the draft of the agreement was the fairest she had seen in years.

Because it is written in terms of "we will do this, etc." instead of "they will do this, etc." the book makes prenups more understandable but is less useful for someone who wants to do their own.

As I am preparing to be wed for the second time in November 2007, it is necessary for me to execute a prenuptial agreement to protect my assets and the assets of my children. It would be irresponsible to marry without one. I have researched available information on the internet including a determination of the best book on this subject matter. I ordered this book from Amazon at the best price available and I was not disappointed. The book is informative and includes sample language and forms to prepare your own prenuptial agreement. I, however, will simply use the book as reference material so I can carry on an intelligent conversation with an attorney of my choosing. I would NEVER try to prepare and execute a prenuptial agreement on my own given the complexities, legal issues, and different circumstances of each person. If you are in my situation, order the book and learn from it. Then, seek out an attorney to prepare and execute the agreement to ensure it cannot be challenged. Although I have a distaste for attorneys, sometimes you just can't get along without them. Regards and I wish you all a long, loving and prosperous marriage.

Excellent review of prenups.......2006-12-22

If you are marrying late, with significant assets, or have children from a former marriage you wish to take care of, a pre-nuptial agreement may be for you.

The book is quite thorough in its description of the basics, and provides a sound foundation for drafting a prenup. However, if you are very wealthy with millions of dollars in assets, and you are concerned that your new spouse will thwart your wishes when you die, you really should do your homework with this book, then contact an attorney.
