      Book Description

This book presents analysis of endemic deprivation in India and the role of public action in addressing the problem. The analysis is based on a broad view of economic development, focusing on human well-being and 'social opportunity' rather than the standard indicators of economic growth. India's success in reducing deprivation since Independence has been limited. Recent diagnoses of this failure of policy have concentrated on the counterproductive role of government regulation, and on the need for economic incentives to accelerate the economy. Professors Dreze and Sen argue that an assessment of India's failure to eliminate basic deprivations has to go beyond this limited focus, and to take note of the role played in that failure by inadequate public involvement in the provision of basic education, health care, social security, and related fields. Even the fostering of fast and participatory economic growth requires some basic social change, which is not addressed by liberalization and economic incentives. The authors also discuss the historical antecedents of these political and social neglects, including the distortion of policy priorities arising from inequalities of political power. Following on from this, the book considers the scope for public action to address these earlier biases and achieve a transformation of policy priorities. ` ... a fine account of India's achievements and failures ... written throughout in a fine style ... it will be a starting-point of subsequent discussions on social life in India.' Book Description

This is a study of how ethnic diversity is represented in public institutions in India, and of the politics and policy solutions devised to manage ethnic inequalities. With new data on representational patterns in parliament and cabinet, it provides an account of representation that encompasses the diversity of caste, tribe and religion. Emphasising the overlapping nature of social and economic inequalities in India, it seeks to place the issue of material disadvantage at the very heart of the debate on ethnic and cultural inequality.

                    Book Description

Over the last twenty years more and more historians of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries have turned their eyes away from the records of central administration, towards local archives, and the lives of the poor. What they have found is a wealth of sources some of which chronicle the lives, and many of which record the words, of working people. This book will bring together some of the best work based on these sources.

This book is a waste of time. It is simply a slapped together manual on how to start up any business with a few pages that state already known senior citizen information.

It is written for children and gives no real information. I would have returned it but I don't have the time to go to the post office and then pay postage and handling.

                          5 out of 5 stars Really helpful!.......2003-01-07

This is a great book! My now-husband and I bought two copies and went through it during the months before we got married, and it was really helpful in showing us how to put together our first budget. Even more than that, we learned a lot about each other (and this is after four years of dating) and about how we each deal with money. I'm sure those lessons will help us throughout our marriage as we deal with new financial circumstances and situations. I would recommend this book to any Christian couple planning for marriage.

3 out of 5 stars It is not what I expected..........2001-07-01

I had very high expectations for this book, and, truthfully they were not met. Although it is a "workbook" and helpful in that way, I did not find the actual chapters helpful. As a psych major in college, I had access to similar "quizes," however it was helpful to compare my fiance and myself, which I did not have the opportunity to do in college. Plain and simple: it is cheeper than taking a course in Psych of Personality, or having a psychologist administer a psychological inventory, but if you have experienced something like this in the past, don't waste your money... Oh yah, one more thing.... If you are not religious, and don't want a book that discusses God's view of money, this is, again, not the book for you.

4 out of 5 stars Christian-filled way to open the lines of communication.......1999-01-28

Though the first two chapters are filled with spiritual advice, the personality and spending surveys are eye-opening. If you're looking for spiritual guidance as well as financial advice, this is a book for you. However, if you just want to get down to the nitty gritty of how you can cut costs, and live comfortably you might want to look into a more personal finance type of book.

                              Book Description

"I am impressed by Lamont's assessments of who will be the global winners and losers. Lamont holds back no punches. If you want to see the big picture, globally and technologically, read this book."
—Philip Kotler, S. C. Johnson & Son Distinguished Professor of International Marketing J. L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management, Northwestern University

"Too often, companies charge headlong into global business activities with little strategic thought, historical perpective or analysis of global trends. Douglas Lamont’s Salmon Day perspective provides these companies with necessary food for thought as they expand their global sales and investment activities, helping them to make informed choices on market entry strategy, as well as which markets to target and why." Ken Anderberg, Publisher and Editor, Atlanta International Magazine

"In his new book, Douglas Lamont asks, 'Is America's number one position in the race toward globalization a permanent feature of economic reform or a cyclical result of current business conditions?' He thinks the U.S. has got it right and will thrive on globalization. He also concludes that China probably does not have it right and will suffer from globalization. I think he is wrong on both scores, but this is the most stimulating and well-informed discussion of these issues to be found anywhere. A must read for the manager who hopes to survive."
—Chalmers Johnson, President, Japan Policy Research Institute Author of MITI and the Japanese Mirocle

"All too many business people and pundits take for granted the continuous spread of the phenomena of globalization, cross-border trade and investment and new economic paradigms. They assume that the logic of American-style technology and consumerism is ineclutable. Douglas Lomant's Salmon Day shows conclusively that those who wish for this rich and rosy future have to work to make it happen. He points out where the traps are and how they can be avoided. Salmon Day is a valuable contribution because it is insightful and thought-provoking at the level of business and economic theory, while also providing the specific, hands-on, practical advice for business people so often locking in the grand theories of other consultants and experts."
—Daniel Burstein, Senior Advisor, The Blackstone Group Author of Big Dragon: The Future of China

"Douglas Lamont's book is not to be missed. Written in clear, provocative language, Salmon Day is never shy of the tough question. Lamont is certainly on target in articulating the challenges facing Japan and East Asia if they are to avoid the fate of salmon swimming upstream. His book ties together the many disparate elements that must be grasped to understand today's complex economy. This is straight talk about globalization - as it really is - and isn't. I consider it essential reading in the executive suite."
—Patrick Smith, Author of Japan: A Reinterpretation

3 out of 5 stars High and Low Water Mark Points.......1999-12-13

Salmon Day is the point in the future where some nations wind up global losers despite their current efforts to be world class economic contenders. The book handles big picture (macro and global) agenda items, but supports the views anocdotally with firm level mini-cases. The best part of the book is the title. "The End of the Beginning for Global Business" sold me a hardbound even though I was running through a foreign airport, weighted down with papers. It still has the loudest ring of truth in the whole book. The best chapter is the Introduction. It is also the shortest. Lamont's views about the U.S. and the "mostly American" global culture were 4 star. Those on China were 3 star. Lamont was way off on Japan and he gives way too much credit to Europeans. (** only). The book is a series of mental observations and offers only a shadow of a theoretical framework to support his views. Still, the concept that global business is now in the process of coming of age is right on. An adequate airplane book to pick up after you are finished reading term papers.

                                    Book Description

Belarus relies on Russia for about 85% of its total energy needs, while Russia needs Belarus??? oil and gas pipelines to export its supplies to Western Europe. How will energy exports from Russia and Belarus??? transit capabilities impact Western Europe if this interdependent relationship ends, either through political changes in Belarus or if Russia ends its energy subsidies to Belarus? This report looks at transit, infrastructure and investment issues and analyzes both the state of the current infrastructure, as well as the possibilities this transit opens to Western investors, particularly as the Yamal Pipeline nears completion. In addition, it looks at the current conflict between Belarus and Russian investors for control of the country??'s gas transit system and oil refineries. Part of the Russian Foreign Energy Policy Report series.

                                      Book Description

This important study explains how Russia, with its private sector and policy makers working in tandem, has exerted a significant amount of control over Kazakhstan??'s vast natural resources and its economic freedom. It looks at the way Russia and Kazakhstan agreed to divide the Caspian Sea shelf and how Kazakhstan has managed to maintain good relations with Moscow overall, despite its insistence on exporting energy resources to China and Europe directly and its hopes to export through Iran. This series of reports establishes for the first time the confluence of Russian foreign policy with the acquisition of foreign energy assets by Russian entities. Nine specific country profiles focus on the oil, gas, electricity and nuclear power industries. Each report written by an author of international standing, explains how Russian foreign energy downstream mergers and acquisitions are transpiring to consolidate the new Russian empire.

                                            Book Description

This is an economics book about the Russian oil and natural gas industry and its role in the Russian economy. It is intended to provide up to date statistical information, to consider the role of the Russian oil and natural gas industry within the Russian economy as a whole, to relate the Russian experience to the international "curse of oil" and "Dutch disease" literatures, and to discuss appropriate economic policies in Russia to ensure that the natural resources bonanza is used to develop the country and not to ruin it. The book is an edited collection of papers presented at the VIIth World Congress of ICCEES (International Council for Central and East European Studies) in Berlin (July 25-30, 2005). The authors are well known specialists from the U.S., Russia, Japan, and Western Europe.

This digital document is a journal article from Ecological Indicators, published by Elsevier in 2006. Description:
The chemical composition of terricolous lichens, top-soil and abundance and diversity of lichen communities were assessed at eight sites in the Pechora basin during the summer of 2000 and 2001 to assess local impacts of oil and gas operations. Sites close to industrial areas were compared with areas considered to be pristine. The broad objective of the study was to identify changes in the chemistry of a suite of lichens that could be caused by pollutants from the industrial sites. In particular, increases in the ratios of K:Mg and K:Ca+Mg are indicators of acid deposition and increased N indicates increased N deposition. Lead was also measured in lichens. Other elements measured were Ba, Ca, Cd, Cu, K, Mg, Na, Ni, Pb, Sr and Zn in top-soils. The Pechora basin, north-eastern European Russia, includes the north and east of the Komi Republic and a major portion of the Nenets Autonomous region. It is bounded by the Ural mountains to the east and by the Timan range to the west. The area has extensive natural resources, both renewable (e.g. forests) and non-renewable (e.g. minerals, coal, oil and gas). There were limited modifications in the chemistry of lichens and top-soils and lichen diversity close to an oil and gas industrial complex. Here, there were elevations of lead and nitrogen concentrations in lichen apices and in the apical:basal nitrogen ratio in Flavocetraria cucullata, with lower lichen diversity in epigeal and epiphytic lichens. Elevated concentrations of Ba and Ca were found in soil-ash over the 0-5cm horizon, probably as a result of local emissions from construction activity and gas flaring, rather than from long-range transport. Virtually all other sites remained unmodified and reflected background concentrations. The ecological impacts of the measured pollution loads were low, as elemental concentrations were generally below detection limits, except for one industrial site, where there were signs of an early indicator of industrial activity.
