    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Primer on Investment Strategy and Implementation.......2005-10-20

I was pretty impressed with this book. I would give it an A+ except for two reasons. Their strategy suggests a 100:0 asset allocation ratio of stocks to bonds regardless of the investor's age. The other reason is no mention of withdrawal strategies once you get your million dollars. Most computer simulations suggest a maximum withdrawal rate of 4% of assets with an annual inflation adjustment. For these 2 reasons I give the book an A.

As hard and complicated as Wall Street tries to make investing..... to make you think you need a broker, the steps for successful investing are very basic. This book does hit all the basic steps correctly.

#1 is to live below your means so you can save at least 10% of your gross each year and invest it. This sounds easy, but it apparently is not since the average U.S. household credit card debt is now around $8,000 saving rates are below 1%, and average household net worth is below $100K. The book should have mentioned the classic book The Richest Man in Babylon with regards to the merits of living below your means so you have money to invest.

#2 is to use automatic investment so you pay yourself first. If you set up an automatic way of investing, then you can't spend money you don't see. After all, the U.S. government adopted automatic payroll deduction to pay income taxes right after WWII because it was concerned people would not save to pay their tax bill. The government using automatic payroll deduction to assure they always get their share of your money, so why not use this method to keep some of your money for yourself? If you use automatic investment, you get the advantages of dollar cost averaging as well.

#3 is to invest your savings in stocks and use low cost index funds for your investments. The book got it right in saying that stock brokers are not your friends. Often their objective is to move your money into their hands per the classic book Where are the Customer's Yachts?

As I stated above, I think the book should have suggested phasing into some percentage of bond investments as you age. Bond index funds should be used for the bond investments.

As a yardstick measurement of how well one saves and invests, the book should have referenced The Millionaire Next Door's expected net worth formula of 1/10 of your age times your income. This gives you a frame of reference to how well you have saved and invested.

One inconsistent argument the book uses is that institutional investors have roughly 40% of their investments indexed while individuals only have about 5% indexed. This fact is true. However, institutional investors most commonly use a 60:40 stock to bond asset allocation and the book recommends 100:0 stocks to bonds. Most studies show that bonds lower portfolio risk significantly but returns do not suffer dramatically.

Other reviewers suggest reading the web site versus the book. Call me old-fashioned, but I hate reading more than about 1 or 2 screens worth of any web site......I much prefer to print out long web sites to read them. I also like the portability of a book versus worrying about my laptop's batteries running out.

All-in-all, a great primer on successful investing strategies. I would suggest companion books to supplement this book including The Richest Man in Babylon, Bogle on Mutual Funds, The Millionaire Next Door, The 4 Pillars of Investing, A Random Walk Down Wall Street, Wealth of Experience: Real Investors on what Works and What Doesn't, and Index Mutual Funds: How to Simplify Your Life and Beat the Pros.

4 out of 5 stars Good for Beginners.......2004-05-18

Chances are, if you follow the advise given in this book, you will accumlate significant wealth in the long-term. I like how the book tells investors to ignore the "talking heads" on CNBC and other financial outlets. Let the herds follow the headlines and as Buffett would say "be greedy when others are fearful."

If you can spend less, save more, max your tax-deferred investment options and invest for the long-term, you will have plenty of money to bask in come retirement day.

4 out of 5 stars Great Investing Advice.......2004-03-25

The Armchair Millionaire gives everyone the advice and support they need to succed in investing. The book shows you the simple things that everyone can do no matter how small their paycheck is to eventually become a millionaire and retire early. There is great advice on what to invest in safely and how to get the most out of your money by avoiding some taxes. Everyone who wants to become a millionaire needs to read this book.

2 out of 5 stars Not much content as a book, find the same info for free.......2003-08-24

First, I'll say that this was one of the first 10 investing books I've read as I'm starting the venture to becoming a wise investor.

The point of this review is to say that the book is pointless when the same exact info is given free and more concisely on the website with the same name. This book seems to try and fill up pages by adding fluff to a simple concept: invest 1/3 of your long term funds in each of US large cap stock index fund, US small cap stock index fund, and the large cap asian index fund. The rest of the book is really fluff around this.

I'd suggest simply visiting the armchair millionaire website to read the same info in a few pages.

Also, for the people in other reviews who say the strategy isn't performing well, they are forgetting that this is a LONG TERM strategy, and the reason the funds are currently at -2% return is because the crashes in 2000-2001 are being included. Over the long term, this strategy is considered sound. Thinking short term is entirely opposite to the strategy this book and others suggest.

In short, don't buy the book, just read the site.

    3 out of 5 stars Beginners only.......2003-02-18

I agree with the previous comments of there being nothing new introduced in this book. However, if this is going to be your first book ever on investing, it does offer good advice for the novice investor. Just DO NOT use the strategy they propose to making a million through index funds. Last i checked on their website, since it's inception in 1998, their portfolio has gone down 25.36% for a total loss of abut 31,000$.
Man, if i were them, i'd take down the site. It must pretty embarrassing to write a whole book about it being so easy to make a million through their "proven methods", and lose all that money trying to really prove it.

            Book Description

A popular aphorism suggests that in the end, no one ever regretted not spending more time in the office. Yet during our lives and careers we often seem to confuse our priorities, shifting our focus so that we end up with clients whom we know extremely well and families who are de facto strangers. In this book, widely renowned consultant Alan Weiss—cited as "a worldwide expert in executive education" in Success Magazine—tells how to blend life, work, and relationships in a way that will help anyone to work smarter and live better.

Weiss draws on scores of interviews and vignettes with highly successful consultants to offer nontheoretical, pragmatic advice on living a balanced life, including how to:

Despite all of Alan Weiss's books, consulting, workshops, newsletters and the rest of his success, or perhaps because of it, a couple or bitter reviewers seem to follow his listings to plant a single star where everyone else plants five. But that my be the price of success when bitter people are upset at their own failings.

This is a wonderful book which deals with escaping from tasks and deliverables. There are several sections on how to create more discretionary time. Weiss includes formulas for stress relief and establishing personal rewards. And he talks about personal mastery. The book is dvided into work, rest, and relationship sections. It is based on his popular newsletter, Balancing Act, and his workshops on life balance. (And I noted that it's published by a major publishing house, so the criticism of the size of the font is hardly relevant to the author or the quality of the material.)

Marvin Leonard was a merchant with a flair that will probably never be seen in today's world of "cookie cutter" department stores. His store was a unique place, where tradition and modern convenience blended beautifully. It's too bad that his pioneer Fort Worth store no longer exists. The book chronicles the glory days of a store, the likes of which, recall a time when shopping downtown was fun!

This applies to the SECOND Edition----I have always been interested in writing, grammar and the like. I purchased this book as a reference to upgrade my fading writing skills and bring them into the computer and Internet age. My last English book was from high school, long before computers and the Web. Shakespeare may still have been writing his plays back then, but my memory is a bit hazy of that time. Dr. Dodds' book brings me up to speed on the integrating the power of the web into writing and research. He does an excellant job of discussing the use of computers and their impact on the modern writer. However, as any book that tries to incorporate the internet, it is out dated the day before it is printed. The list of search engines fails to mention google.com, certainly a minor item. Perhaps the third edition? Still, I found the section on "Research and the Internet" to be very helpful. The appendix on internet resourses is very useful. Less helpful is the section on creating a web site. With only three pages devoted to that very broad topic, much was left out or skimmed over. To do this topic any justice would require its own major section. The overall style of the book is excellant. The various boxes with Computer Tips scattered through out the book are well done and helpful. The section on ESL Editing was a good discussion of the complexities and idiomatic structure of the English language as seen from the outside. To really learn English, learn another language. Overall, I enjoy the book and will keep it at my desk, both as a reference and something to randomly open up to learn/relearn some vagary of writing.

Currently 34% of the federal workforce (919,683 workers) are now eligible for retirement and within the next year 50% of the total workforce (1,352,475 workers) will be eligible for regular or early retirement. The biggest change in the federal sector in over 50 years is the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) which consolidated the functions of 21 agencies to better protect America and to fight terrorism.

This book is based on the author's 35 years of government experience. Damp retired from the Federal Aviation Administration in 2004. Finally, someone has written a book on government jobs that is not only up-to-date but easy to follow and understand. One of the best career guides I've read. I found all of the information I needed to locate, find and apply for government jobs. The Chapter on Completing Your Application was especially helpful. It shows you step-by-step how to complete your application or resume and it provides an actual job announcement and a well constructed sample application to guide you through the sometimes complex application process. The author also provides an easy-to-follow Job Hunters Checklist that walks you through your federal job search. Loaded with resources such as agency addresses, helpful web sites, and job hotlines and it covers special hiring programs including student hiring, overseas jobs, jobs for people with disabilities and much more. Well worth the purchase and I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a government job.

5 out of 5 stars Take Control of Your Student Loan Debt.......2006-07-12

This book is amazing!!!! I have read all of the other books out there... searching for the detailed information that I needed to help me get out of default one step at a time. This book finally did it! There is NO way that I could have rehabilitated my loan without learning how to negioitate with my guareenteer from this book!

3 out of 5 stars Out of date, not detailed enough.......2006-02-17

Needs to be updated, many of the phone numbers in the book do not exist anymore. It is not detailed enough, way too basic. Does not go into enough details about which laws apply to student loans and what the laws are. It was OK, but not great. You can get the updated material at NOLO website, but better to wait and see if they just update the book.

                        1 out of 5 stars Generalized Information.......2004-01-30

The author has taken information which is available in your student loan packet and from your lender, complied it with inaccuate state information, compiled it into a book and given it a title. A total waste of money. I returned the book for a refund.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent (not perfect) General-Purpose Student Loan Advice.......2001-04-01

I an an ex-lawyer with considerable exposure to some student loan issues. This book still told me things I did not know. I recommend it for people with minor, moderate, or severe student loan difficulties who are not thoroughly familiar with the rules governing their loans, or who are looking for new ideas on how to deal with their loans.

This is not to say that anyone should rely on this book by itself. Things often get complicated when you proceed past the general-purpose advice to the specifics of your own case. The primary value of this book is to alert the reader to the overall shape of the problem or solution.

My copy describes itself, on the back cover, as a "substantially updated 2nd edition." Its title page indicates it was last revised in February 2000. This may well be true. If so, I would distinguish "substantially" updated from "fully" updated. The book repeatedly refers to court decisions that are now a number of years old -- describing a 1993 case, for example, as "recent."

In addition, I have some concerns about the book's accuracy. For instance, in discussing the legal defense known as "laches," the author says, "[I]n only one case has a former student defended against a lawsuit claiming laches." (Pg. 7/37.) This is incorrect, and I believe it was mistaken even at the time of the first edition.

I would say that the author also misphrases the state of affairs when s/he says, "In general, you cannot assert the defense of laches against the government." A more accurate phrasing would be that "the defense of laches is unlikely to succeed against the government." There appears to have been some softening on the issue in other contexts in recent years, and other courts reviewing the one case to which the author refers have not generally said that the case -- granting a discharge to the student on grounds of laches -- was decided wrongly under its particular circumstances.

To provide one other example of error, on page 10/13 the author lays down the blanket rule that a student loan cannot be discharged in bankruptcy if it was made by a government unit. This is not what the law says. In context, I suspect the author meant to say that it CAN be discharged in bankruptcy if it is NOT made by a government unit. The book does explain the relevant laws more carefully elsewhere; the net effect of this error will probably be (a) to mislead a few people who do not read those other sections and (b) to confuse everyone else.

The important thing is to use a book like this to gain a general orientation to the issues, and take seriously its final chapter, which offers a bit of advice on how to do your own legal research. If you proceed that way, you will tend not to be confused by the occasional imperfection in general-purpose books like this one (and at this point, I don't believe anyone can help making at least an occasional mistake), and with a fair amount of effort you will probably be able to save yourself the expense and hassle of making obvious, costly, time-consuming errors in deciding how to proceed with your own case.

I have not found another book with anywhere near as much useful information on the subject of handling student loan debt. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is willing to use this book as one should use any legal authority: read it, understand it, and double-check its conclusions.

                        Book Description

Manufacturing the Future: A History of Western Electric is the first full-length history of the Western Electric Company, the manufacturing arm of the Bell System. As a manufacturer in the communications revolutions in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Western Electric made new products such as telegraphs, telephones, an early computing machine, radios, radar, and transistors. The book demonstrates, through Western's 1882 acquisition by Bell Telephone, that vertical integration was a lengthy process rather than a single event. It also shows the coming of age of industrial psychology and describes the advent of civil rights in corporate America.

4 out of 5 stars An almost complete history.......2007-06-27

Now that Lucent Technologies is gone, swallowed up by the French Telecom giant, this history of Western Electric could be completed. For now, we'll have to do with this comprehensive edition written when Lucent Technologies still had an apparently bright future. What becomes clear is that Lucent's downfall stems from a series of decisions beginning nearly a century earlier in which the manufacturing unit's interests always took second place to those of the Bell operating companies and AT&T.

On the downside, it's a bit of an "official" history from the point of view of the corporate higher-ups. It would have been interesting to contrast their veiw with those of the regular employees. Still, it's probably the best available history of this important institution.

4 out of 5 stars Great background for understanding the Internet age........1999-10-06

I'm actually an analyst of the telecom industry, so I come to this with a special interest. Nonetheless, I would highly recommend the book for those interested in some real foundations to understand the communications revolution. (and not just sound-byte Internet history). It's a pity that the name Lucent Technologies isn't in the title, because that's the real subject of the book. It's a history of Western Electric, which after a 120 year "pit stop" at AT&T ultimately spun out to become Lucent. The best part is the early chapters where we learn about the competition between the telegraph and Bell's telephone, the coalescing of local telephone companies under Bell's leadership, and ultimately the emergence of AT&T (with Western Electric)as the "Bell System" that most of us grew up with. Don't be put off by the fact that Lucent commissioned the book. It's a throughly documented, balanced, and obviously professional undertaking.
