Customer Reviews:
Fuzzy....fuzzy.......2002-07-06
i found this book quite fuzzy, although there are excellent books about decision making out there.
Limited real life applicability of SCRIPT methodology.......2002-06-23
I am in total agreement with the opinion of the reader from Chicago, who rated this book 1 star based on its tendency of overcomplicating straightforward issues in everyday decision making. In addition to this observation, I found that the SCRIPT methodology, the main idea of this book, is only appliacabe to a limited number of decisions and not to ALL as the authors suggest.
Simple does not equal simplistic.......2002-06-09
I was extremely disappointed with this book. It uses fancy, sophisticated-sounding but still meaningless lingo to describe commonsense everyday issues. Why complicate something what can be described in simple terms? The author fails to understand that simple does not equal simplistic.
Professor, Harvard Business School.......2002-01-21
Excellent and important book on decision making. A great read!
Customer Reviews:
Definitely recommend this book.......2005-05-18
Good book. I definitely recommend it. My second recommendation would be The Business of Software which is also very good.
A good book.......2005-04-28
Some of the other people who reviewed this book said it was kind of basic. Looking through it again, they are probably right. But that is what I was looking for, so I was happy with it.
The title says it is a "step by step guide" and that's what it is. Maybe if I was an MBA, I might not have found it as useful. But I'm a techie, so I can use all the advice I can get on the basics. Before I "quit my day job", I want to be sure I know what I'm doing.
The one criticism I have is regarding the "companion" CD-ROM which is mentioned in the book. You have to buy it separately. It would have been nice if they had included it in the back of the book. It's a minor complaint. The book is still well work the price, even without the CD-ROM.
Out of date.......2005-03-23
Much of the advice in this book may have been useful 10 years ago, but isn't relevent today. The picture of a pile of 3.5" floppy disks on the back cover is a good indication of the dated material in the book.
disappointment.......2005-02-21
I've read a few books on business start-ups and found this one to be intuitive, but lacking in depth. Many important aspects are mentioned, but are rarely discussed to any great length.
I found that this book was a good first step into the world of software development business as it raised important business related questions.
It would be innapropriate for me not to mention one major issue I have with the book. The book makes reference to resources in a cd that wasn't even included. At the end of the book, where most CDs are found, there's a sales pitch to call a 1800number to ORDER a cd!
There isn't even a website with supporting documents for this book, which is a luxury that we're accustomed to with other publishers.
I've noted the author, the publisher and would find it difficult to convince myself of buying anything from them again. I tried finding the publisher's website but to my disappointment, the publisher appears to be a business technology solutions provider(not the typical publishing company).
I've called the 1800 number and entered the extension to order the cd(to confirm other people's assertions that it will fail) and found that the extension is indeed invalid. I was offended that a company would try and squeeze more money out of something that other publishers provide for free, but to be directed to an extension that doesn't even exist is even more insulting.
If there's a chance that the publisher sees this... here's a suggestion.
1) If the phone number and extension are typos, provide a website to correct these publishing errors...
2) If you no longer support this publication, provide a website to inform people who buy it.
3) If you are considering another publication, provide the cd with the text and forget about trying for another sale (it may damage your reputation as it has in my mind)
If after all this, you're still considering this book... it's a good first step, but take note that you'll need to take many other steps towards business success.
A really useful book.......2005-02-05
I've collected a lot of books on the software business, and this one was one of the most useful. Most of the books I have are long on theory and short on practical advice--which is okay, if that's what you want. This one was just the opposite--lots of specific ideas and tips. I thought it was really useful.
I should warn you, however, if you are looking for a book on the history of the software business or the theory of the software business or anything like that, this is not the right book for you. On the other hand, if you are thinking of starting a software company--which I am--it's definitely worth getting.

The Living Organization - Spirituality in the Workplace.......2000-11-08
William Guillory has hit the nail squarely on the head. It is about time that someone has been able to give solid thoughts as to how one can adapt to the ever changing workplace, while maintaining and enhancing spiritual values.
With consolidation being the main focus of companies across North America, the pressures and anxiety are at extreme levels. William Guillory gives employees and executives a fresh insight into dealing with these changes.
This is a must read for anyone who is experiencing change or chaos in the workplace. It is a must read for everyone!
Spirituality: A New Paradigm for the Workplace.......2000-10-21
In THE STRUCTURE OF SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTIONS, Thomas Kuhn suggested that the evolution of science was marked more by epistemological shifts than linear developments over time that reflected unchanging truths and practices. After Kuhn's analysis, scientists would never again be able to do "business as usual." William Guillory's work represents a similar epistemological shift, and like Kuhn's REVOLUTIONS has the potential to change the way that business is envisioned and actualized, literally challenging the business of "business and usual," and introducing an element that has yet to be fully explored in the numerous works that articulate transformative business practices. The future of business, for Guillory, is defined by one idea/practice: spirituality. SPIRITUALITY IN THE WORKPLACE: A GUIDE FOR ADAPTING TO THE CHAOTICALLY CHANGING WORKPLACE is William Guillory's contribution to the emerging conversation of how to effectively transform business and implement practices that will be responsive to, and inclusive of, empowerment, diversity, and organizational coherence. Guillory challenges some of our most sacred beliefs about difference and division: self and other, individuality and collectivism, and of course, spirituality and materialism. It is a book that offers a new vision of leadership, one that values intuition as much as observation, and the spiritual as much as the material. William Guillory's vision is, indeed, integrative, and reflects his own personal challenges and transformations. Guillory is the CEO and founder of Innovations Consulting International, and a highly sought after authority on facilitating organizational transformation, managing diversity, and creating contexts for individual empowerment. His work with organizational change and diversity led naturally to his own transformative self-reflections, reflections that moved him beyond the material concerns of a career to the spiritual possibilities of exploring his own deeply embedded life interests. He writes in the prologue of SPIRITUALITY of an experience in October of 1985 that changed both his life and his mind. "Words flowed through me at a rate with which I cold hardly keep pace. There were phrases and concepts I had never heard before, pouring into my consciousness." Those words and phrases, he relates, challenged one of our culture's most sacred division, the separation of the spiritual and the material. Guillory believes that this division needs to be understood, addressed, and ultimately healed if organizations are going to be able to adapt to accelerated change and potential crises. The multiple ways of addressing this division are revealed throughout the book, in both the titles and the contents of each chapter. Chapter one discusses "The Living Organization," and offers a biological metaphor for understanding organizational evolution. Chapter two "Spirituality as a source of wisdom," addresses directly the main focus of the book and offers both definitions of spirituality and examples of how it is reflected in specific business practices. Chapter three, "People--The Only Sustainable Competitive Advantage," discusses the difficulties of personal transformation within organizational contexts that privilege material over human resources, and illustrates how individuals can successfully empower themselves to become agents of change. Chapter four, "Service--An Unconditional Commitment to Others," points to the value of challenging and redefining our conception of ourselves in relation to others, and the potential that committing one's self to service can have for both individual and organizational transformation. Chapter five, "Organizational Self-Awareness--Know Thyself," explores the critical connection between communication and culture that defines the problems and possibilities of organizational change and development in an increasingly diverse and global business economy. Chapter six, Wisdom--Your Soul Connection," illustrates the importance intuition and personal self-reflection for overcoming limiting conditions and actualizing performance potential. Chapter seven, "The New Leadership--Spirituality," explores the critical need for visionary, transformative, and spiritual leadership, and how these approaches reflect both normative principles and practical outcomes. In the final chapter, "The Future--A Call for Action," Guillory challenges us to rethink the world of work and our place in it, and the impact of our personal and professional works on the world in which we live. Guillory paradigmatic shift invites us to consider what David Bohm described as the "implicate order" or reality, the many diverse and seemingly divergent principles and practices that implicate us in each other's lives and, ultimately, in the planet itself. Although the titles of Guillory's chapters suggest at first glance an exploration into the realm of the esoteric and the transcendent, the chapters themselves reveal concrete and down to earth discussions and examples of spirituality at work in the work place. The book is very accessibly written, and does an excellent job touching on many of the emerging theoretical discussions of organizational change and development without being "theory laden." The use of personal experiences and narratives also serve to make the book extremely practical in terms of presenting concrete examples of spiritual practices. Each of the chapters also offers exercises and measurement instruments for facilitating self-reflexive explorations of spirituality in the workplace and in our lives. While at first glance this may seem like a strange mixture of science and metaphysics, a kind of "lichert scale spirituality," the exercises if take seriously serve as provocative catalysts for further understanding, and recognizing the necessity of a paradigmatic shift toward the spiritual. Guillory suggests that the economics of self-interest and personal gain have placed the planet in a tenuous position, one requiring radical change and personal transformation. SPIRITUALITY IN THE WORKPLACE offers an alternative paradigm for re-conceptualizing and re-creating the way we do business with each other, with the planet, and with ourselves. The articulation of a new paradigm is perhaps the most important contribution that this book makes to the literature on organization change and development. Unlike many of the texts in this genre, however, SPIRITUALITY IN THE WORKPLACE forces us to delve deeper into the mechanisms of culture and consciousness that undergird our business organizations and economic institutions. This is an important and provocative book that will makes a significant contribution to our understanding of how organizational change and personal transformation will be the keys to business competitiveness and development in the 21st century.
Great book.......2000-10-20
Spirituality in the Workplace is a truly inspirational book that encourages individuals and organizations to incorporate their values and spirituality into their work endeavers. The powerful ideas inside this book show how we can align the spiritual, mental and physical components of our lives to become more fully functional in the workplace. Although the focus is on values and individual development, Bill also makes a strong business case for using these principles to create excellence within an organization. His real life examples and creative insights make this a interesting and motivating read.
The Living Organization - Spirituality in the Workplace.......2000-10-07
Reading Dr Guillory's book, I found myself looking at a totally new arena in the workplace. Many concepts and thoughts that can improve employees relations at any level in an organization. Much, much more then the trendy books recommended by most of corporate America today. A "must read" book for those looking for the missing connection.
A candidate for the best of the genre.......2000-08-07
With the increasing trend to introspection in Western society and inquiry into sources of personal meaning in all areas of one's life, it is not surprising that the place of spirituality in the workplace is also being examined. The past 5 years have seen a number of books appear on the subject; many of them fall into a couple of categories: they are broad and fuzzy surveys of the topic, or they try to define what spirituality SHOULD look like. This is inherently flawed because spirituality is a manifestation of personal belief and a reflection of corporate culture. Dr. Guillory's book is one of the very few I have seen to take a different, and I feel proper, approach. First, Dr. Guillory is by training a chemist and yet he tackles a nebulous topic like spirituality with ease and familiarity. He effectively applies a scientific rigor to treatment of the subject but never becomes preachy or inaccessable. The volume is clearly written, well organized, and has a VERY strong take-away for the reader, who can complete exercises in the book to the formation and manifestation of a personal belief system and apply that to a work setting. Throughout the process, Dr. Guillory seems to accompany and guide the reader through the exercises. It is as if he is writing from within a spiritual context, rather than standing on the outside looking in. This volume has a wonderful mix of information and applications, as well as illustration of schematic and thought-models, that serve as a springboard for further inquiry. I found this book stayed in my head long after I had closed the cover. The examples of how corporate leaders had developed their own corporate spirituality were inspiring and believable. In conclusion, I loved this book because it was practical, direct, entertaining, and enlightening. It is a roadmap and guidebook that others can use to navigate through a murky topic with ease.

Customer Reviews:
For most people, really not worth your time.......2007-06-29
This is probably a good book for someone who has never held a "real" job, has no career prospects, and has serious self-esteem/emotional issues. The primary emphasis seems to be a Dr. Phil sort of approach, a hand-holding you-can-do-this guide for people who don't have the foggiest idea what they want out of life.
My goal in reading this was to get ideas for a side business. There was a two-page exercise on setting your goal, and other than that, I got nothing out of the book that I didn't already know. If you are somewhat intelligent, industrious, and your mommy and daddy didn't tell you that you'd never amount to anything, then I'd recommend skipping this book. The Millionaire Next Door is still the best book of this genre that I've ever read and is a great place to start.
A hard read.........2007-05-22
Book is written in raw language, which is not very pleasant to read. While it gives out a lot of facts I did not enjoy reading it and it made assimilating those facts harder.
An Okay Book But Not A Great One.......2005-12-29
As a previous reviewer pointed out this is not a how to book but one that deals with changing one's attitude from being an employee to an entrepenur. While that's great for those who need it, this book doesn't really offer anything new to anyone who is already inclined to start an entrepenurial venture. I would reccomend any of Robert Kiyosaki's books for those who want to go into business for themselves. Considering the current and near term job market,I highly encourage others to consider this route.
Now you can create 'The Good Life' for yourself........2005-10-10
I highly recommend their book - it has a huge gold mine of fast and very effective methods for becoming who you want to be and creating the life you want to live. And you can use them for personal growth as well as exploding your business. By applying what you learn from the exercises in the book (Life Purpose Statement, SMART goals, Baseball Diamond, VCR scripting, Power Affirmations and many more), you can transform yourself from victim to victor in a very short amount of time.
A Must Have!.......2005-09-28
This book is a must have for entrepreneurs. After experiencing their system I can say business is unbelievable!

Future Shock for the third millennium.......2000-01-08
I remember in the 1970's when Alvin Toeffler's "Future Shock" was on the best seller list. I devoured it and made it a central part of my "Weltanschauung". It swept the whole country. When a friend told me about "Bold New World", I read it and felt quite sure it would also make the best seller list and would sweep the country. I was really surprised when it didn't, even though it did go through more than one printing. Some of what Knoke predicted is already a fact of everyday life - five years later. I'm sure a new edition will eventually be printed, but this one is still current.
The book is aptly subtitled: "the essential road map to the twenty-first century". The central theme of the book is that we now live in a "placeless society" - a society that is being restructured in every way. How we communicate, how we learn, how we bank, how we fight wars, how we create wealth, how we govern and are governed are all in flux. The world is being restructured for the 21st century. The 20th century will be thought of as the last century when people do not routinely interact with machines.
"Place no longer matters". We live in the age of "Everything-Everywhere". He examines the environment, migration, telecommunications, ethics, computers, war, money and other topics. Each chapter starts with several vignettes that take place sometime in the future. A few of the vignettes are a little far-fetched, but most are interesting and thought provoking, even five years after they were written. He has thought provoking ideas in many areas about what the world in the next millennium will be like:
Financial Centers are less important. Lenders and borrowers do not have to meet face to face or even be in the same place. Banking can be done across state national boundaries. Paper isn't so important, and neither are middlepersons.
Warfare will be changed, since an enemy could attack your capital without ever setting foot on the border.
Terrorism will replace warfare as the biggest threat to our security.
Government will eventually become a world government. National governments may lose some of its control to multinational corporations.
Economy: The infinite global labor pool will cause the labor unions to lose their grip over industry. Robots will continue to displace humans in increasingly complex tasks. The world will not be "unemployed", but rather "redeployed". In the Stock Market "Merrill Lynch's neural network...immerses itself in historic stock market data and teaches itself to recognize patterns of behavior in pricing. ... The more information such systems digest, the more they develop an uncanny ability to anticipate future events." In capital intensive projects such as aircraft or spacecraft, the best technologies from all over the world will be melded together into one or two designs used worldwide. Multicurrency accounts will enable writing and cashing of checks in any currency.
Large Corporations will fragment.
Telepresence will be developed so sights, sounds and tactile feelings will be transmitted just as words are transmitted over the Internet now. Datasuits will enable people to visit with and touch one another when they are located in different parts of the world. The computer revolution is in its infancy. "The true computer revolution has yet to begin."
Transportation Hypersonic flight, supertrains, and highly specialized fleets of cargo ships will transform our world. the expense of shipping overnight packages across the country is no more than shipping them across the street. Distances will still exist, but they will no longer so powerfully determine how society will be organized.
Demographics People will no longer have to live where they work. They will no longer be place bound. Population centers may shift, and may become less important as some people move away from more populous areas.
Schools and Learning will be uncoupled. Schools no longer need buildings (library, classrooms, auditoriums...). Lifelong learning will be required in lieu of or in place of degrees. Learning will be done in a body suit -- in a simulated environment that responds with artificial intelligence. Education will be redesigned to mimic reality. The student will be free to explore. "Countries that thrive in the twenty-first century will be those adapting their educational systems to the Placeless Society."
Religion is likely to have a resurgence as people strive to cope with rapid change.
Knoke covers a whole series of challenges the world faces that result from the changing foundations of society: Terrorism, xenophobia, detached labor force, pollution, radioactivity, environmental degradation, social class and a host of other problems.
Knoke is an investment banker, business consultant, and futurist. He has written a book that's thought provoking and well worth reading.

Like sitting on a cast iron toilet seat in Bone, ID at - 30........1997-04-04
Everything causes cancer. Right? Well, this book has thatsentiment beat. According to Knocke's theory, everything in today'ssociety causes people to become "placeless." The author would have you believe that if you aren't connected to a "community" you just might blow up a Federal building, or the World Trade Center, or drop chemical agents in a crowded subway, or believe there is an alien spaceship behind the nearest comet. But, who would do those things? I couldn't put this book down. It was like ripping the ski mask off my neighbor's face and really seeing him for the first time. I kept thinking that the author must be a little off. After all, who is going to believe that Boeing and McDonald Douglas will merge? Yep, he writes about it way before it happened -- AND he tells you why it happened! The placeless society is so unnerving that you shouldn't read it alone. Buy two; give one to a dear friend who likes to talk things over. This book definitely has a "place" on the keeper shelf in my house.
For anyone seeking to understand our chaotic world today........1996-11-04
A business consultant, William Knoke sought to understand
the underlying causes for all the chaotic change taking place
in the world today. His explanation is simple, and for that
reason, brilliant: we have entered the "Age of Everything
Everywhere". Due to improvements in communications and
transportation, place no longer matters. Yet, "place" has
been a fundamental assumption of every one of our major
institutions. Take away that assumption, and things are
bound to change -- dramatically! Knoke than goes on to
explain how this "Age of Everything Everywhere" impacts our
work lives, our families, our nations. His book is a
comprehensive explanation of our chaotic world as we approach
the 21st century, and how to prepare ourselves. Not since
Alvin Tofler's "Power Shift" has anyone brought together such
seemingly diverse problems into a single viewpoint.
Clear writing about a possible tommorow.......1996-06-19
Knoke does an excellent job of extrapolating seemingly confusing
current trends into a coherent guess about the future.
If you liked Future Shock, or Megatrends, you will love this.
My only complaint is that is seems to be biased toward the
big bussiness perspective.
