                  Book Description

The Busy Fool Meets Father Time is a fable in the tradition of The One Minute Manager and The Wealthy Barber.

Taking a working vacation from his more cosmic duties, Father Time visits Earth to try to restore calm to the frenetic pace of the Information Age. As his test case, he takes on Stu and Mary Meldorph, two upwardly mobile and somewhat overwhelmed professionals who have two young daughters.

Using humor, confrontation and flattery, FT, as he calls himself, helps Stu and Mary deal with the diverse array of demands on their time at work and at home.

They (and readers)learn practical techniques that enable them to stay focused, get comfortable saying "No," and to balance their personal and professional lives.

The Busy Fool Meets Father Time is a quick and amusing read, loaded with useful ideas.

4 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled by the storybook title!.......2007-08-25

When I first began reading this book, I was pretty desperate to improve my time management skills--quickly! It was the intriguing title that appealed to me initially, since I'd seen plenty of "how-to" books in the self-help genre and wasn't interested in another treatise on how to get ten times the amount of stuff done in half the time, simply by following this amazing 53-step program......

After reading the first chapter of Busy Fool, though, I nearly tossed it aside as being unbearably condescending and childish. After all, it does begin like a fairy tale. I stuck with it, though, and I'm glad I did!

Without giving too much away, the premise is that Father Time (F.T.), a wise but crotchety old guy very reminiscent of Mel Brooks, undertakes the challenge of reforming a rather scatterbrained businessman with respect to improving his time management skills. F.T. does so by introducing one concept at a time to his pupil, and allowing the businessman to enhance it with some ideas of his own. Each suggested concept is examined critically, which is an approach not typically seen in such books as this.

What was so valuable about this book was that it does NOT overwhelm you with a huge list of behavioral changes you must make in order to "learn" time management. Nor does it portray non-use of time management strategies as morally reprehensible, as most other books do. It allows the reader to pose the question to him or herself, "What do I really want to accomplish, and is my behavior consistent with those goals?"

Since each time management "tool" suggested in the book is introduced in prototype form, there's plenty of room for you to adapt it to your personal needs. Also, you get to watch the characters fumble through attempts to apply the tool, so you don't get inundated with too many suggestions at once. I found I remembered nearly all the suggested tools put forth in the book and was able to apply most of them in some form after reading it. The novel format helps the reader to retain the concepts.

In summary, this is the rare how-to book that you can actually read all the way through before deciding which suggestions to use for yourself and how to implement them. In fact, you just may find yourself implementing some of the suggested time management tools without even having made a conscious effort to do so!

5 out of 5 stars Offers Insightful Marketing Advice.......2002-10-18

This book is about as good as it gets. It lays out a very fundamental way of approaching marketing for professional service firms. I found it easy to follow, although the language sometimes was a bit stilted. This is the third edition of this book, so the authors have had plenty of time to hone and refine their insights. I like the fact that there were many, many chapters, but each of them relatively short. This fits my style of getting through a book these days, because often I can only reach for a few pages at a time.

3 out of 5 stars You can find everything everything inside.......2001-07-12

Ideas, ideas and ideas. Thats what the book lack. It attempts to provide a blueprint of how to market a professional service company, without giving much useful ideas on how to do it, and more lacking is how to implement the few ideas it provides. Will be useful for planning, and not ideas generation.

I've heard it said that advertising and marketing are great places to go if your parents can afford to send you there. Even so, David Karlson comes up with DIY market tactics. So MARKETING YOUR CONSULTING OR PROFESSIONAL SERVICES works well out your own back door along with Douglas A. Gray's START AND RUN A PROFITABLE CONSULTING BUSINESS, Jessica Keyes' HOW TO BE A SUCCESSFUL INTERNET CONSULTANT, Bob Nelson and Peter Economy's CONSULTING FOR DUMMIES, and Ron Tepper's BECOME A TOP CONSULTANT.

Just make sure your image, logo, name and services are clearly defined by your budget, clients, and six-month goal projections, with costs and income balanced monthly. Then, keep current clients happy with in-office questionnaires sensitive to expanding, narrowing or updating services. Finally, attract more clients with indirectly impersonal marketing, such as making media appearances and writing articles or books, and with directly personal contacts, such as exhibiting at trade shows, holding workshops, and setting up buddy or mentor systems and an informal board of directors.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best book out there for small-mid cap firms.......1999-04-01

Hise's book is probably the best text out there for those intelligent laypeople who aspire to profit and succeed on the net. The book shows you exactly how some small and mid-capitalization firms are actually putting the internet to good use. Bear in mind, however, that 'good' does not necessarily mean profitable. There is no marketing spin in this book, and everything a growing small to mid-cap business would need to know to make a successful and profitable debut on the web is presented in a clear, easy to read fashion. The book is appropriately organized into ten chapters, and includes six highly useful appendices covering extended resources (print, internet, software, and related organizations) on topics such as getting online, website maintainance and development, site promotion, site tracking and ecommerce transactions, as well as other small business resources and contact information for companies profiled in the text. This book takes you through a guided tour of the web, what it is, how it evolved, how it works, and what you can do with it (for business and pleasure). Four very useful chapters are solely devoted to getting a website up and running, and include information on choosing a good ISP, building a good site, outsourcing for talent, and various site models one can use to guide one's own web project. Three more chapters are devoted to site promotion, online transactions, and the real purpose of marketing: tracking visitors and maintaining customer loyalty. A final chapter is solely devoted to internet related prognostications from (the then) leading cyber gurus (1996), many of which have now come to pass. Those who read this book should pay very close attention to the case studies in each chapter, as a lot of good information is hidden there. One glaring minus for the book is that it has few, if any examples of retail on the web. However, in Hise's defense, you do get a lot of good, practical tips on how to do retail well on the web. Another noticeable minus is the lack of information on legal issues surrounding the web. For example, Hise does not delve into the thorny question of who owns what when you outsource web site development, nor does she get into the hairy issue of protecting yourself in cyberspace. Many companies have been made more efficient by the net, and that is a plus. However, given the sheer cost and time necessary to put up a good site, the book's real audience is the manager in the mid-cap company. Because of the costs involved in developing and maintaining a good website, this book is most appropriate for those working with the deep pockets of a small to mid-cap company. Micro-cap and home-based business owners can also pick up some very useful hints here as well, but may be limited by the relatively high cost of implementing them. Overall, I think that this is the best book out there for a simple, understandable explanation of online business. The book tells you how to use the net not only for profit but also for greater efficiency and operating productivity as well. This little book, packed with a ton of good information and first-class resources, really packs a wallop. Hise has succeeded tremendously in writing a book that any intelligent, aspiring businessperson can benefit from.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to read for beginner........1997-11-27

Nearly half of the book are case studies. It's not quite difficult for any non-technical reader. The first few chapter can be skipped if you are familiar with the internet and the web. What I get after reading this book? Encouraging. It tells you what to do with very few don't. Anyway, if you need techical know-how, try others. If you need some business perspective, try this.

                              5 out of 5 stars no bullshit.......1997-05-14

This book writes about what companies are really doing online--what works and doesn't. It's not a bunch of hype from some consultant. The case studies are great

This book is helping me organize my finances. I love it! It talks about different ways to budget. There are a lot of commonsense principles, but there are methods of budgeting and investing which I hadn't considered. People seem to be taking all of the suggestions and following them religiously. I take small grains of wisdom and try to apply them one at a time. It seems to be working.

I bought this book a few years ago after having bought and read other personal finance guides. I found it to be well written, well organized and easy to read. It gave me great practical information for how to start investing/saving with very little money and because of this book I finally got the nerve to do just that. I have always been a financially organized person but this book gave me information that helped me grow from being just organized to being savvy too. It has had a great impact on my life and I am buying a few copies to share with friends. I think this book would be especially good for people who want to invest soon and just don't know how to get started. I highly recommend it!

                                          Book Description

The most common social phenomenon of Western societies is the organization, yet those
involved in real-world managing are not always willing to reveal the intricacies of their
everyday muddles. Barbara Czarniawska argues that in order to understand these uncharted
territories, we need to gather local and concrete stories about organizational life and subject
them to abstract and metaphorical interpretation.

Using a narrative approach unique to organizational studies, Czarniawska employs literary
devices to uncover the hidden workings of organizations. She applies cultural metaphors to
public administration in Sweden to demonstrate, for example, how the dynamics of a
screenplay can illuminate the budget disputes of an organization. She shows how the
interpretive description of organizational worlds works as a distinct genre of social analysis,
and her investigations ultimately disclose the paradoxical nature of organizational life: we follow
routines in order to change, and decentralize in order to control. By confronting such
paradoxes, we bring crisis to existing institutions and enable them to change.
