5 out of 5 stars To the Appropriate Point.......2006-12-17

I suffered from chronic overwork several years ago - routinely working 80-100 hours weekly. As I was searching for a way out, I found this book to be particularly helpful in focusing on the key issues and finding the choices that led to the much more balanced life that I now have. This entailed leaving my work and working in another area of my organization for a year and a half (working regular hours) before leaving that organization and area to start something new (answer the call to teach) in a different area of the country.

I highly recommend this book for those dealing with the consequences of overwork and desiring to search out their options for improving things where they are at, changing to something else or perhaps downsizing one's lifestyle by working part-time or early retirement.

What could be more important than what you do with your time?

1 out of 5 stars Too burdened with 12-step jargon to be useful.......2002-02-26

Fassel is taking on an issue that I believe is crucial in our society and I am pleased to see that, but I am disappointed in this book. She fails to get at the heart of some of the issues she raises because she is so mired in twelve-step jargon. Is it really impossible to cut back to a reasonable work load without calling on a "higher power" and going to meetings? And is the jargon of "disease" and "addiction" really applicable here? I also grew weary of the endless neologisms using the suffix "-aholic, with words like "care-aholic." This has really become overused.

I'd rather see a book that addresses the REAL issues--the unrealistic demands of companies and bosses, our society's obsession with "getting ahead" and consumption, our lack of adequate vacation time. Many other cultures have shorter work weeks, more vacation time and better family leave policies than ours, and they didn't have to go twelve-stepping to do it--they developed POLITICAL and social solutions to overwork instead. It seems we could do that here. Fassel's approach seems inadequate--and what good does it do for "work-aholics" to "make searching and fearless moral inventories of themselves" if our society's approach to the economy does not change?

4 out of 5 stars So glad it's back in print.......2001-06-19

Working Ourselves to Death changed my life. I now HAVE a life. Fassel sheds light on the consequences of overinvolvement in work and provides concrete advice on how to extract yourself from the kind of soul-killing obsession that work can become. If you can't leave the office behind, this book will show you the way out.

5 out of 5 stars to the point.......2003-07-22

This has been one of the most truly useful books on the topic of workaholism that I have read. Most helpful is the disease-model approach and lots of examples of how it is acted out. Will be a page-worn book by the time I'm done with it!

5 out of 5 stars Can't talk about stress without it........2000-06-11

Diane does a marvelous job of making you look at your workstyle and come to some hidden destroyers even when you think you have none. I particularly liked her frankness and most especially when she aligned her solid principles with the clergy. Excellent content, easy to read and learn form without haveing to get into psychobabble. I have referred the book every time I have given a seminar on stress management.

          5 out of 5 stars Recovering Workaddict.......2000-03-09

I found this to be the best book that I have read on word addiction. It is clear that Diane has been there, and she shares both from her personal as well as her professional experience. The result is a believable book that will resonate with any work addict, and will also show how to recover. I highly recommend it and I wish it was not out of print.

              Book Description

Mastering the Public Opinion Challenge won the PRIDE award, given by the National Communication Association, for the best book produced in public relations in 1994.

This book was one of the first to advocate an approach that is implicit in the new Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) strategies. Mastering the Public Opinion Challenge suggests the need to tie communication planning (advertising, marketing, and public relations) to the business and strategic planning cycles of the organization. The book argues the need for integrated planning processes based on public opinion research.

This book was written for public opinion and policy analysts, issues management specialists, and communication planners (advertising, public relations, and marketing).

The book offers the following benefits:

Suggests a menu of questions that can be asked by a policy analyst or issue-monitoring team--questions that you won't find anywhere else.

Suggests criteria that executives can use to prioritize and manage the issues that face their organization.

Tells how to set up intelligence systems (scanning, monitoring, and forecasting) that draw on internal and external information sources.

Tells how to write a multi-year or annual communication plan that supports the business or strategic objectives of the organization.

Tells how to write a multi-year or annual operational plan and work plans that put the strategic plan into action.

Tells how to write support plans for advertising or social marketing campaigns, issues management, or other communication activities.

Tells how to write a contingency plan for managing crises.

Provides sample communication plans to illustrate the above processes.

Explains how to produce a media analysis that appeals to executive audiences.

Offers excerpts from media analyses to demonstrate how public opinion analysts can add value to their products.

Describes how to design credible and valid survey questions and conduct surveys and focus groups to obtain the required information on publics.

Discusses media strategies for controlling issue development.

Argues the importance of communication strategies that involve multiple partners and share resources.

Mastering the Public Opinion Challenge is a book that led the field in offering a new approach to integrated communication planning in organizations. Please see also Communication Planning: An Integrated Approach by Sherry Devereaux Ferguson, Volume I of the new Sage Series in Public Relations, July 1999. This is the first book I've bought on job hunting, because I'm about to graduate from college this May. I loved all of the jokes and puns that the authors put in the chapters to keep your attention. I really dug the section where they showed what good and bad cover letters looked like. And the part where they talked about the most common interview questions and how to answer them was really cool too.

                Book Description

Thousands of African Americans poured into northwest Indiana in the 1920s dreaming of decent-paying jobs and a life without Klansmen, chain gangs, and cotton. Black Freedom Fighters in Steel: The Struggle for Democratic Unionism by Ruth Needleman adds a new dimension to the literature on race and labor. It tells the story of five men born in the South who migrated north for a chance to work the dirtiest and most dangerous jobs in the steel mills. Individually they fought for equality and justice; collectively they helped construct economic and union democracy in postwar America. George Kimbley, the oldest, grew up in Kentucky across the street from the family who had owned his parents. He fought with a French regiment in World War I and then settled in Gary, Indiana, in 1920 to work in steel. He joined the Steelworkers Organizing Committee and became the first African American member of its full-time staff in 1938. The youngest, Jonathan Comer, picked cotton on his father's land in Alabama, stood up to racism in the military during World War II, and became the first African American to be president of a basic steel local union. This is a book about the integration of unions, as well as about five remarkable individuals. It focuses on the decisive role of African American leaders in building interracial unionism. One chapter deals with the African American struggle for representation, highlighting the importance of independent black organization within the union. Needleman also presents a conversation among two pioneering steelworkers and current African American union leaders about the racial politics of union activism.

Admirable example of ethnographic methods to reveal the critical participation of African Americans in the labor movement. Needleman provides new evidence that black leaders were instrumental in breaking down barriers of racial discrimination. In this work, Needleman deftly examines how African Americans took on powerful labor leaders and built autonomous African American organizations to encourage desegregation and the development of inter-racial alliances. The writer is clearly among the leading ethnographers in the field, and this book makes a solid contribution to understanding the movement for racial justice in America. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Contribution to the Literature.......2003-05-19

This is an exceptional book with information and insight not found anywhere else. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the civil rights movement, especially in the north, and anyone interested in the history of unionism in the steel industry. Not only did Needleman have unparalleled access to her subjects, she was able to use this access to its fullest benefit in her analysis and narrative. Even the notes in this book are fascinating, and the depth of research is evident in the references and bibliography. An incisive scholarly work, the book is also great reading and holds the reader's interest throughout. A terrific addition to the literature on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Execellent exploration of black steelworkers.......2003-05-18

This is an excellent exploration of the changing worlds and struggles of black steelworkers not just in Northwest Indiana but also nationally through the 20th century. Needleman sensitively deals with the stories of five black union activists, then expands their experiences in tracing issues of power and race in the steelworkers union to the present. Goes well beyond all previous studies in caputuring not only the personal anguish but also the various organizational dilemmas of black steelworkers struggling amidst very difficult and changing racial circumstances. Highly recommended!!!

5 out of 5 stars A message for everyone here!.......2003-05-18

Needleman's book is a finely crafted blend of history and human interest. Though it focuses on the lives of five black unionists, there is a message here for everyone, regardless of race. Needleman probes each man's mind, revealing five distinct variations on a central theme. She then relates their experiences to those of other steel workers, putting it all in the context of the evolution of the USWA in a changing industrial climate. Great book. Easy to read. A real lesson in life.

5 out of 5 stars The Big 5 in Northwest Indiana.......2003-04-26

This book is a must read for anyone interested in the early struggles of steelworkers and their fight for unionism and equality. It follows the lives of 5 "freedom fighters", George Kimbley, Bill Young, John Howard, Curtis Strong, and Jonathan Comer and what they went through in the early years of the black steelworkers quest for equality. It continues up to the present day and details the struggles we are currently involved in. There were many years of interviews and meetings with these individuals as well as other labor leaders to bring out the facts and the details of every aspect of the labor movement during these history making decades. Lots of historic photographs are added to make you seemingly relive the actual times that these events took place. An excellent job by Ruth Needleman and her staff.

4 out of 5 stars Good general overview.......2000-05-12

This book covers in a very clear and structured manner the basics of direct marketing, including sections on creatives and database marketing. The sources at the end of each chapter indicate more detailed coverage. A good book for those entering the DM field and for those looking for a quick review or overview. It is not a handbook, rather, it's more of a basic textbook.

                  Book Description

How can a company effectively communicate its message to customers and prospects all over the world? How can it ensure that its branding messages "travel"? Designed to help executives position and leverage marketing communication in the global arena and use it to their ongoing strategic advantage, Communicating Globally shows how to successfully strategize, select appropriate communication tactics, and then execute a global communication plan that encompasses all sources of communication, both internal and external. Based on the strong theoretical foundations of integrated marketing communication (IMC), Communicating Globally offers a practitioner's perspective on integrated global marketing communication (IGMC) in action through vignettes, four complete case studies of well-recognized multinational brands, and one study case. Praise for Communicating Globally "In the 21st century, the ability of ad agencies to provide worldwide, integrated marketing services for their clients will become essential. Only those marketers and agencies with the ability to brand products and services globally will thrive. Communicating Globally provides a roadmap on how to do it right." O. Butch Drake, president-CEO, American Association of Advertising Agencies "No one can provide a guaranteed formula for future success, but Communicating Globally comes awfully close. By combining an astute knowledge of the global marketplace, emerging trends and technologies, and good old common sense, Don Schultz and Philip Kitchen illuminate the path for successful brand building in the 21st century." Ed Faruolo, vice president, corporate marketing communications, CIGNA Corporation "Don Schultz has done it again! His unique and highly readable approach is a must for companies looking to market globally in the new century. Communicating Globally offers an important road map through the maze of global marketing communications." James R. Gregory, CEO, Corporate Branding, LLC "This book is important because it brings the concept of integrated marketing communications (IMC) into full international focus for the first time. This focus is maintained throughout the whole structure and it makes the book a truly conceptual work. The case studies that illustrate the practical ramification of international IMC yield significant general as well as specific lessons." John Philip Jones, Syracuse University "The 1990's introduced integrated marketing--understanding and communicating relevantly with customers by using information. Communicating Globally now takes the same principles and adapts them to today's dynamic global marketplace. Even better, it is written in a style that makes it easy for a non-marketer to fully understand the importance of managing a brand." John R Wallis, vice president of marketing, Hyatt International Corporation

                    Book Description

This accessible and original text combines a systematic examination of the theories of welfare with an historical account of the evolution of the welfare state and its impact in promoting social justice. It identifies the principles governing social distribution and examines the rationales for these different distributive principles. This book also links the theories of distribution to the actual development of social policy and considers their outcomes.

Understanding State Welfare will be essential reading for students of social policy. It provides a clear understanding of both theories of welfare and the history of the development of the British welfare state.

                      Book Description

This volume reports a research study that investigates how different local agencies work together—or fail to do so—in their approach to disabled children and their families. The challenge lies in keeping the whole child in view, the child who is more than a patient, pupil or social work client, and more than the sum of these parts.

The study takes a broad view of local policy and practice. Key areas covered include: emerging trends in interagency working; difficulties in interagency work and some solutions; and case studies illustrating the lived experience of children and parents as they are affected by interagency work or its failure.

                        Book Description

If the objective of creating a society with opportunity for all is to be achieved, understanding the roots and impacts of social exclusion is essential. This book is the most comprehensive attempt to examine the causes of social exclusion and the policies necessary to tackle it. It is based on recent research carried out in the ESRC Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion (CASE) at the London School of Economics. This research draws on all the social science disciplines, particularly economics, sociology, demography, and area studies. It will be of interest and importance to students and teachers in the social sciences and to all those concerned with social policy in Britain and more widely. Social exclusion is not a matter solely of cash poverty, although that is an important dimension of it. The concept of social exclusion is relatively new, both in political and academic prominence. This book analyses the concept and examines the extent of exclusion measured in different ways. Contributors examine and explain the latest developments in research on income dynamics and movements in and out of poverty and low pay; links in social disadvantage across generations; the long-term effects of the growth in lone parenthood, early motherhood, and other changes in family structure; neighbourhood deprivation and community organization; and the prospects for success of government policies towards child poverty, education, and social security.

                                Book Description

Competition Policy in East Asia draws together a collection of papers on competition policy that were presented at the Twenty-Eighth Conference of the Pacific Area Forum on Trade and Development (PAFTAD), held in Manila on 16-18 September 2002. It seeks to clarify the issues and provide a framework for understanding competition policy, looking in depth at a number of regulated sectors for additional perspectives

Until two or three decades ago, competition and consumer protection policies were the preserve of the major developed economies like the United States, the United Kingdom and some European countries. Now competition issues are at the top of the international agenda as globalization spreads and as the operations of the World Trade Organization, the World Bank, the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum and other organizations have brought about a realization that regulatory reform - and in many economies the creation for the first time of regulatory instruments for competition and consumer protection - is an imperative.

                                  Book Description

For three decades F.M. Scherer has been writing on questions of competition policy from multiple perspectives as a professional economist, consultant in numerous antitrust and international trade proceedings, and (for two years) chief economist of the US Federal Trade Commission. This volume collects 26 of his most important papers, both previously published and unpublished, on a broad array of competition policy issues. The papers address the historical antecedents and rationale of competition policy, the logic of market definition, the implications of pricing strategies pursued by enterprises with monopoly power, tradeoffs between competition goals and the attainment of static and dynamic efficiency, implementing effective remedies in merger and monopoly cases and the role of competition policy in an increasingly open world economy.
