Best Terrorism Book.......2006-09-15
I rarely give five stars to anything, but this is quite possibly the best terrorism book ever, at least in terms of the sample of readings. Twenty-one chapters in all, the contributors all being well-known scholars in the political science field mainly. The textbook is very scholarly, divided into three parts, corresponding to the purposes of science: description, explanation, and prescription. Each part is excellent, and the book is well-balanced. Part I (description/characteristics)is a little heavy on the theoretical side, especially where there is some repetitive use of the phrase "post-modern" and exploration of historical side roads, but doesn't devolve into a bunch of navel-gazing over definitions and typologies like so many other books do. One could actually "use" the stuff in Part I, either for further theory development or other grounded purposes. Part II (explanation/causes) is probably what most readers would turn to first. It's nothing more than a collection of writings by all the luminaries in the field: Crenshaw, Wilkinson, Rubenstein, Laqueur, Howell, Juergensmeyer, Lewis, and Gurr. One couldn't ask for a better lineup, and although some of the articles have been previously published, a lot of them look like they were updated and revised for this book. Selection bias is always a possibility with books of this kind, and to be sure, the book is overall critical of mindless understanding approaches to counterterrorism, but not overly concessionistic. Military solutions are discussed, and lesser-known authors like Howell write about darwinistic solutions like letting failed states collapse on their own. However, Part III has counterweighting articles like Falk and Johnson's excellent discussions of why the war on terrorism is a moral war against "evil" (in the non-metaphysical sense). The third part of the book isn't about strategy or grand strategy, as one might expect, but is about tactics and counter-tactics, representing, in short, as good of a primer as any, on the political science approaches to counterterrorism option selection. I highly recommend this little book be read by anyone who wants to quickly become an erudite scholar of terrorism. It's highly educative.

More than 15,000 people have been killed, and 500,000 displaced, during years of low-intensity civil war in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal. This book describes the work of the KwaZulu-Natal Programme for Survivors of Violence (KZN-PSV), which (with the support of Oxfam) helps communities to grapple with the complex social, economic, political, and psychological problems posed by the conflict. A framework to guide interventions in such circumstances is outlined, and the application of this framework in work with children, youth, women, and local leadership is described in detail. The final chapter summarizes the principles of intervention which inform the work of KZN-PSV, and identifies the fundamental elements that have contributed to its sustained success.
The book is written for community leaders in any society damaged by civil conflict; for development agencies which support such communities; and for students and teachers of community-development theory and practice. Its theoretical framework is sufficiently non-specific to be applied usefully in a broad range of situations.

The West is the Best.......2005-08-28
Scruton identifies the difference between the West and the Rest in the nature of the political process. Briefly but with great clarity he explores the political history of the West that gave us individual freedom, prosperity and the pursuit of knowledge. Our civilisation is rooted in Greek thought, Roman law and Judeo-Christianity. He points out that freedom needs to be defined and that it needs restraints in order to continue to function. The success of the West is based on the practice of separating church and state, of recognizing the two different realms. This is the fundamental difference with Islam. Islamism is a totalitarian ideology precisely because the totality of society must submit to religion.
The author argues that the political process in Western civilisation has made it so successful - western democracies are governed by politics while the Rest is ruled by force. In the West, the political process functions through negotiation and compromise. Religion and culture are binding principles but they do not prescribe. With the collapse of our Judeo-Christian heritage in much of the West, a vital defence of our culture is being lost. According to Scruton, the love of freedom alone is not enough for our civilization to survive. He considers the nation state as a precondition for democracy and the rule of law. Under Islam, the Sharia is the only source of law, is considered to be globally binding and provides no room for dissent.
The UN is a club of gangsters. Most UN representatives do not speak for the people of their countries but only the thuggish regimes that lord it over them. In addition, Western elites and radical Islamists both despise Western civilization. This is particularly pronounced in academia, the media and the entertainment industry. This alienation manifests also in the Muslim immigrant communities in Europe that do not want to assimilate. They enjoy all the benefits of their new society whilst at the same time despising it. There is a sick synergy between the immigrants and the elites that disparage their own heritage. This tie of hatred binds them together.
Scruton explains the modern roots of Islamic militancy with reference to Wahhabism, the Muslim Brotherhood and the Khomeini revolution in Iran. He rightly criticises the West's dangerous commitment to multiculturalism but I do not agree with his conclusions that globalisation fosters terrorism and that democracy is not suitable for "the rest." One need only look at successful democracies like India and Japan to see the fallacy here. Even Islamic Turkey has a somewhat flawed but functioning democracy.
But overall, and for its multiple insights, this is a most valuable and enlightening work that provides plenty food for thought. Scruton is an original thinker and a gifted writer. I highly recommend The West And The Rest for those who are interested in history, culture and politics.

Larry Everest does a great job of making the "big picture" of the hidden Bush agenda in Iraq and the Middle East obvious and clear. This book will open your eyes, and will make you angry when you understand and realize how unethical, immoral and illegal our agressions against Iraq and the entire Middle East.

Good briefing on run-up to Iraq war. Now a bit dated (Sept. 2003), so doesn't include much on rise of Iraqi resistance. Still, the history sections on colonialism in Mesopotamia make for an informative background to current quagmire. Noteworthy also for detailed account of horrendous effects of US-UN sponsored sanctions, surely one of the great crimes of recent history. Book's thrust fits well with US's strategic drive to dominate planet, using oil as key control lever.Though not an "in depth" treatment, all the relevant bases are covered, particularly the deceptions used to cover the criminal invasion. There's also a handy appendix capsulizing the salient deceits for quick reference. Those expecting a strong ideological denunciation from Mr. Everest may be disappointed. Although his characterization of imperialist designs is straightforward, I think it's fair to say that the book could have been written by a muck-raking liberal. Recommended for ease of access and breadth of coverage.

I saw Mr. Everest on Book TV (C-SPAN) today (May 23)--would love to have him lecture at my college. He's done his homework on this one. He brought up two other topics that I researched during the last two semesters and he hit the mark on both (gay marriage and women's rights). After watching him, I went to Barne & Nobles to purchase this book. They did not have one copy. Needless to say, I'm ordering from Amazon.

I just read 3 home-based business books and found value in two of them. This one was the exception. Anyone who doesn't already possess the common-sense presented in this book would have trouble succeeding in any home-based venture. The writer also list various people's answers which can be pros or cons of certain aspect of starting business. This text definitely earns its Handbook title. It is a complete 178 page manual on how to initiate, grow and support a successful collaboration between not-for-profits, community groups and institutions.
It starts with detailed story of a fictional "Tri-County Collaboration for Homeless Services" that goes through every stage of development. This story is then referenced through out the second part of the book which gives detailed insight and advice on the specific tasks, stages and milestones throughout the life of a successful collaboration. The manual concludes with annotated resources and 30 pages of simple template forms and worksheets that cover everything from meeting agendas and decision-making protocols to joint agreements, promotional plans and guides to systems change.
The book has excellent formatting with lots of easily digested and referenced lists, information boxes and sub-headings. The many illustrative examples help provide real world context and the side bar quotes are a nice spice that help keep the text light. The perspective and language is from the front lines of community organizations in the USA, although generally applicable to collaboration between any type of organizations in any location.
The target audience is definitely real world organization leaders and consultants who aim to coordinate effective teamwork between multiple organizations either for funding reasons or out of their own initiative. At times the language and metaphors may cause a raised eyebrow or two from a hard nosed executive director, but such flowery bits are brief and easily overshadowed by concrete tasks and experienced insight.
Michael Winer and Karen Ray did a great service in authoring this handbook back in 1994. It would be interesting to see what revisions would be made in a second addition that could take into account the web technologies and techniques that are now part of our everyday work. Until then this handbook is still a very useful resource for the good people who want to do good work together.

Excellent book for buying a new car.......2007-05-07
This is an excellent book to read prior to buying a car. This book helped me to research the car I wanted to buy before going to the dealership by giving me helpful internet sites to find the invoice price on my car and other facts. It also instructed me on negotiating strategies to use when I sat down with the car salesman. True to the books description the salesman used the same tricks the book predicted he would. Highballing the initial price, stalling, stating he was going to lose money on the sale, bringing his boss in, etc. Reading this book allowed me not to be to eager and to be willing to leave if the salesman being cooperative on the price. This resulted in my purchasing a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid for $11 over the invoice price. I also bought my car insurance using one of the websites suggested by the book.

I purchased this book in August of 2005. [...] Should have returned it, but most of the info. is still worth while knowing. The copyright of the book I received is 1998. So when it comes to any internet purchasing or research info., the book is lacking. It still contains a lot of important tips to know before buying a car. I'm sure the most recent edition is great.

This is probably one of the most useful books I have ever bought.
Bourque guided me step-by-step through the process of buying a car online.
My experience was excellent. I got the vehicle I wanted at a price no other "offline" dealer was prepared to touch. I even managed to get them to throw in hundreds of dollars in extras.
I wish everything was this easy. Good job Pierre.
