                  Book Description

“There are dozens of primers on investing, but Schwab’s is straightforward and carefully organized. . . . The glimmers of his personal life are gems. . . . By now, Schwab is a financial brand name, and the lessons from his rich life make for good reading—and good investing.” — Suze Orman, author of The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom

The biggest risk in investing is doing nothing. In the updated edition of this New York Times bestseller, Charles Schwab presents clear and simple lessons that will give readers the confidence they need to start down the road to financial independence. Schwab, one of the most trusted gurus in American investing, explains all the basics in a clear, easy-to-understand way.

This revised edition completely updates the book to take into consideration the substantial changes and fluctuations in the market in recent years. A significant amount of new material has been added, including a valuable section on performance monitoring, a key strategy that enables investors to measure the performance of their portfolios against objective benchmarks.

Using this excellent book, investors will learn how to:

                  • Define and set investment goals
                  • Prepare an investment plan, put it into action, and update it regularly
                  • Plan for their children’s education
                  • Cope effectively with the ups and downs of the market
                  • Plan for a comfortable retirement

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reading for New Investors!.......2005-04-26

I am 30 and completely new to the investment world. This book offered excellent investment advice for even beginning investors. I totally disagree with the first reviewer who said this book is for the rich. Even if some of the book speaks to people with a lot of money, it clearly explains what the different types of investments are, defines terms throughout in case you forget what the key terms are so you don't have to flip back through the book when you forget what he's talking about, and offers insite from someone who's very successful at what he does. It's a great guide to start with. I would recommend this book to all beggining investors. It's excellent!

                  4 out of 5 stars personal finance.......2005-02-09

This is a great book on personal finance. When most people think of Charles Schwab, one of the biggest names in finance, they think of investing in equities. However, Schwab has chapters on mutual funds, fixed-income securities, and taxes. He talks about how to get started in investing, the importance of it, and how to invest to meet your goals and needs.

I use his services to manage my family's portolios online and it is cheaper than other services, unless you are a day trader. Other services require a minimum amount of trades per month, that is how they charge less for their trades. Schwab's services are ideal for anyone managing their IRA. You also get free S & P stock reports for companies, which gives you all of the historical data you need to make a wise decision. The previous reviewer didn't review the book, he reviewed the policies at Charles Schwab. If you are investing less than $10,000 and are trading more than a few times a year, taxes and transaction fees are going to eat up your returns no matter what. And since when is having $10,000 in savings rich?

This is a great book for beginners and people who need some guidance with respect to their retirement investments. Definitely worth reading.

1 out of 5 stars pretends to be for all investors but is only rich investors.......2004-11-09

In his book Charles Schwab pretends to have opened his brokerage for American investors but it isn't for all because the Charles Schwab BROKERAGE REQUIRES $10,000 TO OPEN A BROKERAGE ACCOUNT FOR INDIVIUAL[retail] INVESTORS.Harrisdirect,Firstrade,Optionsxpress don't require anything to open a brokerage account for individual investors.

This book is poorly written, as poorly as the obviously fake positive reviews the author always contaminates Amazon with for all his books. Look at his different books and reviews and you will quickly see how ridiculous he cheats.

This thing reads like an advertising company wrote it for Krispy Kreme. I was hoping to find a bit more in depth history, and what led to the leveraged buyout from Beatrice Foods in the 80's. This book offered 3 mere pages on that. It does not talk about the competition, as far as this book appears, there is none.

Sure, the doughnuts are great. For those looking for an unbiased view of the franchise, however, keep looking. This book is nothing more than a written commercial.

After finishing Trump's Art of the Deal, I moved on to Making Dough. This book is one step above go dog go and reads like a guide to why Krispy Kreme is great written and published by Krispy Kreme (I thought marketing literature was supposed to be printed on all glossy pages?).
There is little advice presented that would be easily applied to your own buisness, unless you are a KK franchise holder. This is amazingly disappointing since I love the product.

My Advice.... Go to the library and take the book out for free, buy a few gallons of gas to get to krispy kreme; Buy a dozen doughnuts; Sit and skim the book for an hour, you will still be up $5 which you can spend however you want.

What a disappointment. Nothing new in this book. It's more of a poorly created PR campaign for the company.

                      Book Description

Japan’s defeat in the Second World War was total, but her subsequent reconstruction was extraordinary. In this compelling book, one of Japan’s most eminent economists gives a comprehensive account of the recovery process, and a unique interpretation of the post-war Japanese economy.

                      5 out of 5 stars an insider's view of japan's post-war economy.......2000-06-19

Among the many (usually lengthy) works on the subject of Japan's post-war economy, this slim (pp277) volume is outstanding. The well-connected, Harvard-educated Tsuru was intimately involved in many of the landmark events described, especially the shaping of economic policy during the Occupation years. Throughout this lively and original analysis of economic policy-making and its political contexts, he provides an invaluable insider's view. Tsuru's socialist sympathies mean he is not just another capitalist apologist, ready to overlook the social costs of Japan's high-speed growth, but neither is he an ideologue unable to recognise the achievements. His approach is humane, often refreshingly personal, and anchored by a profound knowledge of his subject. There are insights throughout, such as the way the credit squeeze imposed in 1949-50 by Joseph Dodge helped revive the zaibatsu, by knocking out their competition, at a time when declared US policy was the elimination of the old corporate cartels. Anyone interested in understanding how Japan's economy took off and where it might be headed now should read this book.

                          Book Description

How do people make ends meet in societies undergoing fast and large-scale political and economic change? Eleven researchers present the results of field studies carried out among ordinary families and their neighbors, among businessmen, pretty street traders, and homeless people. They examine formal and informal means to earn a living in the transition period. The concept "Everyday economy" is the focus and common denominator of all contributions. These original contributions to the debate on post-Soviet societies should be of interest not only to social scientists and specialists, but to all who wish to gain a deeper understanding of this crucial period.
