      Product Description

The World Turned Upside Down questions the widespread claim that contemporary globalization has ended the centrality of the state in world affairs and is effectively irreversible. It offers discriminating definitions of globalization, internationalization and international interdependence and demonstrates the analytical and empirical difficulties generated by these concepts. Developments at the end of the 20th century are compared with those of earlier eras, particularly the end of the 19th and start of the 20th centuries. The book also surveys the historical role of the state and its enduring importance for human well-being. A central focus of the book is the challenge posed by contemporary developments to the role and capacity of the modern state and the consequences should such challenges prove to be overwhelming.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Christians Wanting to Avoid or Recover from Burnout.......2006-07-26

This book offers two best-sellers in one volume, a potent double dose of medicine for the overwhelming stress that leads to the complete physical, mental and spiritual exhaustion that can destroy your life. You will get a clear analysis of the cause and symptoms of burnout and a lasting solution that is firmly based on biblical truth.

You can't escape stress, but you can keep it from getting you down. With the powerful guidance found in this book, you will be able to rediscover your passion for life, enjoy your relationships and accomplishments, and learn how to really relax. This is your ultimate roadmap to recovery.

2 out of 5 stars Tedious for those not reading the Bible daily.......2001-12-25

Your view of this book is likely to depend on your religious outlook on life. The book is full of Bible-Quotes. It uses biblical personalities and settings as examples for burnout and the things that bring burnout about. Of those examples that do not figure biblical personalities, at least half have some strong connection to the church.

Personally, I feel that a book that deals with a clinical psychological issue, such as burnout, should rely on academic research and reasoning. That is missing here. Time and again the bible is taken as the source of all truth and the author's interpretation as our guiding line for doing things in life. Especially the latter makes it very difficult reading for people with academic training who are used to take a critical view of unsubstantiated statements.

5 out of 5 stars For Christians facing burnout, this is must reading........1998-12-10

This book is practical, readable, and worthwhile. Even if you're so burned out you can hardly face another book, this one is worth the time! Lots of case histories and real life examples, so you know the authors have dealt with real people. Very solid biblical foundation. Non-technical explanations make it easy reading for anyone. Solid, practical suggestions for avoiding or escaping burnout. This is two books put together in one volume. Reading this book helped me identify the strengths and weaknesses, as well as the potential hazards of my own personality type. Best book on the subject I've seen.

            5 out of 5 stars great resource!.......2006-09-21

I am a consultant to business-owners, and I recommend this book to my clients. It is very practical and informative, especially if you're starting a manufacturing business.

5 out of 5 stars Propreneur or Entrepreneur: that is the question..........2002-12-30

Before reviewing this excellent book, understand your answer to the Question I pose: Are you in-it for the autonomy and good-work, or .. are you in-it for the position/money/biz/game rush?

The answer to this question /defines/ your business/career commitment, so know it now.

Once you've answered the question, though, then NO MATTER which answer you discovered yours to be ( and almost all business-books, including this one, assume that ONLY entrepreneurs exist, and don't consider propreneurs or our needs/motivations... )
... this book you need. It gives you the what, the why, the /sense/ of startup-surviving.

Excellent book. These guys have /really/ been there: when they say ( paraphrase ) "fix it right, or you're paying endlessly and /still/ not having it right" they give examples... including one where the standard chemical-engineering-textbook version of what they were doing wasn't correct! Only by having the active integrity to perceive-it-right, and fix-it-right, up-front can one survive competition ( and having one's textbooks all be incorrect on a point fundamental to one's own current endeavour, is competitive pressure from a /really/ unexpected quarter ).

The rest of the book? Ah, that's for you to read, eh?

I'll give you the TOC, though, since it isn't included above in the book-data listed ( and I'm including page-numbers so you get the sense of the quantity-of-information given to each area in the book )

One of the most logical, useful books ever written. Can jump around or read from the start. Concentrates on real-world examples and less on financial abstracts. Especially good section on analyzing a field before you get in, then tells how to best enter. Recommended also by INC Magazine.

Is very informative on NFPA regulations and guidelines. I was impressed with the detail that was given in the book, our instructor was impressed with this book as well.

I found the study guide very helpful. Although the questions aren't exactly like the ones on the test, they are close and if you know the material in the study guide you can pass the tests. I had a couple of tests prior to the arrival of the guide and saw my scores improve after using the study guide. I used the true/false questions the most by correcting the false questions to make them true. This way I learned the material and could answer other questions that appeared on the actual test. I would recommend the guide for those getting started in FF and want to do well on the tests.

This book is sort of the stereotypical "How to hide your money offshore" sort of book, which totally ignores the realities of how people, banks and trust companies must respond to subpoenas, and how they must report offshore activity to the IRS or else face perjury charges for filing false returns. Indeed, some of the strategies advocated by this book have since proven not to work, such as those involving offshore credit cards (the IRS simply issued subpoenas to the major credit card companies for their records and now the people who held such credit cards are facing criminal investigations and possibly significant jail time).

In other words, it is unintentionally a guide as to what not to do. Pass on this one.

                              Book Description

The Industry Standard sought to chronicle the world of Internet business, but instead became one of its spectacular failures--and its collapse turned out to be a funnier story than you'd expect.

It was not that long ago that The Industry Standard was an international publishing phenomenon. Founded in 1998 with the grandiose goal of being "the BusinessWeek of the Internet economy," it soared to unprecedented heights during the dot-com boom, with far-flung bureaus, a thriving conference business, and a seemingly endless supply of cash. In 2000 alone, The Standard published more than 7,000 ad pages, generating revenues of over $200 million--more than any other magazine in the history of America. Little did anyone imagine that the following August the entire organization would file for bankruptcy.

Starving to Death on $200 Million a Year is James Ledbetter's mock-heroic chronicle of the magazine that lived large and died young: the wild dreams, the sudden success, the wanton excesses, the fatal hemorrhage. From his vantage point as one of The Standard's top editors, he saw up close how it succumbed to the same gold-rush fever as the Internet businesses it was supposed to be chronicling, realizing too late that he had been infected as well.

As America continues to reckon with its post-nineties hangover, Ledbetter offers a sardonic look at a thriving business that died on the verge of taking on the world.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for Industry Standard fans.......2004-10-03

So read this book and loved it. I was a avid reader of Grok and Industry Standard. I was only in highschool and college at the time. I really wanted to understand how could such a great magazine die such a quick death. This book explained a lot of it, but not all of the story. It is a quick read, I finished it very quickly. The problem with this book is: if you were not a fan of the magazine he was involved with, their is no point in reading it...because it does not necessarily give you insight that is relevant outside of that magazine.

2 out of 5 stars mildy interesting, ultimately fails to do what is says..........2003-09-16

Ledbetter was the editor for the European edition of the Industry Standard, so while not an outsider, he spent his time in NYC or London, far away from the San Fran offices, this is not exactly an inside view either.

The result reads like an in depth business journal article (which figures, based on the authors background) by someone with really good connections. There are some interesting stories, some tidbits about what went on in the "fat year" (but not enough) and some amusing insights.

The book falls flat because Ledbetter fails to really explain what went on from the inside. He barely scratches the surface, constantly back tracking, covering himself (no surprise based on the seeming constant threats of libel suits during his tenure) and generally trying to play both sides. He wants to dig up the dirt, but he also wants to continue working in the publishing business. The result is like the version of events an adult would tell a child, the story is the same, the details just get glossed over.

Not the dot.com expose we have been waiting for.

                              4 out of 5 stars A thoroughly compelling story.......2003-07-28

Nowadays, saying a book read more like fiction than non-fiction is a common thing to say about a book, but I have to say the way Ledbetter captures your attention and keeps you flipping pages is astonishing me because I don't read that many non-fiction books. I breezed thorough the first half in what seemed like only a few minutes, and the ending left me wanting to know more about "The Standard" as he refers to it in the book.

It's not uncommon for me to read a good mystery or thriller in 1 or 2 sittings, but I've never had any desire to keep reading a non-fiction book(even a good non-fiction book) for an extended period of time, and in a funny way the epilogue did seem more like the end of a mystery, filling us in on what's happened to the characters since the Standard folded. I read the book (cover to cover) in a couple of hours. I've never read anything by James Ledbetter before, but I've got to figure he's a pretty good reporter, because he managed to capture my attention, and hold it till he was done with me, and in the end I wanted a lot more. Or course, it's possible I simply had nothing better to do.

It's not a 5 star book. It's not going to change my life, and I won't pass this around to all my friends saying "You must read this book!" But as someone who had never heard of the Industry Standard till I opened the book, I came away from it saying, "I want to know more..."

Also, from my point of view, the book was not about the magazine. It was about Ledbetter's journey through the magazine, often shifting from the magazine's rise and fall to humorous stories about his run ins with PR agents, details about stories they published, and tales of a party or event, that he may or may not have attended.

If you do have a chance to pick up this book, you might enjoy the result, not because of the lessons learned, but because the story is just too good to be fiction.

                              4 out of 5 stars A Nostalgic Obituary.......2003-02-11

The tale of the rise and fall of The Industry Standard is an entertaining read, especially if you know somebody affected by the dotcom bubble burst, if you were laid off yourself, or especially if you were an employee of the company in question. I just happen to fit all three categories.

The Standard was of course an editorial operation, and this book focuses on the experiences of the editorial staff of which the author was a member. Since I was a part of the technical infrastructure team, I wasn't privy to many of the intricate details. Ledbetter's insights into the editorial staff's point-of-view are interesting and amusing; the basic happenings are all there (extravagant offsite meetings, reckless overspending, internal power struggles, and so on), but with some added first-person (or second-person) details.

I was hesitant to buy (and read) this book at first. Would I want to relive the days of The Standard? Would there be anything in there I didn't already know? Would it be interesting? For the most part, sure. It's not entirely a rehash of the life and death of one company; there are sprinklings of humorous (and Dilbert-ish) anecdotes that should be appealing to anybody who has dealt with the pressures of startups and shutdowns.

2 out of 5 stars Written from the sidelines by a guy who wasn't INSIDE>.......2003-02-01

While mildly amusing, there was little in the way of meat in this book. The author was located at either the New York or London office for almost the entire life of the magazine and only met with senior management on a few occasions.

For him to have written a book about the Industry Standard is like me writing a book about [a store] because I shop here.

If you can pick it up used, it might be worth a quick read but you will find yourself skipping pages because the details have little to do with the company and more to do with James explaining his job while there.
