The authors have taken a pick and mix approach to a variety of theories and have come up with a half baked product. If you want counselling theory look up some Rogers; for organisational models try some Weber; for Transactional Analysis refer to Berne or Harris; the list could go on. In this work you will get selections from a number of sources but some key points are overlooked, mis-interpreted or badly applied. Without presenting evidence to support the basis for this editing of other (better) material Client Centered Consulting does not hold water.

      1 out of 5 stars Amateurish.......2004-07-28

The only upside to this book is that it is brief and one can zip quickly through the whole process of finding, evaluating, and financing a purchase. However, don't let the title fool you (like it did with me): "How to become rich buying small businesses with little or no capital." There's only 1 small chapter on techniques for purchasing a business with little or no capital (~4 ideas, 2 of which are obvious, the other 2 being rare circumstances). In fact, it says that you should never (or can't) buy a business without your own money invested - so it's contrary to its title. It also does not really discuss "how to become rich", e.g., any kind of acquisition strategy that over time will build wealth (other than the obvious... buy a business, keep it profitable, and duh, you'll make money).

Overall, the ideas were so amateurish that it's obvious that the author is just trying to capitalize on a couple of experiences he's had and turn it into a book. Furthermore, it's riddled with typos that after a while become extremely annoying. E.g., he can't seem to get the word "your" right - it's always "you". And as I finished the book, I turned to the glossary, and his definition of Comparable Transaction Analysis is "A market-based valuation methodology in which the sale." (he doesn't complete the definition). Just examples of the unacceptable editing.

5 out of 5 stars Practices For Everyone, Not Just In Sales.......2007-04-10

Marty Clarke's years of experience as both seller and buyer can directly benefit anyone who reads this book and applies the lessons he outlines. In the particularly succinct, humorous and sharp style that is unique to Marty, the reasons behind the land mines are covered along with how to avoid or, when necessary, lessen their damaging effects. I've also found his `Worth Repeating' summaries to be very useful in their own right as quick reference reminders when I need to refresh the lessons.

Like many things, it boils down to practicing common sense and extending common courtesies, useful in everything beyond the sales environment that is the context of the book.

Marty doesn't go in to the buyers' land mines, but his `Leadership Land Mines' is an excellent companion piece to this one.Leadership Land Mines! 8 Management Catastrophes and How to Avoid Them

5 out of 5 stars gems of information for the b2b sales world.......2004-11-27

Valuable gems of information on communication gaffes that should be corrected in the B2B sales world. Best nuggets for me included removing "call me back" from my vocabulary; avoid handing Mr. or Mrs. Whizbang a "to-do" list, and why scribbling notes in margin of your day planner don't count. A quick read of this book will help set you apart from the amateurs.

      5 out of 5 stars I wish!.......2004-06-02

I wish every business person would read this book and require it to be read by everyone they hire.

I am continuously amazed by the lack of basic communication skills, not only by recent graduates, but, in some cases, by successful business people.

I believe Chapter nine, on grammar and spelling, could be a significant help to most TV newscasters.

This is easy to read, but contains lessons that we all could benefit from (from which we could all benefit!).

5 out of 5 stars So great I read it twice!.......2003-05-27

Not only have I read it twice, I am buying another copy for a client. This book is sharp, true, and funny. My favorite part is on agreed upon next steps. Marty says not having them is just "visiting". I am using these agreed upon next steps as a prerequisite for more time investment. This has helped my sales effectiveness measureably. When they're difficult, my radar for a time waster is on RED ALERT. Thanks, Marty for a great book. Seeing you speak was a great treat as well.

An essential manual for anybody who s ever considered a career as a phone sex operator, escort, call girl, exotic dancer, adult film performer or any other kind of sex worker. The actual details of sex work; how to get a job, how to keep yourself safe, how much you can expect to make, how to plan your exit strategy, and more... as well as dozens of juicy anecdotes about life is like between the sheets.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good Info .......2006-02-21

This book is a quick read about some of the various types of jobs in the sex industry. There's even info about how to get your own game started within some of the fields. The info on how to avoid getting busted by law enforcement is excellent and so is the info on safe sex.

There's much to be learned from this book if you've ever been curious about participating in the sex industry. Of course, everything about sex work could not possibly get covered, but the info given is a good intro into some jobs in the industry.

As a stripper, I've run into many women who want to strip in order to make some quick money. I certainly can relate and appreciate the author's admonition that if you're doing it for the money only, the job will suck!

4 out of 5 stars Good starting point.......2002-11-28

In 16 chapters, this book, the first I could find on becoming a female sex worker in the United States, Meretrix covers a lot of different types of work from her own personal experiences. While she covers many topics ranging from disease, to burnout, to maintaining clients, a good deal of this book is rather vague. More details were needed in several areas but it is a good first attempt at such a how-to book. The types of sex work discussed focus on those that use your body (pictures, street walking, dancing, etc) or your voice (phone sex) but not producers of the written word or those who take pictures -- aren't they all involved in sex work too? Please be aware of your state's laws before ordering this book or enacting any of the advice in this book. Note that I suspect the name is created specifically for sex work -- Meretrix is a Latin term for female harlot.

4 out of 5 stars Good Read (But written for a Woman).......2002-09-12

I found the book "Turning Pro" to be a good read. When I purchased the book I thought it might be for both man and woman looking to get into the Adult Business, but upon the first couple of pages you will find that its mainly written for a woman. But that aside, its a great book. It never really gets too indepth on some subjects and that leaves you with questions. In the Chapter about STD's it has some really great info that in itself make this book worth reading. If your looking for a indepth book about the Adult Business then this is not your book, but if your looking for a book that covers a wide range of work that gives you a starting point on research and/or work this is a great book to read. I found it very informative.

5 out of 5 stars packed with useful infomation for female sex workers in USA.......2001-11-24

My favorite tidbit is "Put your [spike-heeled] shoes in ziplock
freezer bags so the pointy heels don't snag your delicate
lingerie." The chapter on sexually transmitted diseases is
a real eye-opener. All the tips I've picked up from sex
workers, from Yoga to cosmetic sponges, are here.
There are a lot of references for more information, mostly
to Internet resources. If you are a female considering sex
work in the United States, read this book.
      John Sauter (...)

      5 out of 5 stars Finally! A no BS how-to guide.......2001-10-18

If you've ever wanted to find out what goes own behind the closed doors of the sex industry, this book sheds some much needed light where most people don't want to look. Be prepared for an unflinching look at all aspects of of the trade from 'lot lizards' to porn. Also there's a great discussion of STDs, which gave me more information that a gyno ever did. This is a must read if you've ever even thought about doing sex work.

      4 out of 5 stars Corporations - Legal Protection.......2004-07-07

This was the first book I've read on creating corporations. I like how Childer's talks about the various business entities one could have and the pros & cons. It was a medium read book, not super easy, but not so difficult that someone with very little knowledge of corporations could understand.

I also read his other book on Asset Protection, which repeats some of the things in this book. It just further drives the point home because this can be a tough thing to understand.

I'm in the process of setting up my own Nevada Corporation through a lawfirm and through this book, I was able to help minimize my questions and ask reasonably intelligent ones. I'm anxious for the process to finish. Good book and I highly recommend this an his Asset Protection book. I have the Million Heirs book, too, but I haven't read it yet.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books I have ever read on corporations.......2004-06-15

I invest in the stock market and real estate and have my own home based business. I have talked to many lawyers, read many books and taken classes and seminars, but never have I read anything as complete as this great book by John V. Childers. But then of course you can't find this information anywhere else. Either others don't know or they won't share it in a $24 book. They would rather charge you $1,000 for a seminar for the same information. No thanks, I'll go with the $24 book.

Thank you Attorney Childers for sharing this information.

      1 out of 5 stars Nothing New.......2003-06-25

This book has nothing new. Everything I read here I read in Derek Rowley's book. Childers at least read Rowley's book, since he seems to regurgitate word for word what Rowley said.

      5 out of 5 stars Make A Million, Keep A Million.......2001-08-14

The above title could be a subtitle for this terrific how-to book on saving money. This book makes sense. I had no idea there was any difference in how states treat corporations, but BOY did I find out otherwise. No wonder all the bigshots I play golf with have Nevada and Delaware corporations.

This book is a tad bit on the complicated side, but then, it has to be. This subject matter is VERY serious. Read it carefully and you can follow its directions like a recipe for making money. It works. I haven't made a million yet, but I'm well on the way, and this book helped.

3 out of 5 stars This book is not for the faint of heart........2001-06-28

Are you a business owner - perhaps own a home business? Looking for a smart way to cut your taxes and protect assets? While it is true that a corporation in Nevada is the way to go - don't think you are going to read through this book and do it yourself.

The author states you need to park yourself in libraries pooring over tax forms getting to learn all the tax system (get real). Once you have done that - you will most likely have to STILL hire a "Nevada corporation" sharp lawyer, a CPA and a tax specialist to help you set uo properly!

It may not be expensive to file the forms, but what will it cost you to get set up with a corporation after you paid the lawyers, Cpa's ect? You will probibly have to have a lawyer on retainer after that just to keep ahead of the IRS! Well hey - if you are a millionaire, no problem!

Having said that, this book is the place to start the process moving. Taxes and corporations are complicated. The future protection against lawsuits and tax savings are serious matters for everyone to consider. Just keep in mind that this book is not a "How to form a Nevada Corporation for dummies"

In the mid 1980s, the land in Tokyo and its surrounding area was thought to be worth more than the combined value of all real estate in the United States. Ten years later, with a banking system $400 billion in debt, the picture is entirely different. R. Taggart Murphy, an investment banker who lives in Japan, delves into the reasons for this backward fall in The Weight of the Yen. He details the Japanese political and economic systems and then nudges the finger of blame toward the country's civil service system--especially the Ministry of Finance--and to the mishandling of the U.S.-Japanese alliance.

          Book Description

In the eight years from 1980 to 1988, America fell from financial grace, becoming the world's largest debtor. This happened because the United States spent and Japan saved. In the early 1980s, Reagan's Washington discovered that Japan would cheerfully lend their vast savings to the United States by buying U.S. government bonds. How the Japanese money accumulated, the system that created it, and American fumbling that led to crippling debt service, a loss of much of our manufacturing base, and our economy's diminishing good jobs. The Weight of the Yen explains it all, in an intriguing, jargon-free analysis of the past fifteen years and the problems between America and Japan that are yet to come.

This is a good example of that.

Mr. Murphy (an investment banker, BTW) sounds like Eamonn Fingleton when he talks about the loss of the "good manufacturing jobs."

Some things that were not mentioned in the book:

          1. A nation is a "debtor nation" when foreigners purchase a lot of its assets. But this debt is more similar to what happens when you put money IN the bank. For every deposit, the bank goes deeper into debt because people feel safe parking their assets there. This is similar to the USA, where foreigners feel comfortable putting their assets here, necessarily resulting in a trade deficit. Until very recently, over 90% of the US trade deficit was driven by capital investment.

          2. Trade deficits are ONLY contingent on the level of domestic savings and investment. In the case that the latter is greater than the former, a trade deficit will result. Note that in the last several years of Japan's economic crisis, the trade surplus has actually *increased.* People in Japan are finding anyplace else to put their money but Japan, and the trade surplus is the result of that and not the cause.

          3. Many authors have pointed out that capital and labor productivity in the USA are a LOT higher than they are in Japan. The system of keiretsu has actually resulted in Japan's having a significantly *lower* domestic productivity than in the US. And as we all know, the ultimate determiner of standards of living is productivity-- NOT exchange rates. When looked at in terms of productivity, the US standard of living is about 50% higher than what it is in Japan.

          4. Some have made the case that Japan's exporting industries, which really WERE subject to market discipline developed in spite of (and not because of) the keiretsu system. ("Can Japan Compete?" Sakakibara/Takeuchi/ Porter). Another worthwhile read may be "Japan, the System that Soured," by Alex Katz.

          5. Fiscal policy: In just the short space of ten years, the miraculous system has gone from being set to take over the world to having a credit rating about the same level as South Africa. Now *that* took some doing. And this is at the same time that the Congress that coincided with the Clinton administration put the budget back into surplus. Trends, whatever they are, are quite reversible.

Time has not proven his fears founded in reality. The biggest lesson from this has been to NOT pay attention to people who shouldn't know what they are talking about.

5 out of 5 stars Informative and Comprehendible!.......2001-02-19

To study Japan as I do without studying its economic side would be like studying Europe but neglecting England, France, Germany, and Italy. This book gave me a great introduction to the nature of the exchange rate's importance and what factors cause its fluctuation. It largely fills one key component (economics) of one's overall study of Japan. As with most outstanding books, reading this one has led me to many other books. You don't need a Phd. in Economics to read this one!

5 out of 5 stars Best book on the history of Japanese finance in print........1999-03-26

This book is a must read for anyone interested in knowing how the Japanese financial world works, but is so well written that it should be on the bookshelf of anyone who cares about the US-Japan bilateral relationship. Especially if you want to know the truth about how the Japanese economy and financial market has been manipulated by the powerful beaurocracy, this is your book. For those mystified by Japan's "Lost Decade" and why it persists, this book will provide some surprising answers.

Just as interesting is the author's analysis of the financial straight jacket that the US and Japan locked themselves into without truly understanding the consequences. Fans of the Reagan Administration will think twice about their hero when they realize the legacy that Supply Side Economics has left in both the US and Japan.

At the risk of sounding pretentious, this book really is a true tour-de-force.
