Book Description

The past two years have been an unhappy and uncertain time for the once-unstoppable U.S. economy. The dot-com bubble has burst, the major stock indexes have lost hundreds of billions of dollars of value, there is a crisis of confidence in corporate governance, and the economy as a whole is growing sluggishly if at all. These developments have many people asking questions they thought we'd already answered: What makes economies grow? How can we get ours healthy again?

There are any number of one-dimensional answers to be had. Some focus on the national savings rate. Others take for granted that growth is driven by new technologies. In Why Economies Grow, New York Times columnist Jeff Madrick argues that these factors are not as dominant as many believe and all the emphasis they receive leads us to ignore other crucial factors. The most important of those neglected is the strength of market demand itself.

The surprising thesis at the heart of this book is that the process of growth is far more complex than most pundits, business journalists, and even economists believe. But it can be understood. Madrick re-examines the 1990s in light of earlier booms, shows why technology did not give rise to a "new economy," and tells what we need to do to restore rapid growth to the U.S. economy.

His original take on economic vitality, from the Middle Ages to the present, will surprise and inform everyone, and unsettle many. Avoiding the simplistic interpretations that now dominate economic discussion, Madrick proposes as economic agenda for the nation that is both historically well-founded and sharply different from the current one: an agenda that is led by government and that stresses the breadth and complexity of real growth.

1 out of 5 stars Save Your Money.......2003-02-11

A major disappointment. Jeff Madrick is very knowledgeable and well spoken but this book is little more than a sermon supporting big government and social programs.

1 out of 5 stars Misguided.......2002-11-17

This author lacks serious academic credentials. He provides little in the way of facts, but plenty in the way of opinions. His philosohpy of economic growth has been thoroughly discredited among leading economists. His recommendations sound good, but the economy just doesn't work that way.

      Book Description

Cotton's Renaissance is the story of one of the more remarkable feats in the annals of enterprise. At its center, the book shows how U.S. cotton growers lost half their market share in the 1960s and 1970s and then won it back through highly innovative marketing and organization. To place this unprecedented achievement in perspective, the authors analyze and interpret the responses of cotton growers over two hundred years to the timeless problems of nature, technology, markets, and politics. The upshot is a dramatic history of how growers learned--after more than a century and a half of trying to manage supply--how to drive and shape demand for their commodity. This key change in perspective and behavior was accomplished by the creation of a unique public-private company that helped thousands of growers to cultivate demand and to survive in an increasingly competitive global marketplace. The impact of Cotton Incorporated on the markets for cotton was nothing less than an entrepreneurial coup in strategy and organization. In its "total marketing" effort to rebuild cotton's market share, it fostered substantial scientific, technological, and managerial improvements in the quality and performance of cotton. In doing so, it has enhanced the efficiency not only of the farmers who grow cotton but also of the intermediaries who transform it into consumer goods. This account of the cotton industry's revival, which took place at every level of production and distribution, holds many important lessons for anyone interested in history, economics, marketing, or public policy.

Business writer and consultant Todd Leigh Mayo's The Joy of Self Employment: Entrepreneurship and Education in a Changing World is designed to show readers how satisfying it can be to work for oneself and to help those interested in giving it a try. Written in an unabashedly proselytizing style, it is divided into four sections. The first addresses the changes in today's workplace that encourage such endeavors. The second focuses on the role of education in the mastery of relevant skills and information. The third discusses actual creation of a new enterprise. And the fourth describes dozens of self-employed successes.

For many business people, giving an oral presentation is a lot like going to the dentist: both may be necessary on a regular basis, but that doesn't mean they won't be painful. Writer and educator Michael Egan understands the benefits and drawbacks associated with addressing a group, and in Would You Really Rather Die Than Give a Talk?, he offers advice to reluctant public speakers using just the right balance of information and inspiration. Employing an easily absorbed comic-book format, it describes preparation, structure, presentation, and a solid way to overcome stage fright.

              Book Description

If hanging from your fingernails is more appealing than public speaking, here comes a fun-filled, action-packed comic book to save the day.

Following the highly successful Vroom!, a breakthrough comic/business book on team building, this new comic takes a delightfully tongue-in-cheek approach, combined with a wealth of solid, serious information.

It follows the adventures (and misadventures) of Howard as he pulls together a great presentation and wins his company a lucrative contract. Along the way, readers learn about the art of persuasion, establishing eye contact, creating slides and overheads, overcoming stage fright -- all the presentation skills crucial for getting ahead in the business world.

              Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars weLEAD Book Review from the Editor of leadingtoday.org.......2005-03-27

The New Agreements in the Workplace resulted from the personal experience of author David Dibble and his own transformation from that of selfish indulgence to self-fulfillment. As a wealthy CEO, his personal life literally crashed and his following journey toward self-discovery prompted him to write this book. Dibble clearly understands that the modern workplace is riddled with ineffectiveness and complacency generated by fear. Many other authors and consultants have proposed a new agreement, or alternative culture in the modern workplace including Robert Greenleaf, Peter Drucker, Peter Block and many others. This book proposes a dramatic change in the workplace influenced by the author's own journey, and personal interest in systems theory and Toltec spirituality. He believes the book will help one discover a "revolutionary idea that is desperately needed in the modern business world: love." The influence of Toltec was most prominently introduced to the public by DON Miguel Ruiz, author of two best selling books. He also writes an introduction in this work.

The New Agreements in the Workplace is a short publication that you can read in one or two sittings. All eight chapters are well organized as Dibble outlines 5 proposed New Agreements in the Workplace and quickly weaves them together. Many of the ideas in this book are similar to servant-leadership principles but with more of a definite spiritual edge. The only major weakness in the book is that not enough detail is given to define and explore the new agreements in a culture that is presently contrary to its ideals! It is easy to make an enlightened statement and express new found knowledge, but how to implement that knowledge to produce change in the real world is the hard part.

If you are not into spirituality or resist rather vague concepts, The New Agreements in the Workplace may not appeal to you. But, if you are looking for a book that offers a sensitive and alternative approach to problem-solving in the workplace, it may be a profound journey.

5 out of 5 stars Based on the personal growth concept of the four agreements.......2005-02-05

The New Agreements in the Workplace: Releasing the Human Spirit by David Dibble is based on the personal growth concept of the `four agreements' comes a business-oriented guide which advocates using these insights as the beginning of a journey to gain mastery in the workplace, and to see transformative wisdom in work experiences. Concepts of loving, growing and serving people in the workplace advocate helping all produce the best work they can in an environment friendly to personal growth.

5 out of 5 stars An exciting new approach to the workplace.......2002-12-21

If you have been looking for a practical way to introduce the priciples of The Four Agreements into your workplace, this is the book for you. David has captured the essence of what today's workers and managers are searching for. A wonderful approach to making the place where many people spend the majority of their hours into a great place to be.

5 out of 5 stars The New Agreements in the Workplace; Releasing the Human Spi.......2002-11-20

I highly recommend The New Agreements in the Workplace as one of the most important business books I have read. It lays out a path for organizational change and transformation that we as CEO's, Coaches, and Consultants have been waiting for. As President of an executive search and staffing agency, my partner and I have applied the 5 principles laid out in The New Agreements over the past year. With volatility in the economy, we faced some really challenging times. We served our people, we supported their development, and we made changes to our systems. We did our best to move from fear and control to love and support. When we look at our performance indicators, here's what we see: more business, greater employee satisfaction, rising revenues, and greater profits. And, our Team enjoys the work they do. We are actually able to utilze this book as a poignant message for our organization's vision and purpose and as a guide for accelerating our growth. And, as we give the book to our clients, they have a really good idea of how we do business!

5 out of 5 stars Selling With Intent.......2002-11-19

I am the CEO of a small design/build energy conservation business. My company has worked to integrate the Four Agreements over the last 2 yours. Recently we began working with The New Agreements and we have seen profound changes in sales in addition to a re-energizing of our overall approach to work. After reading the book and attending a workshop (and our new VP Sales also attended a workshop with David Dibble) we made some dramatic changes in our sales and marketing systems. We began to "love, grow and serve" our customers with much more awareness. Well, since the workshops, we've done as much business in the last 45 days as we have all year. And with a lot of fun and great attention to our customers. For anyone interested in revitalizing their business, their employees, or their relationships with clients, I highly recommend this book.

The way the world does business is changing--and so are the secrets of success. * If you would not volunteer to do the job you have, you are probably doing the wrong job

Although this book is interesting, it is not about becoming a millionaire; it is about how to live your life. It offers 365 bits of advice for living. Following the book's advise would be unlikely to result in the reader becoming a millionaire.

4 out of 5 stars Heart-Warming Ways to Improve Your Attitude.......2000-06-11

This book is a combination of Think and Grow Rich, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and Unleash the Power Within in 365 aphorisms.

The aphorisms are divided into twelve subject areas from Integrity through Leadership. You will pass Relationships, Credibility, and Money along the way. About 95 percent of them are pertinent.

The ones that are off the wall almost provide comic relief. I never did figure out why having a chiropractor work on you spine was critical to your having integrity. And I swear by my chiropractor!

I may sound like a nit-picker, but there isn't too much in the book that will actually turn you into a millionaire in the narrow sense. It won't show you how to pick a stock, start up the next Amazon.com, or be a great real estate investor. Basically, the book's premise is that with your very positive, opportunity-seeking, desirable self you'll bump into enough to have that million rub off on you. If you feel comfortable with that approach, by all means buy, read and enjoy the book. If you want more focused advice, go elsewhere.

Good luck with your search for that first million, however you decide to pursue it!

It is a good thing, I did not do my normal - pick up a highlighter. With the exception of 224 and 225, the entire book would be HOT PINK.

This is a book on how to be a better you. Everything begins from within. Begin from within - your wallet. Buy the book!

This volume contains reminiscences of about a thousand MicroSoft employees who've worked there over its 25 year history, each about a third-page long in general chronological order. Interspersed are several longer pieces by the big guys like Bill and Paul and Bob. It reminds me of a high school yearbook. Most of the pieces are about business accomplishments, but there are digressions into work life, hobbies, and feelings about change at MS.

The book is from MicroSoft, but doesn't tell you how to be another MicroSoft. At first glance I thought it was a self-congratulatory piece on the occasion of MS 25th anniversary and mainly for its employees. But it contains a wealth of material on how a geek business culture operates. I feel it is unfinished. Some academic types needs to organize the material from the indiviual articles into a more constructive history.

All full-time Microsoft employees received a complimentary copy of "Inside Out" just before it was released. I perused mine over lunch that day and confirmed that "Inside Out" is little more than a glossy, book-length version of the weekly internal newsletter--peppy, vapid, and grindingly dull. The only people I can see getting anything out of it are Microsoft employees, who can spend a diverting fifteen minutes skimming the index for the names of people they know. But of course they already own the book.

I read this book to hopefully gain some more insights of Microsoft than most conventional business books. It turned out to be a collection of a bunch of stock options glutted, brain washed Microserfs over glorifying themselves. Yes, Microsoft is a great company with many talented people. But the fact is, the best talents of Microsoft have left to find true greatness in the internet age. In the internet age, true greatness has not yet emerged on this planet. Yes, the best is yet to come, but it won't be Microsoft!! Think about it, even the name is wrong!! You think the future is about software for microcomputers? Save your money, there's nothing in the books that you can't get from your friends that work there and from tons of business books that are out there glorifying Microsoft's past.

This book, intended primarily as an internal Microsoft morale booster, is an excellent read.

However, one must not forget that this book is intended to perpetuate the cult of Microsoft among its employees, and as such, contains inherent bias and self-flattery. Think of it as an exceptionally well-done recruiting brochure.
