In 1997, the sky fell in Asia. Up until the moment the Thai currency crisis began in May of that year, most pundits could see no end to the "Asian miracle." Now many of those same pundits are predicting a more severe drop while others go so far as to suggest that Asia is entering a "lost decade." The hard truth, suggests Callum Henderson, the Managing Currency Analyst for Asia at Standard & Poor's, is not so dire or dramatic. While Henderson acknowledges that most of the affected countries, particularly Thailand, South Korea, Malaysia, and Indonesia, have a long way to go in transforming their economic systems, the long term outlook for Asia is good. The conditions that help to make high rates of growth possible--high savings rates, low taxation, good education systems, and high productivity--are still in place. What needs changing are the government policies that focused too heavily on exports as the main engine of economic growth.
Henderson traces how and why the currency crisis happened and finds useful parallels between it and the Mexican crisis that began in late 1994. He also offers specific remedies--such as the creation of a domestic bond market in Asia--and points to compelling opportunities in countries with mature financial systems such as Singapore. This is the first comprehensive look at the Asian financial crisis and should be useful to anyone doing business or investing in Asia. --Harry C. Edwards

"Ora tau, Mingkem"(Javanese expression).......1999-11-17
This book is well written which makes it a usefull tool to improve my English. The content is OK, but nothing worth it to rave about.(Perhaps, the author need to visit Continent of Asia little more often.)
20/20 hindsight.......1999-04-08
This is a good book -- it tells what we already know. Too bad that the author could not predict any of these events -- but then of course hindsight is always 20/20! I do not think this book helps one to do business in Asia. One major drawback - the author seems to have no understanding of Asian business and seems not to have sullied his conclusions by speaking with any Asians. Read this book for a glimpse of perfect hindsight -- but read also "New Asian Emperors: the Overseas Chinese their Strategies and Competitive Advantages" by George T. Haley for a more fair appraisal of the Asian situation and a terrific understanding of Asian business.
Insightful account for 1997 Asian currency Crisis.......1999-02-09
The Auther explain the underlining historical events ( e.g. the ups and down of dollar Yen exchange rate) that lead to the boom and bust of the Asian economics. He also account for the 1994 Mexico financial crisis in similar manner. Useful for understanding events shaping the world's economics.

Excellent book. Real life situations that teach successfully.......1996-05-20
This book is practical, and includes real life situations.
My students found it not only interesting because of the
authors writing style, but because they could understand
the pitfalls and other minefields that they will have to
face when they enter the field of business. I think the author did an excellent job.

Book Description
Only if they do the right thing at the right time will owners of small businesses succeed. Simple enough, but what are the factors in their psychological makeup that enable them to do it? Frese and his contributors have studied small businesses in four African countries from a psychological perspective--the first time this has been done--and report that it's the psychological aspects of their strategies, not just the strategies themselves, that contribute significantly to their success. They also prove that many of the stereotypes that seem to characterize the owners of microbusinesses are clearly incorrect. Executives, analysts, bankers, international entrepreneurs, and their academic colleagues will discover that many of the conclusions they have drawn from previous studies can not be generalized. Only by separating those that can be generalized from those that can not, can we get a true understanding of the small business entrepreneurial dynamic. Frese and his colleagues focus on South Africa, Zimbabwe, Uganda, and Zambia to produce a clear overview of the research on microbusiness and entrepreneurship in developing countries. They find that psychological strategies are closely related to entrepreneurial success, but because conditions in these countries differ widely, the particulars of certain strategies and their effectiveness may also differ. They show that a number of ideas prevalent among professionals and entrepreneurship researchers in developing countries need to be challenged. Among them, that microenterprise owners who started their companies because they were unemployed do worse than those who started for other, more "positive" reasons. Also, that human capital (education) represents the most important set of variables to be considered for success (it isn't), or that employing family members decreases success (it doesn't). Well written and impeccably researched, the book is an essential contribution to corporate and academic libraries, as well as to the knowledge of individuals in business, psychology, entrepreneurial and regional studies, and related fields.

Book Description
This book focuses on the fundamental tools and ideas that are generally used in the handwriting recognition field. Though one of the oldest fields of computer pattern recognition, this topic is now attracting growing numbers of researchers in universities and development engineers in industry. The volume is based on a NATO Advanced Study Institute that took place in France in 1993. The most important algorithms for data acquisition, preprocessing, feature extraction, and classification, and the commonest database and devices for on-line and off-line recognition are presented. The role of parallel machines and special networks in solving problems in the field are also discussed.

Customer Reviews:
This is the worst book I've seen regarding this topic!.......2006-12-28
Wow - so this guy spent the time getting US Government pamphlets and putting them in book form? AMAZING! And amazingly stupid! His intro makes a big deal about not getting sucked into overseas employment scams and then he does the same thing! Anyone interested in getting a book of pamphlets that can easily be found on the net? You can HAVE mine for free!
Decent reference, but no context.......2004-12-12
I was expecting a bit more from a book calling itself an "Essential Guide". The whole book is basically a collection of 15 documents taken from sources like the US state department and the IRS. They cover taxation, emigration, what to do if you get arrested and a bunch of other legalistic things relating to being abroad. Unfortunately, that's all it has: the documents. There is no commentary, so you're left reading government documents that are written like stereo instructions. About 60 of the 160 or so pages are tax instructions...basically reprints of the expat equivalent of 1040 instructions. While I haven't checked, these seem like the kind of documents that a) change relatively often and b) can be obtained for free if you need them.
Bottom line: This is a good book to have on the shelf as a reference you hope to never have to use. As for providing you with a practical guide to living and working overseas, try something like the Expert Expatriate.

Customer Reviews:
A Must Read!.......2007-09-24
One of the best books I have ever read on investing. I have been recommending it to everyone I know.
Can't give this book enough stars.......2007-08-23
I wish every investor would read this book. Well, maybe not because I feel like I have a leg up on every other investor who believes he can time the market, get rich quick, or knows where the market is heading (well, after reading this book you'll see where the market is heading over the long term, and long term does not mean 6 months). This is by far the best book I've ever read, I cannot express enough how this book has open my eyes to investing, trading, saving for retirement, planning for the future, etc. Anybody who is at all interested in any sorts of financials, saving money for retirement, day trading, investing in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, etc. this is the first book you should read. I would then recommend reading...
Common Sense on Mutual Funds
A Random Walk Down Wallstreet
The Future for Investors
The Intelligent Investor
The Smartest Investment Book You'll Ever Read
The Boglehead's Guide to Investing
Essential Reading for Investors.......2007-06-14
The title led me to believe this recommended book would be a boring waste of time, but I found it to be a summary of many books I'd already read.
Many of the books it recommends as further reading I've already digested and I'll say this book does a good job of summarizing the major points of those books.
I'm a believer that it is hard to beat the indicies over time and don't try anymore.
Fabulous overview of investing fundamentals.......2007-04-13
I'm a beginning investor who was tired of piecemeal advice. This book saved me a lot of headaches. It taught me the basic fundamentals of investing, so I was able to reconcile the often conflicting advice I received from other people. Bernstein uses many fascinating historical examples to illustrate these basic principles. Although there's no formula for becoming rich, he shows the average investor how to make wise decisions for strategic portfolio growth. Overall, I found this book very useful.
Get this book NOW!.......2007-03-24
If you are even slightly considering purchasing this book, get it NOW. It was a very fast read (I finished it in 3 days) due to the writer's natural style, and it will open your eyes to things like actively managed funds vs. index funds, fees associated with mutual funds, and the importance of asset allocation and diversification. I completely changed my long-term investment strategy after reading this book and I already feel like I am doing better than I had been for the past few years as far as increasing my portfolio's return while lowering its risk. Like I said, get this book now. I am getting a few copies for friends that deserve to make more money over the long term and I don't want to see make the same mistakes I did like paying for actively managed mutual funds with high fees that don't even perform well as the market!
Book Description
This book presents an easy-to-follow, step-by-step program for achieving long-term investing success.
Customer Reviews:
The best book on investment ever.......2007-06-12
This book is superbly written and can enormously benefit all investors whether novices or experts. It is patrticularly suited for investors who want to manage their own money.
It starts with pillar one(the theory) and explains asset alloction with scientific and historical data that are convincing. It explains the risk and reward of diferrent asset classes throughout history.Diversification into domestic stock, international and fixed assets are explained with historical returns and asset correlation.
The chapters on history of the different markets are excellent and tell you what to expect in the short, medium, and long run.
Behaviour finance discusses the mistake investors almost always make, following their intuition and the conventional wisdom of the era, and how to realize them and avoid them.
Withdrawing money in retirement is discussed in great detail with different scenarios, very useful.
The book is eminently readable; I have read it 3 times to reinforce some tough to implement ideas, including rebalancing, not selling in a panic, and to look at stocks as if they were tomatoes. Try to buy them when the're cheap and on sale.
After reading over 50 books on investments, this is the one to go to and to recommend to friends. You will not be disappointed
Must Read.......2007-03-09
One of the best investment books I have read. It is a must read for all the investors.
Four Pillars.......2006-04-18
The "Four Pillars of Investing" CD was very useful. Very easy to follow the basic fundamentals of investing. Explored some complex issues but broke each idea down to its most fundamental form. Well worth listening to for the beginner or intermediate investor.
From an Information hound.......2006-03-29
Read this book as I was researching the topic of Index-funds. I have to say the first section has excellent historical perspective, to start your understanding of why Index funds are statistically more of a sure thing, than most mutual funds. The book should be a "MUST READ' for all beginners, AND to anyone who has spent any time investing and scratching their head wondering why they're not doing better. There's a reason - your part of 'the Market', which is made of both winners and losers. I get the idea that I'll be going back to this book from time to time, as a way to remind me of all the things I've forgotten along the way. A solid 4, maybe even 5 stars... enjoy.
Customer Reviews:
Worth every penny!!.......1999-10-10
Yes, this book is a bit expensive, but worth every penny! It is an excellent written and photographc history of one of the greatest corportaions in US history. As a steel industry historian and collector my standards are very high and this book is better than my expectations. Lavishly illustrated and documented, this book belongs on the bookshelf of anyone interested in the steel industry. Unfortunately, the story of J&L has a sad ending, but this wonderful book will keep the steel fires burning for generations.
