Having read several books on the move to EMU, this is definitely one of the most thoughtful and incisive (and by far the best written!!). Clearly the French perspective on the EMS and EMU is absolutely crucial to understanding why European monetary integration happened at all. Well done! This book enters into impressive detail about the French perspective but places the development of French policy clearly in the context of wider European developments so that the non-specialist can follow the text and learn about monetary integration more generally.

A detailed yet wonderfully readable account of the development of French policy on European monetary cooperation and integration from 1968 to the start of European Monetary Union in 1999. If you want to understand why the Europeans (led by the French) moved to EMU look no further. Unlike many accounts of the move to EMU, this book is neither too theoretical nor too economics-orientated. Howarth's convincing study is set in the context of French economic power objectives in relation to the Americans and the Germans.

By the way, there is some mistake in the book.
Page 48, Figure 3.3: The 'pending read state' is not copied to 'actual read state' upon receiving a change cipher spec(message number 6) from the client. Fortunately, it is correct in page Page 50, Table 3.6, step 6.
Good programmers SSL/TLS reference.......2000-10-31
Anyone who has ordered a book from Amazon.com or made a stock trade via an online broker has used SSL, or Secure Socket Layer. SSL, created by Netscape for managing the security of transmissions on the Internet, is a method of encrypting sensitive data. The "socket" part of the term refers to the sockets network transmission method of passing data back and forth between a client and a server program on a network. SSL is ubiquitous; it is an essential part of every browser shipped today.
SSL and TLS (Transport Layer Security) are essentially the same protocol. While SSL was originally designed by Netscape, the company has since offered SSL as a proposed standard protocol to the World Wide Web Consortium and the Internet Engineering Task Force, and it has since been renamed TLS.
SSL and TLS Essentials provides a thorough look into the inner workings of SSL. The book assumes a basic understanding of cryptography and gets right into the nitty-gritty of SSL functionality. The book is designed for those who need an in-depth and comprehensive look at the inner workings and mechanics of SSL, such as system administrators of e-commerce systems or SSL programmers.

Good overview, no samples, little HTTP detail, poor dev supp.......2000-07-20
I got this book to enable SSL support for a custom built web server and web proxy. There are no SSL conversation samples in this book, although conversations are documented and the details are described. There is also very little help for HTTP-specific scenarios (everyone knows HTTP is the biggest user of SSL), especially HTTP proxy servers, documenting any gotchas and how-tos. I'm having a heck of a time getting my proxy server written in Java to facilitate communications between the web server and the web client--one is sending an unexpected EOF and killing the conversation, and I don't know why. The client handshakes and recieves a certificate, but fails to reconnect and handshake again while using the newly recieved certificate. This book doesn't help me in this matter at all. If it's documented in here, it's buried in too much text, blabbering, and descriptions, and is not properly indexed or diagramed, etc. I've spent days trying to get past this road block, and this book was my last hope, but unfortunately didn't provide much hope at all.
This book would be best accompanied with a code samples guide.

Waste of paper.......2003-12-22
I think positive reviews for these books come from "Vault Staff" The book is tiny and thin, with doublespaced paragraphs to attempt to beef it up. So, each page is in this book has approximately 1/3 of a page's worth of information.
Having said that, we are treated to about 20 pages of information on the financial industry. We are treated to information like "the stock market is where shares of stock - pieces of ownership in companies - are traded every day." No mention of currency markets.
Then, we have 30 pages listing the jobs. The jobs listed include "trader" and each of one, yes one SHORT paragraph describing what they do.
Finally, a list of investment banks (Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley) with a 1 to 3 pages describing what it's like to work there (long hours).
Most of this information is common knowledge to people who have half a clue about the industry - TIAA pays less than Goldman: who knew?
One great thing about this book is the advertisements: Not just for other Vault products and sites, but for a few investment banks and recruiters - this may be be the opportunity the readers are hoping for.

I don't normally write reviews, but I just got this book and had to write. The book has detailed insider accounts of life inside every major investment banking firms, including its history, areas of specialization, and tips on the hiring and interviewing process. Highly recommended for job seekers and consultants alike.
Essential resource for banking jobs.......2001-09-09
I found this book to be immensely helpful to distinguishing the various investment banks and commercial banks. There are also specific tips for each company on what they look for in the job interview. Particularly as wall street is downsizing, I think the Vault book provided me with the edge I needed to land my job in a tough job market.

Echocardiography.org is a multimedia publishing company which was founded in 1998 to meet a consumer demand for education in the field of transesophageal echocardiography. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is an ultrasound diagnostic technique for obtaining real-time images of the heart and great vessels from a transducer positioned within the esophagus. This technique receives widespread application in the perioperative care of critically ill patients. The company has two divisions, namely, a research unit based in New Haven, Connecticut, and a production and distribution unit based in Silver Spring, Maryland. The company product consists of 6 hours of videotape and a book which describe TEE techniques. The target market consists of physicians who wish to develop or maintain expertise in TEE. Initial company efforts have focused on developing a product, and determining the logistics of test marketing and distributing the product to a market niche of cardiac anesthesiologists, a subset of consumers who would be expected to be particularly receptive to the product. Promotional methods included selective mass mailings, lecture promotion, and Internet marketing. Test marketing of the product resulted in 99 sales of complete videotape sets in 6 months of operations. Most purchases were made by groups of physicians, rather than by individual physicians, a factor which necessitated downward revision of the size of the residual market. This suggested that efforts be made to expand the size of the potential market by also targeting both non-cardiac anesthesiologists and physicians from subspecialties other than anesthesiology. A second focus of test marketing had been to determine an optimal price for the videotapes. Results suggested that price was not a major purchasing variable, and that it would be reasonable to set the price for subsequent marketing at, or above, the price previously demanded. Finally, despite the small number of sales involved, the distribution channel for the videotapes did not function seamlessly, and requires further attention.Projected plans for the future include placing a major emphasis on Internet marketing from established e-commerce sites, both in the US and overseas, and annual release of product upgrades to reflect consumer needs, as determined by feedback from a database of existing consumers, and further development of an existing public service Internet web site, also termed Echocardiography.org.

This book gives a detailed look into the strategy behind a successful merger of medical science and the Internet. The author skillfully traces his product from an idea to a real-world business plan. Packed with insight and clearly written, the book can be used to build a knowledge base for the uninitiated in the business world, or to add to existing knowledge for the business expert. The author's writing reflects his depth of experience; he educates the reader on echocardiography (a field in which he is a pioneer) while incorporating freshness of idea and venue. Dr. Rafferty's book is amazingly thorough and concise, with new insights uncovered every time it is read. Echocardiography.org proved to be a fascinating look into the making of an equally fascinating company.
