    Book Description

    Multiply your money!

During a five-year period Stefan Bechtel achieved a cumulative return for his investments of over 1,250 percent with an average annual return for the same period of more than 68 percent. This charming, wise book imparts to the reader the simple, reliable, time-tested plan he used to dramatically multiplying his money.

It does not matter whether you have ten dollars or ten million dollars to invest. Each of the twelve chapters begins with a single, one-sentence lesson explaining a down-to-earth principle. Along the way the book shares a few thoughts about gardening, spirituality and life. Examples are:
Spend a lot of time preparing the soil. Successful investors spend time thoroughly researching a stock before they buy it.
Put a chair in your garden. Like gardeners, investors fuss and over-water and over-fertilize and just can't stop doing something. Instead, they should put a chair in their garden and calmly do absolutely nothing.
Don't eat your seed corn. Wise, long-term investors never spend their principle because that is what makes their "money garden" grow.

This fascinating, well-written little volume is investing made easy for those of us who aren't Warren Buffet, and may even be "investing-challenged." With excellent analogies and anecdotes drawn from his puttering around the garden, the author makes the seemingly daunting task of what to do with one's - and one's family's - cherished and hard-earned savings seem not only less paralyzing, but even fun. And since the author writes informatively not only about finances but about gardening, it's a terrific "two-fer." Quite simply, it's the best investment I ever made.

5 out of 5 stars Wise, simple, incredibly useful.......2002-04-15

    I loved this little book!
I tend to be rather daunted by numbers in general and financial statements in particular, but this book discusses the basics of investing in terms of gardening -- tending the soil, planting the seed, waiting for the harvest -- rather than in terms of things that make my eyes glaze over. I've never heard investing described in this way, but it really helped me understand so much!

    Book Description

The sudden drop in America's productivity rate beginning in the early 1970s and the simultaneous increase in income inequality made a generation of American economists pessimistic about the nation's ability to grow faster or to deal with the growing gap between the rich and everyone else. Barry Bluestone and Bennett Harrison review the historical record and offer an elegant explanation of why the productivity drought occurred and why it is finally over. The potential for a sustained era of economic expansion more equitably shared is on the horizon, thanks to the revolution in computer and information technology that has now come of age.But potential, the authors argue, is one thing; realization is another. Though optimistic about the productivity boom, Bluestone and Harrison do not believe that the payoff to the technology revolution can be fully realized without a sea change in economic policy. Their discerning analysis reveals that the current obsession with federal debt reduction and inflation control -- the very essence of what they call the "Wall Street model" -- will in fact sabotage growth. Only by embracing a "Main Street model" that revitalizes government-sponsored R&D, public infrastructure, education, and training -- all of which have helped underwrite spectacular economic growth spurts in the past -- can America reach its potential for equitable expansion in the coming century. Flying in the face of the ruling economic orthodoxy, GROWING PROSPERITY is a beautifully argued work that goes beyond critique to envision a way to add $3.2 trillion to the economy over the coming decade. With its provocative thesis and its clear prescriptive message, it will be of great interest to everyone with a stake in our economic future.

3 out of 5 stars A New Model for Economic Growth.......2002-12-04

We've all heard about the great economic miracle of the past twenty years. What we haven't heard, though, is that the rate of growth has significantly slowed from pre-1973 levels. This book explains why, and shows that we may be able to achieve high growth rates again. The authors criticize the "Wall Street Model" of growth, which stresses low inflation and enhanced savings. This model, they say, leads to increased inequality and slower growth. The authors present an alternative "Main Street Model" which instead stresses technological innovation as the main driver of growth. The keys to increasing technological innovation are public investments in R&D and infrastructure, as well as increasing demand through higher minimum wages and a stronger role for unions. This book coherently presents this new model of growth and explains why the Wall Street model is flawed. This book has an unashamedly left-wing bias and some people may be put off by the more opinionated parts of this book. I found myself wishing the authors would stick to facts instead of shoving ideas in your face that can't be backed up. In one part of the book the authors discuss the "neoclassical growth syllogism" and try to show how flawed it is. To do this, they examine each premise of the syllogism and assign a seemingly arbitrary percentage describing how true the premise is. You just can't do that. If you give me a number, you better be able to support it with facts or else you're wasting my time. These authors are probably well educated and they should know better than to whimsically pull numbers out of their [fundaments.]

4 out of 5 stars Throwing light on technological long waves........2000-04-24

Using historical data on the rate of increase of productivity, these authors build a convincing case that the United States is near the beginning of an economic boom based on information technlogy. They go well beyond most economists in explaining the nature of economic long waves (also called Kondratieff waves). They then explain in depth how current government economic policies are misdirected in terms of maximizing this pattern of economic growth.

                  Book Description

Despite the recent success of welfare reform in moving people off public assistance and into jobs, most of America's working poor are still unable to accumulate even the most minimal of assets. Even when they are getting by, they lack many of the resources—tangible and intangible—that provide middle-class Americans with a sense of security, stability, and a stake in the future. In Owning Up, Michelle Miller-Adams demonstrates how asset-building programs, used in combination with traditional income-based support, can be an effective means for helping millions of American out of poverty.

Miller-Adams expands the traditional concept of assets to encompass a range of tools, experiences, resources, and support systems that are necessary if asset building is to serve as an effective anti-poverty strategy. She identifies four types of assets that can represent sources of wealth for low-income individuals and communities: economic human social, and natural assets. Economic assets include equity, retirement savings, and other financial holdings. Human assets include education, knowledge, skills, and talents. Included among social assets are the networks of trust and reciprocity that bind communities together. Natural assets include the land, water, air and other natural resources we depend on for survival.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book Study Book.......2007-02-19

As a non-profit executive director, I have found the book study format to be a great way to engage my Board of Directors in issues that we work on. Dr. Miller-Adams' book is set up very well for this activity, is well written for understanding issues, and provides positive, replicable examples of organizations helping low income Americans build their assets. Written in a readable style, it is not intimidating for the non social worker. The book is politically neutral and can easily be used by many mainstream organizations to move forward on an issue that is truly important for America.

As all the editions that preceded this one, there's a list of all the universities under the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), the major contact details for all universities in Commonwealth / ex-Commonwealth countries, and full departmental contact details for those who are ACU's members. The universities are listed under sections, one for each country. At the beginning of each section there's a short informative history of HE institutions in the country.
OK. So it's useful, but in this age when the majority, if not all, of HE institutions are online and most departments have their own webpage, what is the point of having this big giant book (in 3 volumes, if I remember correctly) when you already have a big computer with internet connection sitting on your desk and you're dying for some extra desk space?

You will be able to improve your relationship with the criticizer, and learn something valuable for yourself. You will also be in a good position to encourage your criticizer to deliver "the goods" next time in a more helpful manner.

5 out of 5 stars If only I had read this years ago..........2001-11-13

This short, simple book has really made a difference in my life. I always used to get defensive when criticized and immediately try to shoot down the other person, explain myself or rationalize my own behavior. This book showed me why it makes sense to handle criticisim in a different way. (I won't give the skills away here, because Clinard explains them so well in the book. You'll have to read it!) The skills are very simple, and if you can go against your initial reactions to criticism and use these skills, it really works like magic in your interpersonal relationships. WELL worth the (price)!

                          Book Description

Baseball’s winter meetings have never before been captured from the inside—set against the backdrop of big league owners, executives, and players surrounded by money and beat writers—with everyone pushing to get a little attention, wealth, or talent. Rumors fly, journalists jabber, cameras flash as everyone tries to figure out what’s going on inside the halls of the Opryland Hotel.

Written by an insider who started on the outside, Getting in the Game takes the reader inside the scramble to get a job in the baseball industry by following the stories of three job seekers hoping to break into the game as announcers, front office staff, or anything they can get. Lewin also probes the motivations and perspectives of three baseball executives looking to hire new employees as they sort through the piles of résumés, tapes, and CDs to get down to their short lists of prospective candidates.

Told in a real-time diary format, Lewin occasionally breaks from the action to explain some of the back stories everyone on the inside already knows: How did minor league baseball go from minor league to big business? What’s going on in the various seminars? Lewin also interviews a few baseball lifers, pays a visit to the Winter Meetings Trade Show (where teams pick their tchotchkes for their summer giveaways), and tells you about the secret lives of mascots.

                          4 out of 5 stars Very nice first-hand account.......2007-04-24

A lot of reviews that I have read about this book center around the fact that it wasn't what they expected, and that is fine. But it just confuses me and I don't understand what people were, in fact, expecting.

For me, I used this book as a tool in realizing the job market out there for younger adults, like myself, that wish to get into this type of business. And it worked especially well because it was all about the winter meetings and the job fair that takes place there. The author provides you with a great first-hand experience of the inner workings that go on there and the hard work it takes to even get an interview with a potential employer.

What the book does best is show you the struggle to find a job in the business on two different extremes. One is attempting to break in by being in broadcasting, while the other is trying to be a mascot. If there are two jobs in sports that are anymore different, I'd like to see it.

For someone looking to get into sports, baseball in particular, this book serves as one of the best learning tools I've come across. You can see up close what it takes to just get your foot in the door. Nothing comes easy in this business and the characters in this book prove it. Following their adventures through the job fair gave me an extra edge I would need when I enter the real world.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining look at getting into minor league baseball.......2004-01-25

Josh Lewin is the regular play-by-play broadcaster for the Texas Rangers. This past fall, he put out a book called "Getting in the Game: Inside Baseball's Winter Meetings". This is the story of both the outside and inside of some folks trying to break into baseball to follow a dream. It deals with how some kids (and not kids) try to get broadcasting, mascot jobs, or just about anything with a minor league team.

That sound boring? It's not. The book has a nice sense of humour about it, and there's some wonderfully funny stories about what goes on at these things (I loved the potato story a lot, as well as numerous others). Josh Lewin has a very entertaining way of broadcasting baseball games, and he seems to have tied up several stories regarding how to break in, how those who hire do the hiring, and the tribulations of some job seekers rushing all over themselves to get low paying or even no paying jobs, just to say they have a job in baseball.

If there's one criticism of the book, it's that I found it hard to follow sometimes where things were going. This isn't a fiction, so things aren't going to always be neatly in a row - but I got confused sometimes as to who was who in terms of the job seekers. But that's a minor quibble, it might just be me not paying attention well enough.

A nice bonus to me was some talk with Dave Raymond, the man who originated the Philly Phanatic character. As I'm from Philadelphia, and grew up with the Phanatic, it was nice to hear some stuff from Mr. Raymond. It's not like he's the main crux of the book (far from it), but it was nice to see him pop up here.

If you like to follow the inner workings of baseball, you're sure to love this book. If you're the kind of casual baseball fan who has trouble watching the game on TV, or when they're at the park gets more worked up going for beer and hot dogs, this might not be for you, then.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious look at minor league baseball.......2003-11-25

Josh Lewin is a well-recognized broadcaster who obviously started from the bottom up. His insights, good humor and cheers for those going throught what he has experienced are exemplary. He loves our national pastime and this infused spirit is obvious throughout. It's a side of baseball about which I knew little and informs a good deal of what is happening at the major league level. A bravura performance!

                          5 out of 5 stars A truly fun read!!!.......2003-11-11

I'm not a rabid baseball fan, but I REALLY enjoyed this book! I loved the behind-the-scenes peek into the winter meetings that the author provided. The writing was vivid, the humor delightful, and the personal stories compelling and poignant. I don't usually laugh out loud when I'm reading, but I couldn't stop myself.... I hope we'll see more from Josh Lewin! He really knows the game!

3 out of 5 stars An Interesting Read on Minor League Baseball.......2003-11-04

Getting in the Game is an interesting read for those who are fans of minor league baseball. It gives a insider's view of how minor league baseball has become so enormously popular as a low-budget, family-oriented entertainment venue. There are interviews with general managers, mascots and announcers with a humorous look at the extremes a team will go to attract fans. Woven through the book is the stories of a few young people trying to beat the odds and land an entry-level job at the employment fair of the 2002 Winter Baseball Meetings. Josh has narrated their entire weekend of networking, "resume-dropping" and interview anxiety with humor and insight. The reader feels as though they are a mouse watching and listening to all the interesting things going on at the Opryland Hotel during the Winter Meetings.

                            Book Description

Labor’s War at Home examines a critical period in American political and labour history, beginning with the outbreak of war in Europe in 1939 through the wave of major industrial strikes that followed the war and accompanied the reconversion to a peacetime economy. Professor Lichtenstein is concerned both with the internal organizations and social dynamics of the labor movement (especially the Congress of Industrial Organizations), and with the relationship between the CIO, as well as other bodies of organized labor, and the Roosevelt administration. He argues that tensions within the labor movement and within the ranks of American business profoundly affected government policy during the war and the nature of organized labor’s political arrangements worked out during the war established the foundations of social stability and labor politics that came to characterize the postwar world.
