Book Description
The modern theory of threats in bargaining situations is presented in a unified and systematic treatment that puts the existing literature in a new perspective. Harold Houba and Wilko Bolt provide a masterful synthesis of the fundamental results obtained in the rapidly expanding game-theoretic literature. The relative impacts of the fundamental forces on the bargaining outcome are discussed and related to the visions expressed by Nobel-laureate John Nash. Many topics -such as robustness of the results with respect to the diversity of known bargaining procedures, the role of commitment and policy bargaining situations- receive their most extensive treatment to date.
Credible Threats in Negotiations is suitable as a textbook for graduate students in economic theory and other social sciences and a necessity as a resource for scholars interested in bargaining situations.

Book Description
Economic and monetary union (EMU) will have far-reaching consequences for participating nations. This book contains a unique and editorially neutral collection of key arguments favoring and opposing membership. The economic and policy implications are evaluated by distinguished economists, while the impact upon national sovereignty and the world of work is debated by prominent MPs and representatives of business and trade union organizations.
Customer Reviews:
Useful contribution to vital debate.......2001-05-17
This is a fascinating collection of articles on the vital question - should Britain enter the euro? Nine economists evaluate the economic and policy implications of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). Three somewhat atypical representatives of business - Stephen Davies of the Institute of Directors, and the Lords Haskins and Simon - discuss its likely effect on British firms. Couldn't they find anybody from manufacturing industry?
Unfortunately, the editors include only two trade unionists, both of whom support EMU. Why didn't they find someone to speak for the majority of trade union members who oppose it? Finally, four MPs discuss its effect upon national sovereignty.
The contribution by John Edmonds, the GMB's General Secretary, is most revealing. He argues for conditionally supporting EMU. Yet he admits, "The tendency in any negotiations is for conditions to be successively stripped away until all that remains is a stark position of support covered by a few words of threadbare rhetoric." Quite!
The editors write that entering EMU "is intended to be a one-way shift towards future economic integration." But that is not all that EMU means: Edmonds openly says that he wants to `achieve extensive political union'. That is why he supports our entry into the euro: the euro was, until recently, the key motor for driving us all into the single European state that the EU's leaders all want.
Blair has now had to accept that he cannot presently win a referendum on the euro. However, this does not mean that he will respect our wishes in future. The EU's leaders can advance on many different fronts and employ many different devices to form a single European state: the Euro-army, the Charter of Fundamental Rights, Corpus Juris, a single taxation policy, etc.
The majority of the British people do not want to enter the euro. Doesn't democracy have something to do with what people want?

Those who can ignore the rather garish cover on this book will find a solid, straightforward guide to making winning trades in even the most bearish of markets. The author, who millions of insomniacs know through his middle-of-the-night infomercials, writes with a highly personal voice that some may find a bit grating, but his rags-to-riches story is compelling and needs to be told.
In a nutshell, Michael Parness went from living on a park bench in Brooklyn to a summa cum laude degree from Hunter College in New York City to founding a successful sports memorabilia company. After making $150,000 in that business, he followed his broker's advice in 1998 and ended up losing virtually his entire nest egg. Since then, he has invested carefully after studying media reports and understanding "market psychology." Now a broker-averse multimillionaire, he shares with readers a number of strategies that have worked for him in both bull and bear markets.
Augmented with exercises that truly help readers determine their own level of risk aversion, this guide shows online traders and, particularly, investment clubs exactly how market psychology drives daily and cyclical market moves. As Parness says, "I'm not mechanical, and I'm not good at figuring out technical stuff like computers or plumbing or chain saws, but I can figure out how things measure up in terms of probability. And probability is what trading is all about."
A few too many ka-chingos and wowsas mar an otherwise informed writing style, but nevertheless the book offers some excellent insight into how the market actually works, and how one can make money using that insight. Those looking for a serious study of economic trends and forecasts may want to look elsewhere, but readers interested in a breezy, anecdotal read about market bubbles and bursts will be entertained and more than likely enlightened. --Charles Decker
Book Description
In 1988, Michael Parness followed a stockbroker's advice and lost nearly all of his nest egg of $150,000. In 1999, he opened an online brokerage account and set out to get his money back. In fifteen months, he turned $33,000 into $7 million, started the online trading Web site TrendFund.com, and developed a trading strategy that delivers profits in both bull and bear markets.
In Rule the Freakin' Markets, Parness uses visual aids and practice exercises to show online traders and investors how to:
- Practice responsible trading techniques that maximize reward and limit risk
- Avoid the "Seven Deadly Sins Plus Fear" that block success in the market
- Protect investments no matter what the market does
- Understand how market technology drives daily and cyclical market moves
- Avoid the pitfalls of trading in cyberspace
- Recover and learn from significant losses
- Strategize and anticipate, rather than overreact or freeze, when change occurs
- And finally, live full and satisfying lives as traders
With its lively tone and refreshing approach to trading and investing, Rule the Freakin' Markets is an essential guide to profiting from today's turbulent market.

Many Happy Returns!.......2007-08-03
Trading is War.
And War, to defer to General William Tecumseh Sherman, is Hell. So it follows, then, that Trading is Hell.
But Hell doesn't have to be unprofitable, or at least that's the gist of Michael Parness's juicy little battle manual for money-making trading "Rule the Freaking Markets!".
Parness managed to parlay roughly 30 grand into 7 million in just a little over 15 months, using the techniques he sets forth in this little book. No, this isn't a painstaking tactical recreation, trade by trade and move by move---if you're looking for that, look elsewhere.
Instead, Parness has written a kind of Trading 101, a hands-on, no-nonsense, meat and potatoes primer that will give novices everything they really need to know before they move into the close combat of trading, and give vets a fresh perspective. There are a few simple, but crucial themes in "Rule the Freakin' Markets", points you need to know to survive and thrive in the market, and Parness drives them home.
Some of them are so simple, basic, and useful enough that they are typically ignored---but just thinking back to this book saved me thousands of dollars, making this a tasty read that more than pays for itself in a few trades.
Now, "Rule the Freakin' Markets" is not rocket science. Far from it. It's not about esoteric hedging and option speculation strategies. You'll find no abstruse charting diagrams mapping out regions of support and resistance and an entire vast nebula of trading constellations: no winged double dip upper boundary flanges or inverted-middle-finger reverses here, folks.
What you will find is a man who has harnessed the stock market to achieve his wildest dreams, and who has put together a no-nonsense, highly engaging, very practical little battlefield manual in helping you do the same. Michael Parness, a guy who by his own admission was once living on the street in New York City, His point is brutally simple: if he did it, you can too. That is, if you take its beguilingly simple message to heart.
Let's back up a step.
As the Roman Emperor Augustus was fond of saying, 'Sancta Simplicitas', Latin for "Keep it Simple, Stupid". I'm always asked for advice on stockpicking, and when I offer my standard rejoinder: "buy low, sell high", people get offended. They assume I'm insulting them. "What? *Everybody* knows that"!", they say.
But to judge from what you see and hear in the market, everybody doesn't. Quite the contrary. People act on impulse, move on 'tips', plunging in to buy a hot tech stop at the top of its range, cringing as it plummets, wiping out thousands of those impulse greenbacks---then acting out of fear and selling everything, just before the market turns back up.
Sound familiar?
If it does, spend a quality hour or two with Parness: the sections on shorting stocks and placing stops can be both lifesavers and money-makers, and they're worth the price of admission alone.
Good Hunting.
JSG
Great for beginners.......2007-05-28
I believe this would be a great book for beginners. Parness has written an entertaining book that covers a lot of the basics on emotional control and money management in trading stocks for a quick profit. He explains the seven deadly sins of trading stocks that we must not commit:
GREED, PRIDE, LUST, ENVY, GLUTTONY, SLOTH, and WRATH, plus FEAR. These are absolutely behaviors that will cause you to lose money in the markets. He advises of 5 ways NOT to find stock picks:
Stock tips are for losers.
Do not listen to idle chat from the hopeful and naive.
Watch out for manipulation from pump and dumpers.
Paid stock promoters. Analysts, etc.
Do not trade OTC/BB stocks
The book was short on any kind of method to find stocks, and how to trade them. It just lays out the basics.
Nice little book to get started with for beginners, but move on to read Alexander Elder's and William O' Neal's books they will take you the rest of the way.
An HONEST, objective review: THIS BOOK IS JUNK!.......2007-04-01
I bought this book for the wrong reasons: I saw so much controversy between the reviews that I was tempted to take a peek myself; and honestly, it was selling for only $2.00! I figured, how bad could it be? Even if there is one small nugget in this book, one insight that could help me with a SINGLE trade, the $2.00 would be worth it. Well, here is the low-down:
1. If you are someone who barely knows the difference between stocks and bonds, then maybe (just maybe) you could learn something. If you are a 65-year old retired homemaker and are curious what this "darned stock stuff" is all about, this book is for you. In sum, folks, this is TRADING 1.0001A. And guess what? In a few short years you could actually graduate to TRADING 101 !!!!!
2. If you are a serious stock or options trader (like myself), there is NOTHING of any VALUE in this book at all! There is not a ***SINGLE*** stock setup mentioned that would help you with ANY trade.
3. Sure, there are a lot of words in this book. Lot of irrelevant junk. For example, here is a sample of subsections in Chapter 13 (read and weep!)
Section 13.3 Live a physically healthy life
Section 13.4 Live a spiritually healthy life
Section 13.5 Eat well
Wow! Can you believe this? At this rate, in his next book, maybe Parness will include a chapter on changing diapers!!!
DO YOURSELF A FAVOR. PLEASE ***DON'T*** BUY THIS BOOK !!!!!
Not bad, not really good, just...okay.......2007-01-13
This is an unbiased review coming from someone who has no axe to grind against the author and who has never used his service. I read a lot of investing books and usually avoid works with titles such as this one for the simple fact that I seek advice with more substance than books such as these generally offer. I did pick this book up, however, and found it to be...well, mediocre. There's some decent advice here, albeit advice that anyone even remotely interested in trading should already know. The most fundamental basics are covered--basic money management, overcoming fear and greed, etc.--and there are a few perceptive insights offered through the course of the book, but for the most part this is one of many trading books that will give you just enough information to go out and get yourself killed trading.
That's not to say this is a bad book. I would classify this as the most simple and basic type of trading book out there--one you could read before reading any other book but not base your education upon. It's obvious from reading that Parness made his fortune during a time that is much different from now--during the dot com boom and subsequent crash. Things moved a lost faster then--things were different. As such the book is somewhat outdated. To Parness's credit, however, this book is much more than a shameless self-promotion of his website and services.
If you're interested in getting into trading you could do much worse than this book. You could also do much better. If you do decide to pick this one up, do it with the realization that you'll need to educate yourself much more before jumping headlong into the financial market.
If you are Trading in the Market, you are mad not to read this........2006-11-07
I have been reading financial and investment literature for the past two years now. This should be compulsory reading for traders, for three main reasons:
1. It contains no technical jargon and any technical terms used are defined fully.
2. The language and style are easy and accessible to all readers, not just the financially well versed, which makes it the best book for beginners.
3. Michael is a funny guy and makes you laugh as though you were reading a comedy. In case you were not aware, fun and excitement are the best learning emotional states.
By the way, I don't see how I or anyone else can actually lose in the market if we follow "The Rules". That's not to say, you will not have losing trades, but you will learn enough money management and trading savvy to ensure that overall you are a winner!

Great Aid for Those Who Hate to Write Letters.......2004-01-30
Bob Bly is well known in freelancing and copywriting circles, but his abilities probably aren't as well known outside those arenas. This book might just make him known to the average person or at least to the average business person (who in my experince usually hates having to write letters).
Bly offers tips on writing letters of all types and includes some 300 samples of business and personal correspondence easily used and adapted by the individual to suit their own purposes.
The book is particularly helpful for business people who may be trying to close a sale, answer a complaint, offer a product or service, or offer thanks.
Bly covers the nuts-and-bolts of letter writing as well as persuasive writing techniques. The book is filled with proven styles for attention-grabbing introductions, persuasive arguments, memorable phrases, and strong closings. It covers a wide gamut of types of letters, ranging from job hunting, sales, and fundraising to responding to criticism, expressing sympathy, and declining an offer.
If you hate having to write letters, whether for personal or business purposes, this book needs to be sitting on your shelf.

Spamalot.......2005-06-25
Rabid book-acquirer that I am, I recently added THE NEW AMERICAN HANDBOOK OF LETTER WRITING to my collection, at least partly because of its drastically reduced pricing at the recent closing of my local mall bookstore. Incidentally, the death of this particular bookstore had been long in coming. With a Borders across the street, I was not particularly alarmed or concerned at the little drama I was witnessing. The reductions began several weeks prior to the expected closing with 25% off everything in stock. In the weeks to come, I made a point of malling in its general vicinity so as to check in periodically as the store emptied and the reductions rose. Like the shark I am, I entered gleefully to participate in the final dismemberment once the magic discount of 75% was reached. So, that's the story of how I came to own this book.
I am as yet undecided whether a book on letter writing should be derided as an anachronism, or extolled as something virtuous yet woefully absent from today's bookshelves. Sadly, I believe there are far too many modern households lacking bookshelves at all or, if bookshelves are indeed present, they are more likely to hold vintage Star Wars toys (collectables?) or porcelain pig figurines rather than books. If you hold to the theory that any book is better than no book, then this book undoubtedly has some merit. However, it was not exactly what I thought it would be. I guess I was expecting a quainter book that brought back a bit of the golden age of letter writing: courting the girl next door or describing in vivid detail the most wonderful time you and Mumsy are having on the continent and just who you happened to have met on the steamship passage over. What I got, disappointingly, was a book of business form letters. Here is a sample:
"Dear Mary Daylily:
I'd like to add your name to our Professional Educator subscription list--at no cost to you--for four months! That's right, four free issues without any obligation..." well, you can imagine how that letter proceeds. Is this a guide for the aspiring form-letter marketeer or--dare I say it aloud--spammer?
You will find no discussions of style in this book. A little theory of letter writing would have been nice. You won't find that here. What you will find is a collection of sample letters, just one of each type, and the letters tend to be somewhat dry. Complaint letter? One example. Collection letter? One example. Wedding invitation? One example. Apology for a dog attack? One example.
To be fair, there is a chapter on message composition touching on word choice, conciseness, style, and other useful stuff. This makes the book almost worth its 75% markdown. Almost.
Dear Ms. DeVries:
I'm sorry to let you know that the 2nd edition book product we acquired two months ago has not met our expectations. Since your service personnel have been unable to correct the problems, we must conclude that your product was defective...
Sincerely,
Jeremy W. Forstadt
Enjoyable.......2004-10-08
I'm not really fond of technical books, because they're usually either very dry or very judgemental. In this case, neither of those descriptions fit. My manager showed me this book, among others, to see which ones I'd like to use as a reference for our office and I read the whole book INSTEAD of browsing through it. The author writes in a conversational and intelligent tone and makes me feel like I'm having a conversation at the nearest coffeehouse instead of some lecture room with the air conditioning on too high.
Another Gem from Devires.......2000-08-07
If you're a terrible letter writer, or just want to improve your skills..this book is for you! Devries is one of the best technical writer's of our time. This book is fully endorsed by me!

a generation raised with too much.......2007-07-16
Here is a book to kick start parents to stop spoiling and teaching kids that possessions represent love, personal significance or status.
The current generation of high school kids throws a tantrum when they aren't GIVEN 9 yes, given) a new car on their 16th birthday- and pay their own gas. well, theres only a parent to blame- stop buying and send them to work- thye truly feel entitled because they were raised on unearned praise and rewards- their language of love is things and they think their idientiy comes from having the right stiff. I see this in church kids and non-church kids. Wake up nation and reads this book
A must have for families!.......2004-01-14
Ellie Kay has done it again. In this book Ellie lays everything out on the table when it comes to teaching your child about finances. Funny thing though, I learned a thing or two myself! Every aspect is broken down from age zero to eighteen and beyond!
I immediately applied what I had learned on my children and saw a dramatic change within one week. You must get this book along with her other books, "Shop, Save and Share" and "A Womans Guide to Family Finance". Your family will thank you later!
A fan from Hong Kong.......2003-06-25
It's very nice to meet you here. I'm Jackie Ho from
Hong Kong. I'm just reading the book `Money Doesn't Grown On Trees'. It's really very useful. Actually I'm going to design and launch a class of `Money Education' to kids and teens. I want to tell them what the money is and teach them how to manage money, and also, make them more interests in math, logic, reading
comprehension, etc. This book gives me lots of ideas.
Thank you so much, Ms. Kay.
I would not recommend.......2003-04-01
I was looking for a book to help guide me and my husband to teach my child about allowance and money management. I had no idea that this is a religious based book. I am a Christian, but I don't believe that God is the answer to money questions. Furthermore, there is not any straight forward, helpful information. This book is mostly just vague ideas. I would not recommend this book
She's done it again!.......2003-03-18
Ellie is a gold mine of information regarding saving money and spending what we have wisely. I have 3 children and was pulling my hair out trying to teach them that the way to earning money is not by holding your hand out to daddy. I have read this book more times than I can count and have found and implemented many ideas. My 13 year old daughter is not very fond of her actually having to do something now but she can't hold her hand out forever. We have to remember that what we teach them now greatly effects their future. To have anything when you become an adult, you have to work and be on a budget. With the ideas Ellie has in her books, you can teach your children now. I don't want to see my children have a rough time when they are older because I gave them whatever they wanted when they were younger. I have noticed since my 7 year old has been working for that "I gotta have it toy", he takes care of them better and doesn't forget where he puts it.
Buying Ellie's books has been the best investment I could make to our budget. Thank's Ellie!

A memorable story.......2006-07-08
I read this book a few years ago and loved it. The story of the Texas and Pacific Coal and Oil company seems so typically American. From the crooked Yankee come South who recognizes the coal that was a nuisance to the farmer scratching out a living, the New York financiers who put the enterprise on a secure financial foundation and did very well by themselves in the process, the immigrant miners, prosperous company town, self-taught geololgist who opened up the Ranger oil field, a gas-pump juckey who earned a raise in the midst of the depression selling lube jobs and treating his wife to a mid-week hamburger, the names which dot Fort Worth buildings and streets, this book covers and links up an America and Texas from frontier to the outlines of its present corporate complexity.
