    Book Description

The airline industry has been buffeted by the forces of deregulation since the mid-1970s. Many new firms have entered, some with different price and operating philosophies and some of these have thrived. Other airlines have gone bankrupt. Overall the real cost of air travel has declined considerably; however, the effects have varied dramatically from market to market. Exactly how was this massive experiment envisioned and planned? How has it worked? And how will it work in the long run?

Deregulating the Airlines narrates and analyzes the decisions taken by the Civil Aeronautics Board during the transition to deregulation and the reasoning behind the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978. It provides many comparisons of the industry before and after deregulation and uses those data to test the various hypotheses that scholars and politicians have advanced about how markets would behave if regulation were removed. Its findings provide information on both the demand and the cost side that will be important in molding the long-run equilibrium of the industry, and it discusses how quickly the industry is moving toward that equilibrium.

For policymakers and students of regulation in particular, this study provides a unique case for contrasting the operation of an industry under close regulatory control and its operation free of such controls. It is able to make use of an unusually large volume of data on the costs, operations, and prices of individual firms to show how markets work and how regulation works.

The book's in-depth analysis of the impact of policy changes in the airline industry is drawn in part from the authors' active involvement in implementing the new policies. Elizabeth Bailey is Dean of the Graduate School of Industrial Administration at Carnegie-Mellon. Previously she was a commissioner and vice chairman at the Civil Aeronautics Board. Daniel Kaplan is director of the Board's Office of Economic Analysis. David R. Graham, manager of the Defense Economics Program at the Institute for Defense Analysis, was a Board economist.

Deregulating the Airlines is tenth in the series, Regulation of Economic Activity, edited by Richard Schmalensee.

        Book Description

John Maynard Keynes and Friedrich Hayek had serious differences of opinion when it came to assessing the fractured inter-war world. G. R. Steele picks apart this debate and argues persuasively that Hayek's outlook will prove to be the more enduring.

1 out of 5 stars How not to write a book on Keynes.......2004-09-05

There are just too many errors of commission and omission made in this book to justify purchasing it ,given its excessive price.First, contrary to Steele(S),the A Treatise on Probability(TP)was published in 1921,not 1920.(Steele,p.2). Second, the claim that Keynes "... studied economics only briefly..."(Steele,p.2) before 1906 is not supported by any evidence.Keynes completely mastered Marshall's Principles textbook ,as well as the 20 plus pages of single spaced mathematical footnotes contained in an appendix at the end of that textbook.Third, S's claim that theTP is"...an attempt to outline a theory of probability that might be applied to unique events in a social context...",(Steele,p.2)is false.Keynes's TP applies to all propositions about any and all events in all contexts because it is a general theory ,not only of probability, but also of decision making.Third,S's claim that Keynes reached the conclusion that"...time is more usefully employed in persuasion that(sic)in research based upon sound analysis"(Steele,p.3)is directly contrary to Keynes's argument that persuasion is needed to convince ordinary citizens and government officials to accept the sound analysis.Fourth, there is no support for Steele's claim that Keynes attempted"... to formalise a new non-deterministic method of economics(Fitzgibbons,1988:129)"(Steele,p.21).Finally, the claim that Keynes believed that "...short cuts across technical details do not matter"(Steele,p.22)for a theoretical analysis doesn't make any sense because chapters 20 and 21 of the General Theory contain all the details needed for a mathematically literate reader to follow Keynes's analysis. There are literally dozens of other errors scattered through out the book, such as the false claim that Keynes never defined "uncertainty"(lack of weight of evidence) in the TP(Steele,p.49).The potential book buyer can find Keynes's definition on page 315 of the TP in the last paragraph, where w is defined as being measured on the unit interval between 0 and 1,i.e.,0=

5 out of 5 stars An excellent XQuery starter book and reference.......2004-10-23

This book is a compact and thorough guide to XQuery. The Jonathan Robie tutorial in the beginning of the book is itself worth the overall price of the book.

4 out of 5 stars Nice coverage of XQuery/XPath.......2004-05-01

A very useful explanation of XQuery and how to use it to analyse XML data. The book shows how this can be done with or without a supporting XML Schema or DTD that describes the XML. The authors explain why this goes beyond a Google-type search. The latter does not (at least currently) know or use any structural information about data, primarily because it scans all types of mostly unstructured data.

But the rise of XML has driven demand for XQuery, to take advantage of this structure. The book also shows how XPath is used, as part of the XQuery implementation.

Another merit of the book is its good description of the difference between XQuery and XSLT. The latter also has been getting a lot of attention from programmers. But, as explained by the authors, XSLT is mainly used on document centric data, mostly to generate HTML. By contrast, XQuery has no such restriction.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent survey of a complex topic by some of the designers.......2004-04-30

Full disclosure: I know all of the authors and count them among my friends.

In spite of that, I can honestly say that I think this book is a very valuable guide to the emerging standard query language for XML. The insights provided by people who are actually doing the day-to-day design, and implementation in some cases, of this language are not available in any other XQuery book.

The various chapters of the book provide overviews, design precepts, detailed examples, and thorough explanations (even of subjects as arcane as the static typing rules of the language).

I enthusiastically encourage everybody interested in XQuery to add this book to their libraries.

4 out of 5 stars Good for XQuery side topics.......2004-03-14

This is a good book if you know what you are getting. If you are looking for a focused guide to XQuery practical applications you aren't going to like this book. It's worth repeating, this is not a general reference or introduction to XQuery. This is a set of articles on XQuery related topics. The first 'chapter' is an introduction to XQuery which is actually quite good. After that is a chapter on the history of XQuery. Then there is a chapter on XSLT and XPath, which is a nice, but brief, introduction to those topics. There is a section on the semantics of XQuery which is so thick you could cut it with a knife. The book finishes with two chapters on relational to XML mapping.

If you are a serious XQuery user, are interested in a case study in standards development, or are into relational theory this book is probably worth a look.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative set of essays.......2004-02-24

Simply good. A collection of essays written by so many well-known names in the industry covering various aspects of the XQuery language from a "A Guided Tour" to "Introduction to Formal Semantics". A book that would be very useful for people with XSLT background, and need more power to do their job. A book that closes the between Relational Databases and XML.

A good number of authors and innovators contributed materials to this book:
        - Don Chamberlin (an editor of the XML Query Use Cases, XQuery 1.0, XML Path Language 2.0 working drafts),
        - Denise Draper (one of the editors of XQuery 1.0 Formal Semantics),
        - Mary Fernandez (one of the editors of the working drafts of XQuery 1.0, XPath 2.0 Data Model, XML Path Language and XQuery 1.0 Formal Semantics),
        - Howard Katz (editor of this book)
        - Michael Kay (an editor of the XSLT, XSLT 2.0 and XQuery Serialization and XML Path Language 2.0 working drafts)
        - Jonathan Robie (an editor of XQuery 1.0, XML Query Requirements, XML Syntax for XQuery 1.0 and XPath 2.0 working drafts)
        - Michael Rys (an editor of the XQuery Formal Semantics, XML Syntax for XQuery, XML Query Requirements, XML Query and the XPath Full-Text Requirements working drafts)
        - Jerome Simeon (an editor of XQuery 1.0, XPath 2.0 and the XQuery Formal Semantics working drafts)
        - Jim Tivy (System architect of the ODMC 1.0 SQL Engine for Microsoft)
        - Philip Walder (an editor of the XQuery, XPath Formal Semantics and the XML Schema working drafts)

Even though that some of the chapter in this book will benefit an expert programmer, with a solid background in XML, there are more than enough chapter that will benefit the beginner and one's who are no really familiar with XPath, XQuery and XSLT. The book starts by going over the basics of the XQuery language. The Guided Tour is simply a refresher, and introduces the reader to XQuery and its syntax/semantics. It talks about the differences between XPath and XQuery for example, and the benefits of XQuery over XPath. Small code sections are used to convey to the read the difference of one technology versus the other. XPath and XQuery get a lot of attention in this book as there are lots of similarities between the two as far as syntax is concerned and plenty of difference as far as its capabilities with XPath.
The author[s] dedicate the second chapter to the principles behind the design decisions of the XQuery language. Don Chamberlin, the author of this chapter, write the following mission statement for XQuery:
"The purpose of the new query language was to provide a flexability to extract information from real and virtual XML documents."
It is very refreshing to see the committee for creating XML actually went to the process of defining requirements, design definitions and the rest of the formal specification realization before they actually "wrote" the language. The message of formalism is very clear throughout the book. At each stage of design for this new language, proper documents have been generated (Use Case doc, Requirements doc, etc) that portray a good process. The section on formal semantics adds the following:
"After the Java programming language was released, several formal semantics of the language were written. Some of these semantics revealed errors in the type system, which in turn could lead to security holes in browsers that run Java programs. ..."

XQuery looks very similar to XPath, and this book spends a couple of chapters (a little of chapter 2, and most of chapter 3) to talk about the similarities, differences and influences of one language over the other. The new releases of XSTL, XPath and XQuery 1.0 look very similar since these groups collaborated with each other throughout the process of development. If you don't know anything about XPath or XSLT, and want to know how they differ and hoe they have evolved in the recent years, chapter 3, by Michael Kay, is what you need to read - or may even start with before you read the other chapters in this book. Chapter 3 starts off very easy, but it goes into more advanced topics such as optimization techniques used with XQuery - specially the one's that have been used before with XSLT and XPath for the same purpose.
One of the most interesting chapters in this book is chapter 5 on Formal Semantics. It is rare and rather refreshing to see a language being broken up like that and it's predicate logic and semantics be given in such detail. You can skip this chapter all together, but I suggest otherwise. Even if it is to realize how language processing and semantics of a language work. I would love to see such topic for C++ or JAVA... This chapter is good for anyone interested in optimization techniques and wishes to learn more about the details and correctness of the XQuery language.
Applications of XQuery at they apply to Databases and how it can be integrated into databases are covered in part 4.
XQuery had the capability to navigate, select, combine, transform, sort and aggregate XML data - thus making the integration of XQuery with the backend database very powerful and rather simple. XML data, and how it can be integrated into the database with the help of XQuery is covered in detail and two techniques are laid out: the LOB (large object) representation where the entire XML data is saved as a large object in the database, and the composed representation where each XML element is stored individually.
Even though XQuery is fairly a new language, the authors in this book go to great length depicting the formalism, the correctness, the stability and flexibility of the XQuery language. The chapters that cover Database integration with XML data clearly convey the power of this language, and thought process that went behind designing such stable and powerful language.

I have been searching for a book that shows career specific examples of resumes, cover letters, that would also provide keyword phrases. This is the one!

Thank you Pat from NJ who reviewed the "Resumes Quick & Easy 6.0" software package and noted that this book was better than any software application.

5 out of 5 stars Say It Right When It Counts........2002-09-17

"How to Say It in Your Job Search" gets right to the best approach for letters and interviews. Every job search book has
similar information. Except this one. What I liked best are the
examples of real letters used in the job search. The choice of words is so critical. The author also covers the right words for
                  job interviews and resumes.

If you're looking for practical solutions to using the right words in a difficult job search, this book has it.

5 out of 5 stars A Guide I will Use For Years to Come.......2002-09-10

Ms. Kaplan's book is a comprehensive and informative guide that all job seekers, or those looking to improve their resume and interviewing skills, should use. As a newcomer to the working world, I found it difficult to relate to the advice others had provided. Without a lot experience of fine-tuning my resume, I had trouble with how I wanted to describe the skills I have to contribute to a company.

Ms. Kaplan has provided detailed examples of resumes and cover letters, including all levels of experience and job types, that are clear and concise and get the reader on the road to success. Ms. Kaplan's check lists outline the dos and don'ts of the job hunt and make it easy to chart your progress. I found her check lists and her suggestions for words and phrases to use in resumes extremely helpful.

Ms. Kaplan covers it all- from the resume, to writing cover letters (both job specific and unsolicited letters) to interviewing. She includes chapters on responding to job searches via the Internet- a skill we all need!

Not only have I relied on this book, but my family members have used it too!

5 out of 5 stars At last -- the resume book I've been waiting for!.......2002-08-26

Finally, a book I can recommend whole-heartedly to my clients!
If you're in the job market, or planning to be, consider this book as a small but necessary investment for success.

Many books are geared to lower-level, introductory jobs. Kaplan has examples from lawyers, doctors and more.

Kaplan manages to be upbeat and readable without raising unrealistic expectations. Functional resume? Great idea but most employers won't like it. Everyone should review the results-oriented examples in Chapter 1.

Kaplan offers tips for informational interviews, including sample letters to request meetings with strangers. If you're not familiar with the concept, start reading now!

And she's got tips I've never seen anywhere else:
How to answer an advertisement for employment
How to open a letter when you don't know the gender of the recipient ("Kelly" or "Leslie") -- and what to do if you
                  don't have the name.
How to salvage a shaky interview...
                  and a whole lot more.

This book will be of most help to experienced professionals and managers who are changing jobs but
not making major career shifts. You'll have to be more
creative if you're changing careers altogether -- and in
those cases, you really need to rely on your network.

If you know a mid-career job searcher, this book would make an
excellent recommendation or gift. Newbies out of school would do well to follow the examples, but they may need some help to translate experience to fit the models.

                  Go for it!

5 out of 5 stars Kudos to Kaplan.......2002-02-14

Robbie Kaplan's latest publication, How to Say It In Your Job Search is really three comprehensive guides rolled into one fabulous book. As always, her suggestions about resume preparation are the best in the business. Robbie is equally versed in what to say in cover letters and interviews. As a bonus, she has woven information about using electronics and the Internet into each section, which replaces the need for an e-job search book too. Her style is dynamic, up to date and reader friendly. How to Say It In Your Job Search is the only self-help book job seekers need to conduct a successful job search.

Don't fool yourself, this is not an easy book and I would not recommend it for a child under the age of about 6 or for a child who has no interest in learning about money as they would become bored easily. This is the kind of book that you "work through" and keep for future reference and always coming back to when teaching kids about money!

                      Book Description

In the aftermath of World War II and the Holocaust, West German industrialists faced a major crisis in their public image. With mounting revelations about the use of forced and slave labor, the "Aryanization" of Jewish property, and corporate profiteering under National Socialism, industrialists emerged from the war with their national and international reputations in tatters.

In this groundbreaking study, Jonathan Wiesen explores how West German business leaders remade and marketed their public image between 1945 and 1955. He challenges assumptions that West Germans--and industrialists in particular--were silent about the recent past during the years of denazification and reconstruction. Drawing on sources that include private correspondence, popular literature, and a wealth of unpublished materials from corporate archives, Wiesen reveals how German business leaders attempted to absolve themselves of responsibility for Nazi crimes while recasting themselves as socially and culturally engaged public figures. Through case studies of individual firms such as Siemens and Krupp, Wiesen depicts corporate publicity as a telling example of postwar selective memory.

In his introduction and conclusion, Wiesen considers the recent establishment of a multibillion dollar fund to provide financial compensation to the victims of industrial exploitation during World War II. This acknowledgment by German industry of its ongoing responsibility for its past crimes underscores the contemporary relevance of Wiesen's study.
