Book Description
Capitalism and slavery stand as the two economic phenomena that have most clearly defined the United States. Yet, despite African Americans' nearly $500 billion annual spending power, surprisingly little attention has been devoted to the ways U.S. businesses have courted black dollars in post-slavery America. Robert E. Weems, Jr., presents the first fully integrated history of black consumerism over the course of the last century.
The World War I era Great Migration of African Americans from the rural South to northern and southern cities stimulated initial corporate interest in blacks as consumers. A generation later, as black urbanization intensified during World War II and its aftermath, the notion of a distinct, profitable African American consumer market gained greater currency. Moreover, black socioeconomic gains resulting from the Civil Rights movement which itself featured such consumer justice protests as the Montgomery Bus Boycott, further enhanced the status and influence of African American shoppers.
Unwilling to settle for facile answers, Weems explores the role of black entrepreneurs who promoted the importance of the African American consumer market to U.S. corporations. Their actions, ironically, set the stage for the ongoing destruction of black-owned business. While the extent of educational, employment, and residential desegregation remains debatable, African American consumer dollars have, by any standard, been fully incorporated into the U.S. economy.
Desegregating the Dollar takes us through the "blaxploitation" film industry, the vast market for black personal care products, and the insidious exploitation of black urban misery by liquor and cigarette advertisers. Robert E. Weems, Jr., has given us the definitive account of the complicated relationship between African Americans, capitalism, and consumerism.
Customer Reviews:
an oppressed group confronts the capitalist market.......2003-08-11
Professor Weems details and analyzes the history of advertising to black consumers and black consumer behavior from the beginning until the end of the twentieth century. This book is a quick read, but you can tell the author put substantial amount of time researching each paragraph and page. In his introductory chapter, Weems sums up the book. This will be helpful to overburdened undergraduate students. However, those who complete the text will be satisfied by it.
The best chapter is the one on African-American consumer action. In that chapter, he discusses how black folk often fought racism economically. For example, he stated that black customers caused the store closing of the family of Emmitt Till's murderers. This chapter illustrates the fresh studies and perspectives still left for African-American scholars to bring forth in their (some woudl say) already crowded field.
This book would be an important tool for ethnic studies majors, business professionals, and historians. It's a wonderful text that should make the author worthy of tenure anywhere. I love the way that he refuses to think of the African-American community as a monolithic blob: differences in class, gender, and living environment are addressed here.
The book is not perfect. It never mentions Madame C.J. Walker, the first black millionaire. It never discusses how white business people often fail to advertise their products in black publications for fear that the product will be perceived as "a black thing." Further, topics are introduced, but their history is often not elaborated upon. For example, in the chapters on the 1970s, black film is brought up. However, black films go back to Oscar Michaux and others. It makes little sense that the topic was not brought up in the beginning, rather than the end, of the book.
Still, this book is worthy of a read from many, black and non-black, inside academia and outside of it.
Book Description
Allan H. Meltzer's monumental history of the Federal Reserve System tells the story of one of America's most influential but least understood public institutions. This first volume covers the period from the Federal Reserve's founding in 1913 through the Treasury-Federal Reserve Accord of 1951, which marked the beginning of a larger and greatly changed institution.
To understand why the Federal Reserve acted as it did at key points in its history, Meltzer draws on meeting minutes, correspondence, and other internal documents (many made public only during the 1970s) to trace the reasoning behind its policy decisions. He explains, for instance, why the Federal Reserve remained passive throughout most of the economic decline that led to the Great Depression, and how the Board's actions helped to produce the deep recession of 1937 and 1938. He also highlights the impact on the institution of individuals such as Benjamin Strong, governor of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in the 1920s, who played a key role in the adoption of a more active monetary policy by the Federal Reserve. Meltzer also examines the influence the Federal Reserve has had on international affairs, from attempts to build a new international financial system in the 1920s to the Bretton Woods Agreement of 1944 that established the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, and the failure of the London Economic Conference of 1933.
Written by one of the world's leading economists, this magisterial biography of the Federal Reserve and the people who helped shape it will interest economists, central bankers, historians, political scientists, policymakers, and anyone seeking a deep understanding of the institution that controls America's purse strings.
"It was 'an unprecedented orgy of extravagance, a mania for speculation, overextended business in nearly all lines and in every section of the country.' An Alan Greenspan rumination about the irrational exuberance of the late 1990s? Try the 1920 annual report of the board of governors of the Federal Reserve. . . . To understand why the Fed acted as it did—at these critical moments and many others—would require years of study, poring over letters, the minutes of meetings and internal Fed documents. Such a task would naturally deter most scholars of economic history but not, thank goodness, Allan Meltzer."—Wall Street Journal
"A seminal work that anyone interested in the inner workings of the U. S. central bank should read. A work that scholars will mine for years to come."—John M. Berry, Washington Post
"An exceptionally clear story about why, as the ideas that actually informed policy evolved, things sometimes went well and sometimes went badly. . . . One can only hope that we do not have to wait too long for the second installment."—David Laidler, Journal of Economic Literature
"A thorough narrative history of a high order. Meltzer's analysis is persuasive and acute. His work will stand for a generation as the benchmark history of the world's most powerful economic institution. It is an impressive, even awe-inspiring achievement."—Sir Howard Davies, Times Higher Education Supplement
Customer Reviews:
Not for the layman.......2003-12-12
This much heralded account of the Federal Reserve is justly lauded in academic circles because Meltzer brings forth many Fed documents which have long been buried away and unavailable to scholars. He is able to pursue step-by-step Fed actions and relate what happened in all those many meetings behind closed doors. Through the mass of information he has uncovered and his own in-depth knowledge of monetary policy and the Fed, he is able to bring new facts to light and correct previous interpretations that are more often than not those of Friedman and Schwartz's A Monetary History of the United States.
The weaknesses of Meltzer's book stem from his massive archive of information and the strength of his predecessors. The sheer volume of information he is trying to convey prompts the narrative to drift and the reader sometimes loses the point. And, as a good academic historian, he is engaged in a dialogue with other historians of the Fed and monetary policy that can push the layman to the sidelines. Meltzer's history assumes the reader has a rather advanced knowledge of economics and finance such as an understanding of the real bills doctrine and the operation of an international gold standard. Also, the charts and tables are often not very helpful in understanding the text or at least could have been presented in a better manner.
Overall, Meltzer does not produce any stunning revelations but a great many correctives to previous accounts and much added detail. The novice to the history of US monetary policy would do better to read Richard Timberlake's book (though taken with a grain of salt because of its conservative leanings) or the classic work by Milton Friedman and Anna Schwartz.

joe vitale is a true genius, in a simple yet inspiring way he teaches you how to become a greater and richer person in your journey of life.
i loved this book!
A Must.......2007-08-21
A great book, one that everybody should read.
And guess what? It really works!!
Book Very Misleading .......2007-01-25
This is an E-mail that I sent to all my friends after sending this book to Them. For all true believers in "Christ" and believers in God BE CAREFULL when reading this book. Not enough about God and his role in our finances. I do not recommend this book. The universe and myself have nothing to do with my finacial success!!!!!
If you started to read the e-book I SENT you, you will notice that is very misleading. It has a lot of good concepts in it, but it does not let you know that all money comes from the Lord. That giving will bring blessings from the Lord, not the UNIVERSE or youself. I apologize for sending this to you and not reading it more before I sent it. Not to mention that the author is an ordained minister, Hypnotherapist, Chi Kung Healer and holds a Degree in Metaphysical Science. It's amazing how the Devil can take away from the significance of giving for the Lord, and make it a tricky and confusing issue. This could trick a lot of new believers who are unaware of the Evil in relying on something other than the Lord himself for all your financial blessings. It gave me a bad feeling the more I read it. Not much talk about God. Again I apologize.
The NLP Guru Gives Vitale 5 Stars.......2006-08-15
Hello,
I again applaud Joe Vitale for sharing what should be common sense, what should be taught in school, and what should be a part of every red blooded American's business plan.
Vitale gives numerous examples of how using "the secret" will contribute to your wealth, by simply contributing to others.
I have purchased numerous copies of this book to give to both clients and friends who are on their ways to the stars and would suggest that you consider doing the same.
Thank you,
John Wingert
The NLP Guru
Lacks substance...I'll save you $13.95 and reveal the "secret".......2006-07-26
This book can be summed up in one sentence:
"Give away money in the form of 'tithing' and you will receive money back from the Universe from various 'unexpected' avenues, usually ten-fold."
And THAT'S IT!
Vitale goes on to say that you'll get back what you give. If you give time, you'll get time. If you give books, you'll get books. You get the picture.
He goes on to say that you should give from the bottom of your heart and not just to give to get something on the backend. He talks about how you don't need to tithe money to a church only but perhaps a charity that's very important to you or a school to benefit children. Give to whatever makes you feel good and never feel obligated otherwise it's wrong.
It's a powerful concept but if he wanted to drag it out he should have included examples, stories, illustrations, and perhaps some other types of attraction laws to "beef it up" a bit.

Book Description
The story of the Zambelli family, the world's largest manufacturer and exhibitor of fireworks, unfolds in this biography about an Italian family that came to America in search of a better life and, through hard work and determination, achieved extraordinary success in the pyrotechnic industry. The Zambellis have been in charge of some of the largest and most prestigious firework displays and have contributed to more than 100 years of Fourth of July celebrations. The moving stories behind the family and their business are intertwined with information about how and where fireworks are made, what goes on behind the scenes at a fireworks show, and what bigger and brighter fireworks will ignite the future.
Customer Reviews:
World's Best Fireworks..........2006-07-03
Without a doubt, the Zambelli Fireworks are spectacular.
When I was young, we were disappointed if windows in nearby houses didn't blow out during the annual Mount Carmel show in a town near their factory.
Most years, the windows blew out.
A must read.
Boom boom boom boom!.......2006-01-03
Wow! What a treat this book is! It's a biography on the Zambelli family, a history and the how-to of fireworks, a cookbook of wonderful recipes for every holiday of the year, and the most colorful presentation of various fireworks show. Here in Louisville (Lawvil to y'all), the Zambellis do "Thunder over Louisville" and it makes your heart stop and mouth drop open. What a thrill! And what a thrill this book is, too. Great writing by Gianni Hayes.
Unbelievably DYNAMITE Book!.......2005-12-25
I loved everything about this book: From the family history to the manufacturing of fireworks, to how to display them, their history...right up to the recipes. I bought this for my wife for Christmas because of the recipes (yeah, sure), but it is a fantastic biography. The author did truly good job! The Zambelli family is incredible.
KABOOM!.......2005-11-27
This is more than a biography of a famous familyl it's a history of pyrotechnics which also explains the manufacturing and exhibiting of fireworks. It even has holiday recipes that correlate with fireworks. Well written. Interesting family.
Unique Biography.......2005-11-25
When you find a good book you need to treasure it. This one on the Zambelli family has to be first choice. I like how the author combined an extraordinary family's life with the history, techniques and manufacturing of fireworks. Everything is exceptional about this book, and the writing is enjoyable.
