I love this book!.......2005-11-18

I have come a long way with this book. I found it at a flea market for $1 right after I finished college. I used some of the techniques to move from a dead-end job, to an entry-level job in an industry I wanted to actually be in. I later became a career counselor, and now I am writing a course and I am considering having this book as a required reading for our curriculum. Buying this book for one dollar was the smartest purchase I have ever made.

In the latest edition of the College Grad Job Hunter, Brian D. Krueger, a post-college career authority, provides a highly targeted book on job hunting skills for recent college graduates. While others seeking entry level jobs can benefit, the emphasis is on how to prepare while you are still in college or just graduating. As such, it is a solidly written and well-organized book that views job hunting as a process and provides step-by-step techniques for searching for that ideal job. It is a useful how-to manual even if it duplicates some of the advice in other books, such as What Color is Your Parachute? Krueger helpfully includes sample letters, phone messages and job hunting Web sites and books. We recommend this good, basic book for all novice job hunters (not just freshly-minted college grads).

Well, so I just bought this book, and, yeah, it's pretty useful. However, I looked on their web site, www.collegegrad.com, and, apparently, "Want the straight story on how to find a job? The job search advice at this site is direct from the #1 best-selling book for entry level job search, "College Grad Job Hunter" by Brian Krueger. The entire contents of this book are online here at our site, available to you for free!" So do what the nice man says, and don't throw your money away on actually buying the book, like I did.

Less Than Honest (4th edition).......2003-01-25

This book has tips on how to get your name noticed but they seem not very moral. Chapter 15 suggests putting a dollar to catch the attention of hiring managers and other tactics that seem less than honest and seem more theatrical than anything. Furthermore, chapter 13 has less than honest techniques such as saying you are updating a mailing list to get contact information. You might think these are valid and not lying at all but I consider them exactly so.

I do not think such tactics are an honorable way of getting a job.

Many unconventional tips.......2002-08-22

This book has more offbeat advice than any job hunting book I've read. Indeed, newlygrads need the help and the gimmicks to get on top of the pile in today's job market. For example, one "guerrilla insider technique" suggested enclosing a crisp dollar bill to your resume submission, with a handwritten Post-It note with:

"I know that time is money and I value your time. Would you please invest two minutes in reviewing my resume today, and in taking my phone call later this week? I appreciate your time."

Gimmicky book. Add it to your collection.

After a rousing introduction, Peterson bestows on the lucky reader the writings of P.J. O'Rourke, Jean Shepard, and James Thurber on the manly pastimes of hunting and fishing. Russell Chatham joins in with the title story and women keep pace with Nancy Anisfield on a grouse hunt. The contents are woven in an artful fashion so the book can be enjoyed at random or read from cover to cover. Two camo-covered thumbs up for this fine addition to the humor bookshelf, a bargain many times over for the hunter or fisherperson who knows how ridiculous they look in those Filson togs.

there wasn't a lot of detail explaining the premise behind this audio tape and i knew Dave Ramsey does a great job simplifying and explaining being debt smart so i bought this audio cassette as a graduation gift for a high school senior that i figured would listen more so than read. i didnt realize it has a spiritual twist to it and it was about the joys of GIVING (donations, tithe, etc) until i received the tape. it's not that it's bad, just not what i thought i would be giving.

Enlightening For Any Parent or Educator.......2003-01-25

This is one of the best books I have read into the understanding of a child's true nature, and how to foster an environment conducive to a child and parent's success. It was a clear insight into why the massive drugging of children has taken place in America, and exposes all the frauds of mental health professionals which are not really helping children or parents overcome serious problems. I have found myself reading particular segments twice to grasp the serious nature of the book. This is a book that any parent or educator in public or private school would greatly derive productive results in reading. As a home-schooling parent of many years now the book clearly placed me at even a higher level of understanding children, and what they need from all the adults around them starting from birth to adulthood. It is an eye-opener book, and when you think you know it all you will find this book can teach you even more knowledge. Distorted images of women are expressed not only in everyday stereotyping, discrimination, and harassment, but also in pornography, domestic abuse, and other forms of sexual violence. Anne Borrowdale examines how Christian teaching has reinforced these problems. She studies how women are often falsely idealized as well as belittled, and how men, too, are harmed by their "distorted images" as either superhuman gods or uncontrollable monsters.

In Distorted Images, the author argues that only when the sexes cease to deal in these distortions can the evils of sexual exploitation, assault, and even murder resulting from sex-based hatred - all things that threaten women daily simply because they are women - be overcome.

This is an enlightening and well written book on corporate-level strategy. The authors clearly and methodically discuss whether corporate parent creates or destroy value for the organisation.

This is a useful reference book for management consultants or for managers involved in formulating strategies for Multibusiness companies. Students studying for an MBA or business strategies should find the book useful, helpful and handy.

Corporate Centres.......2002-09-30

I have used this book many times in designing the corporate headquarters compnent of organizations. It is one of a very few references available on this particular issue to consultants in organization design. As a Value Based Design consultant, analyst, researcher and advisor on value creating systems I must take issue with the previous reviewer and strongly recommend this book to actual practitioners.Goold happily steers us away from mathematical reductionism and provides some great examples of how economic value can be leveraged as diverse means of generating it are discovered in the corporate portfolio. Like Jaques caution not to throw the hierachical baby out with the bathwater,Goold provides an antidote to the view that corporate centres add no value. As companies become more process based and self organizing, insights such as those provided by the author into managing such complexity will be invaluable.

I ordered this book because I excpected to find an advanced mathematical textbook on strategic analysis, shareholder value and real options. Therefore I was disappointed to find out, that it does not contain a single formula and ignores all the progress made by shareholder valuation techniques and real option theory.

It is based on verbal organizational theory and sociology, not on microeconomic theory and transaction cost theory.
It is based on an INTERNAL point of view, not an EXTERNAL point of view, and fails to analyze quantitative competetive advantages. Its framework is very academic and descriptive, no step-by-step-imlementation plans, no mathematics. Just interviews with british conglomerates and quotations from academic papers.

However, the book taught a valuable lesson, it did not intend to teach at all: The popular EVA/Economic-Profit-Models for Share-holder-Valuation-Management were first applied by british cong-lomerates like BTR back in the late 1960's. The misapplication of EVA/economic-profit-models in british companies and their resulting loss of competetive advantage is a cautionary tale against the abuse of simplified shareholder-Valuation-techniques.

With all due respect towards the authors, I see few hands-on-applications for their work. Sure, I do not question Goolds integrity or experience. He must have invested months of work in his book. His book was stimulating to read, but how can it help a consultant, who sits face-to-face in front of an angry customer, who wants to see quantifiable results for his money ?.
I share Mr Goolds scepticism aginst an aggressive 'financial control style', but to falsify EVA/Economic-Profit-Models
it takes more than anecdotal evidence, it takes stochastic data.

This is an excelent book based on practical knowledege and very clever tools to evaluate different strategies in a multibusiness company.
