        Description:
A longitudinal study of mentoring dyads was used to investigate the antecedents and consequences of liking in formal mentoring relationships. Demographic and deep-level similarity were examined as antecedents to liking in mentoring relationships. Following this, the association between the degree of liking and reports of mentoring functions provided was examined. Mentors and proteges differed in the similarity characteristics that impacted their perceptions of the mentoring relationship. Results also indicated that mentors' level of liking for proteges was not related to proteges' perceptions of mentoring functions received. Longitudinal data allowed examination of whether early perceptions of similarity predict final evaluations of mentoring functions. Analyses indicate that relationships change over time, further emphasizing the need to examine developmental relationships longitudinally.

                  Book Description

This volume, fourth in a series of periodic histories of the institution, is as much a history of the world economy during 1979-89 as one of the IMF itself. Boughton discusses the IMF's surveillance of the international monetary system in the 1980s; the Fund's role in the international debt crisis of the 1980s, and IMF lending in support of structural adjustment in low-income countries during that period. The volume concludes with a general history of the institution, including the quota system, the SDR, membership, and other institutional matters.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite enough for the CIW v5 Site Designer.......2006-06-30

I recently passed the CIW Site Designer exam by studying almost entirely from this book. I scored an 80 on the exam. Even though I passed, I don't recommend using this book alone when preparing for the exam. There are questions on Flash and security, topics which are not covered in this book. I recommend supplementing this book with other material for anyone planning to sit for Version 5.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, Great Buy!.......2004-08-13

I used this book to study both exams and I passed!

5 out of 5 stars Great choice for exam prep.......2004-07-14

I bought this book used based on recomendations of others and was not let down. I would suggest additional Internet research on OBI statndards and OPI standards. Regardless, this book presents information necessary to pass the test with a high score in a concise and well organized fasion. I got a 92 on the first part and a 92 on the second part. I may just keep this book.

4 out of 5 stars Study Exam Guide.......2003-01-28

Passed CIW exam 1D0-420 & 1D0-425 scoring 90% for each.
I found the book very easy to read & a concise Study Guide (at times maybe TOO concise). The Site Design-Part 1, covered all the exam objectives with good explanations. However I felt that the E-Commerce - Part II, fell short of covering 2 aspects of the exam objectives, namely Catelog Design & relating OPI-OBI standards.

All in all, I would recommend this book to anyone striving to pass the above CIW exams.

5 out of 5 stars Must have book for high grades in a short time!.......2002-09-21

A very concise must have book that condenses the material down into what you really need to know to obtain high CIW grades. It helped me pass the Site Designer exam with a 93 and E-Commerce with an 83. The Assessment Test at the beginning of the book gave me a very accurate look at what I needed to concentrate on but I read every page too. Especially helpful were the chapter summaries, exam essentials, and key terms at the end of every chapter which exactly pinpointed what I needed to learn. Also, the questions with answers at the end of every chapter were very exam like and perfect for practice exams when not near a computer. I took the book everywhere. But I also spent many hours with their Sybex EdgeTest Engine on the included CD simulating the exam until my scores were passing. I tried out the included flashcard feature, too, but much preferred the multiple choice format. Since this is their first edition, it does have some typos and a few questions with errors but they were very easy to spot and fix. Many thanks to the author, publisher, and to Amazon.

Martin Yate's Knock `Em Dead series has spawned numerous bestsellers. Here's the original, in an all-new, updated edition. The core of the book is a catalogue of strategies for answering the wide array of questions you could be asked during a job interview. The book also includes plenty of other job-hunting advice. If you don't get the job after following this book's advice, it can't be because you flunked the interview. We from getAbstract recommend this book to all job-hunters and to those who think they may be out looking anytime soon.

5 out of 5 stars The advice really works.......2002-08-04

I bought my copy in 1995 at a low point in my job hunt -- 10 months looking (I was already employed), a few interviews but no offers yet. I happened to have an interview lined up for the following week and did not want to blow it -- again! I used the information on how to answer common interview questions and was offered the job. I actually wrote the author a thank you letter afterwards. Two years later I was promoted and had to start hiring people. I turned to his book "Hiring the Best" for help and would also recommend that to anyone job hunting to get inside the interviewer's head. Now, I am getting ready to job-hunt again and plan to use "Knock 'Em Dead" once more.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it and get the job you want.......2002-08-02

I had a different attitude in interviews and meeting with CEO `s during my life. But this book changed my style, made me look different , answered a lot of worrying questions and opened my eyes on so many hidden tactics in winning a job.

I read the book during applying to a job and when I was placed second best I used the last chapters techniques & advise and was ranked first. So I got the job I always dreamt of!!!

                        Thanks to Martin Yate.

I tried to contact him on line to his address in the book but could not reach him.If you ever reach him send him my regards.

I beleive this book is important to every one who is looking to get a job and to every one who is hiring people.

5 out of 5 stars Don't get a job, Get THE job YOU want.......2002-05-16

I've taught at colleges where graduating students were offered placement services as well as having to interview people myself for a job. The contents of this book are of more value than the entire program at the college. Filled with brilliant ideas for how to organize and prepare your resume as well as how to get an interview and how to answer the interviewer's questions it is a valuable resource for the job seeker.

I especially like the way that the book details how to handle situations where the interviewer asks right up front how much you are expecting to make, or when your years of experience don't match the number they are looking for, or when your education is not at the level they are looking for and similar situations. Things that are an interview killer are covered in detail as well as how to get past them unscathed.

Better than any placement program I've seen, some of the most detailed advice that you will find anywhere, and up to date with modern technology and techniques, this is your best source for competent advice on how to actually get the job you want. Don't send another resume, make another phone call or go to another interview without reading it first.

5 out of 5 stars You MUST buy this Book!.......2002-02-20

I bought this book back when I was graduating from College in 1994 and followed all of its suggestions. It gives you a great framework to follow for success and shows you all the basics. Since that first job, I have been working in the staffing industry, helping people find jobs all day long, and now reccommend this book to everyone I find who is looking for a job. It is worth every penny. Buy this book and squash the competition in your interview. Hint: Most hiring managers have read this book or a similar book (especially the interview questions part), so should you.

What's to say? This is a required text for many personal financial planning or investing curricula, and it delivers what it promises. It is very thorough. Also extremely up to date on ever-changing topics such as online investing or folio baskets. My only bone with this book is that it assumes the reader is 19 years old and does some talking down. Otherwise a useful introduction to a broad topic.

                          1 out of 5 stars Too superficial.......2004-01-14

I picked this book up a couple of years ago and when I read it then, I thought it was too unreal, too fictitious. Everything the author wrote about Oracle was that Oracle is the paradise and there is not a thing wrong about Oracle.

I read it again a month back and thinking it would changed my mind. It didn't. In fact, it made it even worse. I have been with several high profile Silicon Valley tech companies and despite the rosy outlook of these companies (especially during the dot-com days), it was not all heaven. The author failed miserably to inject realism into Oracle machinery. I would definitely give this book a thumbs down.

                          3 out of 5 stars Insight & Frosting.......2003-02-01

Much of this work seems like a light and fluffy tribute to Oracle, without looking very hard at what might be ethical issues with the business practices described. If, however, you are negotiating a contract with Oracle, some of the basic hardball tactics described in the book will prepare you for the session and help to educate any starry eyed rookie team members regarding what they are up against when playing in the big leagues.

                          1 out of 5 stars dead trees.......2002-09-10

Published in 2000, this book was in many respects already out of date. By now, more is. Much of what remains current is represented here by truisms and by gee-whiz exclamations, as for instance Read's goggling at Oracle's fitness center and cafeterias. He appears to subscribe to, and he promotes, a very unreflective adherence to Oracle business practices.

However, one must salute Read's marketing abilities, without which his book was unlikely to interest even so obscure a publisher as Adams Media Corporation. On the other hand, the book is astonishingly ill-written--Read is reported to have a degree from Harvard, but I'm waiting to see it--and his publisher evidently never even thought of editing his annoying prose.

Stay away from this book. By contrast, _The Difference Between God and Larry Ellison_ is a gem.

3 out of 5 stars This is not a "business advice" book.......2001-12-09

This is an interesting, but distorted view of Oracle. Any company that has to deal with Oracle can tell you that Oracle has many more challenges than this book points out. It is not a "how to run a business" book as much as "hey, we successed in spite of our errors". Although they were successful due a lot of hard work, they made many more mistakes than were indicated in this book. The book is worth reading if your company is using Oracle products. In understanding the hands-on control from Larry Ellison, the dominance that Larry plays in the running of the corporation and how his tempermental style effects their business decisions, Oracle's selling style, and the culture of the company, it will help you make better decisions in how to deal with the company.

                          4 out of 5 stars Management Policies.......2001-08-25

The book follows a historic description and the developing management policies of the business up to about 97. He doesnt show the thinking, choices and options that lay behind the management's decisions clearly. He relates the policies, their successes/ failures and how they seemed to work with the insight of a guy who was their recipient, not their creator. He wasn't passive but I didn't feel that he really gave executive insight into strategy, leadership, planning, competetive battles and especially in the ways they were thought out and won. We don't experience Ellison first hand. It is an insiders book from a lower middle level. I like the book in that although it struggles with its organisation, the contents are still mainly composed of insights into the policies and it takes a business focus rather than the journalists' history valuing approach. I would buy it again for the ideas, but I haven't read any other Oracle books. It is very easy to pick up and just read.
