Product Description
Public relations professionals know that power and influence are crucial to getting things done inside their organizations, yet many practitioners believe they are relatively powerless in these strategic moments. Gaining Influence in Public Relations explores how professionals can increase their influence in practice to help their organizations achieve success. This provocative book explores the largely uncharted territories of power, resistance, dissent, and activism in public relations, arguing that practitioners can increase their power and social legitimacy by developing and using a wider range of influence resources, strategies, and tactics. Authors Bruce K. Berger and Bryan H. Reber talked with hundreds of practitioners, analyzed original survey data, and examined a detailed case study to develop a theory of power relations. Ultimately, the book seeks to advance the ethical and effective practice of public relations. Intended for scholars and graduate students in public relations, it also has much to offer practitioners, as well as scholars and students in organizational communication, organizational theory, human resources, and leadership.

Book Description
Called the business crime wave of the 21st century, trademark counterfeiting and product piracy are worldwide in scope and cost the U.S. economy billions of dollars every year. High technology and the globalization of business have made it possible to counterfeit and pirate a seemingly limitless number of products, from t-shirts, designer jeans, films and books to auto and airplane parts, and prescription drugs. The 1995-1996 trade dispute between the U.S. and China shows how serious the problem has become for American business and for U.S. diplomatic relations. Paradise explores the history of counterfeiting and piracy, shows how they are done, and the strategies that U.S. businesses are using to combat them. With interviews, commentary, and anecdotes by corporate attorneys, business leaders, and private investigators, this well-written book is essential for anyone interested in the damage that violations of intellectual property law are inflicting on world trade and what is being done to stop it. Paradise lays out the problem in Chapter 1 with a clear explanation of the differences between trademarks, copyrights, and patents, and the laws covering each. In Chapter 2 he looks at the role played by organized crime, gray market goods, the lack of intellectual property laws, and ultimately the threat to U.S. business. He discusses the recent investigations and disputes with China, and its aftermath throughout Southeast Asia. Chapter 4 focuses on the knockoff, chapter 5 on street peddlers and flea markets (and how merchants are retaliating), and chapter 6 on the tracking of counterfeiters. The entertainment industries and the pharmaceutical industries are then closely examined. He follows with equally comprehensive (and chilling) studies of automobile and aircraft parts counterfeiting and piracy in cyberspace. Paradise ends with a look at what is being done to counteract the inroads that piracy and counterfeiting have made into the global economy, and offers a provocative call for more and better efforts in the future.

a page-turner!.......2001-11-04
A one-of-a-kind book! I've never seen any other book on the shelves that discusses this topic. Certainly not as thoroughly as Mr. Paradise covers it. It's obvious he's done his homework. The research and time spent talking to the experts is also apparent.
I'm a librarian and I read a couple of hundred books a year so I don't waste any time on books I don't find interesting. I couldn't put this book down! Despite the catchy title this is a fun book to read. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in keeping abreast of current events of anyone who just wants to read a darned good book.
a stunner.......2000-12-31
the definitive guide to commercial counterfitting available on the market.
Paul really delivers the goods in this page turning expose'.

Customer Reviews:
As general as it gets.......2003-10-12
This product should not have the words 'Training Course' in it. It is misleading to the buyer. All that you get from this material is a general overview of what .net is about. It's basically just an advertisement for .net and the Eiffel language. Stay away and spend you hard earned money a good book instead.
Not as good as I expected.......2002-11-08
I already had a bit of knowledge about the new .NET framework, having attended a one day MS seminar and done some reading on my own. Based on the course description and the reviews, I got Dr. Meyer's course hoping for a deeper look at how it all worked.
That information was probably there, though not in the depth that I expected. And with all due respect to Dr. Meyer, I found that his voice put me to sleep -- a remarkable monotone that fit perfectly with a very intelligent college-professor type, but was not at all conducive to presenting this material. I had to work extremely hard just to keep listening. It also seemed to move much too slowly for me -- with lots of repitition, including repeated plugs for the Eiffel language, one of Dr. Meyer's own creations. I found that quite distracting.
On the other hand, the material is accurate and presented in a very organized, methodical way. Just didn't fit my learning style, I guess.
Great.......2002-04-01
The book is of litle help, but the video is superb. Dr. Meyer is really a great comunicator and knows what he is talking about. The course isn't intended for those looking for technical details, but as an overall picture it is clear, complete and very enjoyable to follow.
Great lectures on how and why .NET fits together.......2002-01-07
I highly recommend viewing this set of lectures if you're interested in learning about .NET. Dr. Meyer has a sweeping knowledge of computer science, both theoretical and applied. He brings all this experience to bear as he clearly explains the pieces of .NET, the theory behind the pieces, some of the business and political judgements that went into .NET, and some of the issues you'll encounter as you actually begin developing for the .NET framework. On the other hand, the series flies by some of these pieces, particularly ASP+ and ADO+, giving little insight into how to begin developing with these pieces. Although the videos appear within a web page, there is little integration between the videos and the few associated examples, and no integration for getting you started programming. The series would be nearly as valuable if it just appeared as a video, on tape or DVD. It's the value of the lectures that makes the series worth buying and viewing.
Useful, but still an overview.......2001-10-05
It's a well done course, but if you're expecting a detailed presentation of SOAP, ASP.NET, XML, think twice before you buy it.
However, the material is useful from the software engineering perspective and it's the right starting point for jumping into the .NET technology. Simple, no buzz words, explaining the rationale behind CLR (how COM/DCOM evolved into CLR, why .NET is not something magic or even worse, vaporware), it's worth buying it.
And a final hint: be patient, the real meat is in the second half of the course (.NET architecture, the runtime, the object model, the frameworks description - ADO+, ASP+ etc).
Book Description
Finally, owners of small businesses have a practical book that can prepare them for the most common and destructive crises they face. Even problems that would be "small" to a larger company can be disastrous for a small one. Entrepreneurs know this, but many balk at the prospect of crisis planning because it seems endless and overwhelming.
Debra Traverso shows business owners how to best use their limited time and resources to address the most important potential threats to their businesses. By laying basic groundwork for crisis planning and zeroing in on the most likely, most damaging problems, owners can stay a step ahead of the disruptions that plague their peers.
This book covers preventive measures for bullet-proofing a business and explains what to do if a crisis has already struck. It offers a wealth of information in an easy-to-browse format, including proven checklists, examples, case studies, and resources. A "Vulnerability Identification Form" helps the business owner conduct the kind of risk analysis that a large company would typically perform.
Best of all, these strategies are ready to implement immediately, because they don't revolve around 500-page contingency plans and big emergency response teams.
Customer Reviews:
A small business owner's helper.......2006-05-09
At first glance I thought this book was written for managers who regularly put out fires. But when I started studying the book I quickly learned that the book identifies a myriad of typical "fires" that can sprout up at work and describes how a good manager/leader can PLAN so the likelihood of such fires ever starting is minimal. I highly recommend this book for any entrepreneur in business to use when strategically managing his or her business rather than managing with a fire extinguisher.
The book is split into 3 sections:
1. Principles of planning for a small business
2. Getting your house in order
3. When the crisis moves from in-house to the public
My favorite chapter was #3 (Avoid the Most Common Management Missteps), but chapters 2, 4 & 5 were very good ones as well concerning self-audit, employees, and computers. If you are a small business owner, then do yourself a favor and read this book. I suspect it will inform you of a few things you should do at your work that will improve your way of doing things.
Well-written, precise, and practical.......2001-10-27
I just finished reading "The Small Business Owner's Guide to a Good Night's
Sleep," and have already recommended it to a couple small business owners I know. I
congratulate the author! It's well-written, precise, and practical.

Great advice for small business owners/managers.......2001-10-27
I got more advice from this book's chapter on dealing with employees than I
have in the last three books I've read on employee relations, put together. I
especially appreciated the information on how to involve families of
employees to, in turn, motivate the employees even more.. . . and all while
keeping the families out of the way. I'm not sure I agree with Traverso that
a small business can survive and even thrive through a recession, but her
tips seem to make great sense, so I'm going to try them.

Worth the money........2001-09-22
This is one of the best books I've read in months on how to manage your
business prudently and efficiently. I bought it so that I would have it on my
shelf for when those frightening unexpected and negative times arise. . .and
we know they do in every business. . . so I was surprised to find myself
reading the book for about two hours without putting it down. I also took the
time to do the small business self-audit, and the author was right: I DO have
problems brewing in my organization that I wasn't even aware existed before I
read the book. Worth the money.

A bunch of press releases.......2007-07-24
While a great tool for the law student obsessed with prestige (and aren't we all?), take the writeups with a grain of salt. It does provide great insights into the recent high profile cases handled by the firms, as well as some episodes that the firms would probably rather forget.
Overall though, it reads like typical locker room bragging - just about every firm claims that they let noone but Supreme Court clerks and EICs of the Harvard or Yale Law Reviews through the doors.

Customer Reviews:
Corporate law guide?.......2005-09-14
I ordered the book seeing that it was a guide to law firms(top 100).
What it is geared towards is corporate law, NOT a guide for simple peons like me that need good attorneys from time to time.
The title of the book does miss-lead.
A good book for corporate I must say.
Not useless, but not much more than useless.......2005-06-23
After having clerked for a judge for a year after law school, I began researching future job options. But from an outsider's view, all the big firms seem the same. They all pay about the same, and they all demand extreme hours. I was vaguely aware that certain firms had more "prestige," but had little idea why that should matter to me.
Naturally I turned to Vault. But it didn't help. Even after reading about a dozen descriptions, they all still sounded exactly the same. Every entry states that the firm is highly selective in who it hires, and has such and such clients, litigated such and such recent case. Then there's a quote by one associate who says the firm is great and one that says it sucks.
Things I would like to have seen but did not:
1) partner to associate ratio
2) attrition rates
3) percentage of first years that make partner
4) how frequently they hire laterals or judicial clerks
5) what associates of this firm do when they don't make partner -- i.e., realistic information concerning what will actually happen to me if I get a job here
I suppose that given the importance of choosing a law firm, any small amount of information helps, so you should buy this book. But don't expect any real insights.
This Book is a TTT.......2004-06-24
Vault is just one of many entities that profits from the insecurities of law and pre-law students.
Some info one might want from a guide to law firms:
1) Average hours worked.
2) Average length of time to partnership, and other related info.
3) How far into the class a firm will recruit at your law school.
4) What makes firm A different from firm B.
5) Et cetera.
None of this info, unfortunately, is contained in this book. Every description is essentially the same, and equally useless: Firm X worked on the following big cases... Associate 1 says the work is great. But, adds associate 2, the hours can sometimes get to you and the partners aren't always friendly. Blah, blah, blah.
Save your money. This book is a waste of paper.
Order it from Vault.com.......2002-08-20
This is a great book, but if you need it right away and don't want to pay a special handling fee order it directly from Vault.com. The eBook version is also available there as well as the new 2003 edition that is not available yet in bookstores.
a superb book and the only one of its kind.......2001-09-11
i don't normally write reviews as i'm too busy slaving away as a lawyer...but i must add my $.02 this vault guidebook is astonishingly good. my fellow lawyers and i can't get enough of "The Buzz" which tells what lawyers are saying about various firms. this is the ONLY resource that tells it like it is in the arduous, sometimes rewarding, sometimes nauseating world of BIGLAW

Grain of salt.......2000-04-16
As a 1L at NYU, I've been using this book as a general reference while learning about the firms through other channels as well. Some entries seemed a little gossipy, leading me to wonder if the editors were tending to include predominantly the most inflammatory or "juicy" quotes. As a basic reference it was very useful, especially when I was first starting to research firms, but I wouldn't rely on it too heavily.
simply informative.......1999-07-27
Packed with insider accounts from the lawyers themselves. Can it get any better than that?
Great Book!.......1999-07-20
I thought that 750 pages were going to be too many. I was wrong. There is plenty of statistics, charts, and details that make every part of this book really very useful!!!
Unbelievable.......1999-03-27
This is by far the best resource I have ever seen for aspiring lawyers and current associates alike. Wonderfully written and very in-depth. Their website, Vaultreports.com, was amazing as well.
Hard core greatness!.......1998-10-04
What a read! This book truly gives you the inside scoop on law firms. It's a rude awakening for my boss -- who happens to be the hiring partner at my firm.

Gives good, basic understanding of unclaimed property.......1998-04-28
I am a paralegal and this book gives a good, basic understanding of various state laws as well as requirements for finders. You can glean ideas from this book to start your own business, if you so desire.
A good introduction and survey of unclaimed money issues.......1997-09-16
The text takes you into the subject of unclaimed money in a very simple way. It shows you the origins of unclaimed money and some of the mechanics of how it is handled. You are given a general guide of how to go about tracking through this evident mess of uncorrelated data. He also tells you that some of the government agencies appear to rely on few citizens actually finding money, and most of the unclaimed money has actually been spent by states. There is also a overview of the business of returning money to owners, and earning a profit while doing it.
The level is all introductory. Advanced techniques and logic are mentioned, but not extensively gone into. It is an easy, comfortable and easy to read and remember format.

Book Description
This book combines dramatic narrative, arresting analysis and original research. It assesses BP's comparative performance, and focuses on how BP responded to the rise of new competitors, the decline of Britain's imperial power, and the determination of nation states to assert national sovereignty over oil. Climaxing with the OPEC crisis that shook the world in the 1970s, the book will be of wide interest and relevance, especially for those interested in big business, globalization and nationalism, international affairs, OPEC, the Middle East, and oil.
