    Book Description

This book, based on the prestigious Oxford Amnesty Lecture series, investigates the relationship between globalization and human rights. The contributors come to the subject from a wide range of disciplines and perspectives, and include Noam Chomsky, Kwame Anthony Appiah, Homi Bhaba, Susan George, and Joseph Stiglitz, with introductions and commentaries by Richard Rorty, Alan Ryan, Charles Taylor and others. Their forthright and provocative essays challenge the view that the development of global markets and global investment, together with the widespread circulation of information on which this depends, make human rights abuses less likely.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer In Economics - Very Informative.......2005-08-19

Excellent primer in economics, that is for the layman like myself. In lucid, clear terms, Maybury describes the meanings of the demand for money, velocity and inflation and how it affects us from all over the world.

In this, low velocity exists in the low volume of currency being transferred due to persons holding on to their money, while high velocity exists in higher volumes of money transfer. And while the government inflates the money supply to pay for their expenses, inflation occurs which can lead to the second stage of devalue and inflation and third stage of runaway inflation. And so the government then raises interest rates and stops printing in attempt to slow down the inflation, which usually brings on a recession. It is here where many businesses are adversely affected from expansion from the inflation, only to be severely affected during the recession.

In this, Maybury brings out the history lesson from the French, prior the revolution, from over inflating the money supply and the subsequent results of runaway inflation; the end result was a new government with a dictator, Napoleon. And the history of President Carter's freeze on Iranian assets in response to the hostages held for the U.S. protection of the overthrown Shah. And so such a freeze caused panic in the other Arab countries, who could not liquidate their assets so quickly as they were bound in real estate and other non-liquid holdings. And then Carter's embargo on Russia from her invasion in Afghanistan also created a panic in the economy, the dollar way down, gold way up. Lessons to learn.

Helpful advise is given on how to invest - short term, on what to watch for, the curve in interest. A great theory is given on what has been happening over the recent years. The ideas are that the U.S. has been issuing bonds with greater interest which people buy and subsequently hold on to. This way the government can print to their hearts desire and not increase the velocity and inflation and the deficit can go up to unlimited degrees. But this however will bottom out one day when people become aware. And when that does, look out, there will be runaway third stage inflation - a disaster. So there are things to do and watch for and Maybury is truly beneficial and helpful, significant advice, knowledge and insight to be more alert in what to watch for.

What also is highly recommended are Maybury's other books in economics, "What ever Happened to Penny Candy?" and "The Clipper Ship Strategy."

5 out of 5 stars Number Three in a Nine Book Series and Just as Good!.......2002-12-30

It is amazing to say this but I feel like I am actually taking another course of study that should be part of my college curriculum. Mr. Maybury's books have allowed me to examine an area of study that I have been intimidated by for years. Economics never held any fasination for me in the past but when I am done with his series of books I may actually look into seeking further education in that subject. His books have given me the confidence to tackle that foe.

One cannot wait to finish whichever book they are currently reading to move on to the next in the series in order to avoid loosing any of the recall from the previous ones. This is book three and I am already eying number 4, "Whatever Happened to Justice," on my bookshelf.

Mr. Maybury has opened up the world of history, economics, money management, political backroom tactics, moral issues and government, bringing them all together in an easily understandable way to help us increase our understanding and improve ourselves.

      Great Book.

4 out of 5 stars Maybury shows economics isn't that hard.......2000-03-27

The confusing -- and irrelevant -- jumble of algebra and calculus that is the hallmark of college economics is tossed out the window in Maybury's little gem of a book (although you will find half-a-dozen very simple graphs). Although this book does require a little thought and study, Maybury presents, clearly and concisely, how economics affects _everyone_ in society. Specifically he deals with inflation and how it devastates everyone. The cause is simple (the government creates too much money); the effects are profound (government inflation has brought down society after society thoughout history). Maybury clearly understands that economics, political science and law are not separate disciplines (and this was known in the past, when they were taught as 'political economy'). He subscribes to the principles on which the U.S. was founded; the old British Common Law (or Natural Law) and that which springs from it: the free market (today defended most of all by the Austrian School). This book is less than 100 pages long and yet packed with more information than you'll find in most college-level econ texts. If you want to immunize yourself (and your children) from what passes for economics today, Maybury is one of the best places to start.

4 out of 5 stars A good economy investigation book.......2000-03-26

4 out of 5 stars I keep coming back to find ideas, lists, and inspriation.......2001-04-01

I read this book a while back, and I'm amazed at the number of times I return to it to find a list, get an idea, reinspire myself. The book offers a compilation of the author's insights on building a practice, and there are tons of good hints. One of my favorite sections is "structuring the sales presentation," which suggested timing, what questions to prepare to answer, and solid sales ideas. Lukaszewski's philosphy is clear - straightforward, no-nonsense marketing and selling, and that's how the book is written too. It quickly became a "go to" reference for my practice.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing amount of wisdom in a small package.......2004-09-12

This book contains some surprisingly profound ideas on how to hire and retain the best people for your organization. There are some great bits of wisdom on recruiting, selection and interviewing from a broad spectrum of contributors. Also are some great ideas on motivation, communications, rewards and recognition, and even how to ensure employees depart in a way beneficial to themselves and the organization.

The book is essentially the capturing of organizational best practices. Each of the 101 ideas contains a page or two of information. Sometimes this is a quote from an executive or expert in the field, and often is a fairly detailed tactical approach to execution of a key principle.

Highly recommended for being far more than it appears it would be. I would think that regardless of your level of expertise in human resources practices or managing people, you will find something new here. I was impressed with the choices the author made for contributions and presentation of unique ideas and approaches. Well done!

4 out of 5 stars Review of the 2nd edition.......2000-06-21

I am a reader of the 2nd edition of this book, as I have not got the 3rd edition that , sorry, just give you some comment to the 2nd edition. I believe, however, you can glean how good the 2nd edition is. Firstly, it give some hits of writing a cover, or , what essential information should be given i your cover letter. For instance, you should tell the potential employer whet you are available to attend the intervew. Secondly, What visas/permits would you be necessary to got. Thirdly, after arrival, the first stuff you have to do is how to fight with " Customs Not only those information, it also drops the hints down, say, the issue of accommodation, public transport, insure , etc.. Indeed, I highly recommend this book to whom want to work in the UK.

2 out of 5 stars Many good "how to's", BUT.......2003-05-05

David Hampshire gave much helpful guidance regarding the rules, regulations and bureaucracy in France (although "Frommer's" and "Lonely Planet" books do as well). However, his clear dislike for most things French (especially the people) made the book read more like a prejudiced, bigoted, diatribe. A bit of fun-poking would have certainly been acceptable and lightened a bare facts book, but Mr. Hampshire went on for, literally, pages and at every opportunity to criticize and ridicule. One wonders, if he were corect in his assessments, how a country so filled with stupid, unwashed, crude and lazy people could possibly be responsible for the creation and ongoing care of some of the world's greatest works of artistic expression. Shame on you Mr. Hampshire. Perhaps in your next revision, you'll omit the vitriolic rhetoric. It will be a much better book.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the bunch.......2000-07-05

I have read two other books in this catagory, "Living, Studying, and working in France", and "Live and Work in France" and this is the best of the three. The "Live and Work..." book is the worst. It is mainly aimed at UK residents moving to France. The "Living, Studying..." book is pretty good too, but doesn't have the concentration of good info as this book. Lots of contacts info for jobs, paperwork, etc. Very thorough. The one thing I wish it had was more about the internet access and contacts for that.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent guide.......2000-05-06

I am going to live in France in September and I recently read this book. It is invaluable and I can see I am going to be referring to it constantly come September. It's just what I needed! Everything I wanted to know and even things I didn't know I wanted to know but was glad I discovered!

3 out of 5 stars Some useful information, but severely lacking in many areas.......2006-05-29

I bought this book after accepting a job in London in 2005. After living in London for several months, I can now reflect on my relocation experience and say that this book only provided me with limited guidance.

This book attempts to provide a grand overview on the challenges that expatriates will face when they relocate to London. The book does present a broad overview of the many things expatriates need to do when relocating to London. For example, it does thoroughly explain the work permit and visa process, and it gives plenty of information on setting up utilities in a new home. It also provides some warnings about situations unique to London, such as the viscious, unregulated real estate market, and it provides some tourism information as well.

Additionally, the book provides multiple comparisons of the London boroughs, and the first section of the book provides summary information on each one. However, the summaries are frequently too short to provide a good overview of some of the more diverse boroughs, and some of the criticisms are overly harsh (as they were for Hammersmith and Fulham).

The book has a few major faults. The greatest major fault is that it fails to provide vital information needed for relocation. It does not explain how to solve the permanent housing / bank account / job paradox (where, to acquire one of these things, an individual must already have the other two). This alone significantly weakens the book. However, the book also does not provide information on other things as well. For example, it explains nothing about acquiring a credit card or building up a credit rating in the United Kingdom (which can be frustratingly difficult for a U.S. citizen). It provided some information on dentists, but it did not explain how to sign up with a dentist. It also does not explain U.K. taxes, which are very different from U.S. taxes. While this book does provide information on shopping, the shopping information is oriented towards tourists with high incomes, not residents with low or mid-level incomes.

Aside from the lack of information on important topics in this book, I also dislike it for already being out-of-date (or unfairly biased), even though it was published in 2004. Some of the criticisms of some boroughs are already out-of-date, possibly biased by older impressions from the last century. Many websites suggested by the book either have not been updated for months or are not functional. Also, the transportation information is woefully obsolete, as the Underground in particular has changed (and improved) significantly since the book's publication. I can only imagine that many sections of the book that I have not examined closely also provide dated information.

In conclusion, I would only recommend this book as a supplement to London relocation information rather than as a prime source of information. It simply fails to answer many crucial questions (especially questions about the residence/banking/job paradox), and too much of the information either seems biased or obsolete.

                          Book Description

Writing a will and taking care of other aspects of estate planning can be intimidating and complicated. But putting off dealing with these issues, or avoiding them altogether, is not the solution. Food for Thought takes you by the hand and allows you to listen in on a group of people coming to terms with the kind of estate planning questions we all face. And while the characters may be fictional, the issues are only too real.

Food for Thought follows a dinner club — seven friends at various ages and stages of life — through the course of a year. Each chapter revolves around a dinner party where the friends and neighbours gather to share fun and good food (recipes included!), but also their experiences with some of life's major events and tougher situations, all related to estate planning. As the characters work their way through experiences with aging parents, sudden death in their circle of friends, planning for the welfare of their children, and more, readers will learn how to deal with these legal and financial issues as well.

Each chapter is in three parts. First the lively conversation and bon temps of the dinner party, which touches on one or two estate planning subjects. Part tow follows with an informative discussion of the legal and financial issues, in the tone of an experienced but friendlier estate lawyer. And part three features the dinner party menu, complete with seasonal recipes and advice on preparation and serving.

Food for Thought makes the subject of estate planning more palatable by presenting it in the context of the finer and more pleasurable things in life — friends, family, good conversation, and delicious recipes.

                            Book Description

A beautifully illustrated history of the values that govern the resources of Weyerhaeuser, an American icon.

Weyerhaeuser is both a legend in the forest products industry and the steward of the largest private softwood forests in the world. Its management tenets are rooted in corporate values established 100 years ago. This book explores the origin of Weyerhaeuser's practices, and explains how the company is guided by principle-based relationships and its century-old respect for its resources and the communities with which it works. Beautifully illustrated with historic and contemporary images from the Weyerhaeuser archives, Traditions Through the Trees captures the spirit that has guided the company's destiny since 1900.
