Book Description
In the late 20th century, the world has grown increasingly smaller because of advances in technology and the erosion of the nation-state as a political paradigm. The process of globalizationwith its promises of a common culture, a common currency, and a common governmentoffers a new political model for the world that fosters unity and community. At the same time, however, this process threatens to destroy the values, norms, and ideals that particular cultures have wrought and established and to thereby diminish the power of each culture's unique identity. As globalization occurs, society must decide which values will be normative and what roles that social institutions like religion and education will play in selecting and fostering these values.
The contributors to this volume examine both the promise and the threat of globalization using the tools of theological ethics to understand and evaluate the "social contexts of life at the deepest moral and spiritual levels." This inaugural volume of a projected four volume series, Theology for the 21st Century: God and Globalization, examines five spheres of lifeeconomics (Mammon), political science (Mars), psychology and sexuality (Eros), the mass media and the arts (Muses), and religionthat foster normative values for society. As the writers argue, their efforts attempt to determine whether "God is behind globalization in any substantive way."

Book Description
This book presents a study in the foundations of monetary theory with several unique features. It consists of two parts: a critique of the varieties of neoclassical monetary theory, and a rigorous statement of the foundations of Post Keynesian monetary theory. The two parts reflect Joseph Schumpeter’s distinction between monetary theories in the divergent traditions of Real and Monetary Analysis. Part I offers a novel critique of Wicksellian and neo-Walrasian general equilibrium versions of Real analysis. The critique of Wicksell's monetary theory demonstrates the general impossibility of defining the natural rate of interest without which the loanable funds theory collapses. The critique of neo-Walrasian monetary theory, on the other hand, exploits the inessential role of ‘money’ in temporary equilibrium and overlapping generations models and develops a novel interpretation of the Patinkin controversy and the Clower finance constraint. The implications of these developments are then traced through the debates between monetarists and Keynesians. Part II presents a rigorous argument for securing the foundations of Post Keynesian monetary theory in the tradition of Monetary Analysis. In the context of the evolution of the monetary system from commodity money to credit money. Wicksell’s natural rate of interest is replaced by Keynes's marginal efficiency of capital which is in turn applied to Myrdal’s notion of monetary equilibrium to derive a formal definition of Keynes’s point of effective demand. This leads to the most novel feature of the book: the demonstration of the existence of a long-run unemployment equilibrium without the assumptions of rigid wages. The principle of effective demand is shown to break Say’s Law by placing a limit on the profitable expansion of output before full employment is reached.
Customer Reviews:
Rogers overlooked Keynes's math model in ch 20 of the GT........2005-03-25
Rogers(R) has provided an excellent general summary of the supporting analysis used in the General Theory(GT) by Keynes to analyze his theory of effective demand from a strictly monetary point of view ,based on the application of his theory of liquidity preference explanation of the rate of interest as the return or reward for not "hoarding"(holding additional cash to self insure the decision maker against the uncertainty of the future as it relates to investing in fixed amounts of capital goods).Rogers covers Keynes's analysis, then,of the money market alone, isolated from the labor market and the commodity(goods or output)market. The mathematical analysis of the money market,as it pertains to the theory of effective demand,is provided by Keynes on pp.304-306 of the GT as an addition to his mathematical modeling of the labor and commodity markets that is contained in chapter 20 of the GT.Unfortunately,R makes no use of these mathematically worked out results that Keynes used in order to construct the mathematical proof of the existence of multiple equilibria ,which would include unemployment equilibria as well as the existence of a single point of full employment called a full employment equilibrium, that Keynes would make use of in the appendix to chapter 19 of the GT in order to demonstrate that Pigou's 1933 analysis in his The Theory of Unemployment in Part II,chapters 8-10,culminating in Pigou's p.102 proof was a special case that held only if an economy was operating on the boundaries of the static(short run) and dynamic(long run)production possibilities curves that required that the mpc+mpi=1.The loanable funds theory of the rate of interest is a special case that holds iff mpc+mpi(or,more generally, the mpsp=1)=1,where the mpc is the marginal propensity to spend on consumption goods, the mpi is the marginal propensity to spend on investment goods, and mpsp is the marginal propensity to spend on all goods, including imports, exports, and public goods.Roger's discussions on pp.219-223 of his book touch on all of these topics without ever presenting the explicit mathematical summary of the theory of effective demand that Keynes presented in the form of elasticities in chapters 10,20,and21 of the GT.Keynes's overall result is that w/p=mpl/(mpc+mpi),where w/p equals the real wage and mpl equals the marginal product of labor in the aggregate. If mpc+mpi
<1,then you automatically obtain an unemployment equilibrium. It is impossible for labor to cut their money wage in the aggregate as the LHS of the equation specifying the labor market optimum must increase in order to maintain the equality with the RHS.

Customer Reviews:
Its What You Need. Seriously!.......2004-11-11
I have been a Web Design and Developer since 1998. I picked up this book in 2002 because I wanted to learn how to create an online database program and a e-commerce store. I picked it up at my local book store and found that it was very easy to read.
Today, creating an online store in less than 21 days for any of my customers is not a problem.
I highly recommend this book for anyone wishing to get their web development career started.
Use it for any type of online application.
Great book!.......2004-08-21
Very useful book with great code samples. Defiantly buy this book if you are looking to do some e-commerce programming with ASP 3.0.
Good book...great Instructor.......2003-05-11
Good book...great instructor. I bought this book a while back and since I've gotten so much from it, I figure I'll give it a plug.
If you've programmed in VB and have some ASP experience, then this is great book. A lot of the programming I've done has been within the context of a programming team. So, most of the time, I would work on a specific, limited portion of a program. For me, this book was great in that it guides me through the ENTIRE process of building a website by myself. Through working on the project in the book, I gained a good understanding of how to set up navigation for a website and also little tricks on state maintenance. (Coming fr. mainly a VB and SQL Server background, those were my weak points.) There are other little points that are too numerous to mention here. The style of the writing is clean and easily understandable. The author also gives alternative solutions to a single problem. An example, is the shopping cart. You are shown the implementation of a session cart and a database driven cart, and the pros and cons of each solution is discussed.
Anyway, to cut this short, I've built a number of websites all based on the code in here but fleshed out with SQL Server (instead of Access) and broke the implementation up into n-tier by implementing classes and objects. But that really is easy once I got the understanding and foundation of E-Commerce websites fr Stephen Walther's book.
I'm just wondering when Stephen is coming out with E-Commerce Programming with ASP.NET ... I'm sure it would be a blockbuster.
(hint hint)
Good book to get the idea.........2003-01-21
This book is not an ASP reference, but rather it's an application of ASP programming: e-commerce. If you want to build an online store and want to learn the basics buy this book. After getting the idea you can improve upon it by reading some other materials.
I teach using this book.......2002-07-29
I teach ASP in the California State University system and my students are generally happy with this book. It provides enough source code you could make a shopping cart and catalog and understand what you are doing and why you were choosing to do it with Session variables or not. There is definitely some annoying errata, and the source code doesn't match entirely with the source on the CD. I was disappointed in it's coverage of password protection. So, this is far from a perfect 5.
Someone could get up to speed with ASP pretty quickly with this book. I use it to teach ASP to a cross-section of students with moderate computer backgrounds--not computer science majors. It does not cover the basic functionality, like loops and variables, so a better book for beginners may be one such as Learn ASP in 21 Days. That is if you are still teaching or learning ASP rather than dot-Net. And I honestly don't know which is best to learn at this transitional point. I find ASP very simple to learn and teach from books like this that just tell you what to do, show you, and let you do it.

Put Your Best Foot Forward.......2005-12-22
Interviewing potential employees feels like a cross between a treasure hunt and a business transaction. The boss is looking for someone with energy, enthusiasm, job skills, and who fits with the current team. Far too many candidates have no idea of the image they project. Slumped in a chair while mumbling answers is not likely to impress an employer.

Customer Reviews:
not recommended.......2007-07-06
I do not recommend this book. It is too general and does not offer truly usable advice. The main message is: As a wealthy person, you are a target for lawsuits. Lawyers go after the deep pockets. Asset protection is very possible, but the details are complicated. Mintz writes a lot about filing the "appropriate" documents, but never bothers to explain what appropriate really means. Therefore you should leave this complicated matter to an experienced attorney, you guessed correctly, the author. The book is mostly a sales pitch for his legal practice.
I contacted him with a request to provide me with a structure my assets. I had very few at the time, but they are growing. He did not even bother to answer. I assume his fee depends on the assets under management and I assume he is just fishing for wealthy clients...
Irony of Ironies and Jailtime.......2004-10-23
I've heard that Bob Mintz was the asset protection planner for Michael and Denyse Anderson, who spent 6 months in jail in relation to the asset protection trust that Mintz drafted for them. That trust has been charitably criticized by many legal commentators as "poorly drafted" and "stupid" and in similar terms. Ironically, Mintz's book was finally published only a couple of months after the Andersons were ordered to jail for contempt, and hit the shelves while the Andersons were actually sitting in jail. Anyway, this book advocates the exact stuff that has been proven not to work. Buy it as a critical checklist in how NOT to do asset protection planning.
basic textbook for asset protection.......2002-02-16
The author introduces basic concept of asset protection very clearly. If you are the first time to read this topic , it is a good choice. However, compared with another book " Asset protection" written by Arnold S.Goldstein, I found Arnold could present more practical examples and tips to readers. So I like the ways presented by Arnold.
