Book Description
This innovative study charts the beginnings, history and fate of Interferon--one of modern medicine's most famous and infamous drugs. Interferon is part of the medical profession's armory against viral infection, cancer and MS. The story of its development and use is one of survival in the face of remarkable cycles of promise and disappointment as a miracle drug. By telling this story, Toine Pieters' book provides insight into the research, manufacture, and marketing of new bio-molecules that mark modern medical science.
Pieters' closely argued book adopts a multi-disciplinary approach in seeking to trace the extraordinary voyage of interferon. Through the lens of interferon's voyage, the book explores the interaction of the broad range of actors driving medical science such as:
* Biological and clinical researchers
* The pharmaceutical industry
* High-powered government agencies
* Doctors and patients
* The media
The book demonstrates how research on interferon led to new clinical definitions of cancer and a new rationale for therapeutic use of the drug. Interferon provides a marvelous insight into the development of one of the most controversial drugs of our time. It enhances our understanding of how medicine manufacture and marketing all played a part in pushing back the boundaries of research, from the post-penicillin era to the genetics revolution in medicine.
This study is of particular interest to undergraduates and postgraduates in the fields of History of Medicine, Pharmacology, Medical Genetics and History of Science.
Book Description
The author examines how states canand haveused international currency relationships and arrangements as instruments of coercive power for the advancement of state security. He uncovers how monetary power is affected by different monetary regimes, the sources of its success and failure, and the factors that lead states to turn to its use.
Customer Reviews:
Currency attack should not be overlooked in State's weaponry.......1999-03-29
The author chronicles the use of currency manipulation and foreign exchange attack to bring about a nation's broader political objectives. He describes the use, since the late 1800s, of a State's currency as an instrument of power - often hidden from commentators of the day - to achieve the political goals of that State. His analysis of the currency play behind the UK's attempt to gain control of the Suez Canal against the objectives of the US is particularly interesting. When addressing the nature of political power in today's econonically interdependent world, an insight into the silent role of currency power should not be overlooked.

A Charming Extension of Raving Fans and Gung Ho.......2004-09-16
Big Bucks! is the third in the series that started with Raving Fans and proceeded on to Gung Ho. Although you can certainly read Big Bucks! as a standalone, I recommend that you read the other two fine books first.
The subject is pretty simple: How to earn, keep, and enjoy substantial wealth. That description will probably sound like any of several hundred thousand self-help books written in recent years. In true Ken Blanchard style, Big Bucks! manages a refreshing new take on an old subject.
Len, our future multimillionaire, meets three spiritual leaders in a card game, who introduce him to three role models who teach him the three initial, and four eventual, rules of of getting, keeping and enjoying his Big Bucks!
Simple messages are powerful, because we can remember them. I subscribe to the themes in this book, and enjoyed reading how they were articulated.
Big Bucks! makes the pursuit of wealth seem downright spiritual, which of course it can be. In practice, the book is at its best in encouraging you to eventually have your own business. The perspective is certainly more that of an owner/manager than an employee. But the latter is addressed.
Those who do not like The One Minute Manager format will really hate this book, because it takes that format even further into simple stories and humor than usual. As such, the format is almost a satire on itself.
On the other hand, I greatly appreciate authors who can boil down important information into the gist of what needs to be done. Having considered those I know who have lived the Big Bucks! ideal, it is clear that they followed these principles unconsciously, if not consciously. I think Blanchard and Bowles have really put their finger on the pulse of the positive pursuit of wealth.
This book would be a wonderful gift for a young person starting on a career, an older person thinking about starting a business, or anyone who seems serious about acquiring wealth.
Even if you are not interested in having Big Bucks! for yourself, I think you will enjoy reading the book. And you never know. You just may decide that you are interested in Big Bucks! after all.

Life Changing - CB Book Reviewer B-STARR.......2007-04-19
B-STARR -5 STAR REVIEW
Georgia Woodbine is a true messenger a prophetess of life's real true teacher of our financial struggles, the ones we face daily without thought, Money Management - Materialism and all the woes of planning our lives without putting God's first. Many years of splurging, unnecessary spending, mismanagement that all leads to a downward spiral of unpleasant events. Satisfying our desires, but never finding the true path to success.
Georgia shares with her readers her personal experiences and knowledge in an effort to get us back on track, using the many biblical principals that we tend to ignore without even a second thought, that the path to our life successes are in the very biblical principals that we simply ignore.
Georgia's message is plain and simple "Put God first in your life," This is the message that touched me deep in my spirit. I had to do an evaluation on my inner self. I now have A simple daily prayer "The Our Father" and "Each day I know to win this war, I must put on the 'Whole Armor of God" This sets me on the path of righteousness and keeps me under the protection of My True Headship, My Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
After reading Georgia's Menu's of Do's and Don'ts and various other guidelines to becoming successful without losing my soul. I knew that my true purpose was to follow the path that God has laid for me to accomplish my mission, the one He sent me on. I simply put His Will For You & I in perspective. I know my passion for fulfilling His will has arrived because I became obedient and humble, by deciding to follow, instead of lead.
There maybe setbacks but after reading Georgia's message, which lead me to know God is faithful and just to see you and I through until the end. This Book Will Truly Change Your Life. This is my review and my testimony to How To Make Big Bucks Without Losing My/Our Souls.
Thank you Georgia for sharing your wisdom! I love Your Passion for Our Lord Jesus Christ - Everyone should read this powerful little book of wisdom. It Will Change Your Life"
(RAW Rating: 4.5) - Finding true success.......2006-06-02
Deep down, I truly believe everyone wants to live a life of purpose and find success in their relationships, careers, personal goals and spiritual life. In spite of this desire, not many are equipped with the maps or guides necessary to travel this path, with the first thing being trusting in God's Word. Georgia Woodbine's book HOW TO MAKE BIG BUCK$ WITHOUT SELLING YOUR SOUL! The Do's & Don'ts to Living a Successful Life is a good starting point for those seeking guidance, mostly in having a successful life.
In this small, but well-executed book, Woodbine provides a wealth of information to help the reader tap into their passion and turn that into a profitable business and career. She lists do's and don'ts that will keep you emotionally and spiritually focused, while at the same time, shares that God has a specific plan for each of us and only from within can we find true happiness. Though simply stated, some of the passages in this book have the ability to change one's viewpoint on life. With chapters touching on praying, believing in yourself, never sacrificing your morals, managing your time, helping others, and most importantly, keeping God first, this will be a book I'll come back to time and time again. The tips to remember closing out each chapter and the included exercises are also helpful to the reader.
HOW TO MAKE BIG BUCK$ WITHOUT SELLING YOUR SOUL! is an easy-to-read guide on living a successful and bountiful life as promised in God's Word. I closed this book feeling inspired and motivated as I reviewed the 7 P's for Prosperity: Prayer, Prospects, Planning, Presentation, Promotion, Partnerships, and Persistence and the 7 Keys to Success: Faith, Courage, Passion, Purpose, Focus, Commitment, and Patience. With each set, I am armed to fully meet my destiny and all the blessings that abound within.

Don't waste your money........2004-01-15
This is a sketchy little book with a few recycled ideas from better business start-up books.
Was probably dashed off in a day........2004-01-15
The author probably dashed this book off in a day after leafing through a few other business start-up books. The suggestions for start-ups are very, very sketchy and mostly unrealistic unless you have a lot of capital and/or specific knowledge of that business.
Help for the Little Guy.......2003-01-15
I wanted to find something to do during retirement that would bring in some extra money. I got lots of ideas from this book. The best part of this book, to me, is that these ideas are do-able. I won't need to borrow a lot of money to get started.

Customer Reviews:
A very usable and practical guidebook.......2005-11-15
What I liked best was that this was not just a theoretical examination - but rather an excercise that gets the reader to take a very pragmatic examination of their overall needs and wants. Most of us have thought about those things that affect our career choice at some point, but this book takes one through an organized evaluation of the many aspects that are important in selecting a career - and does so using worksheets and other means that give the reader and organized and well thought out picture of career options that best meet their needs. I think this is an excellent book that really gets your personal factors affecting career choice in front of you in a very clear and straightforward manner.
A needed book.......2002-02-14
This book is really excellent. One of the reasons is because it specifically addresses career *changes*, as well as just careers in general. There are certain details and differences, especially in the psychology of the career changer. I believe this books hits that nail on the head.
There are some sections that really, really help you get to the core of what you were born to do...which is a very hard process.
Rob
Excellent book for career changers.......2001-11-06
I have read quite a few of these types of books and I must say that Changing Careers for Dummies is in a class by itself. It is an extremely useful and enjoyable book. The author steps you through a reassessment of your likes, skills and talents in a manner that makes the process much simpler than is the case with other career changing books. The book also has a friendly, almost nurturing feel that is welcome during a time of uncertainty. McClelland almost makes it seem that changing careers is something to regard with joy and positive anticipation. Highly recommended!!
A fabulous book.......2001-10-13
This book came at a fortuitous time in my life. My company had just gone through a small downsizing maneuver under the guise of 'enhanced performance system' employee reviews. It certainly made me sit up and notice, especially since my job and I aren't really well suited to each other. Ms. McClelland's book gave me much more insight into what I really wanted to do, and how to go about it. I especially liked the section where you find out what interests you, out of the seven sections, I found four that fit me. Interestingly enough, none of the four are in the area in which I currently work. She also gives the reader permission to dream of ANY career, and not to be bound by old thoughts and worries. I intend to change careers in about a year, and will take the discoveries I made by reading this book into my next job. It can truly help anyone who wants to move on to something else, something they've always wanted to do!

This groundbreaking and important work also offers helpful steps for identity-theft victims to recover their identities as well as effective preventative measures.
Customer Reviews:
The Facts of Identity Theft.......2005-04-08
The book deals with every day instances in which, we carelessly throw out financial papers, seemingly innocent statements of bills and open ourselves up to invasion by simply not thinking about what the consequences of divulging information to people will be. It parallels Identity Theft from a US and UK perspective. It was a fascinating comparison of the two systems, which are very similar in some respects.
It gives good advice on what steps to take if you have been a victim and also resources to check credit reports. It is very well organized and easily understood.
