1 out of 5 stars Theoretical and uninformative.......2006-10-03

This text is written by an academic who, it would appear, has little practical knowledge or understanding of the Middle East or Islam. A very theoretical approach that discusses little of relevence to today's issues on Islam.

3 out of 5 stars Simon Murden concepts revisited.......2003-09-30

Islam, The Middle East, and the New Global Hegemony by Simon W.
Murden published by Lyne Rienner Publishers, in 2002 takes a
liberalist perspective of International Relations Theory by
looking at the free markets and the western hegemonic
structure and throwing light on how the Muslim world interacts with the Western hegemony.

It makes an interesting analogy when it states the fact that Hegemony has changed structure and has now become the diffuse structure and the competition for power is in the realm of cyberspace as much as in the hyperreal and the global systems [p.7]

This is an important point to remember because in the same vein, the author says that U.S might be forced to defend it's turf in the Middle-East in order to maintain the image of a hegemon in the rising pressures of China or the European Union challenging it's hegemonic status in a multi-polar world. It goes over the same things that the other authors like Gerges, Esposito and
probably a million other scholars have repeated themselves hoarse about - the reason for the U.S interests in the region, the crowding together of individual identities and the
formulation of Pan-Arabism/Islam , the tenets of Islam.

What is interesting in this amalgamation and strengthening of identities is the portrayal of OIC [The Organization of the Islamic Conference] as a limited counter-hegemon. He also adds that the OIC was successful in giving a common identity and a strong voice but that remained restricted to rhetoric because the different interpretations ofIslam led to break-ups. He also observed that the stance of the OIC was getting increasingly moderate in its tone.

What is disturbing about this variety of scholarship is the fact that though it addresses pertinent and important questions' yet it makes sweeping generalizations and claims which could end up doing more harm than good to a lucid understanding of the topic under study. [ statements like - Muslims have a distinct identity is right but then this kind of a statement runs the danger of being blown out of proportion by right wing and orthodox authors] Thus in attributing meanings and subjectivity to such a sensitive topic as this, one needs to exercise more caution and restraint of language than is being shown here.

It also speaks of a Western bias when it talks of a liberal idea and expresses skepticism on the Islamic culture's ability to get assimilated. Modernity could mean different things depending on the culture under consideration and modernity as understood in the Western world might not even be relevant or better for that part of the World.

    2 out of 5 stars no math.......2007-05-25

Overall this book was OK. It presented the key information in money and banking and the authors often made it entertaining to read. However the one major flaw with the book is the lack of ANY math. I know that some books are marketed for a more mathematical approach and thus contain more advanced mathematics accordingly. However this book had so little math it was laughable. I recall one section where the authors said "this can be proven mathematically, but for now just take our word for it..."
NO, I won't take your word for it, because knowing the underlying principals is to truly understanding anything.

    1 out of 5 stars Poorly written.......2006-03-22

Principles of Money, Banking, and Financial Markets contains a great deal of information regarding economics in the United States. As a student, I find it to be poorly written. The authors/editors make constant reference throughout the text to other sections of the text. For example, we will discuss this in depth in chapter seven, but for now, lets reflect our continued study from chapter two and three. By doing so, we will be better prepared to read chapter eleven when we get to it. If the authors / editors left out the references and just left the actual information needed to learn the material, the student would be able to follow the material and perhaps understand the topic better. I am strongly encouraging our economics department to seek another text for future semesters.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful handbook on getting the most from advice that bills by the hour.......2006-10-13

This introductory book provides a solid overview of how to work with consultants, although it does not break any new ground. It contains checklists, bullet points, surveys, case studies and forms. With this boost, even those who are not familiar with hiring consultants can gain a basic understanding of how to select and manage outside experts. The book also explains how to complete a challenging project with the help of consultants or contractors, although when it discusses the regulatory environment, it is very oriented to requirements in the United Kingdom. Though some of his sentences get convoluted, author Harold Lewis's writing style is light enough to enable managers to skim while still absorbing his basic ideas and finding the topics they need. We recommend this book to new managers and others who are hiring a consultant for the first time.

5 out of 5 stars Beating the competition.......2003-04-10

That's what it's all about especially now that the i-banking field has contracted so much. Still, getting the grades, the right recommendations, landing the right internships, going out for a bunch of different extracurricular activities and then finally preparing as much as possible for the interviews are all key to getting the job you want. At least that's what i've found. I used this guide as part of the preparation process, having been recommended it by a college counselor. Best advice I ever got. Good stuff. Very thorough. I've received exactly the offer I wanted. All my work and research has paid off.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely thorough preparation.......2003-03-04

This guide provided excellent preparation material. It covered everything from the pre-interview cocktail session to the follow-up after the interview. The information provided in the guide was clear and easy to follow, so that flipping through for review of specific information was a breeze. My copy is all dog-eared from nervously flipping throught it again and again during my plane ride to perform my interviews. But my nervousness proved unfounded. When I felt stuck during the interviews, I just thought back to what I had read in the guide, and everything went smoothly. I even got to choose among a few of the firms I was really interested in. I recommend this to anyone who wants to be an analyst on Wall Street, but feels like they need a little help getting through the interviews.

5 out of 5 stars Concise and helpful........2001-12-18

This guide is so compact that you can quickly get up to speed on I-Banking interviews in one night, if you had to. It truly covers only the essentials, without the clutter and filler that clogs other similar guides. If you can only afford one and you need a crash course, this is the one to go for.

              2 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2001-10-21

This report was disappointing. A more useful report on IBanking interviews is the Vault.com 2002 Guide to Finance Interviews or the Harvard guide to finance careers.

5 out of 5 stars Great information for college students on a budget!.......2007-08-04

I found some good places to shop for wholesale kid's and college student stuff. I have to watch my budget as a college student so buying wholesale is smart. A little small, but then again it is not for trade people, but ordinary people like me. I had to research wholesale stuff at the library. They were mostly industrial huge books for people who have to buy thousands to get a wholesale price. I don't have the time for that and the budget. So good book for someone just looking for a way to afford some things.

              3 out of 5 stars MIDDLE MEN!!!.......2007-07-27

This is a good book for those who want to buy things at 2 dollars off the retail, chock full of middlemen that you have to call. If your looking for wholesale distributors for selling for a profit, this is not the book for you. They all have minimum orders of like 1000 dollars too!

              5 out of 5 stars Helpful Book.......2004-04-18

I found this book very helpful in helping me locate wholesale providers in software and games. Buying games at a discount or wholesale is an excellent way for me to test out games. If you expect to get a wholesale book that divulge valuable information on buying things that are of limited quality to the public for wholesale, then expect to pay thousands of dollars for a list provided by a consulting company or better yet, just cross your fingers, and hope for luck. This book is not about miracles, but it is a book offering a directory on companies who provide more common things that can be purchased wholesale or at a large discount. In that sense, if you are looking for that, get this book. I personally was happy enough with what I found in this book to give it a 5.

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent Source.......2004-02-29

Just the portion on buying wholesale games and electronics is worth the price of this book. You would not be able to find some of these sources on the internet. I've tried before and that's why I got the book. An excellent source.

4 out of 5 stars Make Buying Wholesale Easier.......2003-10-04

Some good advice about buying things at wholesale that every budget-conscious consumer and small business can use.

Jason Goodwin's account of the product and the business that Otis created is an American story of continuous growth and reinvention.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite as 'elevating' as I expected.......2004-02-13

I enthusiastically added "Otis" to my Wish List when it was released, largely on the strength of a positive review in the WSJ, and recently acquired a copy after a decent, two-year wait. The companion editorial and positive customer reviews on this page amply show how and where the book is strongest, in detailing the corporate-history activities that promoted Otis to prominence and dominance in the elevator industry.

BUT, what I found hugely missing from the book was a systematic, engineering-oriented account of elevator technologies, in the form of line drawings, photographs or diagrams. The 48 pp of B&W material alluded to in the reviews cover mostly on-site head shots, more appropriate for an in-house corporate publication.

The text makes numerous references to particular elevator technologies, favoring them with a cursory verbal description, but no real sense of what an installation looked like. The only verbal description that does justice to any conceptual design is Goodwin's description of Otis' early "stunt" elevator, where a rope pulled upward on a flat, flexible steel bar mounted flat on the cage roof, and wider than the cage, so that when pulled, the bar bent upward in the middle and retracted from the side rails, allowing the car free travel, but when the rope was cut, the steel bar flattened out and its projecting ends stuck in the side rails to arrest the fall.

So, if you want to learn something about the mechanics of elevators, look elsewhere; perhaps in a classic compendium of old Scientific American issues and articles from the 19th century entitled, "Free Enterprise Forever." In short, the book is competently researched and written, but not very interesting. A better bet is The Mechanical Turk, by Tom Standage, an intriguing, ilustrated account of a seemingly mechanical chess-playing wizard.

              5 out of 5 stars Better than I expected.......2001-10-15

I've worked for Otis for nearly 30 years. I thought I knew how the company started and grew, but I was wrong. This book, produced by United Technologies, Otis' parent corporation, could have just been a promotional piece, but to the credit of the author I found it to be a well researched, well written chronical of Otis' humble New York beginnings in 1853 through today's global presence.

It is a book written for people who are interested in the growth of the world's greatest cities and a company that was instrumental for that growth.

The biggest surprise was the book's readability. Goodwin helped me understand the personalities and motivations of the people who brought Otis to where it is today. He painted pictures of the situations surrounding the events which helped me understand the logic behind Otis' progress. I felt he dealt honestly with United Technologies' takeover of Otis in 1976 (which I experienced) and brought the influences of Otis' global operations into perspective.

It is an eye opener for internal Otis associates, and an educational experience for non-Otis readers who want to learn how a company can start from nothing and influence the way we all live. It is a book about machines, business, cities, and time. I highly recommend it.

              5 out of 5 stars Up-Down..None of above...........2001-10-09

"Elevators'..is modern sounding, compared to stevadore implication of British..'Lift'. Began in 1853 by mechanic Elisha Otis,(NY foundry), this corporate history was commissioned by parent co...United Technologies, which paid in advance for 'modest # of copies". Otis's automatic braking system took fear out of skyscrapers-, but implosions of WTC has put it back
