    Book Description

In this accessible yet rigorous textbook, Patrick McNutt presents a clear and refreshing approach to a wide range of topics in law, economics and antitrust. The issues covered include duty and obligation, contracting, liability, property rights, efficient entry, compensation, oligopoly pricing, issues in strategic antitrust and merger analysis. Using a selection of case studies where appropriate, and examples based in game theory, the book examines these issues from both a law and economics and a microeconomics perspective. Emphasis is placed on a thorough assessment of the economic and legal arguments, blending the rigors of microeconomic analysis with common law standards. The analysis contained in the book will not only review, and indeed adapt neoclassical economic analysis but will also apply some of the methodology from the relatively new paradigm known as `law and economics' to many of the issues. The book also addresses the increasing overlap between emerging approaches in public choice and in law and economics. Practitioners in competition law and regulation of utilities will draw great value from this original and pertinent volume, as will scholars in the areas of regulation, competition law, competition policy and law and economics.

          Book Description

Teaching ASP.NET in a non-linear format that creative thinkers can easily grasp and understand without the typical programming jargon. Provides clear and concise, hands-on, real-world examples right from the beginning of the book. The book contains a natural progression by providing foundational information in the opening chapters. Content will be presented with "hands-on" examples so the opening chapters will also be laying the groundwork for more advanced subjects by not only presenting the information but by writing code as well. The middle section of the book covers the key cast members on the .NET stage including HTML Controls, Web Controls and List Controls. The third and final section of the book covers more advanced issues in ASP.NET including data access and security issues.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2006-02-25

The writer of this book has a very laid back style and uses simple words to explain asp.net concepts. He uses a lot of examples and goes through them in detail. The book also has a very pleasant appearance and makes you want to read it. This is actually my first asp.net book that i've read and i liked it.

ASP.NET for Web Designers by Peter Ladka
          Published by Peachpit Press
Reviewed by Larry Hess HuNTUG member

Just as his cover states "Are you sick and tired of all those 1,200-page technical manuals that seen to be written in a language only Martians could understand?" Mr. Ladka has created a manual that is designed for the beginner that's not boring for the more experienced web developers. He shows both VB.Net and C# samples of all code snipping.
The book is divided into 4 main sections:
          Part 1 ASP.Net Overview
          1. ASP.Net Basics
          2. Understanding Object-Oriented Programming
          3. Scripting Basics
          4. ASP.NET Pages
          5. Understanding User Controls
          Part 2 Designing with ASP.Net
          6. HTML Server Controls
          7. Web Server Controls
          8. Web Form Validators
          9. Displaying Data with Server Controls
Part 3 Advanced Features in ASP.Net
          10. ADO.NET
          11. State Management in ASP.NET
          12. Form-Based Security in ASP.NET
          13. XML in ASP.Net
          Part 4 Appendixes
          A. Installing the .NET Framework
          B. Compiling Custom Objects
For the beginner the flow of the book takes the reader through the steps of designing their first web site with the standard "HELLO WORLD" approach, with each chapter building on the previous chapter information.
For the more experienced web developer the reader can jump in any chapter and get the information needed in that area. This is one of the best laid out and structured books' I've read.
The web link to the code snipping was the hardest thing about the whole book.

4 out of 5 stars Unique Book that doesn't regurgitate the SDK docs.......2004-05-02

A unique book that serves as a strong starting point for non-programmers who want an overview of asp.net basics and who do not all-ready know how to program. Why is "ASP.NET for Web Designers" a unique book? Many asp.net intro books assume prior programming experience; many read as though MS gave the author an outline and content templates for the writer to <<add intro paragraph here>>. Ladka however thinks for himself: the result- a useful & unique book. Yes, he covers the server controls as all intro books should, but in addition to covering the bare minimum he does a nice job explaining and demonstrating how to implement OO concepts in your development.

Downside: He tries too hard to make the book's examples "user friendly." Ladka likes food allot and all the examples revolve around this topic to the point annoying the reader.

Over all a great book for someone wanting an introduction to Asp.Net and an intro on how to program with it.

          3 out of 5 stars Just Okay.......2004-01-09

The book is okay in that it gives you a quick and dirty overview of ASP.NET. The code examples are okay but where the book falls short in that the author babbles a lot rather than actually discussing the subject.

4 out of 5 stars Decent, not the best..........2003-12-17

This book is good for anyone wanting to get their feet wet with asp.net. It's nice they presented both vb.net and C# code however, this book is riddled with syntax errors like the holes in swiss cheese.
Peter Ladka did a good job with the overall material of this book, but his "Technical Reviewers" must have not been paid for their efforts, otherwise they would have probably paid more attention to detail.

          Book Description

Flash.NET is the book which is your ticket to the future of application design. Two cutting-edge technologies, joined in union to provide the perfect marriage.

Macromedia Flash MX really excels when it comes to presenting graphical, interactive content. It's a superb tool for building user interfaces and for presenting content that changes over time.

Microsoft's .NET Framework is a suite of tools for building powerful applications, both on and off the Web.

Put them together, and a whole raft of new possibilities opens up for both: powerful logic and functionality with a rich, flexible interface on the front. Put them together, and you get Flash.NET.

In this book, a team of expert designers and developers show you the basics of adding dynamic .NET content and turbo-charged server-side functionality to your Flash MX projects.

In short, you need this book if you're a Flash designer who doesn't want to get left behind when all the cool people have started utilizing the power of .NET with their applications.

To run the examples in this book for yourself, you'll need:

          * Microsoft Windows 2000/XP
          * Macromedia Flash MX
          * Microsoft .NET Framework SDK (free download from Microsoft)

The book also covers Macromedia Flash Remoting MX.

          1 out of 5 stars So disjointed.......2003-11-04

A bunch of quasi-authors get together to write a book that ends up being less than useful because one hand doesn't know what the other is doing. Some sections are better than others, but the overall result is still quite poor. Full of errata, mistakes, oversights, and shoddy editing - stay away from this book unless you find it at the deep discount bin for next to nothing.

I hope these guys learn a lesson (whoever runs these books now) and learn not to hire a whole slew of article writers to make a book. They're almost never good this way.

It would be better if it can provide a CD addition having solid source files for the ASP.NET integrations and web service consumptions.

I spent quite some time mark down the errata and tried to get the code to work. It turned out that the original code was working after cleaned up some typos, while the one in the errata did not work at all. The Clock example in page 29 is one.
The jokes example in Chapter 2 got another problem. Something is missing and code did not work. No errata for this one on support site. May be the other review is right - this book is not for beginners.

5 out of 5 stars Very thorough but not for beginners.......2003-02-10

This book is divided between accounts of ASP.NET and databases, and their integration with Flash movies. First of all, this is not a book for beginners. You need a reasonable amount of IT under your belt to take advantage of the content. In short you need to know something about programming to pick up the threads in the text.

I found the examples interesting and the last two case studies are quite well elaborated. I found PenPad particularly interesting. The code is downloadable from the authors' website and that makes up forthe lack of a CD (just about).

Throughout the book the authors use C# as the server scripting lanaguage which surprised me. You won't learn C# from thisbook and I suspect that without some background reading, the scripts will seem meaningless.

The database examples (using pubs2) are fairly standard, but again there is the unwritten assumption that you know something about these artefacts anyway. If you don't have a few undergrad CS course under your belt, the two chapters on databases will lose your interest very quickly. The flash elemetns are really introduced to illustrate principles (which I was happy with) rather than develop red hot applications.

Overall, I was pleased with the book. It fills a gap between the traditional programmer and the web designer. The examples are good and reasonably developed.

If I have any reservations, it is that the authors rarely take the time to develop a design before presenting code snippets. Personally I dislike this approach intensely. I find many students unable to decouple their designs from pieces of code and it encourages bad software engineering practices. there is no excuse in a data processing textbook for not throwing up half a dozen flow charts to give a flavour of the control logic. That point being made, I would certainly recommend this book to any reasonably experienced programmer, but not to a beginner.

            Book Description

Many businesses now encourage employees to establish an office in the home, and magazines and books provide a ton of information on how to organize and start up a business. It is estimated that there will be over 20 million home offices before the year 2000. This book shows the importance of telecommunications to the home/small office, the existing home telephone arrangement and its problems, and how the standard may be used to design, plan, install, and test a system that will carry the home office into the future.

Book includes 17 one-minute tips to improve meetings. Includes tips for before, during and at the end of the meeting. Also includes 16 one-minute tips to improve business writing. There's also a section with tips to improve your presentations.

I was looking for some basic presentation items to include in a train-the-trainer session. But as I got to looking at some of the other tips, I realized that I could benefit from them, too.

The book has some excellent exercises. The one on 'Are You Paying Fines For Your Company Meetings?' is meant to heighten awareness about the cost of poorly run meetings. Another exercise provides a checklist of items to consider when calling a group meeting that could interfere with productivity. Those are just a few of the really good material covered by this well-done book.

Getting a government job can lead to job security and peace of mind. The problem is that getting a government job requires extensive and complex paperwork. Now, for the first time, this book reveals the secrets and shortcuts of professional writers in preparing job-winning government applications such as these: The Standard Form 171 (SF 171)--several complete samples; the Optional Form 612 (OF 612)--several complete samples; KSAs--samples of KSAs tailored to jobs ranging from the GS-5 to GS-12; Ranking Factors--how-to samples; Postal Applications; Wage Grade paperwork; and Federal Resumes--see the different formats required by various government agencies. This book is part of the Anne McKinney Career Series by PREP Publishing.

4 out of 5 stars Finally I understand how to this!.......2005-10-12

I have been trying to get a job with the federal government for a long time. I was never sure how to write the 612, resume and KSA's . After reading this book, I feel like I have a really excellent chance to get the job that I want. The real life examples and tips are extremely helpful. I'll keep you posted...

2 out of 5 stars Post office section is small.......2002-05-29

This book says it covers the Post Office KSA'S. It covers about one third of the KSA required to get a supervisors job. The rest and not even discussed. I am still looking for the book which shows all of the KSA's, this book is not the one I wanted.

4 out of 5 stars Medical Records Technician.......2002-02-26

I bought this book for my husband. Hek, this book is fantastic. We utilize the information, converted it to his present job and he went from GS-5 to GS-6/7/8. It is good for both straight civilians and former military people if you know how to use it. Would be a 5 star if it had KSA's for the medical field.

I purchase this book, in order to apply for a merit promotion vacancy, I have learned that this book is primary oriented for people who have been in the armed forces in a MOS, that will provide them a transfer to the civilian life. This book does not help to a career employee, even it was previously a member in the armed forces, and in a combat MOS. I really, don't think I will take that much of advantage from this book, as from the information I have gathered through the website. I critized the title, that is not specifiying to who is this book oriented and indicating that is not for everybody.
