Many undergraduate texts treat macroeconomics as a set of distinct topics rather than as a unified body of theory and empirical findings. In contrast, this text by Alan Auerbach and Laurence Kotlikoff uses a single analytic framework--the two-period life-cycle model--to explore and connect each of the major issues in contemporary macroeconomics. The model describes the evolution of the economy over time in terms of the behavior of overlapping generations of individuals, each of whom lives for two periods: youth and old age. This versatile framework can encompass most macroeconomic schools of thought through the alteration of key assumptions. The use of one basic model also allows the authors to explore important topics not always addressed adequately in other texts; these include credit constraints, real business cycles, generational accounting, and international capital flows markets.

Written in a clear, accessible style, this shortened and simplified second edition provides a systematic way to interpret macroeconomic outcomes, to understand various policy proposals, and to appreciate how individuals and firms fit into the big picture.

A Wonderful Book.......2000-05-09

Auerbach and Kotlikoff did a great job! I knew absolutely nothing about macroecnomics before and thought this discipline is totally above and beyond me. An accidental curiosity drove me to pick up this book. BAM! The book and I clicked! Auerbach and Kotlikoff integrated bisic principles of the macroecomics into their original life-model, make them very easy to digest! Besides, the writing style is succint and clear. The language is never complicated and alienating, because the authors aim at conveying some real princles of macroecomics, not showing off their linguistic sophistication! What I appreciate most is three things:

1. The book cites numerous tables and charts that help me understand the texts better .(although the texts are already very well written.)

2. At the end of each chapter, there is a chapter summary. I appreciate the authors' effort to keep the readers' interests in mind! I find this feature very helpful. It saves me the trouble of writing my own summary. ( I have this habit.)

3. A great number of case studies illustrate the theories meaningfully.

I took a Macro class that used the textbook and we were required to use the study guide. I thought that for the most part, the questions were irrelevant and did not enhance the book. Get this only if it's absolutely neccessary.

Consider this - Web Services and SOAP is perhaps the only recallable evolution of technology that has witnessed the single largest involvement of standards bodies and industry bellwethers. The result? A puzzling plethora of proffered protocols that continues to confuse both sideliners and early adopters every day.

While managers are finding it increasingly difficult to understand the direction, developers are craving for clarity, consistency and a unified approach for WS adoption. "Give me the tools" they cry every day, while they keep adding to their "To Read" list a handful of new acronyms every week. The big question is, when can we build Rome, if at all?

With a gentle and brief (thank god!) introduction to underlying concepts such as SOAP, XML and UDDI, authors start talking about broader concerns - conversation, transaction, security, workflow, QoS and everything in between. While accentuating nuances of evolving standards and guessing the future trends, authors offer strategies, patterns, and tips on pitfalls to avoid. They skirt around the political interoperability issues around J2EE and .NET and focus purely on the standards. Architect's Note included at the end of every chapter makes title justified.

An implementation of WS-based ordering system presented as a case study concludes the book by bringing it all together through excellent step-by-step approach.

Although almost a year old, this book can be a survival guide for people in the trenches and the ROI-Savvy managers as well. It helps you tell the wheat from the chaff.

An excellent overview.......2004-07-12

A great guide to designing and implementing web services and the common challenges and pitfalls that can be found along the way.

Examples, patterns and case study provide excellent illustration while the subject matter is delivered in a consistent and surprisingly easy to read manner.

I'd recommend this book to anyone that wants to find out the ins and outs of providing web-services, rather than developing a simple web service for their own benefit - most .NET books can deal with that in a couple of pages.

Buy this book to dig deeper and find out about the issues that you should be considering.

Save your money.......2004-07-11

This book isn't much better than freely available online documents on the same subjects. The book suffers from the usual problems of a book with too much level content and no practical hands-on information -- Architecture with out practical solution or a prototype model is constructing a building with out foundation. The authors explained individual topics to the extent that it is even confusing. I found this is the last book to be used for quick reference. This book is quite useless to me and I am a googling around for better information.

Waste of money.......2004-06-23

I bought this book with lot of hopes, all I got is a JUNK. This book is nothing but a copy of specs obtained from OACIS and W3C. If you think about on implementing a WORKING Web services architecture using Java or .NET, then all you find is ZERO content. There is no working real-world architecture or implementation example discussed in this book. All the chapters are disconnected.

Waste of money.

Best coverage on the topic.......2004-04-07

Over the past year, I have read quite a few books on Web Services, some good, others not so good... but this book really stands out.
The concepts were covered in sufficient details and in a very informal manner. It gives you a very good idea what you would need to consider when deciding to implement a SOA solution in your organization.

Great Jobs for Engineering Majors is a good book to pick-up when you are finishing your degree in engineering. The first half covers searching for a job and the second half covers career paths such as careers in industry, consulting, government, education, and non-technical paths. It aids you in assessing your talents and skills, exploring your options, targeting your ideal career, and following through to get the job you really want.

I only read the first edition but hopefully there is additional text to explain how to search for jobs using the Internet and various email strategies in this edition. That was the only thing missing from the 1st edition.
