5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction..........2001-10-31

Here is a practical comment for the typical economics graduate student: Buy this book if you want to start using Mathematica!

What does a typical economics graduate student need? First, s/he needs to review her/his knowledge of mathematics. Second, s/he needs to learn how to use the tool (math) to solve an economic problem. Cliff J. Huang and Philip S. Crooke's book is helpful in both respects. While they are introducing the basic language of Mathematica they review most of the undergraduate math. And they teach with a hands-on approach--that is, you solve almost every problem using Mathematica.

Mathematica is a great tool for economics graduate students, it helps you out in understanding the basic intuitions behind mathematical concepts--because you do not have to solve complex problems (Mathematica solves them for you), you just have to understand them. Of course, students are advised to consult their professors to choose the right computer software or programming language. Mathematica can do a lot, but some other software might be much more practical for your PhD thesis project...

5 out of 5 stars Exceptionally valuable contribution to graduate economics.......1998-10-05

This book covers mathematical methods topics that would ordinarily constitute the core of a one semester course at the first year graduate level in economics. The book could also be used at the advanced undergraduate level. It is the first book to fully integrate Wolfram Research's Mathematica software into a study of mathematical methods for economists. The authors' stated objective in this integration is to relieve students, via use of computer software, of the rather tedious computations typically associated with mathematics for economists coursework so that attention can be focused on underlying principles. To further this objective, a Mathematica notebook, MathEcon, comprised of functions commonly implemented in mathematics for economists courses accompanies the book.

The book features fifteen chapters including coverage of topics in linear algebra, quadratic forms, vector calculus, functional properties, mathematical programming, and differential and difference equations. The first two chapters provide an introduction to Mathematica and a review of calculus. Chapters are divided into sections and subsections and all chapters include exercises at the conclusion of each subsection. Many, though not all, of the exercises involve use of the Mathematica software. Numerous examples are included in all chapters and the use of Mathematica to illustrate concepts and problem solving is prevalent throughout the book. In this regard, the numeric, symbolic, and, in particular, graphic capabilites of Mathematica are used extensively to explain concepts and example problem solutions.

This book can only be regarded as an exceptionally valuable contribution to graduate education in economics. The choice and coverage of topics is appropriate for the mathematics for economists course. Mathematical concepts are presented with uncommon clarity. For example, the chapter on eigensystems is perhaps the best treatment of this topic in the mathematics for economists literature. The many examples contained in the book provide for enhanced comprehension of related concepts and would by themselves elevate this book above the field as an educational device. Exercises are generally well suited for reinforcement of material covered in the chapter subsections. The thoughtful integration of related computer capabilities and provision of the MathEcon package fully achieve the authors' stated objective. This book is an obvious first choice as a textbook in mathematics for economists courses.

      Book Description

This book offers the most systematic analysis available of the impact of European Central Bank monetary policy on the national economies of the Eurozone. There has been a large increase in research into better understanding how changes in monetary policy affect these economies since Central Banks have become accountable for meeting specific targets in inflation, output and employment. The research to date has largely focused on national central banks, pioneered by the study of the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank and the impacts of its policy decisions on the U.S. economy.

      Download Description

Proper conduct of monetary policy requires understanding the monetary transmission mechanism, to monitor the economy, make decisions on the stance of policy, and explain the policy actions to the public. Hence, gathering evidence on the monetary transmission mechanism in the euro area has been a priority for the Eurosystem. This book presents the results of a multi-year collaborative project conducted by the European Central Bank and the other Eurosystem central banks. First, macro data are consistently investigated with both VARs and structural models for the area as a whole and for individual countries. Second, the book contains an unprecedented set of studies on the effects of monetary policy using bank and firm panel data. The results described in country case studies and overview essays by central bank economists, along with a discussion chapter by eminent academics, provide an essential contribution to the latest research.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful view on working with Serivce Providers.......2001-08-28

Having worked as a consultant for one of the main firms, I have worked on many Service provider assignments. Usually they involve either planing for the startup of a new provider or starting new services within an existing one. One reading this book I found it very true to life and it provides excellent checklists both as reminder to the experienced and also to aid the novices in what needs to be done. The case studies show alot of the thought processes these providers go through and I would highly recommend this book for anyone working in a Service Provider or anyone thinking of starting one up.

This book is packed with different ideas about how to put away a pay check while cruising. The book also includes helpful material about how to approach the job market in a way that you don't upset the locals, something many of us don't consider. On the other hand, I found many of the author's suggestions for those of us with hands on skills, no professional skills, or no skills at all were on the common sense level (chartering, restaurant, hotel, construction, boat work, etc.). If you have some of the professional skills mentioned in this book (IT professionals, teachers, advertising execs, etc.), the author describes ways to take your career on the water. On the whole, it was a good read that sparked the imagination with future possibilities. Overall, I would recommend it.

Gary Rivlin tells the story of Ron Conway, the man who has placed more bets on Internet start-ups than anyone eise in Silicon Valley. Conway is a reader-friendly way into the realm of angel financing, where independently wealthy investors link up with companies just as they are being born. The Godfather of Silicon Valley takes you into this fascinating world on the edges of the financial universe, where the pace is frantic, the story lines are rich, and every moment is perilous.

                5 out of 5 stars Reads like a novel!.......2002-07-06

The dot-com rise and fall that you can read in a couple of sittings. Rivlin does a really good job of telling the story of the madness of the dot-com bubble, and then its precipitous fall, through the story of one man, Ron Conway, who invested in more Internet startups (240) than anyone else. Rivlin has a good eye for detail, and his descriptions of some of the crazier ideas that Conway funded alone are worth the price of the book. You know things are going to end badly but that's the fun of this book, Rivlin somehow manages to make it all suspensful.

2 out of 5 stars Would make a great article for the New York Times Magazine.......2002-06-06

A fine attempt, but it comes up lacking. First, the book is short and reads quick. I had the feeling that this would have been better off being a Washington Post 3 part series (boring series though). All characters are sketchy and I never found myself caring about any of them. I found dot.bomb a much better read.

                5 out of 5 stars A great read!.......2001-12-19

Rivlin has written a marvelous, entertaining peek into the strange alice-in-wonderland world of high tech finance. Rivlin didn't allow himself to be co-opted by his subjects and the result is a frank and honest view that will make some insiders wince, but delight anyone trying to understand what makes Silicon Valley tick.

4 out of 5 stars Can't help but watch the car wreck..........2001-12-12

This is a fast, easy read. Perhaps it's a bit cruel to kick a man while he is down. But it sure is something to watch the action as he accelerates down the dot-com highway and then crash horribly.

Read this book, learn very little, but what's a few hours in a down economy?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on the Burst of the Internet Bubble.......2001-12-11

I have read all four of Rivlin's books and whether he is writing about Chicago's first black mayor Harold Washington or Bill Gates, I have always found his reportage highly skilled and his writing, while occasionally biting in style, is descriptive, crisp and easy-to-read. That would apply to "King of the Angels" as well. The fact that Conway "invited" Rivlin to follow him for a few days should not preclude Rivlin from including "warts" in his portrayal of Conway, as the previous reviewer suggests. I look forward to Rivlin's next book.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2007-05-21

This was not at all helpful. It is nothing more than a notebook full of lines with some vocabulary words on the side of the page. It doesn't even have an index, table of contents etc. I was very disappointed with this and would not recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars smooth transaction, exact product, nice&easy supplier.......2007-05-14

                1 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2007-02-22

I expected this book to be more than a workbook to supplement another textbook. I was looking for something which actually provided content on Building, Measuring and Managing Brand Equity.

Maybe I misread the description of this book. I was actually looking for the text of the main book in paperback format.

5 out of 5 stars All you need for Brand Management.......2007-02-07

This covers every aspect of Brand Management. There are other books that specialize on some aspects of branding, but this one is a complete reference.

5 out of 5 stars The One Source.......2003-11-24

If you only buy one Branding book this is the bible. Wow, the price on the second edition has gone way up.

                    Book Description

This book examines writings on multilateralism -- many sided institutional and organizing international relations. Drawing comparisons across cultures, it demonstrates how far-flung observers enrich understanding by regarding multilateralism from vantage points unlike those which underlie the dominant American literature. Authors illustrate how political, economic and other conditions influence the concerns animating works under scrutiny, thereby elucidating the uses of theorizing.
