2 out of 5 stars Labour Slant.......2001-06-17

I was deeply disappointed with this book. It should be entitled A LABOUR SLANT on Models of Political Economy. Don't come to this book looking for a relatively impartial look at Keynesianism or Monetarism or any other model. All Monetarists have horns. If you don't mind the 'Labour Party good, everybody else immoral' slant of this book then this might be the book for you. Finally, here is the kicker. I have always voted for left wing candidates. But I didn't know that I was buying a Labour tract.

    Book Description

The mark of a civilized economy is national money; the English pound, the Australian dollar, the Indian rupee. The mark of a savage economy is untamed money in the form of cowrie shells, silver, gold and so on. The power of the state is crucially dependent on its ability to domesticate savage money and to reproduce its control over it. This is a constant struggle and especially so for an imperial state with ambitions of international statehood. br The English pound conquered cowries and silver at the end of the last century, and the American dollar almost succeeded in domesticating gold, the last vestige of savage money. However, a new era of savage money is dawning in the twilight of the American empire. 'Money' has an equivocation rather than a definition. Naming it does not nail it. It is a chameleon-like symbol which is forever changing as mercantile relations between people vary over time and place. br This volume is not simply another general theory of world system. It is a theoreticall

    Amazon.com

Now, let the record show that Amazon.com is not, in fact, for dummies. It's good to see that Amazon.com for Dummies has finally arrived on our virtual shelves. This book will introduce even experienced Amazon.com customers to some of the less obvious features of the online emporium, such as corporate accounts, travel services, and the super-fun Friends & Favorites area. Read and learn from Mara Friedman how Amazon.com can provide you with information and (through zShops and the Associates program) make you money.

Friedman briefly covers Amazon's collection of Web Services, which are utilities available to programmers who want to embed Amazon.com functionality (like book searches and popularity monitoring) in their own applications. What's here is clear and stylish (and sometimes funny), and will certainly make you aware of features you don't know about yet. Amazon.com is unusual as a business in that it rewards exploration and study. This book acts as your guide through the electronic aisles. --David Wall

    5 out of 5 stars Ready Reference.......2007-04-10

Why write a book about Amazon when all the info is on the website, you all ask? It's simple: to provide a hard-copy ready reference, and this book COVERS IT ALL. Everything dealing with both sides (buyer/seller) is here. Also is excellent for those new to the online-shopping experience. A crucial book, and a top-floor volume in the Dummies series.

5 out of 5 stars Obviously a must for all amazon reviewers, commenters and posters (or posers).......2007-03-22

Amazon seems to have a lot of zombies wandering around. So many people jumping around screaming at one another about subjects they know nothing about. People that think Modest Mouse is the next Beatles, then of course everyone raving about Al Gore's new movie. The puppets dance and the crowd cheers for more as their marionette strings bob up and down. They scream when you question their intelligence and they cry when you make them realize that the Da Vinci code, and broke Back Mountain are fictional tales and not some kind of in your face "movement". What they need is a primer to help better guide the strings with. This book is a tool that they can use for that!!!

2 out of 5 stars "Stuck" on Post-Its.......2006-03-03

IT says in the title this book is by "Mara Friedman and mara friedman" but do not be mislead, this is only one person so you get a biased point of view throughout the book. It's basically next to useless: you can't order things from the book, you can't start your own competing website. It doesn't even tell you how.

The "Dummies" series has really fallen down. The last good one they wrote was "Post-It Notes for Dummies" which provided a much-needed rarely-explored analyses of the history of the Post-it, misconceptions on the Post-it (they are not ALL yellow, believe it or not) and multiple uses for the Post-it. One time this model on the catwalk was totally covered in Post-its like she was wearing a Post-it dress. It was very cool.

In summary if you don't like leaving notes lying around DO NOT buy Post-Its and do not bother buying the Post-It book. Unless you want to start your own competing post-it company or something.

ok so i've never read this book, but if you need a book to navigate amazon.com, then you should just give me your money instead. I mean, I know it's hard to type a word and press enter, and then press buy; i think the real difficulty of amazon.com is how the author managed to write XXX pages about navigating amazon.com. Having said that, it almost makes me want to buy this book, so I'm changing my 1 Star to 2.

            Book Description

Corporate success in the 21st century requires writing skills that are impossible to master in college. Top executives must solve problems and make crucial decisions without hesitation..... and document their actions in an effective business memo or letter. Although many books cover basic letter-writing techniques, few present the REAL memos a typical manager must write to solve problems, motivate employees, document legal issues and protect the writer's reputation in an increasingly litigious society. This publication contains 100 actual business letters that handle issues such as deaths, downsizing and thorny legal dilemmas. It also presents effective letters that were used to hire, fire, warn, demote and manage difficult and uncooperative employees. These valuable examples will show you viable ways to document your own business problems in an efficient and articulate manner. In our highly competitive workplace, an executive's "paper trail" can make the difference between professional success or failure. To survive in the corporate jungle, this publication is mandatory reading.

5 out of 5 stars Fulfills its mandate..........2004-04-16

The writer describes a variety of unique and creative careers. He discusses the pros and cons of these jobs and what you need to do to get them. As hack writing goes, this guy has flashes of impish insight and wicked wit within the mostly pedestrian prose. It was probably written quickly under deadline pressure for a small amount of money. However, the author succeeds in fulfilling the mandate for a book of this kind. It is what it claims to be, no more, no less: an informative, how-to guide.

The Goldilocks economy was the longest economic expansion in post war history - not too hot... not too cold... just right! Then, seemingly without reason it came to a crashing halt. Two and a half million working Americans lost their jobs, seven and one-half trillion in savings was destroyed. Businesses closed, hospitals closed. Many people found themselves forced to work beyond retirement. Real incomes declined for years. The lives of Americans were changed forever... Now in its second printing, this compelling book names people and events, to show who shot Goldilocks, and it wasn't the Butler or Colonel Mustard!

5 out of 5 stars Who Shot Goldilocks?.......2005-07-14

William D. Rutherford's "Who Shot Goldilocks?: How Alan Greenspan Did in Our Jobs, Savings, and Retirement Plans" is an intelligent and well-researched analysis of the economy of the United States.

The United States economy in the nineteen nineties was efficient and productive, and economists said it was ideal. The public and governments from all over the world looked up to the U.S. economy with admiration mingled with envy. The U.S. economy did not encourage inflation, as the growth was steady. At the same time because of the stable state of affairs, it created a congenial atmosphere for production. In other words, the economy was "just right!" and hence was called the Goldilocks economy.

However, by the end of the decade, the economy faltered and stopped growing. The stock market crashed. Some businesses were closed down. Many people lost their jobs and savings. There was no hint or warning that this type of crash could happen to the economy, and the economists and government were caught unawares. They did not even realize what had happened, and hence were not in a position to try and set it right.

Rutherford explores the downturn of the economy, searching for who is responsible for the current state of the economy. He then scathingly criticizes the responsible parties for their role in the economic downswing. He also demonstrates that the implosion of the economy could have been prevented.

Despite the focus of the book being what went wrong in the economy, he ends on a note of hope, saying that the American economy will still prosper due to the efforts of industrialists who are innovative risk takers. Rutherford concludes that the world economy could be better. However, he also feels that the economy of Europe will falter because of European industries' lack of insight into the intricacies of the economy. Rutherford presents the difficult topic, the U.S. economy, in a simple manner, explaining how economies function. His simple language allows him to present his ideas lucidly to laymen. An engrossing read, "Who Shot Goldilocks?: How Alan Greenspan Did in Our Jobs, Savings, and Retirement Plans" will surely be appreciated by economists and anyone who wants to know the reason why the U.S. economy faltered.

5 out of 5 stars Porridge is just right.......2004-09-02

This book is very well written and easily understood. For someone like me who is not a well versed on the matters of the various factors affecting the financial markets, it provided a number of new insights. I do not profess to offer an opinion on the matter of Greenspan's success or failure, but this book does offer a different perspective from what is generally portrayed in the media. Worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for all political and business leaders!.......2004-07-23

Shocking! Mr. Rutherford has done his homework. Who shot Goldilocks? will give you new insight into the internal workings of the Federal Reserve, Mr. Greenspan's seriously flawed decision making techniques and the unbelievable amount of power wielded by so few. In fact, this book will leave you with grave concern for the current economy and longing for answers to a much needed money-system overhaul. A great read!

5 out of 5 stars Great airplane read for investors!.......2004-07-18

This book has answers for anyone who got crushed in the dot.com bust. An impassioned and efficient analysis of 20 years of American financial history. Of significant interest to anyone with money in the market or with concerns about the concentration of economic power in the Federal Reserve Bank.

5 out of 5 stars A Thought Provoking Account of Alan Greenspan.......2004-06-21

This book is a great way to look at Alan Greenspan's effect on the federal reserve, stock markets, interest rates and inflation. It is well-written and easily accessible for someone wanting to learn about how these entities interact. The perspective on Alan Greenspan is interesting and left me wanting to learn more. It would also be helpful for anyone interested in learning about the stock market or bond market as Greenspan has had such a dramatic effect in both these areas.

Series editor Andrew Leckey and guest editor Ken Auletta have scoured the print media, consulted with the editors of major business and general interest publications, and surveyed journalism school deans to find the best business stories from the last twelve months. Among those selected: Michael Lewis on teenage stock trader Jonathan Lebed, from The New York Times Magazine; James B. Stewart on the irrepressible Michael Milken, from The New Yorker; and many others from the pages of The Wall Street Journal, Rolling Stone, Fortune, Rocky Mountain News, and Wired.

The second annual edition continues the excellence and comprehensive range of this fascinating anthology series.

              5 out of 5 stars A diverse, well-represented collection.......2002-06-07

From print media and journals to business and general interest publications, the authors have searched for the best business accounts from the past year, providing vignettes and accounts primarily nonfiction in content, but telling of business goals, individuals, and strategies. A diverse, well-represented collection.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific (and buy 2001 too).......2002-05-21

Great anthology from a wide variety of sources (the usual financial journals plus some interesting exotic publications (Mother Jones?)). Not a clunker in the lot. Buy this one and its 2001 predecessor and you will be fascinated. Hope this series continues for many years...

5 out of 5 stars A great, entertaining and thought provoking read..........2002-04-27

What a simple, yet compelling, concept. Scour all of the business magazines (mostly major ones, though), and pick the best 27 articles of the prior year, independent of field of interest. Then lay them out with no extra fluff, letting the original work be the star attraction. Such is the concept behind this book, which was both a quick read and difficult to put down.

With stories ranging from the rise, fall and re-rise of fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger to a joyous piece on Ron Popeil of quirky gadget-maker (and those accompanying infomercials) Ronco fame to an amazing tome on emerging "digital paper" technology that has to be read to be fully appreciated, this book covered a myriad of topics that I probably would not have gone out of my way to track down, but having read about them in this book, my appetite to read on has only been whetted.

If you are looking to expand your horizons beyond the two or three topics that currently represent your comfort zone, this book is an easy and enjoyable way to dip your toes in the water.

              Strongly recommended.

              Book Description

"Faster, cheaper, better." That's been the mantra of business for decades--in just that order--with the "better" part all but obliterated by "faster and cheaper."

According to authors Bean and Radford, it's time for manufacturers to put the emphasis on the "better"--because it's better products, not just cheaper ones, that will be the key to success in the coming millennium. Companies that want to shine in the twenty-first century will provide more new, exciting, innovative, and cost-effective products than ever before.

In POWERFUL PRODUCTS, Bean and Radford offer readers a thoroughly researched product development process that guarantees success virtually every time. With this winning formula, readers will learn to: * Develop a workable and specific market segmentation model that is used to target new products * Create a product development strategy that is in alignment with the goals and strategies of the company * Achieve consistent, repeatable product success, and more.

5 out of 5 stars A blueprint for thoughtful new product devopment.......2002-05-02

Although I first read this book (on a recommendation) in 2000, I really didn't have the need for, or appreciate the significance of its foundation and approach to Product Development. However product innovation is now a hot topic, and successful product development is definitely on my radar screen. Accordingly, after having just re-read Powerful Products, I can say in my mind, these guys have it right-on. For anyone who is serious about understanding and managing new product development, this book is a good blueprint for success. The book is an easy read, well laid out and full of 'nuggets' that I will continue to lift and use, verbatum. It starts with a Product Development Process Overview and then proceeds to walk you through the process, including some very useful analysis and screening templates, avoidable pitfalls, etc. I now plan to read their followup book, The Business of Innovation.

1 out of 5 stars Lots of Theory - Short on Practicality.......2000-08-12

In my opinion, this is one of the worst books I have ever read on new product development. Why ANACOM, a good publisher, went to press with this is a mystery to me; I suppose the editors that they used didn't understand what it takes to be successful with new products.

To its credit, the book accurately presents most requisite strategic thinking points for successful new products. Moreover, it does so in the order of occurrence in the development of a new product, but that's where the benefits of this book stop.

The linkage between strategic thinking and "real world" applications is weak, confusing or non-existent for the most part. The authors treat with almost equal significance major, minor and relatively insignificant strategic points causing at least confusion if not outright misleading the reader. Moreover, while the book often points out where to apply the strategy, rarely does it make clear how this can be implemented. The book is grossly lacking examples and case studies to clarify points.

Finally, the book is fine for strategic over-thinkers. But, if you want a good, practical information on corporate strategy for new products consider Cooper, Wheelwright or Gruenwald.

5 out of 5 stars as useful as they come.......2000-07-14

what i really liked about this book is the elegant simplicity with which it walks through what can be one of the more complex business problems; facilitating innovation, from the issues of strategy formulation through implementation. these guys have obviously "been there." nice simple graphics and models, too. really useful.

              5 out of 5 stars Rock Solid.......2000-05-29

This is the best product development book on the market. Their approach is rock solid!

                Book Description

This book focuses on the structural changes in private enterprises and public institutions that aim at lifting the continental productive system onto a higher growth path. Organized along three research lines, the chapters offer new, provocative treatments of the adjustments in monetary and real sectors accompanying the European economic integration, the consequences of specific legal/institutional changes, and national systems of technological and institutional innovation. Given the fundamental changes of policy regimes involved, only a comparative (to some extent, eclectic) conceptual framework may provide insights about the ultimate economic state eventually reached and the manifold of processes leading towards it. The unifying feature of the book lies in its attempt to highlight the complementary roles of private and public sectors in promoting technology, human capital and institutional engineering as the ingredients in any successful recipe for growth and convergence.
